I'm a little confused about this. It seems like anOSU has access to the tennis courts and is controlling access to them. Is this a normal practice?

I'm fairly certain this is a common practice. I know the William and Mary game last year had the same set up. They were under a tent on the tennis court. It's a nice thing for visitors. They have a home base for the day.
I guess I've never noticed..I've always tailgated in the Litton Reaves lot and walked to the Stadium approaching from the West so I never pass by the tennis courts.
I remember Nebraska setting up shop there when they came to visit.
I walk past those courts every game day, and it seems to always be a hot spot for visiting fans... It may be because that's where all the buses drop off? I've never seen an official tailgate before. Seems kinda uppity to me, with the limited access. I feel like it would be an interesting hang out for Hokie and Buckeye fans.
The alumni association typically sponsors a tailgate before many, especially big, games with food, etc. and sells tickets to the event. In Columbus a number of clubs and alumni associations sponsor tailgates. Some charge or ask for donations for the food but let anyone in; others are by invitation only.
I'm glad that they are "roping this off." I know many of us on both sides would get along just fine, but it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to tailgating for a game as big as this. There will be plenty of smaller OSU tailgates in the trenches, I'm sure.
And for anyone who is beside an OSU tailgate, treat with them respect. Share some alcoholic beverages and food, talk about their tailgating traditions, and play a game of cornhole with them (you don't have to let them win though).
They really did treat us with respect up there last year and while I know all of Hokie Nation probably will do the same, just remember that fact when you are about 10 deep in a twelve pack and you keep having to hear O-H-I-O.
If nothing else, think of it as good karma for the game!
The nice part about anOSU fans is that they know all the letters to their school name. Clemson on the other hand always gets stuck on the "O" (that's what she said) when they're singing their fight song.
I really wish VT had some sort of tradition like that. anOSU fans use it to greet each other anywhere, I yell Go Hokies at some guy wearing a VT shirt and I might get a Go Hokies back.
While it may look cool and may be neat to see it once in a while, it can be very obnoxious as an outsider. I'd rather walk around and say "hello" than hear "Roll Tide" "Roll Tide" or "O-H" "I-O" everywhere I go.
FSU has an obnoxiously long spelling bee. F- L- O- R- I- D- A, S- T- A- T- E, Florida State, Florida State, Florida State, wooooo! Sugar Bowl in '99 implanted that gem into my brain just as much as that obnoxious war chant.
I will speak to anyone wearing Hokiewear, but my first question is usually along the lines of "Hey, are you a Hokie or are you just wearing the hat/tshirt/etc. The most usual answer is their kids/grandchildren go there. I do have good luck with folks who have a gigantic VT magnet affixed to the tailgate of their pickup truck, though.
What does that mean?
Associated with the University? Did you go there? Do you follow Tech sports? Are you a fan? Do you consider yourself a Hokie? Wanna talk Hokie sports? Funny, nobody seems confused when I ask.
You can amuse yourself and everyone else around you by responding loudly with "It's rolling, baby, it's rolling!" the next time you hear a "Roll Tide!".
I agree it can be tiresome, even as a bucks fan. Be walking thru dallas airport with ky block O hat sometime in May and some hungover dudebro yells OH at me from terminal 12.

I hear that all the time when traveling to an away or neutral site game. Heck, I was on vacation out west last month, walking down the street in a VT shirt, when someone leaned out his car window at a stop light and shouted "LET'S GO!" at me.
Down in SC I see people wearing Hokie gear all the time and I wear mine almost every day, I'm lucky to get a nod and smile when I say Go Hokies most times.
Wear it around Cincinnati and I will chase you around a Lowe's just to get a "Go Hokies" in. Met a nice Hokie in his 50s that way.
While working in Cbus I was wearing my VT hat and some ahole got into the elevator with me my partner and our patient and said "I don't have to worry about you shooting up the place do I" I never wanted to hit someone so badly. If I hadn't been wearing my depts uniform I probably would have.

I'm sorry to hear that. I guess some a-holes think it's funny; but I knew someone, the engineering prof who went to OSU, killed that day and probably would not have been as restrained. I was real glad when OSU played tribute to VT afterwards.

I went to the FSU vs UVA game last year (my GF is a nole) and I wore a hokie shirt and noles were yelling H-O-K-I-E-S!! at me haha. only 2 (but different groups) but it got me pretty pumped! and then the game started..... also went to the FSU vs BC game. the same day we lost to WF. it was raining the whole time and just a miserable day.
At the 2007 game against FSU, there were two Nole fans sitting behind us. Absolutely among the coolest visiting fans ever. By the end of that game (a great night for us), they were heckling Bowden as much as we were. Traded some stories, shook hands, and departed as friends.
Sadly, I'm usually the guy who isn't paying attention and just naturally chuckles a little. Unless I'm in Blacksburg, it's generally something I'm not expecting to hear.
However, it's still a great conversation starter. I've met plenty of good Hokies over such a greeting!
It's a fine line between fun and obnoxious. A spoken "O-H" in line for security at the airport is good-natured, but some go so over the top it can be embarrassing.
I enjoy walking along somewhere out of state in a piece of OSU gear and having someone walking by throw out a casual O _ H. I try to reply in like tone & volume with an I - O!
To a lesser extent I have tried the "Lets Go.." and let them reply "Hokkkies"
Every time my fianc yells "O-H-!" in public I yell back
"K.I.E.S, Hokies!!!" before anybody can spell the rest. It'd be a little more obnoxious to a stranger, though.

It's normal for the home school to provide an area for the opposing fans. Went to the Marshall at ODU game a last year and the Big Green club had a buffet meet and greet in one of the large meeting rooms in the student center.
Edit: Just remembered that Maryland "rented out" Cole Field House to the OSU alumni association last year for their game. At least we aren't renting out Cassell to them!
Not that I care that much, but just enough to respond. Why the downvote? Just stating what other another school did for visiting teams, neither of them VT. One of the anOSU as a visiting team.

I've never seen (noticed) an opposing team's fans doing this, but I know it's not uncommon for the Washington street tennis courts to be rented out for tailgating.
Hopefully when all their fans are having fun at the tailgate, someone locks the gate to the courts and keeps them trapped until after the game
I feel like they should also lock in all the suspended players with them, just so they can get a nice life lesson from the angry fans they're locked in there with.

I think OSU is going to have a much bigger fan base representation in Lane Stadium than a lot of us VT fans are acknowledging. My prediction is '09 Nebraska fan section X2 (at least). OSU is going to travel really well.
The game is a lot closer to Columbus than I thought (i'm dumb with geography fyi.)
I assumed that it was a 9 or 10 hour drive for some reason. I guess it's only 5. A lot of my friends are driving up Monday.

Yeah, it's not a bad drive at all. Nice little drive on 23 and 35 south out of Columbus, hit the WV turnpike in Charleston and take 460 the rest of the way into Blacksburg near Princeton, WV. Only about a 5-5.5 hr drive. The only places you really encounter any significant traffic are around Charleston and a little near Beckley.
I enjoy the fact that every Buckeye car traveling from Ohio will be forced to pay $12 rountrip to the state of West Virginia, though.
You have Hokies driving from up there, too buddy. But $12 is a deal for driving the WV turnpike in a sports car.

Right, and that's my hope. But I seriously wonder how many of those season tickets were bought up by Buckeye fans. Like everyone has been saying in the ticket exchange thread, the single game ticket price practically warrants buying season tickets.

Fair weather fan buy hats, not season tickets for one game. we also happen to have the largest alumni association in the country.
I'm guessing it'll be pretty similar to the Nebraska game a few years back, which looked like 10-12k to me. Between the visitor allotment, secondary market (probably mostly OSU folks buying those), and the OSU folks that bought season tickets with plans to sell off the remaining games, I think they'll be well-represented.
Don't forget that their band (229 members plus staff) will probably take up ~250 seats or so.
Fun fact that I didn't know until now is that their band is only brass and percussion. Also, they have a smaller band than ours.
VT gives opposing bands sect 101. I don't see anOSU getting 250 in. I think band seats are in your seat allotment.....

With new company taking over this year and this being their first game providing security etc, I would say VERY.
If you're wearing an OSU shirt and show up with a student ticket, you will probably not get through. And as HokieFireman said below, it's a new company this year so I expect them to be meticulous for the first game and even more so since it's such a big game. They have to make a good impression on the athletics department right away.
Thanks for the advice. I'll spread the word to my friends, but it it happens to me I'll be pretty ticked off. I'm a student, I got my ticket legitimately, and I can root for whoever I want. Maybe I'll bring some HokieSpa printout or something to help my case.
Just bring your student ID and you'll be fine.
If you have friends that are not students with student tickets I would advise them to not even try to enter. Public safety (law enforcement and security) have been upped for the game. They are not going to take arguing over entrance to the game lightly.
Bitter's guess is maybe 10%. Don't know what he bases this on, but Andy's usually money.
So that's about 6,000 or so.... Much less than people guessing around 10K aOSU fans
Travel? Not too much of that going on. They will be coming out of the woodworks as well. Not much travelling for a sour fan of any other nearby school not called VT.

We generally travel well. This was the stadium at Cal a few years ago. And I KNOW this would never be the case at Lane Stadium, because you guys care about your team as much as we do. Nonetheless, we do travel well.
I hope we bar UNC from having an official tailgate anywhere on campus.
We basically asked them for the same before the game last year and they practically laughed us off the phone. Hope we return the favor.
We don't have to hold a grudge. We could just station them on the academic side of campus so they can see what classrooms actually look like.
After dealing with UNC personally about this, the grudge is very much deserved.
that school literally goes out of their way to make it overly difficult for VT fans to have a good time around town on GameDays. Their restrictions for our game are far more strict than any of their others, save maybe the NC State game.
But do they restrict buying tickets to the game and being loud in the stadium?
They would if they could find a way to do so. I had one of the worst game experiences of my life last time I went down to UNC for a game. I stood and sung along when they played the National Anthem as part of the pre-kick ceremonies. The group behind says "oh great, we have to deal with an annoying Hokie again." I let that slide and I cheered as I normally would during the game. At halftime one of the police officers pulls me over to the side and gave me a "warning" because there had been formal complaints for "cheering too loud." I wasn't full blown Lane Stadium losing my mind cheering either. I knew I was a visitor and felt I handled my self very appropriately.
My distaste for UNC is stronger than it is for loluva. Those clowns are stuck so far up their own ass that they stick their nose up to the playing of the National Anthem. Pathetic.
Actually, they do for both. They're hyper sensitive toward visiting fans cheering on their team, and will have security all over you for doing so. They also try to restrict tickets as much as they feasibly can to avoid any possibility of a visiting fan getting some. They rarely open up single game ticket for this one (which they will have others opened up all season) and will tie our game into every single season ticket mini plan they can to avoid any possibility of them hitting the public.
And don't even get me started on the harassment the campus police and CHPD will do towards visiting fans who decide to tailgate. UNC is a dry campus, and if you're not in baby blue, they'll make sure you know it.

I was there for the first VT visit after joining ACC and I think there were more of us than them. Imoh ran for 240+ and we kicked their a$$es. Afterward, people in town were asking why we were all there. We just kept saying, "welcome to the ACC"
It's reflected by their fans. I had an older UNC fan threaten to SPIT on one of my rank members when I was there with the MVs several years ago. Her reason for such a threat? We were where their band was supposed to be before the game (we were there waiting for their band to join us so we could rehearse for a joint military appreciation halftime show).
Also had them trying to trip some of our members as we were marching towards the stadium. UNC has by far the worst fans I've ever experienced.

My father-in-law told me about a friend of his visiting VT for a UNC football game. Said he was cursed at and spit on for no reason in the bathroom. Everyone has stupid a-hole fans, some more than others. Let's take it with a grain of salt, salt goes good on almost everything.
It's mostly a # of occurrences issues. On a separate trip to UNC they booed the MVs as we took the field. I'm talking the majority of the stadium.
I've experienced bad Bama fans on game day, as well as Tennessee, UVA, even VT fans (witnessed anyways), but UNC is on another level.
I know how the HT's deal with tripping assholes. Countermarch after passing them so we run em down while they're bragging to their buddies!

The Alumni clubs close to away games will do the same. Last year the VT alumni club set up on OSU's campus and had a lunch/dinner and drinks reception. The cheerleaders and the Hokie Bird came by and they raffled off some signed gear to raise money for the chapters. I still packed a fifth into the event as they were charging bar prices, but my agenda might have been a little different than most.
Seems reasonable. A way for the school to bring in some revenue and a spot for visiting fans to tailgate in peace, not that I would expect them to have any trouble in general.
I am sure there will be a good representation for OSU in the stadium. All the more reason for the fans to get loud and stay loud. I shed a tear last year when I could hear "Lets Go Hokies!" coming through my surround sound at THE SHOE on primetime!!
My times at UNC have been similar, and opposite. I've met some relaxed and cool ones. And have had security on me repeatedly....
that doesn't sound strange at all...when i visited our game against Duke, Virginia Tech had a massive tent right next to the stadium that was sponsored by the Triangle-area alums. they sold tickets to Hokies as an alternative to setting up their own tailgates and had an endless supply of food and drinks. it was a needed break from hauling tailgating gear and gave me a chance to meet Hokies from NC
I like it. I've always enjoyed opposing fans coming to Lane, and being welcomed with a beer and good natured jab. I like that they get a good spot to hang out and experience things close to the stadium. I like to think of it as our southernnorthernhospitality; southern enough to be overly polite, but northern enough not to go too ape s... over college football.
The VT chapter in Baton Rougue threw a good one for the LSU game at their indoor track facility. Also, had some good BBQ at the away game at Clemson in 07. Overall, not a bad idea to look into VT sponsored tailgates at away stadiums if you don't plan on driving to those games or don't have the luxury to pack an extensive tailgate of your own. Good food, good fans.
Western Michigan had the tennis courts last year as well.

I can't remember if they had an official tailgate, but I DO remember LSU RVs in the commuter lot for a WEEK before that game. They were nice folks, though...on game day, I was joking with a guy as we walked by about how we were going to kick their ass (he was doing the same. Turns out I was right) and he DEMANDED I do shots with him. Not that I needed a lot of convincing, mind. But LSU and Nebraska fans have by far been the nicest groups I've been around. Couldn't make it to the A&M hurricane game, heard they were great as well.
