Hey guys, I know you're out there. I couldn't find anything on other forum topics, so here goes. For starters, let's just sound off on who is in Blacksburg this semester (as the rest of this post won't garner much discussion).
It's my first semester in Blacksburg. I'm a graduate student in EE (undergrad from Auburn). Any other EE students or any students who are on TKP wanna show me the ropes of Blacksburg? Can't spend a ton (graduate student - duh), but have some free time this next week.

Nice! So is senior year in ChemE the toughest, or is it more project work, tech electives, and sorta waiting to graduate? EE seems to have junior year as toughest load.
They tell me junior year is the hardest. 2nd semester junior year is lovingly referred to as "hell semester"

Well done. I did 4 years of undergrad, 5 of grad school, then stuck around another year while my wife finished vet school and she bought the tickets that last year. 10 football seasons. Winning.
Ha! This is my last semester. I've loved my time here but I'm just ready to move onto something new
I hear the 5th year can be rough. Unless you've had friends that cooped you have to start over with only a year to go. As someone who moved back to blacksburg a few years after graduating, I've learned that you love the place, but it's not the same as when all your college friends were here. But you make new friends and memories and as soon as you let it stand on its own (that is, not try to recreate your first four years), it's still awesome.
I had a friend who took 8 years to leave tech and his talking about his 5th/6th year sounds a lot like my talking about my 1st/2nd year back.

What is a TKP Hokie? I am..... But, I am here for all semesters because I live here!!! Came here from the 757 in 2008.
I am now on my 8th fall in Blacksburg out of the last 9. Had 4 for undergrad, moved away for a year to get my first job, and found a job in C-burg a year later (company has since moved to the CRC) and have spent 3+ years here since. And both of my brothers start undergrad at Tech today (one as a transfer), but neither of them are on TKP.
I'm a freshman Accounting major. I've been coming to the burg since I was real little and now I'm finally getting to live here. Lets just say it hasn't disappointed yet.
5 years of undergrad (gotta love engineering co-ops) and I'm here pretty much until I die for grad school, so yeah, welcome to the party.

A few things really stand out on the first day:
1) Everyone is so in shape here! Auburn had significantly more out of shape guys than Blacksburg seems to.
2) the food deserves to be ranked high. Every place here beats every place from Auburn (other than having a Chick-Fil-A on campus).
3) I forgot how young 18-20 year olds look. I'm only mid-20's but dang. Feel sort like an old man on campus
4) the weather is 10000x better than Auburn. Walked around campus for about an hour and am not a puddle.

Welcome to town! Be prepared for the winter. This time of year fools you into thinking that it will be like this forever! And if you don't want to look like one of those 18 year olds; you don't have to look both ways when crossing the drill field loop road.

I feel somewhat prepared for the winter weather. Got a decent pair of walking boots and a good jacket. no long johns though...
Just a jacket? Ooh, you're gonna need something thicker than that. And while I never wore long johns, I did have one pair of flannel lined jeans that I would break out when the wind chill went below zero.
I like to tell people it starts snowing around Halloween and stops around Spring Break. Last year the day before I left for Florida for SB it snowed 4 inches. There was a point last February when it got up to 35 one day and everybody was out in t-shirts and shorts. And that wind is crazy, I'm pretty thin so I get blown off course a lot.
I remember my freshman year I refused to take my winter stuff back to school with me after fall break. I figured I'd be fine with layering and hoodies and I'd get the heavy duty stuff when I went home for Thanksgiving. Within a week of returning from fall break, I was on the phone begging my parents to mail me a big box with my coat, sweaters, etc.
But enough with the horror stories. It really is true that as long as you bundle up appropriately you'll be fine. Just prioritize warmth over style. There are always some poor freshman girls when it first gets cold who try to look cute and just end up looking frostbit.
Wait wait wait...you mean Uggs, a Northface and a Pumpkin Spice Latte will NOT keep you warm?
Graduated in '97. We were walking into the stadium on May 10th, and it was flurrying. MAY!
When I got back down here last Tuesday, I was hanging with one of my friends and we were talking about how it's a little chilly transitioning from DC summer. Then I was like we should stop complaining it'll get actually cold soon, it's Blacksburg it'll probably be snowing by the end of the week hahaha I'm so funny. Except an hour later she showed me a screengrab of a forecast that had it flurrying on Friday. The forecast changed, but still, the weather could do anything, anytime, anywhere with no warning around here.
I mean, I've got hats/beanies, gloves, etc and a couple big jackets.
Most worried about the lower half. I have not been through a winter where it was consistently windy and sub-15ish degrees or whatever.
invest in long johns. The flannel/fleece lined jeans work great until they come out of your boot and 10 degree blacksburg wind rushes right up your leg. 6 to -1 in 0.25 seconds flat.
One of my tricks for beating the cold is finding routes through buildings to where you are only outside between buildings. Of course, if you have to cross the drillfield this tactic is kind of moot.
Ooh, yes, I figured out how to get almost entirely across the academic side of campus while staying indoors. Some buildings butt up against each other, there are a number of above-ground walkways, and there's at least one underground tunnel.

Then there's all those mechanical rooms that connect to the steam tunnel network...
Haha, yup, that was my route exactly, just in the other direction. I lived in Hillcrest, so after class I'd take it all the way to Davidson before heading out into the elements and up that dadgum hill. Didn't always do it, since it took longer, but I definitely made use of it during heavy rain and bitter cold.
There is a Chick-Fil-A in the Hokie Grill food court (same building as Owens, but facing the on campus book store). It's got a limited menu, though.
I think his point was that the CFA, being the best that Auburn had to offer, was the only place better than the worst dining facility on Tech's campus. Not that I know of such things.

I'm around. I was a history major (yes, yes, laugh it up) but I let some personal issues get in the way. Now I'm just working and trying to get my stuff sorted out. I'll go back to school eventually but getting me right comes first.
