Once again, practice was restricted to the media and we weren't too happy about it. With the team working inside the Beamer Barn, us media guys weren't even able to cheat and sneak a peak of any of the live action.
Practice concluded around 5:45 p.m. and as the players were walking out of the indoor practice facility, I saw the following players in blue jerseys: RT Wade Hansen, RB Deshawn McClease, DE Dadi Nicolas, DE Seth Dooley and DT Corey Marshall.
Frank Beamer spoke with the media for a few moments. A few points he made that stood out:
- He's impressed with the kicking game and likes what he's seen from punter Mitchell Ludwig
- He's not concerned about Nicolas' hand injury or Hansen's foot injury
- Players he pointed out as solid punt returners: Greg Stroman, C.J. Carroll and Kendall Fuller
- Kickoff returners? Beamer mentioned Travon McMillian, J.C. Coleman and Trey Edmunds
I noticed offensive line coach Stacy Searels was having what appeared to be an in-depth, one-on-one discussion with backup LT Yoshua Nijman.
When I asked Searels about how the starting offensive line is shaping up, he had this to say:
"When we figure out who the number ones are, I think they're doing outstanding. We have yet to figure out who the number ones are, so it's a work in progress."
Searels was quick to praise Nijman and fellow lineman Parker Osterloh (who has been seen getting some first-team reps.)
"Osterloh and Nijman are doing a terrific job. One hasn't played offensive line and the other hasn't played significant snaps. Both of them are working really hard. They never say a word, just go out and do their jobs."
Stacy Searels said Parker Osterloh, Yosuah Nijman have been solid this camp. Both will definitely play this year. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 18, 2015
There's been some discussion about LG Wyatt Teller working with the second-team O-line. When pressed, Searels had this to say about the matter:
"Wyatt's a very talented young man. Doing fine. He's worked with the ones most of camp."
The media also visited with WRs coach Zohn Burden. Similar to coach Searels, he was also pretty tight-lipped and had no interest in revealing who he believes will emerge as the third, fourth and fifth wide receivers.
"It's still an everyday process for us to see who's executing at the highest level and who's competing at the highest level and we'll determine it from there."
Despite that, coach Burden did do us the favor of discussing several wide receivers at length, including Demitri Knowles, Kevin Asante, Jaylen Bradshaw and Deon Newsome:
ON KNOWLES: "This is the most physical I've seen him since he's gotten here. He's not just running the deep balls, he's catching the intermediate passes and running those routes, so he's coming along, he's developing. I like where he is right now."
ON ASANTE: "He's played obviously in the past year, so he has game experience. But he's a physical player. He brings certain things to the table as far as a physical presence that we need in the run game and he does some things in the pass game as well. He'll definitely be a guy you'll see out there.
ON BRADSHAW: "Jaylen Bradshaw is developing. He worked hard over the summer. He's just got to get out there and get some more experience and play faster, so we put him in a lot of situations where he has to make decisions and option routes and things of that nature. We're just trying to put him in more challenging situations to see if he can handle it and he's doing a good job right now."
ON NEWSOME: "He's developing; trying to become a complete wide receiver, not just a jet sweep threat. His knowledge of the game has picked up from the summertime to now. He's developing as well."
Player Quotes
WR Deon Newsome
ON HOW THE OFFENSE IS SHAPING UP:
"I think it's coming together very well. We're making a lot more steps, as far as a receiving corps anyway. We're trying to become better, where people, like, notice us more and we make plays all the time. Really, we're focused on blocking and just becoming better overall as far as receivers and a better offense."
ON WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT COACH BURDEN:
"I like him a lot. He taught me a lot, man. He taught me a lot of things. I'm working on using everything he teaches me. Pretty much, he's transforming me into an actual receiver.
ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE WIDE RECEIVERS OVERALL:
"I've seen an improvement in everybody, actually. I think we can all make steps to become better, but as far as progressing, I think we're doing pretty good."
RB Marshawn Williams
ON HIS WEIGHT:
"I've gained a few, but it's nothing too crazy. It's nothing that I can't just work off real quick. I'm in the process of doing it now."
ON WHAT HE CAN DO NOW COMPARED TO A MONTH AGO:
"I would say I'm a little better at cutting now than I was then and my leg strength is way better now than it was a month ago. That's really the biggest difference."
ON WHAT HIS LIMITATIONS ARE RIGHT NOW:
"It's just mostly gaining my confidence in everything, really. Just building confidence to try to get back out there and doing everything I was doing before I got hurt."
ON POSSIBLY GETTING REDSHIRTED BY THE COACHING STAFF:
"I never go against my coaches. I'd easily, as soon as they say it, I'm going to be down with it, no worries after that. But, it would hurt. I'll say that much. You know, I just want to play. So, either way though, it doesn't matter."
OL Parker Osterloh
ON WHERE HE'S WORKED THE MOST ON THE O-LINE:
"Well this week, I've worked at left guard most. And then last week, I was working at left tackle when Wade (Hansen) was resting up. But, I've really, everyday, played two positions. It's sort of challenging, but just being able to flip sides and flip the plays in your head. But I pride myself on being able to do the best that I can wherever coach needs me."
ON THE COMPETITION FOR THE STARTING O-LINE:
"I definitely think it's a competition. I've been working hard every day trying to at least earn playing time, if not start and try to contribute to the team as much as possible. But, you know, just being able to flip around I think and play multiple positions is helping me get more playing time."
ON BEING ABLE TO PLAY ANY OFFENSIVE LINE POSITION BESIDES CENTER:
"In high school, I played both tackles. I switched sides every play. And I actually did play center in high school, too. But I don't know if I want to tell coach (Searels) that [laughs]. I've gotten a lot more comfortable playing both the guard positions, so I think if I needed to, I can play wherever I need to."
OL Yoshua Nijman
ON HIS INITIAL REACTION OF MOVING TO THE OFFENSIVE LINE:
"Well, I just went with it. I was like, 'you know what, whatever's best for the team I'm just going to do that.'"
ON IF THE MOVE IS PAYING OFF:
"Yeah, I guess. I guess it's paying off now. I mean, even if I would play defense or offense, I would still give like maximum effort."
ON HOW MUCH WEIGHT HE'S ADDED IN THE OFFSEASON:
"Probably, like 10 or 15 pounds. I'm around 280, 280ish."

Comments
I know lots of people are bummed about teller, but I am excited to see other guys stepping up. We were worried about only having 5 lineman, looks like we may have 7 or 8 which is good given our injury bug luck lately.
Yosh is still young, but he doesn't sound very excited from his quotes about moving. he'll get it though as soon as the scouts start hollering
There were a couple of his comments that were omitted that I saw in a video version - they asked if he wanted to eventually get back to the defensive side of the ball and he responded that, no, he has flipped his thoughts on that and actually likes offense more than defense now.
Here's to quick development and the light coming on for him later this season for more depth.
Sounds like the light is coming on for him already. It has been stated that he will play this season and I doubt he would see the field if he was missing that much.
so, Kevin, what you're saying is we need to invest in an official TKP drone so we can get video of closed practices. It would last maybe a day then Hughes would take it down, but it might be worth it...
Pretty much....there's always the option of wearing a Tech Dri-Fit shirt and some slacks to give off the impression of being a member of the athletic department and walking around the practice fields.
But when they find out you're media...
Holy crap I would love a TKP drone. The footage could be used in sick highlight videos.
did someone say kickstarter?
Now if only we had someone that could make some sick highlight videos...
My fire dept just was given one by the elks lodge. So once I get certified to fly it I volunteer to pilot the TKP drone.
awesome! get me some shots of the fireworks in lane on labor day night, k?
It takes 60 days for FAA to certify us. Plus are you buying the drone? Starts out about 300 for the one we would need for TKP.
Well just found this so no game footage from a drone.
ok, so we paint the drone luftwaffe grey and only fly it at night games, above the lights. No one will ever see it.
Or we convince Whit to do a "test run" of the fireworks when there isn't a game and we can get the cool footage of the fireworks. Might have to green screen the entire stadium so we can put fans in later
Get with UVA on this.
There has to be exceptions to this. Otherwise, how does anyone ever do a flyover or parachute into stadiums?
Probably because technically, the game isn't occurring at that time. It's pre-game.
So, we can fly the drone before the game, after the game, halftime and timeouts? Those technicalities, they'll get after ya.
Nope, hour before and hour after event.
Because those are not drones. These rules are for drones only. There are different rules for manned flights over stadiums and events. Manned aircraft fly above 3,000 AGL (above ground level)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I have no hard evidence other than my own eyes), but some of those flyovers seem pretty damn low. Especially the prop-driven aircraft.
I was in the RV lot (near the airfield) last year for the ECU game and a guy had one of those $300 drones. It was maybe 100 ft. in the air but obviously the ATC thought it was too close to the air space for the airport.
It seems as though the ATC hacked the drone and sent it on a course northeast towards the stadium, the guy flying it freaked out and went as far as calling the police to ask if they would look for it.
I just waited silently for an FAA official to show up and arrest him, that didn't happen but I'm guessing it could have.
Within a 3 nm radius? At least we can get (almost) right up to the edge of the stadium for some long shots
I totally read it as nanometer, too, but I think it's actually nautical mile...
I don't know how other people feel, but I think it's a given either Shai or Juice will redshirt this year. I personally think it will play out that they both could be redshirted if JC/Trey/McMillian perform well. I think they will hold off for as long as possible before playing Shai due to the fact that JC is a Senior and Trey a junior. No matter what I think Juice will redshirt just to make sure that knee is good to go, but hey anything can happen as far as injuries and this could change (see 2014 season).
Is that a typo, or is Ludwig punting now? If so, is A.J.'s spot not locked?
He punted in the spring game... I think it's mostly to have a solid backup because AJ is coming back from injury.
Well, now I just feel silly. I don't remember him punting at the spring game.
Then again, I missed a lot of it for stupid reasons. Spent the second half of the game in my uncle's company's suite. Everyone there was more worried about business than the game. I begrudgingly entertained their conversations because I was being given free booze. It was sad that almost no one there was actually watching the game.
And why wasn't I invited to the free booze party??? I thought we were friends... :(
Hell, I was surprised I was invited. I was definitely out of place. You're right though. I should have invited everyone at TKP to crash the suite. It certainly would have been more fun.
He mentioned Hughes of course, but was also praised Ludwig without any broaching
AJ is a senior and Mitchell is new to punting at this level. Gotta get Mitchell some practice before next year if he's going to be the new 4th down QB.
I feel way more concerned about this Teller thing than I should
I honestly think it's nothing. It's more to do with we have a decent OL 2 group so why not get them reps against the best d line they'll see all year.
Reps now vs our 1st and 2 DL will pay off immensely later in the year. Imagine being able to easily swap 2 OLinemen with out worrying if they'll hold up. That will keep the big boys a little more rested and ready for more pancakes.
Based on my impression from watching Searles' interview, I think they're trying to bring along Osterloh as that #6 guy and this is a safe way to get him more first team reps. Nijman has been getting first team reps as a result of Wade Hansen's foot, so moving McLaughlin over to RT is an easy solution there. The rest I take as coach speak, so I'm not worried anymore... I think... Maybe.
Searels has repeatedly said McGlock is a RT, and if somebody is beating Teller out... So be it. I will more than stand by a coaching staff that isn't afraid to make hard decisions. I still imagine #57 starting
The absolute worse case scenario is that Teller is our backup guard. For a team that had zero OL depth coming out of Spring, I'll take that every single day.
can't see any possibility of that happening. teller needs to be in there.
I'd be rather shocked if that wasn't the case, fwiw.
Osterloh is obviously the #6 guy on the O-Line, so he needs to get reps with the first team if he is going to be able to contribute immediately off the bench in the event of an injury. Plus, he will be able to give various guys on the first team a break in-game without there being any drop-off. That is what I make of this move. Nothing to see here folks, move along.
Competition is always great, but so is a cohesive line (which comes from reps together). In Searels I trust.
What happens if a guy goes down and the 2nd guy doesn't have any of the same trust, communication or cohesiveness with the other starting 4?
It seems much more important that the first team offensive line develop its cohesion before worrying about the backups. Teller is the best offensive lineman on the team. Him repping with the twos doesn't seem like anything more than a piddly, inane slap on the wrist.
I'm not saying I agree with it, but I can see where Searels might be coming from. You and I might do things differently, but that's probably why his paychecks are much bigger than ours and we don't wear sweatshirts in August.
he also had wyatt on the bench to start the year last year, which a lot didn't agree with. Noticed an immediate uptick in our running game after he was inserted and ended up being the OL MVP. Coaches aren't infallible.
You're assuming he was as good in Sept as he was in November. Teller himself admitted he wasn't. It's not as though he wasn't getting any snaps.
You are correct that coaches aren't infallible, but in this case I'm inclined to think the coach made the right call despite what the peanut gallery thought.
may not have been as "good" but he would have been just as physical, which is what the line has been missing for a long time. i'd rather have a guy out there making a few mistakes but planting people when he's doing it right than a guy that is doing it by the book but generating no push.
From the little brother comments that were made about Wyatt and knowing Searles, it kind of sounds like Searles doesn't like putting up with Wyatt's antics.
By all indications, that cohesion has set up pretty well. It's now a question of are we going to try to get the backups ready, or aren't we. If we are, the time is now. Then we can revert to our actual starting five for the last few practices before the season opens.
What I'll look like when I shower on the morning of September 7th!!! Just get here already!

We are building toward having a great 2016 OL, all will be getting more experience and Austin Clark will be a factor. Also, any new recruits( Landon Dickerson, hopefully).
Cory Marshall in a blue jersey doesn't sound so great.
