Ohio State Blasting "Enter Sandman" At Practice

I'm glad they have such good taste in music!

Won't do anything to simulate the effect when we add in 66,000 people jumping, yelling, and shaking their keys.

Ohio State Is Blasting "Enter Sandman" At Practice While Preparing For Virginia Tech

Good. I hope they go to bed gripping their pillow tight.

They should be pumping crowd noise because chances are, that's all they'll hear after kickoff.

Crowd noise isn't supposed to be picked up as seismic activity.

Not the same thing, but nice try.

I sure would like to see VT go up by a touchdown in the first quarter. That place will go nuts.

These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful!

They have no idea what Sandman is about. They have no idea what the Terrordome is. They think they can prepare. They think they can ignore. We will show them otherwise.

The Penn State game last year was the most insane atmoshphere I've ever witnessed. Urban said it was the loudest place he's ever been. And he's taking top Florida teams to LSU at night.

Hope it helps prepare the Bucks because I expect it to be similar.

The Penn State game last year was the most insane atmoshphere I've ever witnessed. Urban said it was the loudest place he's ever been.

Ya'll have obviously never been to a big night game at Lane. I hope that you're coming to this game, it'll be something awesome to experience. Especially if (as I fully expect) this is a close game into the fourth.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Not going, wish I could. Just saying I doubt it will be much worse than that game. PSU at night in a big game is insane.

I know you guys don't want to acknowledge other schools but they are loud and have 100,000 plus. Main reason the game was so close last year.

And as I said, I expect a similar enviroment.

I know you guys don't want to acknowledge other schools

But who really does when it comes to loudness? Everyone says that they have the loudest stadium. We may not be the loudest out there *ducks* but we do take pride in being a VERY tough environment for opposing teams. And sometimes it's not just the volume, it's the timing of the volume. VT fans are known for being very football savvy and knowing when to be loud to disrupt the opposing team. Not saying other fans aren't, but that's part of our reputation. And honestly, if this game is down to the wire it will be insanely loud and crazy.

And I will be there, Season ticket holder since 2001, and went to many games as a student '96-'99 (came back for as many as I could in '00).

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

I feel you. Going to be insane on Monday.

I won't say that we're necessarily louder than Penn State. But we're very proud of the fact that we're as loud as we are for only having 66,000 fans. At nearly 150% Lane's capacity, PSU had better be just as loud, if not louder. We might be the loudest stadium per capita in the country.

Onward and upward

I think it's important to note that our stadium may or may not be the loudest, but we have an argument for being consistently loud throughout the game. Many stadiums only get loud on 3rd down. Our fans will be loud from kickoff until the end. So Penn State may have been louder at some point, but few games I've seen have fans as loud as we can be for as long as we have gone in past games. And it doesn't die at the end of the game either. Just look at that Miami video. I would regularly have absolutely no voice for 2 days after the game and I miss those days dearly...

unfortunately, the opponent doesn't care so much about per capita stats. They care how little they can think with their ears ringing. I think we'll get that done just fine...

I love Lane Stadium. I was there for the 2003 Miami game, and the 1999 Clemson Game (which was the game where Corey Moore welcomed us to the "Terrordome"). Those are the loudest Lane games I've been to.

LSU game 2007 was the loudest place I've ever been in my life. I truly feared for my safety.

Leonard. Duh.

I'm really hoping it's going to be just like that 2003 Miami game where Lane was rocking an hour before kick-off and throughout the game. I'm expecting to not have a voice for two days after the game. Monday needs to hurry up. This week can't move fast enough.

I'm hoping this as well. To have all the #BUTTS in the seats way before kickoff and have Lane rocking when it's go time.

I was in Baton Rouge in 2007. There is absolutely no place in this country like Death Valley on a Saturday night.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

Actually we know we dont think the 'shoe is the loudest. Unfortunately it isnt even close. By all accounts the texas and usc night games were rocking insanely hard compared to usual, but still not up there with happy valley/death valley et al.

We are just as loud if not louder at 66k vs 100+k

Engineers help me out on this, but I know the dB scale is logarithmic, so 113dB is not merely 2 units higher than 111dB. 113 is quite a bit louder on the ears than 111, correct?

What I'm trying to say is that it's not like comparing 90 degrees versus 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

Yes, technically 113 vs 111 decibels would be harder on the ears using logarithmic scale than 92 vs 90 degrees would be hotter on a linear scale, but not by much. Visual aid below:

He's no good to me dead.

So, how possible is it for us to reach the "threshold of pain"? Bud Foster would approve.

I think you answered your own question. Bud Foster yelling would read 200 on the dB scale. Little known fact, in the Mic'd up video yesterday, fourteen microphones were destroyed during production.

"Exit light..."

Every 6 dB is a doubling of power for sound measurements. So 2 dB is a notable step from 111 dB.

Here is some more info to help:

dB of sound pressure level (dB SPL) is defined as: 20 log10 p1/p0 where p1 is actually measured sound pressure level of a given sound, and p0 is a reference value of 20Pa, which corresponds to the lowest hearing threshold of the young, healthy ear. In the logarithmic scale the range of human ear's audible sounds is from 0 dB SPL (hearing threshold) to 120-140 dB SPL (pain threshold) (see table 1 below).

This all assumes the measuring device has the same p0 reference as stated in the above quote - which it likely does.

113 dB would be quite annoying for their offense for an entire game duration.

Wasn't this game in 2012 not 2011? Which makes it even more impressive since we were like 5-5 when that game happened.

Urban said it was the loudest place he's ever been.

I have watched this vid 20 times. Will probably another 20. And..Tweedy makes the tackle. As always! anosu can learn the words and sing along! Somebody should post this on 11W!

This is where I almost felt bad for Harris, at the end of the clip. I just caught a glimpse of Tyrod shaking his hand. Always class.

Ah you think Enter Sandman is your ally? You merely adopted Enter Sandman. We were born in it, molded by it. We didn't see the crowd jumping until it was already gameday, by then it was nothing to us but deafening.

This settles it. Someone needs to do a version of Bane's mask in maroon and orange and make that their shtick at games, in the vein of Leonidas of Blacksburg or the maroon fro guy with the lunchpail.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

According to osu fans on eleven warriors it won't be 66,000 tech fans, they say their bringing 20,000 bucknuts, sounds like alot to me.

Damn. I hope somebody brought a cornhole set for the 15,000 fans out in the parking lot during the game.

Tech fans are known for being very smart when it comes to tickets, the most visitors I've ever seen in lane was prob LSU, think they brought around 10,000 or so.

Those guys were nuts. They showed up in the student parking lot on Wednesday.

Turns out I'm going to the game. I've been practicing my yelling this week to make sure my voice has the stamina to last the full game.

Just out of curiosity, how does one practice yelling? I want to make sure I have my form down correctly

"These people, are losing their minds! This is beautiful"

You have to perfect a low drawn out continuous bellow that is both monontinous and continuous. You have to be able to continue this through all four quarters while maintaining the ability to change pitch and volume during third downs and "key plays". Losing your voice in the second quarter is a vast misalocation of resources.

Pro tip from a musician: if you can, tune your bellow to a quarter pitch above or below the person next to you. There tends to be a bit of a drone of the same pitch that everyone sort of instinctively matches. If you're intentionally off-key, the dissonance is pleasantly annoying. Now if only I could have gotten a more coordinated effort together, it would have sounded worse than a vuvuzela coming from an entire section of the East Stands...

Alternatively, if anOSU begins to snap the ball with a clap instead of a verbal signal, try to get all the people in the lower sections to applaud fanatically right as everyone comes set.

"Exit light..."

As a fellow musician (cellist here), a Tech game is the only time dissonance is appealing. I try to get as close to a minor 2nd as I can.

"These people, are losing their minds! This is beautiful"

Outstanding. This is a pro right here, ladies and gentlemen.

"Exit light..."

I'll be in 506 if anyone wants lessons

"These people, are losing their minds! This is beautiful"

If that being the case, why not just have the MV brass and Saxes aim their horns directly at Barret and Jones and execute it?

"Sportsmanship"

"Exit light..."

Hmmm. I view it more as sharing the gift of dissonant music education.

That is not something that is a "gift".

"These people, are losing their minds! This is beautiful"

That would be awesome, but the team would get a penalty if the band is ever playing while the ball is in play. They can make all kinds of noise right up to it, but if they're playing when the ball is snapped on the opposing team, bad news. Or, at least that's what we were told.

YouTube videos with "Bosnia", "Ganga" have examples of the highlanders doing this. It's not pleasant music but you can hear the volume spike when they hit dissonant notes. Almost made a separate post about this. Not too late for somebody to pick that up!

And every game I've lost my voice by half time we have either struggled or lost!

I'm sure this all sounds really dumb, but you've got to get your voice in shape. It's hard to make it to halftime your first game back before your voice started to give out, but by midseason you can yell forever. Yelling a few times into a pillow (so you don't freak out the neighbors) as hard as you can until you get that scratchy feeling in your throat really helps.

Excellent. So anOSU will be prepared to play during the 1.5 minutes prior to the game. That leaves them unprepared for the subsequent 60.

Seriously though, the lack of respect and acknowledgement over at 11Ws for Foster and DBU is appalling. To think I actually requested membership there. I hearby rescind said request.

They also love calling lane stadium a nice practice field, they insist the noise can't be that bad since lane only holds 66,000. I love it, they will be in for a rude awakening.

I found the 107K at the Shoe particularly quite most of the game

The Dude Abides

I love reading some of their delusional posts, crap stadium, 20,000 fans, 56-0 beatdown, bud foster is gonna get his if he runs the bear d again, blah blah blah.

I also thought the same thing. I'm not sure whether it was because of where I was sitting, but I'd take Lane in a noise battle any day of the week over the Shoe. The only time I felt it got loud was on some third downs.

@vtscottyb

quite what?

I feel like an 11W apologist over here but if you actually read through most posts (I've only done it on a few threads but it's been consistent) there's maybe 10-15% of that. The vast majority are pretty reasonable and do show quite a bit of respect for us (even when the 10-15% mock them for said respect). It's an Ohio State football fansite, there will be homers, just have to ignore and move on.

I agree I just get a kick out of what some buckeye fans truly believe, the realistic fans usually call them out pretty quick and actually make good pts in techs favor, overall osu fans are pretty cool people, most respect tech and think tech is a classy program.

Look, I'm not asking that UM, staff and team systematically kneel down to kiss Bud Foster, Torian Gray and Sam Rogers' asses. I'm just saying they ALL need to kneel down and kiss Bud Foster, Torian Gray and Sam Rogers' asses.

I feel like if you're doing this, then the atmosphere has already had an affect on you. And as many of you have already said, it will be totally different with 66,000 screaming their heads off.

I expect Lane Stadium will be the most hostile environment we play in all year. Blasting music helps a little, but doesn't really compare to 66,000 screaming fans. However, most of the players starting for Ohio State played @ Penn State last year when they had a crowd of 110,000 screaming idiots. I hate to admit this, but Penn State fans are much louder and crazier than Ohio State or Michigan fans. Their stadium also holds in the noise extremely well. The players constantly complain about the ground shaking the entire game and fans pelt our players with batteries, beer bottles, and rocks before and after the game. In summary, these fans are not only insane but also borderline criminal (see Jerry Sandusky cover up for more info on this).

Anyways, I think Lane Stadium will be the toughest and loudest venue we play at this year. Our players will struggle with the noise at times and it will be a significant advantage for VT. No doubt about it. I just think these players have played in a worse environment though (PSU). Unless I am mistaken and your fans are unruly enough to try and harm our players. But I think you guys have more class than that. Looking forward to the game on Monday!

yeah, we like to let the cousins hold the title of "a-holes who throw batteries at fans" I didn't know PSU did that, too. Will have to mention that one to a PSU alum friend of mine.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I keep hearing the 66k followed up immediately by the Penn St numbers...

Trust me, the Penn St environment might be loud, but its not intimidating like Lane is. When you go to a venue of 110k, you expect the place to be loud. You don't expect a stadium of nearly half that size to be just as crazy. Its the same reason that a place like Cameron Indoor is so highly regarded with 10k fans when being compared to places like the Smith Center, Rupp Arena, etc, with crowds over twice as large.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

have you been to a night game at penn state. You guys LSU, PSU, Oregon all probably swear they are the loudest.

And no, I don't care about decibel levels at different parts of the game.

Please scroll up to the picture of the decibel meter.

Ah so you mean playin at Penn st is alot like playin at west va (batteries, beer bottles, coins, staring fights, cussing children ) I totally can see that picture, been there done that. Gotta love those classy schools. I can promise you won't see that here at vt, tech fans will prob even invite osu fans to tailgate and have a good time.

I posted this on another thread yesterday but felt it was more relevant here.

I found this quote from a Buckeye fan over on Elevenwarriors and I must say it is very pleasing to read as a Hokie. Not all of their fans are complete homers.

The stadium seats about 66,000+. If you want my personal assessment of the stadium I'll be happy to say. I've been to multiple games in the Shoe, not to mention I was at last years VT game in the shoe, and man that was a hard pill to swallow. Reverting back to Lane Stadium I had the privilege to go see the 2011 Miami game when Jacory Harris was QB and it was deep in the 4th quarter with VT up 35-31 (I think it's what it was). There was about a minute and a half left on the clock and it was up to Bud Fosters defense to come up with a stop. That stadium was louder than any Ohio State game I've ever been to. I say that with no disrespect it was truly a site to behold. Immediately following the first play that was snapped, the Hokie Defense came up with a big stop, Enter Sandman was played and I've never seen anything like it. It was electric in that stadium. I think the numbers game is a little outplayed here because those fans know how to get rowdy. I just hope we have enough Buckeye fans in there to try and offset but I have a feeling that wont happen. Here's to a legendary game in Blacksburg, I'm expecting one for the ages. Let's be real here, VT outside the top 25 is a slap in the face with all the talent that roster possesses. They got unlucky with injuries last year. I fully expect VT to bring everything they got, but then again, so will we. As long as we have Urban I think our Buckeyes will do fine in Lane.
- Buckeyesprize

He's no good to me dead.

No doubt it will be louder than the shoe. I don't think any Ohio State fan will debate that. The shoe really isn't loud at all to be honest. I think our players will be surprised by the noise at Lane, but I don't think they will be intimated. I don't imagine they will walk into Lane and just be in complete shock mode. We aren't a MAC team.

I agree, which, by the way, makes for very boring internet conversations with 5 days left til kickoff...

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I concur. I understand that these next 5 days will include ridiculous levels of homerism on both TKP and 11W. Its already getting bad on 11W with some predicting Ohio State winning by 40. I try to ignore these idiots, but I realize they are just getting overly excited and losing grip on reality. Happens to all of us I guess.

This is especially true for the "Cupcake" Phase of any romantic relationship...

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

I imagine your fans and players will be surprised more so by the noise relevant to the size of stadium and number of fans. They will probably be thinking "this is about as loud as PSU", since technically speaking they are almost the same decibel level.

He's no good to me dead.

That's about what I expect.

This post made me smile

I have "SPL meter" on my iPhone. Going to screen grab it during the game and post (probably after since cell reception in Lane sucks). Excited to see how high it will go.

Edit: I forgot I have a real one, too. Will try to remember to take and use it.

We put the K in Kwality

Note on cell reception: Whit is actively working to improve it. When I worked at VT he would often ask employees what needed to be changed and he said that was high up on his list.

As a Hokie fan that won't be in Lane on Labor Day, I am requesting that osu and their fans wish to never hear that song again after game night. If you are there, please make sure they are welcomed but at the end, never wish to return. Yell and scream and cheer for all of those that can't be there in person to do it. Go Hokies!

All Maroon, all the time!

and this is the real point of Urban blasting it. so that when it comes down to the 4th and it gets played and all the Hokie nation starts losing their minds his team doesn't get awed. they get mad. mad because they're tired of hearing that f-ing song. It's a smart move by Urban, but the fans present at the game can still sway that moment.
