Hokies Discuss Quarterback Position Heading into Furman Game

Virginia Tech lost its starting quarterback for up to 8 weeks when Michael Brewer broke his collarbone in the third quarter against Ohio State. And while a portion of Hokie Nation is desperate to see Dwayne Lawson or Chris Durkin get their shot as QB1, offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler made it clear Wednesday evening that there is no quarterback controversy in Blacksburg.

"This is where we're at with the whole thing. Brenden Motley is our starting quarterback," Loeffler emphasized.

After Motley, the depth chart is murkier. The Hokies have two talented dual threat options, but neither have taken a single collegiate snap. Redshirt freshman Chris Durkin may have a slight experience edge over true freshman Dwayne Lawson, but Lawson, a highly touted 4-star recruit from the class of 2015, has drawn rave reviews throughout preseason camp. Wide receivers coach Zohn Burden joined the fun this evening, clearly enamored with the potential of the Tampa, Florida product.

"He's got a long arm, a strong arm," Burden said of Lawson. "Very accurate. He's got some attributes that some other guys don't have. He's athletic, he can run. He runs like a wide receiver, so he's special, special talent. Just got to come along mentally."

On Tuesday, head coach Frank Beamer said he never really was considering redshirting Lawson.

"He had a couple packages going and we talked about him playing some even in the Ohio State game, but we were concerned that it might be a little too much too soon," Beamer said. "The other side of those is those guys that have it and I think he has it; you can't put them on a big enough stage. No stage is too big. Michael Vick was that way, Tyrod Taylor, Bryan Randall was that way and I could go on and on with those guys we've had here. We'll see, it'll be an interesting week to see how he handles things, but the other two, Motley too how he handles things. I just saw Motley and Durkin walking down the hall. They're in a different situation this week than they've ever been in. Someone's got a chance to be the guy. It's just a different deal."

Loeffler, however, is keeping the depth chart behind Brenden Motley close to the vest.

"We are not going to disclose anything about the No. 2 position. Not at all," said Loeffler. "We've got a really good plan with the whole deal, but that plan can change daily. That's just where we're at right now and that's the way we're going to keep it."

While Motley struggled to move the football consistently against No. 1 Ohio State in the second half, Loeffler says the entire program remains confident in the redshirt junior's abilities.

"We're in good shape right now," said Loeffler. "(Brenden) Motley has put in the time. He's a guy that it's really important to. We've got a bunch of good character guys that are going to rally around him. It is what it is. Like I said, we were excited about Michael (Brewer) and I thought he played his best football...but the fact of the matter is that we've got a No. 2 guy that we're very, very confident in and his teammates are confident in him. So we've got a shot."

Speaking after the Hokies loss to Ohio State, Loeffler commented that he was hesitant to fully utilize Motley's running abilities due to the possibility of another injury at the quarterback position. But as the Hokies enter into Week 2, that concern has vanished.

"Oh yeah, now you can't do that," said Loeffler. "Really (we) were careful when the game got out of hand at the end, but we've got to win football games. Regardless of what it takes to win a game, regardless of what we have to do, we're going to do it to give ourselves a chance."

In 2013, after the Hokies fell to UCLA in the Sun Bowl, Loeffler was somewhat critical of how he had prepared his backup quarterbacks for game action. Likely not expecting a quarterback the size of Logan Thomas to get knocked out of a game, Loeffler felt he hadn't properly equipped Mark Leal with the tools to succeed. But now in his third year presiding over the offense in Blacksburg, Loeffler expects everyone in his quarterback room to be ready for live action.

"Well you've just got more time," said of the difference between 2013 and now. "When you walked in the door, you were trying to implement a whole new offense. You were trying to teach your staff the terminology. I was trying to figure things out. And trying to get a draft-pick quarterback (Logan Thomas) ready and make him better. Now things are in stone. We know who we are. We know what we want to be. Do we have to adjust a little bit now? Yes, of course...but it is what it is. We're fine. (Brenden) Motley is going to be just fine."

But Loeffler doesn't just expect Motley to come in and manage the offense. He expects him to lead.

"He's been around a while. He's been around 4 years," Loeffler said of Motley. "It's not like you're walking in a freshman or a redshirt freshman that's playing. Whenever you're an older guy that's been around the block, that's seen Logan Thomases of the world come through here, watch Michael, I think you're the leader. You've got to be the leader. You're a fourth year guy and that's what we expect out him."

While Motley said his preparation remains the same regardless of where he sits on the depth chart, he did concede that he expects improved timing after practicing with the first-team for a week.

"It's always good," said Motley of getting No. 1 reps. "You get timing down, based on the game plan whatever it is that week, you get timing down with the receivers. Communication is always key with the offensive lineman and also with the running backs. It is good getting those (No.) 1 reps."

With Motley's first career start inching closer each day, his focus has shifted from the disappointment of Monday night to the opportunity that awaits on Saturday.

"Yesterday we watched the film. We learned from it. What we did wrong, what we did right. And you've got to move on," said Motley. "You can't stick on that Monday night game. Yeah, it was a tough one, but we got a sour taste in our mouth right now and we're ready to move on and get it out."

ON FURMAN AND THE HOKIES PREPARATION FOR THIS WEEKEND:

"Think they're a good football team. Predominately an over-under front team, they're a 4 down front team. They play disciplined football. Think they're well-coached. I think we'll go out there and I think we'll play really, really hard and we're going to rally around our new guy (Brenden Motley). We've got a bad taste in our mouth. The fact of the matter is that we were in a good situation at halftime, and we didn't finish it in the second half. Regardless if that was the No. 1 team in America or not, we don't take losses very easily around here. Those guys right now, they've practiced their tails off. Their preparation reminds me exactly like it was last week, which is a great sign. Most of the time whenever you come off playing the No. 1 team in America and you're getting ready to go play another opponent, you don't prep that same way. These kids, they're prepping the way they're supposed to prep whenever you're a winning team."

ON WHAT WENT WRONG IN THE FIRST QUARTER AGAINST OHIO STATE:

"I think the first couple drives of the game. We started out really slow. We made some mistakes early in the game that we didn't in the second quarter...On the first third down, they ran a bear front, they scraped the mike, and that was just a good call. They caught us in the right protection. But we had a few others earlier that we could have made the blocks and had a completion...A couple times we had some missed assignments in the run game early. We started really slow and then started getting going and ended up having a really good second quarter in my opinion. That's what we wanted to see in the first quarter. We just couldn't get anything going. We had some really good deceptive ideas and some good play-action passes that we wanted to use in the first quarter, but we could never get to because we were behind the sticks and just couldn't get it going. Those first two drives, we wanted to be more aggressive but really couldn't get in the aggressive mode. And then we started getting things going in the second (quarter). We started moving the ball a little bit. Mixed in some tempo and started to hit some play-action passes and the throwback. That's what we wanted to do in the first quarter. The first two drives were disappointing."

ON YOSUAH NIJMAN GETTING EARLY PLAYING TIME:

"We said that we were going to play (Yosuah) Nijman early regardless. It wasn't a decision based on who was playing well. It was we were going to get him some experience."

ON CAM PHILLIPS/ISAIAH FORD PLAYING LARGE NUMBER OF SNAPS:

"We said in this game, we were going to play our very, very best players. Play them every snap. That's what we did. We're very confident in our backups, but the fact of the matter is, we were playing a secondary that probably has 2 or 3 NFL guys, a linebacking corps that has 3 NFL guys and probably two defensive lineman that are going to play in the NFL."

ON RUN GAME AGAINST OHIO STATE:

"Heck, you're playing a team that averaged 140 yards rushing (against). If you take out the sacks, and again, I know that all factors in, we rushed for almost 170 some yards if you take out the sacks. Did we want to run the ball better? We always want to run the ball better. We run for 200 yards around here and we'll want to run the ball better because that's a very important part of our program. The fact of the matter is we did some good things, we did some bad things. Was it perfect? No. But there was some really positive things, too."

Brenden Motley

ON MICHAEL BREWER'S INJURY:

"It was really unfortunate. We all feel for Mike (Brewer). He's a great guy. Hard-worker, very hard-worker. Like I said, it was unfortunate what happened to him but you have to move on. Hopefully we'll see him towards the end of the season. "

ON PREPARATION DIFFERING BETWEEN NO. 1 AND NO. 2:

"If you're a No. 1 or a No. 2, if the No. 1 is out there getting reps, the No. 2 should be right behind him getting the same mental reps, taking the drops, taking footwork. Doing exactly what the No. 1 is doing."

ON TEAM LEADERS:

"There's multiple leaders on the team. There's not one leader, the quarterbacks not always the leader. We have plenty of seniors out there. Some guys like Sam Rogers, Ryan Malleck, all of the offensive line. There's multiple leaders on offense and multiple leaders on defense."

Augie Conte

ON MICHAEL BREWER AND MOVING FORWARD WITH BRENDEN MOTLEY:

"Obviously losing (Michael) Brewer is a hit to the team but we're going to rally around (Brenden) Motley. Everybody's fully confident in his abilities and his ability to step up as a quarterback and a leader. We're going to work as hard as we did, with or without (Michael) Brewer. Obviously I'm going to miss him, but he'll be back."

ON HOW THE O-LINE PLAYED AGAINST OHIO STATE:

"I definitely think we're taking steps in the right direction. We still have a lot more to learn. The run game was good, but it can get better. I think we definitely learned a lot from playing Ohio State. You always learn a lot going from your first game to your second game, just because you have real game action."

ON YOSUAH NIJMAN'S FIRST GAME COMING AGAINST OHIO STATE:

"It's a heck of an introduction. It's trial by fire, playing your first game against the No. 1 team in the country. But he played well. He's definitely got some stuff to learn, but he definitely stepped up in a big-time game."

ON IMPRESSIONS OF OHIO STATE:

"They were big, they were physical, they were everything you'd expect from a No. 1 team in the country, defending national champions. I definitely think we hung in there with them. We had a couple breakdowns there in the second half, but we definitely learned a lot from it. They were a good team and I think they'll do well this year."

Comments

Nice write up. Although a lot of us are eager to see Lawson play, I for one don't think he should automatically start. Since they say they weren't going to red-shirt him anyways everyone wants to see what he has. I hope we can end up like OSU last year. Barrett looked pretty lost in his start against us last year. 7 sacks and 3 picks. I'm not sure OSU fans were not calling for Jones to start after that but who knows, they ended up with a pretty good season. I just hope we rally around Motely as a fan base as the team is doing. Until he routinely looks poor on the field and Lawson or Durkin isn't playing then we can talk about who should play more. But if Motely comes out as a world beater in these next couple of games there's not reason to call for him to not play.

I'm ready for the Furman preview and foe-rensics. Is it Saturday yet??

Of course Lawson shouldn't start. This game should be Motley's to show what he can do, Lawson and Durkin given plays after we get up big( assuming we do).

I like that plan - actually focus on getting up big. One it might help with any hangover, plus you get experience for your #2 guys assuming you're rotating them in more, and it helps keep your #1's healthy.

My main concern with Motley is his throwing ability (didn't throw much in High School) and the consistent 'deer in the headlights' look displayed when he comes into games. Hopefully he will be able to settle himself down moving forward.

Harsh but I don't think he's wrong...

I cant hate what he said. He's right. No reason why a RS junior backup QB should look so inexperienced and have that deer in the headlights look in his face, even if its against the number 1 team. It boils down to recruiting (or the lack thereof) and coaching. Sure I think Sean would be immature to say something like that if he was a freshman (RS or not) or a true sophomore, but not a RS Junior, Recruiting at the QB position has gotten so much better, so I don't think we will run into this problem again in the future.

edit: I am not directly blaming this on Motley, more of the situation we put ourselves in

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Another example of an arrogant, overbearing, blowhard, talking head who knows nothing about Motley or the VT football program. I am not sure whether or not Motley is the answer at QB, but few backups with next to no experience thrown in against the unanimous number one would have done better. Remember after the Wake game when everyone was calling for Brewer's scalp and were clamoring for Motley? Give Brendon a chance before we Hokie fans or the so called "experts" in the national media render premature judgments.

Assuming we get a comfortable lead going into the 2nd half and Motley has done well I would expect to see doses of Durkin and Lawson late in the game to get some real snaps under their belts to determine how things are going. Of course they might decide to keep Motley in to get as many snaps as possible. Not an enviable positions the coaches are in...

If the surgery goes perfect and in 6 weeks brewer is good to go. Do we jump him back up to #1 if we have a clear qb decided by then?

I think a healthy Brewer slots right back in at #1 in every situation except Lawson or Durkin becoming a Top 5 ACC quarterback. Even if Motley plays well, I think we go with Brewer.

I wouldn't have a problem with him coming back in and starting. Although, I also wouldn't have a problem with Motley, Durkin, or Lawson coming in and tearing it up and playing out the rest of the season.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

The decision will be if the "clear QB" while Brewer is out is still the "best QB" when Brewer is back. Hard to know. Playing a guy to keep his ego satisfied is wrong. Playing a guy who the coaches believe will give you the best chance to win is right.

"Exit light..."

I've been thinking about this concept for a little bit now and I have started to adopt a different perspective. I've heard it a number of times from a number of places, GuitarMan, so this isn't directed at you specifically, but you gave me a phrase I've been waiting for. The phrase was, "best chance to win"... maybe I'm nitpicking.

I'm not in the boat that we should always play that guy.

Taken literally, if a guy gives you 99% chance to win, it's better than a guy who gives you a 98% chance to win. At some point, I think the best-chance-to-win is a minimization-of-risk-strategy, where the introduction of risk forces us to win or suffer a loss. Introducing a little risk to challenge our guys...isn't a bad thing. [Note: The best coach at challenging his players like this? Les Miles.]

But there are points where a few percent chance of loss doesn't really matter. The 99%/98% scenario is an extreme example, but I think we should challenge our guys more than we do, and I think it pays off.

I think it depends a lot on how Motley, Durkin, or Lawson is playing when Brewer is available again. If we are really struggling on offense and barely getting by, I think it's a no-brainer that Brewer takes over again. However, if the new guy is really excelling and we're winning ACC games, I think it's hard to take the hot hand out of the game. There's undoubtedly also going to be rust for Brewer to shake off, and if we are on a roll and in a position to clinch the division, I have a hard time seeing us going back unless we absolutely need to. I feel really bad for Brewer, but we absolutely need to figure out who our guy of the future is right now and get him as prepared as possible. I hope Brewer's recovery is as seamless and quick as possible, but we should prepare for the possibility that we've seen him take his last snap in Blacksburg. We're going to really see what Loeffler is made of as a QB coach these next few weeks.

I think it depends on how Motley (Or the others) is doing. If he is winning us games and is effective to the level that Brewer would be, then Motley would probably be our guy. If the coaches think Brewer would be an improvement, he will play. I imagine Brewer will come back as the starter because I don't think any of the other QBs have near the understanding of the offense that Brewer has right now. I do hope the Brewer takes on a role of a second QB coach and spends a lot of time helping Motley but also Lawson and Durkin with understanding the offense inside and out.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Does Brewer have a medical redshirt opportunity? I know he was hurt at TT. If he's out 8 more weeks and only has 2 games left, plus a bowl (yes, I'm going there), would it be worth it to play if he has another year?

no he has to have 2 years of injury issues to even be considered for a 6th year.

taysom hill-> broke his leg Freshmen year and then tore his knee and ankle his jr year.. he was granted a 6th year.

Doesn't the injury and redshirt at TT count?

don't believe he RS'd due to that injury. He RS'd because he was a freshmen.

Bingo...

For example Syracuse QB will seek a 6th year after--> missing the last seven games of 2014 with a broken calf bone in his left leg, healso suffered a tear in his right Achilles in his 1st series this past Friday..

I like the fact that Coach Loeffler is publicly stating his confidence in Motley. It's a huge relief as a player to know your coach believes in you to get the job done.

It seems that all of the coaches are in agreement with Lawson: great arm, special speed, but needs more reps & time in the film room to correct mental errors. Looking forward to seeing who emerges at the top in the upcoming weeks.

Go Hokies

That second part is where Brewer could be a big help to Leoffler. He can be another coach for these young guys now.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Agree to a certain extent. Loeffler isn't going to come out and say, "Welp, it's Motley's turn so we're basically screwed." As a coach I dont think you have much of a choice but to back the guy whether he truly does or not.

Right, that was the point that I was trying to make. It's also good for Motley to hear the bode of confidence from his coach. Some players respond better knowing that they are the starter and don't have to be scared of making a mistake.

Go Hokies

I'm cautiously optimistic about Motley. He has never been in the position to have to be the leader, never started a stretch of games and doesn't take a ton #1 reps in practice. He does have some abilities, now we get to see him hone in his skills over the next three weeks (against opponents we should beat). The schedule is working in our favor right now for having had one of the worst possible scenarios happen.

I also hope that people continue to be patient with Lefty as he is now working with his third starting QB in as many years on the staff. Tough task.

God Hokies!

Is coronavirus over yet?

I think Leoffler had gained some fans in the first half of the OSU game. He had a great gameplan going and by all accounts was going to show off some more stuff in the second half until we got derailed. While he needs to develop Motley quickly, I think a stronger running game this year could be huge for helping him in the play calling department.

Our WRs will need to be able to beat man coverage in the next 6 weeks though and help Motley out by getting open.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Personally as far as Loeffler goes, I was thoroughly impressed with his play calling against OSU and the progress Brewer showed since last season. Calling for his job or wanting to replace him in any fashion is the furthest thing from my mind and I think he is just what we need as an offensive coordinator.

I would have liked to have seen what Loeffler could have done with Brewer at the helm, but it just didn't work out that way.

So Loeffler's going to get a more difficult job this season.

silver lining: we get a chance to really evaluate Lefty by what he does with the rest of the season. Loeffler apologists could say he lost is QB if things go downhill and that might be a valid excuse, but I, for one, am hopeful that things will go pretty well in Brewer's absence and we can stop the discussions about dumping Lefty (until CFB retires).

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I think Lefty did a good job and deserves credit for having our offense ready to go. I hope one of our three remaining QB's can step up and become a leader for this team. I really don't care which one it is! All three are unproven and may the best man win. I know a lot of people are calling for Lawson and he may be the next great QB but until I see it on the field I will not rush to make him our #1 QB. If I remember correctly Lefty said Durkin made huge strides this year coming out of camp and I wonder if he will get a real shot. No matter I am still really excited to see what this team can do the rest of the year. I think we held our own against the #1 team in the country and we should be in every game the rest of the year. On a side note I noticed that our play makers looked slow when compared to OSU. There was no down field threats on offense? Remember this is coming from a novelist/arm chair guy.

I am a big Pittsburgh Pirates fan. We have a young right fielder named Polanco. Early in the season, he was really struggling at the plate. The manager sat him down and asked if he was worried about being sent back to AAA. He said he was and was pressing. The manager told him to quit worrying he was staying with the big club and they would work out his problems in Pittsburgh. With that pressure off, he settled down and starting batting 300 and getting key hits. Loefler is trying to do the same with Motley; Motley needs to be confident he is the QB. Motley needs to be able to concentrate on playing the game and not be looking over his shoulder to see who is gaining on him to start. If Loefler cannot make that commitment to Motley; then he might as well start preparing Durkin or Lawson as QB1.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

I liked that Burden said Lawson was "accurate." That was my biggest concern. From the limited clips I've seen from Lawson, he looks immensely talented....big arm, great size, smooth mobility....but raw as hell. His motion looks long and it's hard to say how accurate he is from the clips we see. If he's accurate, you can really limit his package to the MV7 "One-Read-And-Go" offense and be effective.

This is Motley's job until Lawson takes it from him. Now, I didn't think Lawson would leap him if Brewer was still healthy, but now that we're in this situation, we need the best guy on the field at all times. Right now, that's Motley. With the extra practice he'll receive over the next few weeks, would not be surprised if Lawson becomes the better option by the end of the year.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

No...it's Motley's job UNLESS Lawson (or Durkin) takes it from him.

man, I was looking at the Saturday forecast and I got a clinch in my colon for a couple of moments. After getting back from DC for the Boise game, my son came up from the 757 to see his first Hokie game.I got us a couple of those cheap Hokie ponchos and we sat in the the double misery of getting soaked thru and thru and losing to JMU. Today after seeing 80% chance of thunderstorms for Saturday afternoon, that same feeling arose for a few secs. Will it be the same this year? I hope not, seeing as Furman is not JMU but....... what will hard rain make us do on offense and does that suit Motley better than if it were dry?

BroncsZoo

When it rains, footing is more treacherous in general...our field is superbly designed however so that won't be an issue. It also makes the football slick, and smaller guys have problems handling it. We'll run it, and run it with big guys...Shai, Motley, and Rodgers should all have 60 yards rushing if we're doing things intelligently...I would go higher, but I expect we'll try to get reps to other guys in our one FCS game...

I wouldn't be surprised to see Motley in there longer than expected if we are able to get a good lead. I am sure Leoffler wants him to get all the reps he can at this point.

I will say this...I'm glad we have 3 more non-conference games before we start league play. Hopefully, Motley will show up in the starting role. If not, we have these 3 games to work out the kinks and get Lawson or Durkin some game experience before Pitt. If there ever is a good place to be in your schedule when your QB1 goes down, this is certainly it.

If you play it, they will win.

Hell, give me 4 years of Logan and David Wilson with Leoffler.

I don't want to burn Lawson's redshirt at all this year. We do have a great defense this year with (I believe) 9 starters returning and we have more experience on the O-line. Brewer is out 4-6 weeks which means he's back for the Pitt, NC State, or Miami game. I don't think Motley is horrible he came in to play the #1 team down a bunch and put together a score near the end. Burning Lawson's redshirt, to me, is a repeat of 2007 against LSU with Tyrod. I see that as a waste of an entire year to learn the system and I'm looking much further into the future. To me this season was shakey and with Furman, Purdue, and ECU as the 3 teams we play next I truly believe Motley can handle it until Brewer starts to heal up.

Cracks me up seeing all the love for Loeffler. I've liked him from the start and never understood all the calls for sacking him, considering what he was working with.

We had a chance against OSU. I was hoping for the best and Lefty and our staff had us in a position to win the game. Then the one thing that couldn't happen, did.

If things don't turn out the way we all want them to, I hope everyone will remember that up until Brewer's injury, we were within 4 points of the national champion and unanimous no. 1 team in the nation. Someone deserves some credit for getting us there.

Seriously. He was calling a great game when Brewer got hurt, and I was pretty excited to see what he was going to do in the second half. There's no question the talent level on that side of the ball has risen considerably since he took over and overall the offense is in a much better place, even if the numbers the past two years don't reflect that. I still fully believe that barring further significant injuries, we'll see some legit improvement this year.

Cracks me up too.

Now I do think he tends to get a little too cute at times with his play calling, but I generally think he's played a poor hand about as well as he could. I think we got a taste of what a Loeffler offense can look like when it has some decent (but not even great) weapons to work with...and against a very good defense.

I dont know why people are talking about Motely, Lawson, or Durkin. I have some video of Sam Rogers taking snaps at QB in practice today.

A new season...new hope
