This is according to Mike Barber:
two counts of simple assault and one count of malicious wounding. The sophomore from Harrisonburg is being held without bail, according to a source at the jail.
This doesn't read well, but I'm not a lawyer, let's try to reserve judgement until more details emerge.

Wow.
Malicious wounding is a felony that carries up to 20 years in prison. It also has a presumption against bond, so the magistrate isn't supposed to give him a bond. Wounding is considered a breaking of the skin, so my gut is that this was a barfight where he busted someone open and/or knocked out a guy's tooth.
You're right about the presumption, but 18.2-51 isn't really "malicious wounding" but requires a wounding or bodily injury. I know its commonly refered to as MW, but thats the short name of the statute. He also has to have acted with malicious intent and the intent to maim, disfigure or kill. Hard to tell what will happen in the end until the facts come out.
I'm basing it off my experience with that code section.
I don't know the legal definition of "maim" but isn't the point of getting into a fight to maim the other person? Especially if you are defending your GF? Maybe I've been fighting wrong...
well...this might clear up the running back race a little bit...right?
#toosoon
Shane's job just got a lot easier. Now there are only two real guys he needs to focus on.
#EnrollDrewHarris
Uh-oh. Not good. He seemed like such a great guy yesterday while we were speaking at autographs too.
Speaking of Harris, what's the news with him, haven't heard anything? Is he still trying to enroll at Tech for the summer?
There hasn't been much on him at all recently, but he's still trying to enroll for the summer. We should know around June I believe, but anything as of now is just speculation regarding his chances it seems
Can't be too sure on the source but word on the street within the student body is that he stabbed someone
Wow such a coincidence. I was just talking to my friend yesterday who said her boy friend (who deals) got jumped by Michael Holmes and his friends at a party last year. Wonder if what happened last night was a similar scenario...
Yea, I was talking to my friend literally 35 minutes before the news struck and he was saying that the Harrisonberg players were such thugs
Well.
That pretty much clears Trey Edmunds as the #1 tailback with J.C. Coleman squarely behind him as a change of pace/slot back receiver. After that, it's a CF. I had Edmunds and Holmes as my co-number 1 because either one of them have made a strong case of being the featured back. Unless Drew Harris is ever cleared to be eligible to play this fall, I think the job is now Edmunds to lose.
Damn. It seem every spring there's always a promising player who have a brain fart and make the wrong kind of decision which puts their career in the maroon and orange in serious jeopardy. I really, really hope that Holmes acted in self-defense, but I just don't know because I don't have any facts in front of me. This kind of situation just suck gobbler's balls.
Regardless of self defense or not, what was he doing in a situation like that...?!?!
What an idiot!!!!!
He got into a fight at TOTS and stabbed a guy. Maybe now Kyshoen can return punts by himself.
was it at TOTS?
I'll forgive this question if you are under drinking age without fake id ;)
http://www.topofthestairs.com/
silly goose...I'm sure he along with 90% of the rest of us know what TOTS is...he asked if it was at TOTS which I think it was near it not exactly sure where though
I was actually enjoying retelling this story to my coworkers. "Holmes barely had enough time to get home from the spring game, get showered, and grab his knife before he had to stab someone." Thankfully not true, but for the sake of my retelling, tragically not true.
...That's messed up dude.
"Oh man, can't wait to tell everyone how this kid stabbed somone!!! #VirginiaTechStabies!!!"
Why?
Oh lighten up. The Penn State crowd understands as well as anyone that kids get in trouble, and that sometimes kids don't really get in trouble but they're portrayed as troublemakers. We play the role of bad media with each others' players. All in jest.
Trying to be like Thug U, it'll get after ya.
Those rails are a tough opponent. They'll really get after ya.
Those barstools...tough as nails and they get after ya backsides.
Your bar tab... it'll get after ya
Being called "Branden Ore Part Deux"...it'll really get after ya.
He's just working on winning the Fulmer Cup for us.
He's 19 years old, what the hell was he doing getting into a bar fight (if that's what happened).
well looks like the edmunds/coleman rb duo i want may actually happen. ill be interested to see the full story and detail come out. this is unreal, im sorry but at no time when i went to tech did i even see an effin bar fight. i had more important things to worry about, like all the girls
Call me cynical, and it sucks for Holmes (granted he did STAB someone), but I honestly think being him off the team is a good thing. He was starting to show improvement, but I think Edmunds will be more than sufficient. Now the team can focus on getting two primary backs practice without this competition BS. No more splitting carries three ways. Shane now just has to chose between Trey and JC.
damn. I left around 1, must've happened afterwards
Edmunds, Coleman, Harris?, others... we're counting on you now.
I'm not getting my hopes up about Harris qualifying.
Frankly, Joe, at this point, Tech might as well move on without Drew Harris. That sucks, but right now it's clear that Edmunds is the man until proven otherwise.
Who knew Jim Weaver was actually Captain Picard?
All he needed was stomping on some guy, and he would've had a Marcus Vick hat trick.
underaged drinking and bar fights?? what does he think this is?? the SEC?
Why? Just why?
Looks like he was taking classes at the Cody Journell School of Public Relations
As long as he "accidentally" stabbed the person.
So I was reading the WaPo article from Mark Giannotto to get an update on the situation, and it says that the fight was around the "200 block of College Ave." That's right by Squire's, and of course TOTS. So that kind of confirms the stories you connected people had earlier. What actually caught my eye in the article were the comments. You can see all of them here, but the one that really shocked me was this:
There are other, similar comments, but none as overt. Is this really the general perception of VT? I didn't follow college football closely before I came here, but to me it's always seemed like Beamer runs a relatively tight ship. Yeah, Marcus is still getting arrested, but compared to a lot of other schools, I think we have a pretty good track record. Any thoughts? Is this what we have reaped from HCFB using the word "swag" and doing his dirty dancing?

I avoid the Post anyway because of political reasons, but now I have another reason. I was always under the impression that VT's image was pretty clean (Vick exception). Hopefully, this Holmes issue is a one-time deal and not a domino effect on this year's team.
are you guys new to the vt/uva rivalry? this is their running narrative
Don't look too much into an anonymous post. For all we know it could be Turtle's dad striking again, or just any UVA fan...Even though Smoke got arrested as a high schooler. Loluva
Turtle's dad's grammar was horrible, though, so it could not have been him.
So according to a comment that Holmes' mom left on his facebook, the incident is complicated. Apparently it was started by some people jumping his girlfriend. The link to his page is below.
https://www.facebook.com/michael.holmes.7921?fref=ts
Maybe my definition of "getting jumped" is different because of where I'm from, but TOTS is usually packed and it's nearly impossible to get around. I expect to be bumped into and pushed a little making my way through the crowd.
Also, how did he get in being underage? Was it because he was with his mom or because he was on the football team?
If I knew all it took to get in TOTS and everywhere else DT was to be on the football teams (or basketball team...ahem *cough cough Robert Brown), I would have tried to be a walk-on.
Cannot see. Wanna copy-paste it here?
What his mom said on Facebook:
She must have used a knife to take punctuation out of that paragraph...AM I RIGHT????
Statement retracted. Just a BAD joke.
I don't know if I believe her or not but I totally understand her lack of proper grammar and punctuation. Imagine if your son got into a situation like this. I'd probably type that way too.
Will her story hold up in court? Maybe. Lot's of rumors flying around.
I don't doubt that's what Holmes told his mom.
I WON'T BELIEVE IT UNTIL MOMMA GIRAFFE TELLS US!

Probably Wednesday?
Tada!
http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/54662/accs-lunchtime-links-867
Can we make HD = "Mama Giraffe" a thing? Please?
We should probably slow down a little bit here. We don't know any real details yet except that it happened on the 200 block of College Avenue at 1:50am. Everybody associated that with TOTS, but they start making everybody leave at 1:30am. Also, seeing as how he's 19 and wasn't hit with any alcohol or drunkenness related charges, I'm guessing he wasn't in TOTS. Had he been inside, we'd have a bunch of eye witness accounts. Lets chill out and wait for some details to be released.
Could have been some dumb drunk kids talking smack as they walked by. Happens all the time. I'm waiting this one out. I've gotten into fights myself when my girl is involved.
You've gotten into fights, but did you stab the other guy?
Were the horses on treadmills?
Somebody "invent the (goddamned) future"... then go IN to that future and tell Mr. Holmes to not make a bad decision, regardless of his position on the depth chart; I've always liked the idea that Captain Frank ran a fair but tight ship... but now this jackhole is gonna get a blurb on ESPN....
Brick killed a guy
Edit: Currently watching Anchorman because of this thread
Yeah I saw that!
Has anyone actually confirmed that he was stabbed? From what everyone says about malicious wounding, if the skin is broken, which can easily be done by pounding someone, then that would count.
Kind of sad to see so many people dismiss him when the true and final story isn't out yet.
Might be a crackhead who got hold of the wrong stuff.

I agree Mr. Sorrell...how about everyone remember the Golden Rule...would YOU like to be accused and negatively speculated on in this manner before hardly any facts came out? First, let's be thankful no one was seriously hurt. Second, this is one of our team members...let's give the benefit of the doubt and not be fair weather fans. Let he of you that has never been falsely accused, or stumbled into a bad situation and had his hand forced, cast the first stone. How about taking all the negative speculation energy and put it into prayers and well-wishes for justice and the best outcome for all involved and affected? Come on, people, we're better than this!
Generally agree, except for "no one was seriously hurt." You don't get a MW charge if you didn't seriously hurt the other guy.
This is an important detail:
very true but ive walked out of the hospital with 17 stitches across my ear and neck from glass shattering across my face in a car crash before, before so take that with a grain of salt, ill be real interested to see what the details are. sounds like it couldve been a fight and he just did the most damage
I'm sure he is in prime shape and can rain some damage. Although noses aren't that hard to break.
This is why you let it play out...... Per Mike Barber
http://vtsports.blogs.timesdispatch.com/2013/04/22/holmes-not-arraigned-...
Jimmy Turk's on the case! He'll be reinstated before practices start up again. Hopefully he does to Bama what he did to that dude.
It's starting to look like his mom is telling the truth. While details are still unknown, she was right about it being over a girl. Before y'all talk anymore crap, let's wait til we know the facts.
and she was right about the other three getting arrested
wait a minute. . .so you're telling me that unsubstantiated rumors flying around the internet might not be true?
well i'll be damned
When are these players (not just VT guys) gonna learn that nothing good happens on the street after midnight??...geesh!
A few more details here. http://vtsports.blogs.timesdispatch.com/2013/04/22/holmes-not-arraigned-...
Look, I'm all for speculating, as that's what 90% of this forum is for, but let's ease up on convicting the kid already. I've heard a few things, none of which is stabbing, from someone close to the team. But of course, it's all rumors. I was at TOTS around that time, but don't remember anything but making a beeline for Jimmy John's.
What I DO take issue with is the assumption of something like his mother's grammar is an indication of his guilt, and lumping all Harrisonburg players into the category of thugs. Not all college students and athletes come from a well educated background with parents that went to college, and that's part of what's great about the "American Dream" or whatever you want to call it. So let's maybe cool it on the elitist rhetoric, and understand that a mother would obviously been in a hysteric frame of mind after something like this.
For anyone that's been in or around a fight, things escalate quickly, punches are thrown without foresight, and oftentimes things that aren't meant to happen, do. I don't think there was a stabbing, but I'm sure there's far more to this than simply the face value of a MW charge.
Very well said.
Agreed.
From the police report, sounds like no weapon was involved. Malicious wounding does not require a weapon, and can result from bones breaking or lacerations.
For all we know, Holmes broke the the dudes nose or eye socket. Both of which are easy to do damage too if you land a good punch and would meet the requirements.
Also, sounds like the other two involved will be arrested too, so I bet the police are trying to clarify the story. Wonder if there are any cameras on that parking lot.
It's made the headlines section of espn.com =/
Bad press is good press???
Let's look at the positives here, if we get into a fight (ala Miami-FIU) then Holmes is extremely valuable.
+ one million
BREAKING: Andrea Adelson of the ESPN.com ACC blog has just written a post about Michael Holmes' arrest. However, upon further review, it has been determined that she used exactly what was written in an AP article. So in conclusion, the ESPN ACC bloggers still don't give a shit about VT and the rest of the ACC, unless it is something about FSU, Clemson, or SuckstobeU University, and they will continue to claim that linking a story to one of Bitter's articles is sufficient work for the blog and its readers.
#goespn
#Bitter4ACCBlogger
+1 for that, BUT, I would much rather ESPN keep their slimy hands off Bitter. I like how he reports without bias and offer perspective since he came from the SEC.
I want to keep him for ourselves.
I agree with that! ESPN would just take him and ruin the good work that he does now!
I don't think a bias towards FSU would look good on Bitter...#Bitter4Heisman
Ooh, someone run that by him! #Bitter4Heisman! I like that!
