Looking for Steakhouse to eat at after the Pitt game for my birthday. Where would you recommend someone go for a good steak in the Roanoke/Blacksburg area that weekend? Just my wife and I so don't need kid friendly but not looking for black tie either. Thanks for the knowledge TKPers.
Edit: Going there right after the game so attire won't be dressy.

Texas Roadhouse in C-burg, near Wal-Mart and the mall.
Maybe not someplace I can get in my own town.
Bahaha I hope this was a joke
Depending on how much you want to spend I'd say Frankie Rowland's in Roanoke. Pricey, but good.
It's on the shortlist, but I've never had any steaks places in the area so wanted opinions from people who had.
Maybe not known specifically for steak as is Frankie Rowland's, but I've a filet from Table 50 that was extremely good.

I haven't been yet, but I've heard good things about The River Company in Radford.

Palisades out in eggleston or mikie's 7th in Newport. Not steakhouses per se, but I've heard they have good steak among other things. Preston's and 622 North also have good steak dishes.
^^^^This. Palisades has one of the best steaks I've ever had. That chipotle butter is the tits.
The Palisades is one of the best restaurants around. A unique drive but worth it. The setup in an old general store is really nice as well.
The Palisades hands down. You can ask for the espresso rub. It's a personal favorite.
We've always had a good meal at the Great 611 Steak Company just south of Roanoke.

Shula's in Roanoke is like 30$ for a steak but they are delicious and come with a couple of sides. Their non-steak foods are ~15$. It's in a hotel so they're not as picky about clothing.
Frankie Rowlands is probably THE steak place in Roanoke but it's a dress fancy kind of place. Very expensive 30$+ for a steak alone and sides are served family style. Way better service than shula's but you pay for it. One of my favorite steaks.
Palisades was mentioned above that's the opposite direction towards WV and definitely off the road a little ways. Very small place so hard to get a seat. Wasn't expecting much when I got the steak but it was surprisingly good. A lot of different tastes with their sauces/herbs that they change up a lot. Don't recall the prices there.
Personally, I'm pretty big on Bull & Bones. Their filet is pretty great.
Also I've heard good things about the meat selection at the Brazilian place across from the university mall on UCB.
I can second this. I went when it was still doing a soft opening, so I'm sure their selection has only improved. It was very very good
What's the name of it?
Gaucho Brazilian Grille
The wife and I live in Cburg and have heard good news about this place as well. Just too busy building a business to go try it yet. We will soon though. Its small so I would expect a wait on a home game weekend.
Even Jimmy Johns has a wait on a home game weekend.
Blue Apron in Salem.
The only place I even consider a steak. Every other place I can do it better.
Also able to get tapas size sides and protein plates.
High end affordable. I'd call about a reservation for Saturday night after a home game.

I've had a good one at Mac and Bob's... but I wouldn't consider them a steakhouse.
I agree, not a steakhouse by any means. But, it is a GREAT place to sit and watch the remainder of the day's games as they have numerous screens to choose from. Also, if considering a steak, the Pittsburgh steak should be the first, last and only choice. Other steaks there are good, but this is damn good. Generously seasoned NY strip served on a scorching hot cast iron skillet. Order it rare to med rare at the highest. The sizzle and smell dominate the dining room when coming out of the kitchen. Very casual environment, you'd def. fit right in post game.
Bingo, the Pittsburgh is where it's at there.
HIGHLY recommend Blue Apron. It is our go to great dinner option in the area.
Blue Apron is a GREAT restaurant. Food is phenomenal
So looking at tripadvisor etc and seeing mixed reviews about Frankie Rowland's has anyone eaten there recently?
Yes, all flash, no pan.
I have and quality has definitely dropped over the past couple of years. Still a fantastic steak but service has gotten quite slow and they don't seem as eager to make sure everything is perfect.
Logan you seem to be a good judge of what I'm looking for, I want a great steak not too far away from Blacksburg/Roanoke ( hotel for Sat night is in Greensboro) I'm not as concerned about cost as I am quality of food and service followed by travel distance and availability Sat evening. So using that what would you recommend.
Any reason you don't want your steak in Greensboro? Ruth's Chris is very good, and maybe not the best. From VT to Greensboro it is a lot faster to take 81-77-74 through Winston than to go through Roanoke.
Wanted to show wife around Blacksburg right after the game so I thought getting to Roanoke would take less time after that, so dinner wasn't too late.
I think Frankie Rowland's probably has the best steak you can get in Roanoke but it's definitely way more involved. They have a dress code and I've never seen anyone in there in anything less than a suit. Not sure that you'll be in the mood to get dressed up after a football game for this.
Personally I've started going to Shula's in the Sheraton (link here/Trip Advisor) which is about 5 minutes outside of downtown Roanoke. Parking is easy and dressing up isn't required. It's in a hotel but it's surprisingly good. As I mentioned above the service might not be as great as FR, and it's freezing in the restaurant, but you'll get a great meal for ~$30-40/person if everyone gets a steak.
Feel free to read the reviews though to see what other people say about the place(s) but I think Shula's is a nice compromise between getting a good steak and not having to deal with getting dressed up.
^False. No dress code. They may encourage classier dress, but they are not going to tell you to leave because you have on casual clothes. Have been there numerous times and seen the spectrum from black tie to jeans and t-shirt. Ate there within the last 3 months and it was really good.
Good to know
The River Company in Radford or Bull & Bones in Blacksburg.
Bull & Bones will be packed after the game though so I would recommend The River Company.
So Knoxville had a good point about finding s place in Greensboro instead, anyone familiar with the offerings in that area?
Gotta say, we got a gift certificate to Longhorn Steakhouse at Valley View Mall and I was not expecting much, but their porterhouse was REALLY good. I was really surprised. Never would have gone there for steak if not for the gift cert.
