Mario Nixon verbals to VT

Mario Nixon of Norfolk Christian School verbaled to VT today. He's a wide receiver in the mold VT has likes ... big and physical.

6'4"
215

Now will this lead to his buddy Courtnye Wynn the 6'5" 255 DT prospect to follow. He's a VT lean as well, but recent offers from tOSU and ND might slow his verbal.

My Two Questions

If and when Wynn follows, can those two swing Moore to us? I've heard Beamer say he doesn't like to pursue after they've made their decision.

If we do land Wynn, does that help or hurt our chances with Eddie Goldman?

no

moore isn't to be swayed.

Thoughts

You'd like to hope they would - Wahee was a desperation offer from UVA in hopes of landing the NCS guys. It worked with Moore, but sources are indicating that Wynn is almost 99% VT at this moment. Who's to say that that can't change, but I feel good about our chances with Wynn.

Eddie Goldman - man, I hadn't looked up that guy before. Guy has NFL size right now. I have a hard time thinking we can sway the five-star defensive lineman types from other schools. I'm really high on Kirven and Sheldon Day, I think the two of them would be huge for this class.

I'm a little concerned about our chances with some of the guys left on the board. Caleb, Prosise, and Holsey are all high-value recruits, but we are starting to max out our WR/DB commitments. Same with Stefon Diggs. I don't want our current solid commits to prevent us from nabbing some really great ones.

caleb and diggs

don't have to worry about not beating out any other guy that has verbaled. staff will find room for those 2. probably same for holsey, especially as manning is a soft commit making goo goo eyes to miami.

In addition to revealing

In addition to revealing Willenbrock's commitment, Rivals.com also mentioned Tech commitment Donaldven Manning is strongly considering Miami. Manning, a 5-10, 163-pound cornerback who was the second recruit for the '12 class to commit in February to Tech, is being referred to as a soft commitment to the Hokies.

Why's Manning eyeing Miami? I know when Tennessee came calling he told them he was solid on Tech.

I've been trying to keep up with this topic...

Joe- as the subject reads I've been trying to keep up with Manning's progress for awhile in terms of visiting other schools and offers. From what I've read on the Canes/Gators fan boards and other free sample recruiting websites is that Golden is really high on the kid and keeps calling him; however, I also understand that Gray also speaks to him on a near daily basis. Though he told Tennessee he is solid on VT, I think that (from reading what I have) that it will come down between Miami and Tech. He's a hometown kid for the Canes who shocked some people down there when he committed to VT without a visit essentially waking some people up on Miami's staff. He's also drawing interest from LSU, Notre Dame, UNC, and UF and apparently we should also be watching out for ND coming in late in the process according to an article from some Notre Dame magazine (don't really but THAT for a second). Personally, and I obviouslly could be (and probably am) way off on this, I think emotionally he wants to got to Miami and is holding out hope for somethign but he knows the best case scenario for future winning/NFL draft status would be to go to Tech in order to work under Torian and Bud. Honestly, the seed of questioning planted by the coaching staff at VT over the past decades is perfect because recruits are not just crossing us off the list after a quick once over, particularly linebackers, running backs, and boundary corners. When all is said and done I wouldn't be surprised either way but would be a little more so if Manning ends up at Miami for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

Worst thing about Manning's commitment status is this has been going on for a while now ever since literally THE DAY he verbally committed to VT (apparently someone on Shannon's staff and later on Golden's staff called him after he announced to get him to change his mind) and it just has not gotten much press until recently due to one reason ore another. I heard about the whole thing in passing from someone I know and decided to get on some Canes and Gator fan boards to check it out. On Heather's ACC Blog this and some of the past de-commitments from Tech and other prestigious programs set off Hite on his ranting about how the "younger generation" has no understanding of recruit commitments, even verbals.

Man, that's tough to hear that Manning is still keeping an eye on Miami. As duffmanhokie1568 said above me, hopefully he'll realize his best shot at NFL is through Blacksburg and will make the choice to stay committed. It's an expected controversy though when a young kid is getting recruited from a big school like Miami in his hometown. Hopefully VT can still get the nod.

On the subject of Mario Nixon, I'm EXTREMELY excited about this kid. I mean super stoked. I think he has the physical tools to be an excellent wide receiver at Tech and could be a freak athlete for us. Marcus Davis-esque? I hope he turns into what I'm envisioning because when I heard he committed to VT, I immediately became excited for what he has to offer.
