OT: Annoying video ads preventing page scrolling

Hey Joe (or whoever else may be working with the technical parts of the site these days), I've been having issues with ads on various pages, where a Flash video starts playing and the page scrolls up to where the top of the video lines up with the top of the page, and resets the scrolling to that point every second or so until either I click "pause" on the ad (which never actually pauses the video itself but sometimes fixes the scrolling issue) or the video comes to a stop.

Here are two screenshots I took of the video. The first image was for a Trulia ad, and I didn't catch what the second one was for.

I'm running Chrome on Windows 10, without any browser addons or anything.

Joe doesn't have say over the ads. Google does.

I'm fairly sure that you still have some level of control over the content of the ads, though it may just be a blacklist of specific things. If nothing else, if they got some info it may be possible to submit some sort of request to Google, or maybe tell us how to do so.

I disabled video ads months ago. From time to time they sneak in.

Been having the same problem.

Yeah whoever came up with the idea for ads to do what they are doing needs to be castrated. What goes through a persons mind when they come up with an idea like that?? Some men seriously just want to watch the world burn

You can solve it easily by disabling flash in your browser. However, you would need to enable flash again for other websites. But lets be honest, who here uses the internet for anything besides TKP?

He's no good to me dead.

what's this internet thing of which you speak? I've got a TKP browser that also has an email function and a nifty GIF searching app called "The Google"

Basically every thread, I'd get the same damn Hillary Duff Pandora ad doing that. If anything, the advertising just makes me want to never use Pandora again.

Google "Adblock" and download the chrome extension (add-on).

It removes the ads on this website and even removes the commercials that espn makes you watch for every single video on their website. Honestly, the best thing for blocking ads.

There was a time, about a few years ago, that Joe implored us not to use AdBlock for TKP because the ad revenue was that beneficial, especially since he doesn't charge us membership.

That said, I have had the exact same issue with the autoscrolling on my work computer, so I've had to enable AdBlock on TKP there. I don't have any issues on my home computers with AdBlock disabled.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Didn't realize that AdBlock had an impact on ad revenue. I assumed that the ads didn't know whether a user was blocking them or not. If that is in fact the case, then I'll gladly remove AdBlock for this site and deal with the ads.

Adblock searches the page source downloaded from the site and prevents the browser from even making the connection to the ad server to retrieve the content, so Google has no idea that the page you're on was supposed to download an ad in the first place, therefore eliminating ad revenue for any hits that you otherwise would have provided.

I have used AdBlock in the past, whitelisting certain sites, but most of the places I go anymore are whitelisted anyway so I haven't bothered this time around with an OS installation.

And damn, just while typing this response I was pulled down the page by an Iams dog food ad. This is really frustrating.

Any similar fix for Firefox users? Aside from switching to Chrome, that is.

Adblock has released a browser extension for Firefox as well, but like has been discussed using it causes the sites you visit to lose ad revenue.

I've said it before, and it's a super hacky fix, but...If you're at all familiar with html, you can right-click/inspect element and delete the surrounding div tag. Poof, no more ad.

I realize this could be done, but the way you put it it's something you'd have to do every time it happens, and is probably more work than just clicking the pause button.

I also realize that I could create a script to use with Tampermonkey and just repeatedly add items to that, but that's in effect what AdBlock is supposed to do, and I'd like to not resort to that if I can get away with it.

Can't (and won't) deny it.

EDIT: if this seems out of place, it's because it was supposed to be a response to this

"Hello, my name is hokie07ME and I have a TKPing problem."

So how does Capt JLP fit into all this?

You do have to do it everytime, although I don't always see a pause button, so in those instances it's nice and at this point takes me no more than 5 seconds (I feel like I've gotten way to good at it).

And if you made a script that did what adblocker was supposed to do, you could block the ad AND revel in the knowledge that you went out of your way to create a solution to an insignificant problem that many others have solved before. That's why we got into this programming game, right?

It's a persistent issue. I have reached out many times to Google and will do so again. If you want to block them, go for it, but think about supporting TKP in another way because it will seriously hurt our bottom line: http://www.thekeyplay.com/support. This website ceases to exist without revenue.

I have supported in the past, though it was probably two years ago which means I'm due for another. I'm aware of the revenue issue with AdBlock, which is why I am trying to get by without it.

Thanks for looking into it again, Joe!

I just disable Flash and the problem went away.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Also affects latest IE browser.

I use an ipad, iPhone and both firefox and Internet explorer on a laptop and have never had an issue.

I laugh because I posted a similar complaint a few weeks ago, and was told then that it was a bit of a sore topic on here. I feel your pain. But I also understand the need for revenue. For that, I will be contributing, but I have to get past October (Sorry Joe, but the bills have to get paid first.)

PS - I'm very proud of my (old) self. This was my 1st GIF!
