OT: Tyrod Taylor vs Browns

Tyrod was named as the starter for the Bills' game against the Browns (which happened during the day yesterday) and the Bills ended up losing the game but I can't find any stats on Taylor. The only highlight video I saw for the game shows that EJ Manuel was the leader in passing stats (11-20, 129). Did anyone see the game? Does anyone know how Taylor looked while he was playing? The last clip of the highlight video shows a Browns Pick-6 of Matt Cassel(lol).

Highlights from Browns-Bills

EDIT: So I majorly goofed up and everything above is, well, irrelevant. VT_Fencer had a great idea to make this the game thread for the game at 8:00 tonight so let's just roll with that. I'm going to leave the original post so everyone can get a good chuckle at my expense. Go Hokies(Bills)!!

um.. that game is tonight at 8.

is it?

i'm so confused...I work with a bills fan who said something about the game being yesterday during the day...I don't know what's going on

Onward and upward

the keywords there were "Bills Fan"

shame on me

The Bills and the Browns may have been slinging it around yesterday afternoon in the school yard. Don;t most of these teams practice with each other right before a pre-season game?

Leonard. Duh.

That must have been highlights from last season, because the game is actually scheduled for tonight at 8pm.

"I thought the kid right there you're talking to right there played his nuts off."

alright...well I'm just confused then..my bad

Onward and upward

This week have been Bills/Browns joint practices. Could be stats from that?

The video says "Week 5" and it's only Week 2 of the preseason...

That wasn't Matt Cassel, that was Jeff Toole.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Go home, VPIHokieME, you're drunk.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

FTR, mentioning Tyrod Taylor is never Off-Topic.

@CraigThompsonVT

This is how I'm feeling right now...

Onward and upward

If it makes you feel better, I forgot all about the game tonight until I read your title. You helped this Hokie not forget to watch the game tonight and get really pissed. My stomach thanks you for the beers that will be consumed while watching. My liver is flicking you off, but we will just ignore that little bastard.

yes, thank you! That does help! I'm always happy to piss off someone's liver

Onward and upward

If it makes you feel worse, I've had my DVR set for this game since last week when it was announced that Tyrod would start.

True Hokie fans would be able to recite Tyrod's pre-season schedule from memory. Go away. You are dead to me.

Leonard. Duh.

Onward and upward

Don't worry, we'll just make this the de facto game thread, and we'll all post lots of gifs and all caps messages when Tyrod does Tyrod things.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Anyone know the TV details for the game tonight? If it's on a channel I get, I'd definitely like to catch that game.

ESPN last time i checked

This is how it happened:
ESPN Guy#1 (aka Jenkins): We need something for Thursday night! Anybody got anything?
ESPN Guy#2 (aka Fred): The NFL has some of those great Preseason games on!
Jenkins: Great what time is Jaymus playing? We've got all kinds of Famous Jaymus talk prepared!
Fred: Well not until Monday actually, remember you said you had a bunch of Famous Jaymus talk for it last week.
Jenkins: Oh yeah, shit. Well who else plays football worth talking about?
Fred: Well Washington is pla-
Jenkins: NEXT!
Fred: Well there's that Buffallo QB battle going on that ever-
Jenkins: Screw that! We have to fill 3+ hours of airtime with talk. We need more than that!
Fred: Well they are playing the Browns and Johnny M-
Jenkins: Sweet baby Jesus, we've got our game!

Friday Morning...

Mickey Mouse: JENKINS! I want answers... and I want them NOW!

Leonard. Duh.

I am a native Buffalonian and Hokie grad so as you can imagine tonight's game (at least the first half) is a rather large deal for me! I am in Albania and would like to find a working link later as I don't have that NFL.com package deal. I'm open to suggestions or ways to tune in, and I need all the help I can get! Is it possible to pay a one time fee through NFL.com to get a game? Any options are welcome. Thanks and Go Bills (and Hokies)!

It is on ESPN, you do not need NFL Network or NFL package.

Other than firstrowsports, how do i find a decent link to the ESPN broadcast?

Apologize, assumed you had regular cable. Four hours till kickoff I think your best bet is to go to a friends house.

I found a 7 day free trial for NFL.com Gamepass, so I'll check that baby out.

don't do it..

Such live preseason games do not include all nationally-broadcast preseason games and any preseason games televised in a user's local market. Preseason games that are not available live in NFL Game Pass will be made available on-demand in the NFL Game Pass archives shortly after the conclusion of the original telecast. NFL Game Pass does not include live regular season, playoff, and Super Bowl game broadcasts.

Before I got to the edit, I was so confused reading the OP

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Live on ESPN. Here we go Tyrod. Now or never, sucks he is missing top 5 running backs and top 3 wide receivers. Will be a challenge

Dang. He was perfect on that drive plus some scrambles until he took that bad sack. Whomp.

I didn't like that defenseless receiver call..

Tyrod is definitely showing up tonight, that can't be denied. Beautiful 3rd down 22 yd pass

Good pocket presence and throw by T-Mobile

...are these bills made of glass?!? Good Lord

I would do anything to have Taylor back as our QB.

Some great stuff for Tyrod so far. Taking that sack to end the field goal attempt drive won't endear him though. You have to be good situationally to win the coaches trust.

The second drive through across the middle on 3rd down was a thing of beauty.

DON JOHNSON BACK ON TV? Gewwwwww.

Let's Go...

Well, I think we can all agree on one thing, Tyrod could start for the Browns. Really impressed with Tyrod though, minus the sack, and that under thrown TD chance, he has looked great. He and Mccoy in the backfield with Sammy stretching the field could be fun to watch.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

I think that end zone throw was placed intentionally to try and get his receiver to draw a PI from the corner. I don't think he trusted the receiver to make a jump ball catch, since I believe it was the same one that showed less than total effort on the earlier streak down the sideline that Tyrod put basically on his chest. That sack was pretty inexcusable though. I hope for his sake his line improves.

Kam holding out for better contract?

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Kam is being an idiot holding out like he is

No he's not. He's standing up for himself. He's the best safety in the league, is key to Seattle's defense, and deserves to be paid as such. He has absolutely nothing to lose by holding out, and everything to gain. It's a smart move on his part, and hopefully it works out.

I agree. I hate it, contracts are signed for a reason. If you over perform, there are bonuses and a time and a place for negotiations... when it expires.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Completely wrong the NFL is the only league where the contracts are not guaranteed and the team can cancel it anytime whereas the player cannot. In other words if a player signed a five-year contract the team can decide after one year to cut him and not pay him the last four years but the player cannot decide after one year to renegotiate the five-year contract it's completely one-sided

Which is why I Iove Hokie Football so much more. But, to your point, there is guaranteed money for a reason. I mean damn, look at Sam Bradford.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Yeah but the only people getting any real guaranteed money are the very top first-round draft picks and the quarterbacks, maybe a few WRs or RBs everyone else is on the short end of the stick especially a late round pick who excels and exceeds.

100% agree, but he signed a contract, and now he's proved he deserves more. When his contract is up, he can take advantage of it. I know people can disagree, but the NFL is a business. If I ran my department based on 1 year of performance I would kill my company. That's how people become complacent. However, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

You're missing the point the team also offers the contract and then nullifies it at will but the player is unable to do the same. It takes two parties to make a contract but one has all the power to hold up the contract or nullify the contract. If you underperform the team doesn't have to wait until the end of the contract term in order to terminate the contract they can terminate immediately but if you over perform as a player you are unable to terminate the contract immediately it isn't a 2 Way St.

No, you are missing the point. When Kam owns his team some day he can call the shots. Until then, play the game to the best of your ability and take get paid while you can. Kam is an employee, a great one, but what you are implying is not how life works.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

He's an employee not property. It shouldn't be so one-sided. it takes two parties to enter a contract and to honor the terms of the contract.

I'd say the NFL is a pretty big exception to "how life works." Not sure how many regular joes you know who get millions of dollars a year to play a game 16 weeks out of the year.

Kam is the only player out of 1700 holding out. You can change it to "how the NFL works" if you prefer.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Many players hold out every year. Some teams give in a lot sooner than others. Dez Bryant held out against the Cowboys for a while until they gave in and gave him the long term contract he wanted.

I aware that it happens, does that mean I have to agree with it? All I was trying to say is that I don't agree with people holding out, and that they should play out their contract. It is only an opinion. I hope the man has a long career, he is fun to watch.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Kam is the only player STILL holding out. It's not like Kam invented the radical concept of disputing a contract. Marshawn held out over the summer. Marshawn got paid. Jeremy Mincey in Dallas had a short holdout. Got paid. Countless other guys do this every year. If you feel your labor is undervalued, there's nothing wrong with trying to balance the scales a bit. Especially if you'll have no problem finding a job elsewhere.

Then why does the NFL have multiple year contracts? Should the team take money away if they under-perform?

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Because it provides the player a sense of security. "Hey, we're locking you in at this pay for this many years. But if you don't meet expectations, we can void this contract at any time and leave you out in the cold on your ass with no repercussions."

Teams cut players regardless of contract. So I'd say the teams already do take away money for "under-performing."

"Why does the NFL have multiple year contracts?" Exactly now you're starting to hit the source of the problem. As far as the team goes, you aren't on a five year deal, you have 5 1-year deals running consecutively which they can end at any moment for injury, performance, salary cap issues, overpaid, any reason they come up with. As far as the players options go, he is under 1 5-year contract with no options to get out.

The average salary is 400k and the average career span is 3 years. The Peyton Mannings are one guy on the 53 man roster the vast majority make much less than "millions and millions"

In the NFL, one season can be the end of your career. If you're at the peak of your game in year 3 of a 5 year contract, you should get paid that way because the contract was structured 3 years ago when you weren't there. Sure, you can wait until year 5, but get injured in year 4 that ends your career and you will never see that money.

Exactly. He and his agent signed a contract when they already knew he was one of the best players in the league. This isn't a rookie contract. He is getting paid good money for a safety.

Do your time and get a better contract in a year or two. The frequently renegotiate when there is 1 or 2 years left on a contract, not three.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Seattle opened up the purse for a number of second and other contracts. This happened after Kam signed his contract and arguably changed the "relative value to pay" for Kam and the Seahawks. Hawks also have set the precedent of moving money from out years to front years for other players as well as settling with holdouts. Its not surprising that this happened. I don't know how good Kam's replacement is but I really thought Kam brought an intimidation factor that is hard to replicate.

We'll see. With 49ers uncertain, many think the Cardinals were a one hit wonder and Seattle is in a catbird seat. Not sure I agree with that but ...if it doesn't work out maybe he'll head back east.

Wait guys, did we get the NFL's consent to talk about this game?

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

Y'know there may be a day when I see a post of yours without posting (or seeing someone else post) this:

Not exactly sure why you were down voted

Seconded?

Meh I'm not one to get worked up about a lone dv here or there. It could have been an accident. Or not I suppose but as it is now I'm at +2 so I'll take it. Yolo. Or, to steal something from the ladies bathroom wall at Hokie House, You Only YOLO once. #YoYoloO

I had the same thought. YOYOLOO would look good engraved on HokieStone. They should probably engrave that on the HokieStone above the Tunnel Exit..

something from the ladies bathroom

I'd like to get the story behind your knowledge of writing on the bathroom wall of the ladies room...

Onward and upward

Not really that exciting of a story. A drunk lady friend was drunk and told me about it. I didn't believe her (because she was drunk) and so drunk me got pulled by drunk lady friend in to see it. Surprisingly, I'm still allowed in Hokie House.

Chucky just said he believed Tyrod has taken control of the position and he expects him to be the starter

Sean

Beat me to it, so pumped... Chuck said he is the man, and he is excited to see him with the full talent.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Bettter yet, Chucky said Tyrod was the biggest surprise of the preseason.

I'm assuming he meant among all the teams, not just the Bills.

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

Looks like Tyrod has a pretty good chance of starting for Buffalo. He looked pretty good tonight (sans the red zone sack).

Pathetically I am a Bills fan now :) Tyrod looks good in red, white and blue

Sean

As long as you don't like the Steelers we're good. I am a Ravens fan that was always hoping Tyrod would get his chance. I hope he keeps it up and becomes Brady's kryptonite in the AFC east. Tired of Brady and the Pats and all the BS that comes with them.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

It has been OK to like the Bills ever since Bruce Smith played for them.

Nope I have always been a fan of Washington but they have been so consistantly bad for 23 years now it gets tough, plus Dan Snyder has been increasingly difficult to support over the years.

Sean

Manuel was the one to lead the winning drive. That makes me nervous.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Meh, I don't take any stock in it. It was against the backs ups' backs ups.

Tyrod still looked impressive in the first half

Against the Browns scout team.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

With a duct tape offense.

Not going to lie, the prospect of Sammy Watkins, Lesean McCoy, and T-mob has me intrigued.

I'll definitely be following buffalo close if taylor gets the nod to be starter.

Don't forget Percy Harvin.

The prospect of that swiss cheese OL makes it feel like 2008-10 all over again.

One thing is certain after seeing the first half of that game, Gruden loves him some Tyrod

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I think Gruden just likes shiny new toys in general...I'm not an Xs and Os guru by any stretch of the imagination so I don't know if Gruden is a technical savant or a phony blowing smoke but one thing is certain; The man annoys the heck out of me. He falls in love with anything he has to in order to have talking points during the game. That being said, I think he's a showman and he probably helps get good ratings. He's going to talk about hot topics and his enthusiasm and energy will always be regarded as positives. It's not for everyone.

Onward and upward

Considering his success as a coach, I don't think he's blowing smoke. Personally, I love his act. He gets excited about good football, and then will actually spell out what's going on. Not a lot of commentators get in depth enough to actual teach what's going on and what to watch for, even if it's nothing overly complicated.

You "don't think he's blowing smoke", but "you love his act". Isn't a big part of his act as a commentator "blowing smoke"?

I've neither a Gruden fan or a Gruden hater. But I'm willing to bet that what Gruden really thinks as a coach and what he says as a commentator are -- way more often than not -- two entirely different things.

I take what he says now about most players most of the time with a huge grain of salt.

Huh? I'm not trying to be argumentative. In this situation blowing smoke would mean talking about things he's not actually very knowledgeable of, trying to pass himself off as an expert when really he's just a talking head.
His "act" that I like is just his personality and how he relates that information, ie. overly enthusiastic and very animated about football.
I get that you don't like him, that's fine, I can see him rubbing some the wrong way. But you make it sound like he's either intentionally misleading people (why would he do that?) or that he doesn't know what he's talking about (doubtful considering the super bowl ring).

...at least he has personal history calling the Stanford game, there might be some sincerity in his admiration.

Watch Gruden's QB breakdowns that he does for the rookies. He brings them in the film room, talks with them and breaks down their game. Then they go outside and run a few drills.

Chucky was pretty critical of Mariota before the draft, remains to be seen how he performs over the next few years. Had praise for Bortles (big arm, good pocket presence) and Bridgewater (great understanding and ball placement). A little critical of Winston too, said he locks onto receivers, doesn't always make progressions and ad-libs too much; same criticism of Manziel come to think of it.

I like his enthusiasm and his Xs and Os. He's a young John Madden, a real color commentator.

He's a young John Madden, a real color commentator.

Is that a good thing?
