I saw this idea on another forum and thought it was pretty cool. Predict what you think our offense will run for the first play of the season (assuming we start at our own 25).
My prediction is an outside zone handoff to JCC to the right side for a gain of 1.5 yards.
These last 6 days will be painful to withstand.

I'm going to say similar play, but it goes to the left side for no gain.
Bubble screen for old times sake.
How I hope that "old times" is where that play remains.
I wish there was a smiling Steiney gif for this
Sneak it to the fullback out of the I-formation. Oh wait...
Play-action pass to Cam Phillips for 8 yards.
Package play: outside zone to the boundary/play action pass.
I have no clue except that it will be a right side handoff for a two-yard loss or did we see that one last year?
I'm hoping Beamer has looked at Loeffler hard in the eye and given him one order, "I don't care what you do, just win the friggin' game."
My ultimate wish: Teller pulls and body slams Joey Bosa and Trey Edmunds runs by everybody and we have another gif of a befuddled fan. But there is no Bosa this year.
We'll have to settle for Teller bulldozing Raekwon McMillian
And when he's done, Ghostface Killah better watch his six. Wu Tang is for the children!
Teller slams Bosa on the sideline while he is in a sweatsuit
And points at some of Bosas family in the crowd!
Loeffler goes big. Play action with both Bucky and Ford on fly routes. Whoever's more open gets it for a 75 yard TD.
...then I wake up and think JC up the middle for no gain...sigh.
I think we used to call that the Andre Davis Play. Good god was Vick good at that play.
after a 35 yard return from McMiillian-->I'm going Power I left dive behind Teller and McLaughlin for a 3 yard gain.. then Lefty goes for the Home-run early with a combo route-> 20-30 yard Post for ford and a 15 yard out for bucky... safety will see Bucky and jump that route while IFord goes streaking for the TD
upvote for the Necessary Roughness reference
I'll take play action to Bucky on a seam route.
Play action to Sam out of the backfield, trucks 2 defenders on the way to a first down
fumblerooski
Jet sweep play action pass down the seam
Jet red slant strong arrow I 3 blue ghost X on 2.
Easy bubble screen to Ford, Bucky blocking. 7 yd gain.
I'm trying to be more optimistic about bubble screens given the receiving corps' renewed focus on blocking under coach Burden. I'd still prefer to see bubble screens where the receiver is moving towards the qb though, helps the play develop a little faster.
This concept you are defining is referred to as the Rocket or Tunnel screen. Bubble is intended to create an alley up the sideline and to get an athlete into space.
JCC off tackle to the left side catches a crease and burns the DBs for a looooong TD run.
Play action roll out, see that Ford is not open deep and dump to the tight end for 7.
Which tight end? Bucky or Malleck?
Doesn't matter
If it's a 7 yard dump off, that's probably Malleck.
If the roster said who was starting I could tell you, but last I saw it was listed as "or". I'd guess Malleck, as I expect Bucky to be split wide more from practice reports, and expect the play action to be set up from a power formation, but said "tight end" instead of a name because I wasn't sure who would start, and they could run that play with either. I think they run that early because of how it sets up the same thing to Rogers later, behind Bossa's sub, and keeps pressure on the backer behind him to set up runs to that side.
Sam Rogers lines up as the Wild Turkey QB and he pitches it off to Sam Rogers on a Jet Sweep Motion but he takes a step back and launches one down field 70 yards to connect for a TD with Sam Rogers.
God this would be amazing. Sideline would all be like

The play is called "Damn Rogers"
I think you mean Hughes. Check the depth chart.
Inside zone to the left from the pistol for a gain of 3 yards. JC Coleman on the carry.
I think this is the game starter for every game.
The NFL is abolishing the kickoff in favor of a 3 yard carry for JCC. Guy's gonna rack up some frequent flier miles.
I read the last part in McChain's voice. If that's what you were going for then bravo.
Flea Flicker for the 80yd score to set the tone. Well, one can hope.
That was actually the first play from scrimmage against Boise State, and if Tyrod didn't short-arm it, Boykin would have walked it to the house. They did get the pass interference though.
I've been watching ALOT of past season Hokie games the past month. I can pretty much recite Brad Nessler's play by play from last year's OSU game straight from memory.
...and the touchdown is the capper of the night
Being a "Professional Leonard" sounds like it's the tits.
Was working on a merger to become "Leonard on a Treadmill", but we couldn't get Legal to buy in.
Frickin Mike O'Cain with his "it's better to throw the deep balls short to draw P.I." bullshit.
I thought I was going to be cute and say a run by JCC to the right side for no legible gain. We've all watched the Hokies for way too long.
I'll take 2nd and 9 over 1st and 20
No Dude, we just watch them very precisely.
QB kneeldown to end the game. All special teams and defense scores for us.
I think we run to the right and attack the absence of Bosa. I still think it will be a stretch play but wouldn't be surprised to see a toss right.
jet sweep fake and hand-off to JCC for short gain
Agreed. OSU will be looking for the jet sweep. So probably, jet sweep fake, run behind Teller, but gain should be 4-5 yds.
Man you guys took all the good predictions already...ok then Reverse to Sam Rogers who heaves it down the field to Brewer for the TD. *drops mic*
This was actually attempted in last years game but Rogers didn't pull the trigger, tucked it, and ran for ~10 yards. His target was going to be Brewer.
Oh I remember, its exactly why I made my prediction. One of the announcers for the game actually commented on how good of a decision Sam made by not trying to force a throw as the play called for and instead picking up the first down with his feet
Counter They'll sell out to stop the run over teller, but we run over Conte instead! O.0
Life is short; go deep
Out and up double move on play 1. I like it.
..said no VT OC in the last 15 years.
Punt
Beamerball baby!
Do we have any receivers with a gifted leg? We could fake a reverse and punt. Gives the defense more rest
This guys says we run the ol' picket fence.
Beamer announces it's his last season to team before kick in locker room in an emotional tear jerker speech.
Team comes out inspired.
Enter Sand Man is most electric and intimidating.
Herbstreet turns to Fowler in the booth and says "hold me".
Sam Rogers busts 80 yard run first play channeling his inner Bo Jackson from Tecmo Superbowl.
Earth quake machine on campus explodes.
Urban goes to look for pizza but all he can find are turkey leg stands
Miami 2003 all over again.
So begins story book ending season.
Oh God Yes,
Unless he is fired or something serious happens health wise, this will not be Beamer's last year. He wants to coach at the Battle for Bristol next year. Otherwise, everything else works.
Beamer announces that he wants to beat at least one top 5 ranked team before retiring after winning the NC next season
Sorry, dude. Not finding that Sam Rogers run in here. Maybe the first play of the second half?![]()

Live footage of Sam Rogers' next carry
I lol'd at "earthquake machine"
What I want to see: Post route by Ford caught 15 yds downfield, the Bucky absolutely levels the safety and Ford scampers all the way for a long TD.
What I expect to see: handoff to JCC for a 3 yard gain up the middle.
If we run for 3 yards up the middle on the first play, I won't be mad.
The new line catches them off guard.
New Oline a concern?
New OL, old OL, any OL in blacksburg is a concern.
Brewer in the gun, quick pass to Malleck for 5 over the middle
worked a lot last year. I'm in
Bubble screen to the right side. Testing the replacement's feet and getting JC into some space.
Deep post route to Ford for an 80yd TD pass, making the score 14-0 (our first 7 come from opening kickoff return to the house)
Man we're fighting hard for more stuff to talk about. This waiting is literally making it impossible to focus at work...

I'll be happy if there is no illegal procedure penalty.
Prepare to be disappointed.
Touchdown.
3 WR 1 TE Set. Inside zone for 1 yard. JC.
Hook and Ladder, Dwayne Lawson 65 yard TD pass to Tyrod Taylor who pitches back to Tim Settle who scoots it to the house untouched!
Settle untouched. Pshh. He is good for trucking at least 3 defenders.
Nah. Settles got that breakaway speed..been burnin-and-learnin, playa
I am surprised no one went with 75yard TD pass to CJ Carrol who was left uncovered because the defense thought he was a middle school fan who wondered onto the field in his gameday outfit.
That's sick, man, a very good sick.
The touchdown play.
We should call that like every play
end around by Newsome
just to let them know we remember
Curt Newsome.
I'd rather predict our last offensive play: QB kneel in the victory formation!
I'm placing bets on this one:
I really hope this becomes a thing. So proud.
Dream: 75 yard PA Pass to Bucky for a TD.
Reality: Zone handoff for no gain.
End around. Stroman. Probably no gain or slight loss.
JC coleman for 50 over the left as wyatt teller pancakes the entire OSU defense
beating up on duke lol
The ONLY play.

Anybody remember this from Tecmo Super Bowl? The reverse pitch back to the QB?
WR Reverse Pass - Richard Johnson to Josh Hyman - or as it was known when it happened in 2004 - Dick to Hyman.
Computer Blue
Hopefully something like this!!!!
I hope we aren't down 14 by the time we get our first offensive snap.
Play action (with JCC looking strong in pass protection) with Brewer to Malleck on a skinny post (or deep curl) for 16 yards in the soft part of the zone. Then they run the Fr. Trey Edmonds Alabama off-tackle play for 59 yards and a score.
Or a draw play for yard.
OMAHA!
False start
Fumbled snap.
I'd be very happy with a fumble return by a linebacker for a TD. Just sayin'.

Oops, read your name after I commented. Disregard
Read Option to JCC for 2 yard gain
Jet Sweep to Stroman
Didn't know where to post this but I found this quote from a Buckeye fan over on Elevenwarriors and I must say it is very pleasing to read as a Hokie. Not all of their fans are complete homers.
obviously
Run JCC left behind teller. 2 yd gain but Teller lifts the MF tackle and pancakes the dude - tone set for game. Hokies win.
Any play besides this play is the wrong answer:
make animated gifs like this at MakeaGif
Spider 2 Y Banana
So, nothing to do with our offense, but the first play from scrimmage (our defense when we win the toss and defer) will be an interception return for a touchdown, or a sack/fumble recovery to give our offense good position.
Lane Stadium will be a madhouse if that happens. Gives me chills just thinking about it
Can you imagine if their first offensive play is a delay of game or false start becaus of crowd noise?
something like this then???
