Film Vault: The Untouchables

I stumbled on this GameDay segment on The Untouchables while sifting through HokieTapes' massive film collection.

0:00 - Remember when we called him "Baby Face" Fowler? No?

0:15 - "Kindred programs..." I can't tell you how many emails I received from Texas A&M fans who wanted Virginia Tech to come to the SEC with them, and be their divisional rival. After Maryland left for the Big Ten, one followed up with me to say, "you missed your chance."

0:39 - R. C. Slocum. That's all.

1:25 - Suggs and Jones sighting! Remember when Beamer Co. just rolled premier tailbacks off the assembly line? Here's to hoping Edmunds and Coleman are the next premier duo in Blacksburg.

2:00 - I heard Rinaldi's voice and teared up out of habit.

3:00 - Frank Beamer on his tailbacks, "The beatings will continue until morale improves."

3:20–3:28 - IS THAT GRANT NOEL PITCHING ON THE OPTION?

3:50 - That reverse-the-field run Kevin Jones made against LSU might have been the best carry I've personally seen by a running back in Lane.

4:30 - "Wake Forest at Purdue 1:00 et"

4:53 - Bryan Randall did show his ability to throw the ball, Kirk, 11 times, for 119 yards.

Foster's defense held A&M to 156 yards and 3 points. In 2002, aTm averaged 386 yards and 28.75 points a game.

Is it just me or does TJ Yeldon remind anyone of Kevin Jones? The PSU folks up here will forever hate us for taking him out of state.

remember when tennessee had a program?

seems like ages ago

Somehow, they are recruiting like they still do. David Cromwell certainly seems to like them.

"ugly maroon jersies" What the hell is Fowler talking about? They are beautiful maroon jersies!

Go Hokies!

I want to see the next Great Hokie HB Tandem this season, with Edmunds and Coleman!

Also, we beat Saban's LSU Tigers that year... this year may we beat Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide!

"Remember when Beamer Co. just rolled premier tailbacks off the assembly line?"

You mean, like, up until a year ago?

Sure, we went through some lean(ish) years between KJ and DE/RmfW (Branden Ore, Mike Imoh, etc), but before Suggs we merely had quality backs, not what I'd call "premier" backs. Highest round we ever had a RB selected before Suggs was taken in the 4th round was Kenny Lewis (Sr.) in the 5th round back in 1980. Stith and Oxendine were both 7th round selections, in case you were wondering, as was Cedric Humes, our only mid-2000s runner drafted.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance this Edmunds kid could get us back on track. Also, don't forget that a big part of the reason we're in the situation we're in is that our last 3 guys have been so good they left early.

I was just about to pose something similar. David Wilson, Ryan Williams, Darren Evans. Some pretty good backs over the past few years plus the ones you mentioned. Last year was an anomaly, at least at this point. Let's give the young guys a shot before we call the TB position dead!

Huh? Tom Rinaldi did an interview that didn't begin by saying something like "Somewhere -- in a corn field in west Kansas," and that very same interview didn't end in tears? Because, as we're all aware:

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

aaah my heart is aching for football season.

Aggies defense says "you get us 14 points, we'll win." They were right.

Hell, our defense didn't even need our offense to put up 14 points (good thing, too, since we only managed 13)

If my memory serves me right, in the 02 game, we gave aTm their 1st non conference home loss in thr Slocum years. And correct me if I'm wrong, but was the read option from our O in 03 with BR and KJ?

Correy

when I was a kid, this was the kind of football that made me love the game: hard hitting, super physical defense. and these highlights make me happy.

if our defense plays bama like this, a.j. mccarron will crumble like a cookie.

So, what you're saying is, "That's the way the cookie crumbles".

What's Important Now

Look at the #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING uni's! Our boys looked like MURDERERS that game. Please, oh please can we please have this for #BEATBAMA? Please?

So just started watching the game from hokietapes and noticed that vincent fuller was playing cb. When did he switch to wr?

I don't recall Vincent Fuller ever playing WR.

I thought he did at some point but I must be wrong.

You might be thinking of Justin Hamilton, who played Safety, Receiver and Running Back while at Tech.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Corey is the only Fuller that has played offense (so far, although there have already been mentions of working Kendall in offensively). If you are having flashbacks of Vinny Fuller scoring touchdowns, there was at least one or two blocks he returned for TDs. I remember the one in Lane he was so far ahead of the pursuit that the camera panned up into the stands to show us going bonkers while he was still on the 10 yard line. I need to find that clip...

Found it! Forgot that it was to beat WVU, that makes it even better. Here's hoping Vincent is now busy raising the next generation of Hokie Fullers. Man, imagine if all four brothers had four sons...we could field an entire defense of Fullers and have some left over for the offense as well...

Oh my god I had never even thought of that. +11 Turkey Legs. I can't decide whether I want to throw water on them or whether I should send Mr. and Mrs. Fuller a bottle of wine and Miles Davis record.

There was an Austin Fuller at WR for a little while more recently, though I don't think he got too much PT. He is also unrelated to the other four, as far as I know. Not sure if that's what you were thinking...

You are correct, ended up transfering to SMU.
