If you didn't catch it on Saturday, Hokies' backer Tremaine Edmunds played a little tight end in Virginia Tech's romp of Furman. In the interest of transparency, I didn't catch it at first. All the credit goes to French. He dropped me a message at 2:29 AM Sunday morning, "Are my eyes playing tricks on me—was that Tremaine Edmunds in as a blocking TE on the Trey Edmunds TD?". Yes, while you were tucked in snug underneath a bourbon blanket, French was re-watching the Furman game.
The play in question is somewhat interesting too.
Tech lines up unbalanced, which in the past is something Loeffler has done on the goal line. To the right of center Eric Gallo (No. 64) is Augie Conte and then Ryan Malleck. To Gallo's left are Wyatt Teller, Jonathan McLaughlin, Yosuah Nijman and Kalvin Cline. Tremaine motions from left to right across the formation.
Tech is actually outflanked at the point of attack, but it doesn't matter. The Hokies run a basic power play. The front side blocks down, the back side guard (Teller) pulls front side and blocks the first man in an opposite colored jersey, the back side linemen cut off back side pursuit, fullback Sam Rogers kicks out the end man and Trey Edmunds runs virtually untouched for an easy six.
And because I am obligated to highlight such things, Teller pancakes a dude.

No better way to start your day than with some pancakes....

Part of this balanced, nutritious, and complete breakfast.
Didn't you read the article? Joe said it was unbalanced to the left /s
I DIDN'T COME HERE TO PLAY SCHOOL.
Magwood didn't have the money.....

is it not a penalty to shove your hands in another player's helmet like that? if wyatt isn't careful, he could do what the mountain did to the viper.
Was thinking that myself -- hands to the face penalty?
Yeah. Illegal use of the hands or hands to the face. That's a paddlin.
I feel like that is something you don't see in the run game as much. Most of the time I see that called is in pass protection. It also probably hard for a 6'5" OL to keep his hands low on a LB
Illegal laying of hands. That's a paladin.
In looking at the video, it appears that Wyatt leads with his right shoulder and forearm to Magwoods chest, then as Magwood is bent backwards, Wyatt's forearm, then the hand slide up the chest to the chin, bottom of facemask area. Looks legal to me.
Sounds good to me. I'll allow it!
Edit: If you watch the video, it's obvious that the angle of the photo makes it look way worse. Wyatt's hand never got up into Magwood's facemask. It just appears that way from that angle at that point in time.
I am pretty sure in one photo you can see his fingers of his glove on the facemask. They might not of stayed there but they were definitely there
Wyatt got away with illegal hands to the face there. Stacy will need to talk to him about that.
need to see it from start to finish. they won't usually call it unless you initiate there. in that picture you can't tell if he already has the guy being driven to the ground and as he's falling there is really no where else for his hands/forearm to go.
Somebody fill me in, why would you run the play to that side? You've got a 6-to-5 advantage on the left side and a 4-6 disadvantage to the right.
Aye, it is interesting to see us run that to the weak side. Maybe most of the time the defense shifts to the strong side?
Well, really you have 5 to the left or 4 to the right if you consider that your center can go either direction. 6 and 5 if you consider the same for the fullback. Then you pull the guard and that swaps the strength. The pulling guard likely gives some momentum for the push but also I imagine throws the defense's gap responsibilities off too. So then you have 3 players going for one gap, 2 of which are blockers with momentum behind them to clear the way.
Because now future teams watching game film have to be prepared to defend run to either side. Tendency is a bad thing.
That's why criticism of individual playcalling is useless. If this play doesn't work (in an actual game that matters), we have the OC's head on a platter. But if he's working on establishing balance and reducing tendencies, the long-con if you will, then its worth it. Playcalling is an art, and like most art, it's the holistic composition that matters not the individual execution. You have to be able to execute, Pollack had to know how to splash paint artfully, but any micro dissection will diminish the composition.
This is why if you're objectively criticizing individual play calls, you're usually focusing on third/fourth downs and even then looking at them in aggregate. This is exactly why stats about conversion percentages are so indicative of success.
One side is serving pancakes, the other were TEs going to run corner if there was an audible or something at the line.?
Teller looks like a bear mauling a small child.
One of Elisha's she-bears, if you will.
Someone get Magwood a smoke.
How bout a bong and a blintz?
A pipe and a crepe?
Shigar and a waffle?
agh....then there is no pleasing you...
The fact that those movies aren't on Netflix is nothing short of criminal.
I have absolutely no idea what movie that is from.
Casablanca
I was just legging this entire subthread until you went all combo breaker on me...
I'm glad that second video is there because I've been wondering about the Edmondses jerseys since I saw Trey's nameplate saying "Tre Edmonds." It looks like Tremaine has "Trem," on his, and so I would assume Terrell suits up as "Ter"? I can't think of seeing shirts like this before for us.
Kyle was Ky. Fuller for a couple years I believe, both when Corey was there and when Kendall came in.
correct. usually you don't have to go 3 letters though.
Trey should have "TD Edmonds" Tremaine should have "TFL Edmonds" and Terrell should have "INT Edmonds."
The real solution to keep 2 letters each is Fe, Tr. and Te. Edmunds. That's what I expected them to do.
While Kenny Edmonds' jersey says "Babyface" because all he does is make hits...
Just rolling with the mispell of Edmunds...had to...
Now this is an idea. Someone write an open letter.
waiting for the "HE HATE ME" jersey suggestion...
and Trey runs right behind Tremaine's block
This reminds me of an old play when Rickey Bustle/Billy Hite were around and it carried over to Stinespring when Bustle left for ULL. There was a "z-back" set as it was told to me.
There would be a normal I-formation and then an additional fullback or tight end (usually a Doug Easlick or Jarred Mazzetta type) would go in motion to either side and almost always the play would be a hand off to the additional blockers side. It was highly effective. But probably having Lee Suggs made it highly effective too.
Stinespring ran some variations off of it faking a hand off and throwing to a tight end or swinging a pass to the main fullback who snuck out to the weak side.
Regardless, that's some pretty blocking and TD. Walk in TD's from the 1 are a thing of beauty
