OT: Beer for the game

I'm having a barbecue for the game on Monday, and I'm a homebrewer, so these are the two beers I'll have on tap. It's a double IPA, pseudo Heady Topper clone, and a single-hop Mosaic red. I didn't actually do this intentionally, but I noticed the DIPA was kind of orange in color yesterday, so here ya go:

Nice! Great colors. How hoppy (bitter) is that red?

I also have a pair of homebrews ready for this weekend. I have dubbed them Hokie Hefeweizen (standard German style) and Interception IPA (two-hearted clone). No red/maroon/ruby beer, but hey this is an Orange Effect game right??.

Thanks! The red is bittered like a pale ale, but we late-hopped and dry-hopped it a bunch, so it has great aroma. We achieved the color by just adding a small amount of chocolate malt, so it doesn't have a super malty flavor, which allows the hops to sit firmly front and center.

I'm not a huge Hefe fan myself, but I'll take an Interception IPA or three.

I like almost any style of beer, with one notable exception being IPAs. Can't stand the overpowering hoppyness even a little bit. But that Hefeweizen - that's my jam! Any German beer really, but particularly my good old Weissbier. I often joke that Germany is my beer Mecca, and I always face the east when I drink one. Damn, I think I may have to go have one now. One of the many advantages of working from home! Cheers!!!

I like almost any style of beer, with one notable exception being fruity beers. Can't stand them. German beer is good. Belgian beers are pretty legit too.

OK, two notable exceptions. Thanks for reminding me. "Don't fruit my beer!" (Man Law)

I'll be partaking in the nectar of the gods: Coors Light.

When I'm not drinking one of those, I will have bourbon, a rail, fireball, or all of the above entering my face on gameday.

I know this is going to come off as completely beer snobbish, but I'm not 100% sure Coors Light can even be classified as a beer. I'll certainly drink one if offered, and will take one every single day over an IPA, but just sayin'. Please don't hate me for pointing out the obvious... /s

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

This is not a banquet, it's a tailgate.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Actually, Coors heavy is the Banquet Beer. But point taken and I agree.

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

I've been known to partake in a banquet beer from time to time.

Good 'ol Yellow bellys! LOVE em!!

BTW Cinci Hokie, you're not the only TKPer to not like Bourbon. Also not my thing. I often tell people that most folks barely like me sober. You don't want to be around me on liquor...

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

Good to know! I'm terrible at handling my liquor so I'll sit next to you on the beer train.

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

Silver Bullet was my jam in college...and it's still my go-to for cheap beer when I'm gettin' together with friends and drinking cheap beers profusely. I'm not beer-snobby enough to really care that much though. I'll drink most beers as long as they're not fruity

Onward and upward

Oh, I definitely have a favorite "cheap" beer. It's called PBR, and I love it. Drank a smooth 12-pack of them before the Van Halen concert last Saturday at the Lube. As a matter of fact, I think I'll have one of those after I finish my hefeweizen.

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

classic choice sir! I can always get behind some Pabst

Onward and upward

PBR is like a walk-on who ends up becoming a starter. Cheap and easy to get but a lot better than natty or busch

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

PBR just leaves the worst aftertaste in my mouth. Its like i've been chewing on aluminum foil for 3 hours

You're killing me Smalls!

Those look good! What hops did you put in the Headytopper clone?
I'm bringing 2 little kegs of homebrew for tailgating this weekend: one is a Weihenstephan Vitus (pale weizenbock) clone that turned out pretty well and the other is a citrus hopped sour saison with Rakau and Nelson Sauvin hops. I figured I'd go with citrus hops since it's the orange effect game. The saison doesn't taste sour yet since I made it a month ago, but that was when I kegged it over a week ago.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

A shorter list would be what hops didn't we put in...

But seriously, we bittered with Magnum (recipe called for hop extract, but we couldn't get any in time), and then a mix of Columbus, Apollo, Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe at 10 minutes, whirlpool, and dry hop. All in all, we put in over a pound of hops for a 5-gallon batch.

That saison sounds amazing! I'm totally loving the New Zealand hops. It may take a while to sour, especially at keg temp, but I think it is probably great as-is.

That sounds excellent! What a great mix of hops! I made a Pliny the Elder clone a couple of times and I think that calls for about 17.5 oz of hops for 5 gallons. It's crazy how green the beer looks after the boil. Your Red sounds really enjoyable too.
I've made citrus hopped saisons before - it's my spring game beer now. Normally I use Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade, and Citra. The sour component is just going to take patience. I bottled the rest of the batch (since I only kegged 3 gallons), so I'll be sampling periodically.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Seeing recipes for some of these big DIPAs really puts things in perspective. For comparison, Hokie Hefeweizen has 0.5oz of hops for 5 gallons, and Interception IPA has 5oz of Centennial (1.0@60, 1.0@30, 1.5@5, 1.5@secondary)

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

That's the great thing about weissbier - they're so much cheaper to make than IPAs. I'm still going to keep making IPAs (Red IPA is in the fermenter), but weissbier is the way to go for a party or tailgate.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

I just made 10 gallons of a kolsch, which is right on par with the weissbeers in terms of hoppage. And the grain bill was almost entirely pilsner malt, which I bought in a 25 kg sack. so this 10 gallons of beer cost me about $25.

I've been wanting to do a Pliny clone, havent gotten around to it yet. Did Northern Brewer's 115th Dream Hopbursted DIPA last year...was DELICIOUS. Had a pound of hops in it...added in a little bit at a time every 5 minutes or so

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

If you're looking for a clone of one of the best IPAs in the world, here is the official clone of Pliny the Elder. This beer is killer, but you need to drink it within a couple weeks of bottling before the hop flavors fade. I made this twice. My parents entered it into a competition (which I thought was cheap since it wasn't my recipe) and it won the Imperial IPA category despite being only 7.5% (I got poor mash efficiency).

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

I will be indulging in some Schlafly Kolsch.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I'll be enjoying the classic Carolina Pale Ale from Carolina Brewing Company

Nicely done, my brew pot will be put back in action (hopefully) this weekend with a new IPA recipe.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I applaud your efforts, but I think Orange Effect has to end at my amber beer.

Some things you can't compromise on.

Speaking of Heady Topper.....I have ONE left of my 4-pack that imported across state borders. I'll be bringing it down for the tailgate since it is meant to be consumed straight from the can.

What beer would you trade for a fresh Heady Topper?

(Assuming we don't run into each other, this is a hypothetical asking what beer you would offer as a fair trade)

Get well!

Lee Suggs!!

IF I could make it, I'd trade a 120minute for one. Or a Bourbon County from Goose Island.

No offense, but I wouldn't trade anything for one. Not my thing hoppy beers...

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

This is a tough one. My first thought was Westvleteren 12, but this Belgian beer is more difficult to get in the US. I'd probably trade a Founders KBS for it right now. I have 6 of them, so that's a done deal. I'd also trade a Russian River (Pliny, Consecration, Supplication, you name it) if I had a couple. I'd consider trading a CBS if I had one of those, too.

how old is your westy. fresh it's good 2+ yrs, it's amazing.

I live about an hour away from Santa Rosa CA, so I would definitely offer a bottle of Pliny the Elder for Heady Topper. I've been meaning to get on some beer trading websites to do that, and just never have.

EDIT: realized I should mention that this was a hypothetical answer, as I won't be at the game, unfortunately.

Good responses! Bourbon County or a Pliny sound like a deal! I haven't had either, so probably a good trade. Or maybe that Westvleteren 12β€”that sounds interesting. Oh and XHurler, that's a fair comment as Hops are not the end all be all for beer flavors in my mind either. Plenty of good flavors and situations for sours, belgian trippels, session beers, and whisky of course :)

We'll have to arrange a tailgate trade at another game.

Get well!

Lee Suggs!!

Roger that, and sounds good!

Mmmm, Belgian Trippel...

"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!"

Sadly I don't have any Westvleteren 12 - my parents brought a few bottles back from Belgium and I got to try it once. It's nearly impossible to get it in the US.

I brewed 10 gallons of a NorthWest APA with an experimental hop I was introduced to in Portland, OR last April, now called Jaryllo.

~6 ABV, 40 IBU full bodied ale. Second shot at it, it was very good the first batch.
Not sure if it's done, I'll be checking tomorrow morning to see if it'll be ready.

I added some malts designed to tip it towards the orange side. I'll see if it did enough or of it's too yellow.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

This DIPA, I thought was super yellow, but the thicker the glass it's poured into, the more orange it gets, so if you think yours is too yellow, just pour it into a fat tulip or a snifter.

Since this is an Orange Effect, I may have to see if I can find a Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat (not quite orange, but close enough). They had it on tap at BW3 last time I was in the 'Burg and it was delicious.

How about a Hoegaarden or Franziskaner with an orange slice garnish?

Excellent.
For a traditional German breakfast do the Hoegaarden, sausage and a fat soft pretzel.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Isn't Hoegaarden Belgian? Or do Germans drink it anyway?

Augustiner unfiltered pils.... Heaven

I'm brewing a brown ale this weekend for later this season. But with limited supplies in Spain, I found a Virginia beer (Full Nelson Virginia Ale) for the game.

I believe we'll be doing a keg of Flying Mouse #8 for this one.

For that matter I'd recommend anyone coming down this weekend that doesn't already have beer plans to bring a growler (or buy one on location) and have it filled at one of the many local breweries around Roanoke. Go grab a flight at any given place and I'd be willing to bet you'll find one you'd love to enjoy at your tailgate.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Now there's a suggestion I can get behind.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Gotta ask how it turned out? I'm trying to learn the whole brewing process this season.

Also in other news are we breaking out that whole omens thing again? If so I saw two turkeys on my drive north yesterday. If that doesn't scream good omens I don't know what does

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Bought my tailgate beers yesterday. 15 pack of Founders All Day IPA, with some DC Brau Penn Quarter Porter, Devil's Backbone Trail Angel Weiss, and (to commemorate Blacksburg and because it's freakin' delicious) Sunken City Red Clay IPA. And a case of Yunegling in case I need to sober up. Tried to get a variety of styles, al in cans, all sessionable, and a light-ish dark beer for Monday morning tailgate breakfast.

Cans ftw! I am loving this can push in the craft industry. The one local to where I work isn't even considering bottles. And is actually moving from the grenade (32 oz growler) in glass to the crowler (the 32oz aluminum can that's filled and sealed at the bar.)

@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

I love it too. I'm to the point where I'm scared of buying IPAs in a bottle unless I know it's fresh, just too many stale beers that sit in the light for months on end. Plus for a tailgate, got to pack in as many beers as possible.
How are the crowlers? Bunch of places near me (Richmond) are starting to use them but I haven't tried yet. Are they reusable?

Growlers are absolutely reusable. I'd recommend the ones with a rubber seal on top to keep carbonation a little longer:

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Oh yeah, I have way too many of those. Was talking about Crowlers, which serve the same purpose, but as a can.

Sorry, I just thought that was a typo.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

I think the whole point of the crowler is that it's disposable. Think the guys around here are charging like $.50 to $1 per, but the beer is still fresh. And you don't have to find someplace to store it, or buy another glass growler because you ran across a place and the 8 that you own are at home/not in the car.

@VTnerf on insta, @BuryHokie on twitter, #ThanksFrank

That's pretty nice then. One of the biggest reasons I rarely buy growlers is that I never have one on me, and don't want to put down the extra money for something I have a dozen of at home.

i have a billion, leaving one at the tkp tailgate, cause i need to dump them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I drink Coors Light because I'm a god damn cowboy.

Rip his freaking head off!

Got 6 Schofferhofer Grapefruit for Saturday, Monday will be Anderson Valley Summer Solstice.

In between on Sunday will be as many Lite Beers by Miller as possible in support of my man Brad Keselowski trying to take the Blue Deuce to victory at Darlington.

You have IPA on tap and have to ask that question?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Leg for any homebrewer! I say you want a more orange beer go for a Pumpkin ale next year! I love me some pumpkin beer!

for the tkp tailgate, so far i am bringing:
22oz oconnor heavy footer ipa
64oz growler of smartmouth fresh hop i-64 ipa
750 ml of council beatitude tart saison passion fruit

Anyone ever try the Erie Brewing Co. Rail Bender Ale? It's sooo damn good refreshing taste low IBU and great with cigars. I just wish it wasn't soo strong at 6.7%. It is ridiculously good though. I'll bring some down to drop off at the TKP tailgate.
