Stinespring Discusses Durkin Getting Reps at Tight End

One of the more buzzworthy storylines over the past week was the news that QB Chris Durkin has been taking reps at tight end.

After speaking with tight ends coach Bryan Stinespring, one gets the sense that a permanent move to the position is not out of the question.

"He's a really good athlete and he catches the ball exceptionally well," Stinespring said about the 6'4" 222-pounder. "I like his toughness when he runs the ball; I'm excited about him."

Stinespring remarked the Ohio native was equally ecstatic about getting reps at the position because he's so eager to get on the field any way possible.

What makes the move relatively seamless is that Durkin already knows all the TE formations since he's had to master Tech's offense from a quarterback standpoint.

"I tell him to line up at right slot or whatever it may be and I don't have to teach that to him," Stinespring explained. "I don't have to teach him what the routes are because as a quarterback he knows what everybody has."

While many have questioned whether or not Durkin has the pass-catching ability to master the TE position, Stinespring left little doubt about his hands.

"He catches the ball as well as anybody we have at the spot and we have some really good, talented guys that can catch the ball. He catches the ball as easily as anybody we have."

Additional Tidbits from Stinespring

  • One reason why TE Bucky Hodges has yet to light up the stat sheet through the first three weeks of play may be due to the fact that he wasn't fully healthy until last week's game against Purdue.
  • According to Stinespring, Hodges had been dealing with a hamstring injury, a deep quad bruise and a shoulder injury over the past few weeks and didn't feel 100 percent until last week.
  • In discussing Hodges, Stinespring was very complimentary about his work ethic, adding the two talk frequently about the training habits of NFL players like Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson.
  • Speaking of the NFL, Stinespring believes TE Ryan Malleck projects well at the next level because of his well-rounded ability to block defensive ends, run multiple routes (seams, corner routes) and play on special teams (covering on punts). He also noted that Malleck's willingness to do whatever a play is called for to help the team is an added bonus for the next level.

Foster breaks down ECU's offense

Despite ECU bringing along a new offensive coordinator and working in a brand-new quarterback, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster doesn't believe the Pirates' offense has changed compared to 2014.

"The quarterback (Blake Kemp) is completing 70 percent of the passes and they've got dynamic skill guys," Foster stated. "They're not missing a whole lot from where they've been."

Foster had high praise for Kemp, pointing out that he and ECU's quarterback from 2014, Shane Carden, have nearly an identical skill set on tape.

"As far as accuracy, throwing the ball with quick releases and knowing where he's going with the ball, they're very, very similar."

With the Pirates featuring such a pass-heavy offensive attack, Foster has placed an added on the defensive line to disrupt passing lanes.

"Whether it be tipping the ball or altering the quarterback's trajectory, we're working hard on that. If they're doing a lot of quick game and we can get our hands on the ball, that'd be great."

Additional tidbits from Foster

  • DT Corey Marshall has a "strained arch" on his foot that is still tender.
  • With Marshall getting treatment, Foster said that backup DT Woody Baron worked mostly with the first team this week.
  • Regarding Baron, Foster believes his emergence and instant success is because he's "fundamentally sound" and "plays square."
  • Foster said he expects ECU to run some option, even though they haven't shown it yet on film with Kemp as their QB.
  • One player for ECU that really stood out on film was 6'6", 258-pound tight end Bryce Williams because of the matchup issues he presents.

Player Quotes

DE Ken Ekanem

ON IF HE'S FRUSTRATED BY NOT HAVING ANY SACKS AFTER THREE GAMES:

"Yeah, I've been getting kind of frustrated lately, but I know in time we'll (him and fellow end Dadi Nicolas) each get one. Hopefully, it'll be this game. In every obvious passing down, we'll be putting our head down and try to make our best moves to the quarterback. Unfortunately, sometimes we can't finish the play. Sometimes, (quarterbacks) slide off our tackles. I know it happened a couple times during Ohio State."

ON IF HE'S SATISFIED WITH AT LEAST GENERATING PRESSURE ON QBS:

"Yeah, I mean it's just about getting back into the flow of things. I mean, I was kind of hesitant with my left shoulder using a lot of power moves and stuff. But now, I'm gaining a lot more confidence in it. I'm going to use my power moves as one of my main moves in this upcoming game."

ON IF HE'S NOTICED MORE OPPONENTS CUT BLOCKING THIS SEASON:

"Uh, yeah. Ohio State tightened down their splits, which limited our penetration, and Furman was just cut blocking. That's the most I've ever been cut. I mean, Purdue kind of played us straight up. (Opponents) mix it up each week so we don't know what we're going to get. They never show stuff on film until you see it in the game."

ON WHAT HE'S SEEN FROM ECU'S OFFENSIVE LINE ON FILM:

"I mean, they're a bunch of big guys, definitely their tackles. One is 6'7" and another is 6' 9". I mean, they don't move really well, but they cover a lot of ground just because of their length. They're just big bodies, so we just got to be good and fundamentally sound and hopefully get around them pretty quickly."

DT Luther Maddy

ON IF THERE'S BEEN AN ADDED EMPHASIS ON TRYING TO GET HANDS UP INTO PASSING LANES AGAINST ECU:

"We've done that. Not just for ECU, but we've been doing that all season. Coach (Bud) Foster emphasizes that if you don't get to the quarterback, you should get your hands up. But, we've been doing that all season, not really just for ECU. But it's something we'll probably do more so at ECU just because they throw the ball a little bit quicker."

ON IF PLAYING A TEAM LIKE ECU ALLOWS FOR MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO GENERATE SACKS:

"Yeah, as a matter of fact I was telling Ken (Ekanem) that this might be the game we finally get our first sacks just because they throw the ball so much. We'll be in a lot of situations to rush the passer. They throw the ball pretty quick, so our back end having good coverage could lead us to having sacks and us getting pressure can lead them (secondary) to having picks. It's just playing together and playing hard and I think the sacks will come together."

ON WHAT HE'S SEEN FROM DT WOODY BARON:

"Yeah, Woody's looked really good. Like I said in the past, me and Corey (Marshall) being out in the spring and Woody (Baron) and Nigel (Williams) getting all those reps really helped those guys. They got a lot of experience and are more comfortable in their stances. He's (Baron) not thinking as much and is getting off the ball. I really like the way he plays."

Durkin at TE could be exciting. What's up with Kalvin Cline this season? Haven't seen much of him...I'd been hoping for a lot more TE involvement in our passing game, so hopefully with Hodges at 100% and Durkin coming into the picture, we'll get something interesting going.

Cline was a little banged up, but he seemed like he was back and playing well against Furman. Not sure if he wasn't playing or just wasn't targeted against Purdue.

I saw him yawning a lot on the sideline at the Purdue game. I am not taking a shot but I got the impression he just isn't into it mentally at this point. He did get on the field for a couple of plays late.

By that do you mean he's bored with football, tired of not getting reps, or thought Purdue was too easy? Do you think the coaches are off the Bandwagon by Kalvin Cline?

Maybe he has uncontrollable yawning hiccups.

Just sayin, I've yawned on the field as an official before. Sometimes it's just been a long day/week. He's currently the #3 TE and depending on practice performance and game plans, we may or may not see more of him as the season goes on. I will say that whenever I've seen him on the field, he hasn't looked bad.

Isn't he juggling football with the Corps commitments?

No doubt the kid is busy. I agree with all of the possible reasons. I don't get to go many games where I am in row 13 behind the Tech Sideline. So, I was fascinated just watching all of the interaction between coaches and players and players themselves. It was one game, that he got very limited mop up duty. Disenchanted is the word that comes to mind. One game. I believe he cares because he looked pissed off when they change a formation and he had to come off of the field. I don't think he sees much time this year unless due to injuries.

From what I've heard, cadets usually have to get up around 5:30am. I doubt he is able to fit in a nap on game day.

Athletes in the Corps work on different schedules. I believe I read that he was enrolling in Army ROTC and they do have morning PT but for athletes their dedicated to a sport and ROTC second, Corps third. It is a busy schedule but he wouldn't be required to go to every event as he is already working out more then them. I will say he is probably not seeing too much action as Malleck is tearin it up, Bucky is trying to get some big plays, which leaves some scraps for Kline. Only one person can get the ball per down. Don't forget we have like 4 RB's, 3 TE's, 2 WR's, and 1 new QB (really wanted to say a partridge in a pear tree but too soon for xmas jokes)

Only one person can get the ball per down.

Sam can always get the ball on every down, in addition to the first person. He just chooses to bring himself down to the rules of mortals.

Not to mention we've seen downs where three people get the ball on a given down, and one of them gets it twice.

Yeah I noticed that Cline wasn't in much. But with Bucky and Malleck, Cline is clearly 3rd string, so I wouldn't expect him to get tons of reps.

But Malleck is gone after this year. Bucky, Cline, and Durkin could be a killer combination next year, with Cam and Isaiah out wide, Rogers and McMillian in the backfield. Lots of pass catching options there.

We will have Xavier Burke in the mix at TE too. Likely more as a blocking guy but I would expect Leoffler to slip him out to break tendencies and nab a few TDs over the next few years.

not to mention possibly getting Jovani Haskins.. his top 5 are VT, Rutgers, WVU and BC

if that's his top 5, then I'd worry about him qualifying even he commits.

Would like to see Durkin get the ball on a sweep...the guy is a load. But it might not be a "jet sweep".

daveinop, inventor of the "truck sweep."

Why not just a draw? Get him running downhill?

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

That would work...but I'm thinking that he's one of those guys that gets to the edge, makes no discernable moves, and when the play is over there are bodies scattered everywhere and he's got a really ugly 8 yards. Opposing players see him in motion and think, "not this shit again!".

I do like "truck sweep", "dozer sweep", "trainwreck sweep", etc. maybe "duckpin sweep"

The Durkinator.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Durkin is most definitely not someone I want carrying the ball east-west. He needs to get going downhill. He could be a weapon on inverted veer runs, but Lawson seems to be getting all the non-Motley snaps.

I can't help but envision a 4 TE / 1 RB set...even more frightening for opposing defenses...then again, I haven't really seen any 3TE sets yet, and that's got me fairly irritated...I understand Ford is almost so good we can't keep him off the field, but we ALL know he needs a couple more plays off to stay well rested...
Imagine the heavy set of the Oline, Motley, Malleck, Hodges, Cline, Durkin and McMillian in the redzone...motion this guy, motion that guy, we have diagnosed the coverage, audible to the best play, snap and score...I mean what could the D possibly know about what's going to be ran....

If we'd run a 3TB set with Ford last year, the D would know there was a bubble screen coming.

TB? theres no reason our O can't feature rodgers Edmunds and JC in a set as well. but I like the sheer versatility of 2 TEs to the short side, a TE in slot and Ford out wide for 3TE sets, run crossing routes and bring Ford through the back on sweep motion, the QB reads the coverage as Ford gets into the tackle-box, and either gives it, if the DBs want to stay home, or tosses a first down on one of the crosses that almost certainly got open through that mess...not frightening enough? Make Rogers the motion guy, or Durkin, or swap Durkin and Hodges, regardless, the sweep guy can throw too, imagine a throwback to Motley on sweep motion with crossing routes, the guy(s) coming to his side just slow and back into the DBs after the throw...wide side with no-one near him, and the only possible angle coming from the safety, who just had to read "crossing routes-sweep-counter throw..oh s***."

Hmm so Coach Newsome does have a TKP account! I always wondered. Only kidding :)

Alright, I've never played football in my life, so bear with me. Can somebody explain exactly why our defensive ends are having trouble generating sacks thus far?

I know Dadi Nicolas had opportunities against Cardale Jones and Austin Appleby, but just couldn't wrap them up and take them to the ground.

Dadi should have at least 3 or 4 more sacks than he has. But he keeps whiffing on QBs that he has a clear shot of destroying.
