What I want to know is the extent of Dadi and Marshall's injuries. The coaches are mostly hush about it and seem to be brushing it under the rug as nothing. But often it's these pesky injuries that turn into season ending injuries in the first couple games. I really want to see this dline all the way through the season to cap a great career for these guys. They really deserve it (Maddy included).

He's no good to me dead.

I mean, Marshall hasn't even missed any practice time, even as a precautionary measure. They said he rolled the same ankle that he had the surgery on and it scared him. Kind of a Paul Pierce situation.

Word is that Dadi broke one of his fingers and will have to wear a soft cast for a while. If I had to guess it would be through the non conference slate, but since he may re-aggravate it that may extend throughout the season. Considering he, Fuller, Ezekiel Elliot, and many others have played with similar injuries to the hands and wrists I wouldn't expect either to miss playing time unless they just aren't playing well.

Guess it's my day to say it:

Can we start playing football already? :)

How do you guys feel about Settle being redshirted? Wasn't he one of the best players in the nation as a recruit?

Why not use a guy that big on short yardage situations? I'm a little surprised by this and I heard he was having a good camp.

I know you guys are deep but if he's as good as his rep, he'll be gone in 3 years anyway.

Few inside d lineman leave that early. He is good but he has rust and needs to lose a little weight.

It should also help him academically. I know people don't think that angle too often but it can make a huge difference in confidence if an athlete gets out ahead of their classes and doesn't have academic ineligibility breathing down their neck.

he should redshirt IMO. Needs to live in the weight room and add strength and lose bad weight. We're too deep at the position for him to have much of an impact this year and with his academic issues it wouldn't hurt for him to focus more on that this year and stay eligible.

He just came in too big and too late to really compete for a spot. His weight gain is what dropped him to a 4 star in all services but ESPN, which is lazy about updating. As far as I understand hes shown flashes of greatness in camp but didnt have the consistency needed. Unlike someone like Sobzak who came in quietly from his redshirt year and had a great camp. I still think he'll make his way onto the field at some point this year

Yea I remember him possibly being a top 5 player at the beginning of last year. Don't follow recruiting too closely.

Sounds like he went on the Derrick Green plan, whom I'm sure you guys remember- I believe he was a Virginia kid.

Yeah, pretty much. Difference is, everyone in VA knew Green was overrated from the get go. He just made it worse.

I remember a lot of scuttlebutt about that. I know OSU removed their offer.

Those are the kind of guys who made up Brady Hokes recruiting classes. Many guys who looked good in pads and had 4 stars but didn't have great offers or great football ability.

I'm fine with him redshirting for two reasons:

1. I trust the VT defensive staff. If they say he's not ready, that's good enough for me.
2. We have no great need for another quality DT coming into the season. We can still play him if injuries require it.

I like it. We don't have a great track record of sending kids to the NFL early, so its likely he'll be a 4 year starter here. A RS-Sr Tim Settle anchoring our defense in 2019? Yes, I would like that very much

My man... Coach Wiles.

What a gem.

Leonard. Duh.

Walker said he'll use the season to get stronger and further adjust to being slimmer. He's down to about 281 pounds right now after playing up around 290 in the spring. He did so by starting to eat better. "I stopped eating at D2, because D2 will put weight on you," he said.

I know that from experience, Ricky.

Ranking is mainly based on potential. Ranking doesnt mean a guy is going to come in and be a world beater off the bat.Settles ranking was based primarily on size. He still has to gain the skill, stamina, strength to match that great size. If he does than he will be a great player. If he doesn't he will be a good player but maybe not great. He is currently well behind the other dts and right now there is little separation between 4 thru 6. Which also allowed for Walkers redshirt. There is nothing to substantiate that settle would be an upgrade in any situation at this point thus no reason for him to play. He may eventually be all world but right now he is unquestionably low man especially with SS improvement.

slight correction.. Settle's ranking was based on more than size.. it was his combination of size and explosive quickness. 6-3 330lb Junior who was just blowing people off the ball, unloading rip moves, spin moves and bull rushes to meet the RB in the backfield. Very rare combo = 5-star.

Then gained an extra 30lb, and while he still displayed that initial burst, he didn't have the strength or stamina to win sustained battles against good OL at camps. Plus his technique needs work, although he is pretty good at getting low for a guy his size. Toss in academic concerns and his recruiting service rating was dropped from being a unanimous top25 player / 5-star to a consensus top 200 / 4-star level player.

So like you said, - to be an impact player on the FBS level he's going to have to cut weight, add strength, improve his stamina, and refine his technique.
