I like many of you have my fair share of game day traditions. Tailgating setup protocol, grilling items, favorite bourbon, pre game show/keyplay forum prep, lucky shirt, jersey and hat.
I am now starting to think that we are jinxing ourselves bad.
Before OSU: #DBU was on the lips of everyone and we got blasted.
Off Season: Sacksburg shirts are created and we have been in a drought lately regarding sacks.
Brewer: "its going to take more than that to take me out"... no need to say any more.
Superstition is getting out of hand in my life.
GO HOKIES!!!

We actually lead the country in Pass Defense - Opponent Completion Percentage.
CFB STATS - VT still DBU
We are going to give up a back-breaking play every once and a while, but overall, opposing offenses will struggle to move the ball against our D.
On a more relevant note, I've tried eliminating some of the superstitions. It is so hard to maintain them for every game, because there is bound to be a game that I can't attend/watch at some point in the season. My only superstition now is to read TKP religiously, which I can do from anywhere.
We've also been in the Top 3 in that statistic for five of the last six years, and we were #6 in the only exception during that time frame.
Sadly, we still lag behind quite a bit in YPA and YPG. That's pretty typical, though.
Believing the hype about oneself might be worse than superstition. Bringing a kickass attitude however things may be might be better. But, whatever you do, do not go outside. You might step on a crack and break your mother's back.
That only matters if you're on a sidewalk, right?
Does anybody remember the blackout shirt from the VT v Boise game? I now only wear mine when doing physical labor around the house. My only solace is getting to sweat out the previous night's bourbon onto the Boise State lettering. I will never buy another VT v (any other school name) shirt.
Thats why i won't buy one of the Enter Sandman black shirts.
2 minutes left. We have the ball and the lead.

What could go wrong? :/
There's only one superstition worth having in my barn. Maroon VT headband, turned so the embroidered VT symbol is resting slightly to the front of my right temple.
The rest bring negative voodoo.
Do you always and only wash it after a loss? Also does it possess Lebron magic in that if you take it off when we are losing you become more powerful for a comeback?
I wash it occasionally. Magic wears off after a while of being dirty.
When we're losing the only problem is that the VT isn't over the temple. I adjust it and it's good to go.
It appears to me you've been wearing it wrong for a few years now.
Maybe this goes in reverse? We talk about how bad our QB depth is and then our back-up starts tearing it up.
Motley is already breaking records I think. Something like 200 passing yards and 2 td's thrown in consecutive games for the first time under Beamer...?
That's hard to believe given some of the games MV7 had....among other possibilities (Drunk, T-Mobile, MV5, LT3, Randall (who had some monster games))
200 yards + 2 TDs in the first two games that the QB has started, not just any two games.
That seems like kindof an arbitrary stat then.
Would you prefer that he's leading the ACC in total touchdowns (7) or adjusted YPA (9.5) while being 9th in total pass attempts and only throwing a single INT?
No matter what statistic you go by, Motley is doing very, very well. Doesn't hurt that Travon also leads the conference in YPA on the ground.
It may just be me, but I've always had an interest in statistics in sports and I had never heard of "Adjusted Yards per Pass Attempt".
Via Pro Football Reference:
Adjusted Net Yards per Pass Attempt = (Passing Yards - Sack Yards + (20 * Passing TD) - (45 * Interceptions)) / (Passes Attempted + Times Sacked)
How in the world does someone come up with the formula for that metric? And how do I get that job?
Ok, now that makes more sense.
edit: repeat of the comment above me
typed it in, than forget to hit "post for a few minutes"
I have the same black hat with the Hokie bird design on it that I have worn since I was in Middle school. If I wear another hat is seems that we either play aweful or lose so I always try to wear it on gamedays. Now along the way I have had to replace it a few times (due to it being mowed over, dog ate it, lost in a drunken state) but it is the only hat I will wear during Hokie games and it is a pain in the ass to find when I do have to buy a new one.
I bet it has a unique aroma.
yea it's called #WINNING
I'm trying to see if there's any personal trends this season.
I went to the OSU game, only caught parts of Furman on my phone, and saw all of Purdue at home.
I wore the Orange Effect shirt in the first game, no Tech gear in the second game (but I think I had a white shirt on), and the new white shirt in the third game.
My buddy was with me for OSU and Purdue, and he wore the same Orange Effect shirt for both -- so I don't think that shirt in general is cursed.
So, if I'm at the game, we're 0-1. If I'm not at the game, we're 2-0. I'm not planning on going to any more games this year (except maybe UVA, although I'm waiting for them to lose a couple more to see if the ticket prices start to plummet).
I missed the first half of the Purdue game due to a work going-away party. I returned home just after halftime and we blew up in the second half. You're welcome, Hokie Nation.
I also watched the entirety of the first two games from the same spot, so go figure.
Last year, I wore the orange effect shirt during the OSU game and the actual Orange Effect game. I have since retired it on game days.
I wore a maroon shirt on Saturday. So I think I might just have to wear white shirts during the rest of the VT games this year.
Well, so far this season we're undefeated against opponents who had a "Foe-rensics" article written about them, and winless against teams who didn't.

What about those awesome "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED shirts. The rest of the season seemed to be mission unaccomplished!
Game 1: 2 of the most elite QBs in the country...not surprised or that disappointed we didn't get any sacks. Plus, we embarrassed them last year with sacks, so they game-planned the crap out of stopping our D-line and executed it very well.
Game 2: as far as I remember, while Furman's QB wasn't "mobile", he was a speedy little guy and we still got 3 sacks on him (just none by Dadi or Ken).
Game 3: Appleby reminded me a bit of Roethlisberger in his elusiveness for a big guy. Dadi should have had him at least one time that I can remember, but Dadi went at him too wildly and Appleby was able to step forward out of his grasp. But we still got 2 sacks on him.
Overall, I think because our LB corps isn't quite as talented as before Bud isn't pressing the gaps as hard as he used to, which helped overwhelm the O-linemen, which made it easier for our ends to get around and collapse on the QB. My not-so-good memory is that nearly every time our DE get around the tackles, there are pretty big holes for the QB to escape through up the middle. Hopefully with more experience and practice the box will get stuffed more (giggity) and our D-linemen will go on a feeding frenzy again.
Disclaimer: I'm no football guru, so my thoughts/comments above may be way off!
Not a superstition, but an interesting tidbit...Outside of the bowl game against Rutgers, my buddy has not seen a Tech victory on his own TV in a long time.
There's no correlation here, because it's not like every other game that he's seen elsewhere has been a W.
Games that I remember watching at his place over the last few years include the 2011 ACCCG, Pitt 2012, 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl, Duke 2013, Pitt 2014.
So, I think there's a particular shirt that I'm not going to wear anymore
We lost when I wore it against Ohio state, ecu...
And I happened to be wearing it the day after the ecu game (don't judge me) ..and my Dallas cowboys ALSO gave up a 14 point lead to lose last weekend.
I'll never wear that shirt on game day again...
...I think the underlying theme here is you have obviously refused to tell us exactly WHAT is on said shirt
Pretty standard shirt.
It's grey, long sleeve. Got Hokies going down the front lengthwise
And on the back it's got a big VT.
Great shirt, really comfortable. Just bad luck.
Yea, you're gonna need to wash that a couple times and then let it sit for a couple years. At that time it can be pulled out again as a bad luck breaker.
I travel to every VT game with a rain poncho that was given to me when I was kid I've never taken it out of the original packing and as long as I've been in attendance with that poncho we've always won whether it's been at Lane or on the road
So the Class of 2017 ring has the HokieBird holding the Commonwealth Cup and standing on a buckeye nut. This worries me.
i drink beer before the game. i also drink beer a lot, other times. that's all i got tho.
Hm, I resemble that one too.
