Ask TKP: What are your memories of Virginia Tech vs. Texas A&M in 2003? The last time the Hokies played in a Hurricane.

It seems likely that Hurricane Joaquin will be whipping up wind and dumping rain on Lane Stadium for the Hokies vs. Panthers.

I remember the last time Tech played in a hurricane, 2003 against Texas A&M.

These were the days before running back rotations in Blacksburg. Kevin Jones rushed 30 times for 188 yards and Tech won 35-19.

I was a junior and my season tickets were in the North End Zone. The combination of drunk college students, plus a hurricane, led to an obnoxious amount of noise, tons of slipping down the bleachers and a raucous environment.

If you made it to Lane that night, share your experience with the class.

Power was out at our house, dad, sis and I listened on a battery powered radio. I got pissed at how close it got. Btw, isn't that vid from when Tech played @ aTm in '02?

It should auto-play at the 5:00 mark, which is when the 2003 highlights start.

Same exact scenario for me.

Wife and I sat in the dark listening to Bill Roth and Mike Burnop giving us the action while Isabelle raged outside.

Cue the Barry White...

Until Ron Cherry throws the flag for giving 'em the business.

I wasn't at the game but remember watching it on tv in the basement of my parents house in front royal VA. After the game I went to bed and right before I went to sleep, my dad yelled for me to get downstairs. I spent the next three hours scooping water out of the basement with a pot because the sump pump gave out. But we won so yay!

It was my Rat year in the Corps. We had to wear our rain jackets but then had to shed them to perform the pregame. We were soaking wet afterwards then had to put our rain jackets back ON...yes, that was an early experience in military logic. Don't remember too much about the game itself, though.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Freshman year for me. I sat with my (then future) brother-in-law in his season ticket section, first and second rows of the South Endzone, right behind the uprights. When he swung by my dorm to get me, he looked at me and said, "do you have a poncho?" I, being a dumb freshman, said I didn't and that I would be fine in my hoodie. He offered to buy me one, but I insisted (again, dumb freshman) that I would be fine. After promising him that if I got seriously ill I would absolve him of any wrongdoing to my sister (his soon-to-be wife) and my mother. I proceeded to go nuts all game, with the wind and rain blowing straight in our faces all night. I damn near got hypothermia. Took a scalding hot shower when I got back that night.

Being part of that crowd, all of whom were basically just raging against the storm, was an incredible experience.

"Exit light..."

wait a minute. you married your friend's sister and that very same friend married your sister? am I reading that correctly?

were you friends with him first or your wife, or was he friends with your sister first?

hahaha. Of all places for a typo... shit got weird. Leg for both... but OP, please reread.

EDIT: Wait, it makes sense now. Damn you Mr. Miller Lite. I swear it read differently the first time

His mother and sister are not the same person... it's worse now that I reread it and my comment

I just re-read my post like five times and I'm still not seeing it. Maybe it's because I know what I meant to write.

My sister graduated in spring 2003; she got engaged to her husband that semester. She took a job and he stayed behind to finish a Masters' degree, which coincided with my freshman year. I met him when they started dating during her undergrad.

"Exit light..."

haha... wow, that's what I get for replying while hopped up on powdered candy corn.

i read the first "future brother in law" as your wife's brother, not the obviously correct husband of your sister.

Candy corn, it'll get after ya.

Powdered, though?

yeah, I'm not into the hard stuff like cheetos

There's the GIF I was looking for. After a couple Google searches, I was striking out and was dangerously close to triggering a call from HR.

NEIL PEART IS THE GREATEST FUCKING DRUMMER OF ALL TIME!

Scalped tickets in the SEZ, rented seat backs on the way in and halfway through the game we stood up and the seatback got blown off of the seat and flew down from the upper level towards the cadets. (Hope it didn't hit anyone)

Don't worry about it. If it did hit any of us, we're hardheaded enough, it probably did more harm to the seats.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Man, we used to be good.

I was in the basement of my house watching on a little 12 inch TV. Spliced a bunch of cable cords together and strung them down the steps because we didn't have cable in the basement.

I took a friend that had never been to a VT game, but wanted to go.
He grew up in SEC country and had visited his share of big stadiums, but wanted to see what a Thursday night game in Blacksburg was all about.
I don't remember ever getting so drenched with the intention (stupidly) to stay dry.
I was going to apologize as we were watching the game, but my friend was jumping up and down screaming with the rest of the VT fans, so I figured he was good.
We stayed until the glorious end and drove 4 hours, getting in late/early, with the car smelling like wet drunk dogs.
He still to this day talks about that as one of the craziest environments that he has ever experienced at a college football game.
I remember feeling so proud of our team/fans for the show they put on that night during the hurricane Isabel remnants. The A&M team (my seats were behind the visiting bench) was miserable to be beaten and soaked, but they would turn around and look at the stands thinking ' these are the craziest SOB fans.'
I saw that look on so many visiting players/coaches faces then-begrudging admiration for how vocal/energetic the VT fans were.

My sister falling down the bleacher in the east stands and crying like a 5 year old... looked a lot like this...

She was 18 at the time and I was a Junior in High School. My second game at Tech. We had a hell of a pregame and a great time. My cool flip phone didn't make it out alive... it got a little wet.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Had tickets and decided the day before not to go. It was a good call as I was needed at home. Tried to watch the game using a generator and did for most of the 1st half then cable went out. To this day I have really never seen the game. I went to A&M in 2002 and was looking forward to the home game.

It's online, it is a good watch.

I remember watching the game at home with my dad. Alas, I was only in 8th grade at the time. I live about an hour north of Blacksburg, so it was pouring at the house too. Stayed up late watching the game and ended up not having school the next day due to some pretty significant flooding. I randomly remember, I think, that Mike Tirico was calling the game, and Marcus Vick took some kind of ridiculous huge sack towards the end of the game. Pretty crazy looking atmosphere.

I remember buying an orange poncho, building a "liquor jacket" prior to the game, and it feeling pretty cold despite my "jacket" and temps in 60s. As it turns out, "liquor jackets" don't protect against torrential rain and wind as I had hoped. I actually don't remember the game as much, except for players sliding everywhere.

Why did they play in a hurricane? That seems pretty unsafe. Couldn't they have just moved the game to Friday or Saturday instead of playing during the heart of a storm??

By the time the storm moved as far inland as Blacksburg, it was really just a massive rain cloud. It was just the last remnants of a tropical system that had already been downgraded.

Yeah, I always get a chuckle out of the "hurricane" perspective.

I was a sophomore in the HTs at the time. Our blue blouses got soaked. But we had marched in the Savannah St. Patrick's Day parade the year before in a downpour, which had broken in our blouses for such weather. So, all of the upperclassmen just let the rain soak in. And we were chuckling at the freshmen, whose blouses were still having the water bead up before fulling soaking in.

I also remember practicing on the drillfield that afternoon, and we had figured out how to play the opening line of "Rock You Like a Hurricane."

But later on over the next couple of years, several people started confusing this game with the Miami game. Two night games against Hurricanes, I guess.

My dad brings his 1hokie licence plate to games. When we went to College Station in 2002, security told us we can't bring it in because it can be used as a weapon. There were A&M plates for sale in the souvenir store.

My junior year as well. (Joe, it looks like we're the same age. How about that.)

I remember calling my parents right around kickoff to check on them. They, being in Newport News, were right in Isabel's path. We were talking, and then their phone died. I think I heard from them again in maybe 3 or 4 days, and they were calling from cell phones since landlines were still down (and for some reason our/their street was always the last to get power restored).

Me, I was ALSO in an orange poncho and a new VT hoodie I had just bought at the bookstore to try to keep warm and dry. Neither warm nor dry happened that night in Lane, lol. It was a great game, but for obvious reasons my attention was divided.

Later on I spoke to my grandfather who was able to watch the game since he had installed a generator. And he kept saying "now I KNOW my grandson has better sense than to be out there." Sorry, Granddaddy, but I had no sense.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I was 10 years old, sitting with my dad in the West stands. I'm pretty sure I swam home that night, my memory is a little foggy tho

They'll really get after ya

I called my dad in Richmond just before the game started from my home in Massachusetts, and within moments, his cable/power went out. Then, the local radio station went out so he couldn't even get that on his battery-powered radio. I started calling him every few minutes to give him updates. Finally I realized that my cell phone service just cost pennies per minute. The last two hours, I stayed on the line giving him the play by play. My parents didn't get power back for a week, but my mom told me for some time afterward she would overhear dad on the phone shouting "Run, KJ, RUN!" and she knew that dad was telling a buddy how his daughter helped him "see" the game.

I remember how absolutely relentless the rain was. It was changing directions the whole game, the wind was whipping it sideways into your face. There was no chance that any inch of your body stayed dry. VT was pounding the ball and I remember how impressed I was that the field was even able to have a game on it, the draining system was incredible. The stands were a wave of energy just bouncing and rollicking in the masses celebrating each first down, every stop, every score.

Beamers boys in All Maroon Everything just putting a serious beat down on a quality OOC opponent. . I had forgotten how dominant KJ was, damn.

This was my freshman year. I lived in Pritchard right next to the Stadium. My roommate chose to wear shorts and flip flops into the game. We made it into the 3rd quarter when his blue toes and failure to shiver any more prompted us to finish watching and listening to the game with our dorm windows open while we dried our clothes. It was a damn fun time.

was in my 3rd year in China at that time. there was no option to watch online, or sling , or whatever. and i remember specifically not being able to get radio working online either, i watched espn gamewatch update play by play. it was painful but i was dry at least.

If you ever need a recruiter over there that only speaks English let me know (worst credentials ever). As long as I don't need public transportation I'm there. We would be the beginning of the Chinese Hokie Club.

I was there in uniform for the MVs. It was a thursday night game and we were essentially in the rain from 4pm till the game was over. It was cold, wet, miserable and one of my favorite memories as a hokie. The energy, adrenaline, and mutual suffering/will throughout the game was a testament to the Hokie Nation. Go Hokies!

Winning... I remember winning :(

:( ?

It's sad to say, but man that was such a different era. There was never a thought in my mind to not go to the game. Back then, nothing could keep fans out of Lane. You knew that team on the field was going to be the bully and they fed off the energy that the crowd provided. If I could denote that era in one picture it would be the first play from scrimmage for A&M; a delay of game because the center couldn't hear the count. The crowd was intimidating, the team was intimidating, and Lane was electric. We didn't care what uniform, helmet, socks, or shoes we wore, we just cared that, win or lose, the other team would painfully remember playing the Hokies. Slowly we lost bits and pieces of that entire mentality, from the team to the fans. I'm not sure what it takes to get it back, but I know it can be back; Lane on Labor Day night showed me it's still there and desperately trying to come back.

It was there on Labor Day, we just played a better team. Even the teams of old weren't as good as that OSU team.

All of the hand wringing about driving down from NOVA. I never even gave it a second thought, threw on a poncho and screamed for 4 quarters.

Living in NOVA, if I had a ticket with my name on it I was making that drive immediately!

this was the one game I ever attended that I left early. I remember being cold and wet and my buzz wearing off. Sophomore year, a friend of mine was still living on campus so she and I went to her dorm at the end of the 3rd to watch the rest on TV, and shot gun beers. Punching the hole in one of them, my finger got caught on the jagged edge and cut me pretty good. Did not slow down the drinking though....guess it was my punishment for leaving early

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I remember driving up from NC thinking what the heck am I doing I can watch the game from home and stay warm and dry. But that was one of my favorite games ever. The fans were loud and rowdy and like someone said earlier A &M was looking around like these people are crazy!! And they were right. Who stands outside for 3+ hours in a hurricane? A VT fan that's who!!!

junior year, on the crew team, so coach always got our tickets in the NEZ. The rain was horizontal, the fans were f!@#$%^ insane, and the game was glorious. We won, and it took me 3 days to dry out. Had to hunch over to walk back to Miles after the game cause of the wind. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Man, that's still my favorite game.

I wore a t-shirt, a trash bag with holes cut in it, and then another t-shirt to cover the trash bag. I was pretty comfortable actually. Ended up high in the east stands and made new friends with everyone around me. I swear my flask was magical that night. I kept pouring drinks for everyone and it just wouldn't run out of bourbon. Lots of yelling, hugging, and dancing around like idiots.

The flask could have been filling with rain

Some friends and I got tickets right above the MVs in the north endzone, so we painted a big "Sportscenter coming up next" sign on a twin bedsheet. Sure enough, ESPN zoomed in on us toward the end of the game. Being from Virginia Beach, most of my friends and family didn't have power and weren't able to see it live. Luckily I was able to take a blank VHS tape to the athletic dept's video office and they made a copy for me to send home. I still have the tape, I just don't have a VCR to play it on.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

I was standing near you. My hand got in TV in that shot.

Ha, small world! We were the shirtless painted idiots in the North End Zone using your banner as some protection from the rain.
We clogged the shower drains in Vawter for the next week or so, even after leaving most of the tempera paint on the bleachers. Made ESPN though.

I'm the one on the far left with the VTs all over my shirt!

Right behind the "SC" in what I think I remember being a burlap hat. Not sure what happened to it, but it was as uncomfortable as it sounds.

There are lots of services out there to convert VHS and other formats of video to DVD. I think that memory/bet-winning proof is worth the cost.

I don't remember many specifics about what I was wearing or if my toes were blue by the end of the game but I remember the feeling of 60,000 Hokie fans in full on rage mode directed at the hurricane and A&M. Also, right before we left my friends house to catch the bus to the game, a fairly large tree broke and fell on top of a car in their parking lot. No one bothered to remove it until the next morning.

It was my Freshman year. We got hammered in Pritchard and went to the game. One guy lost his glasses in the storm and really couldn't see for the rest of the game. Another was so drunk that he looked at the scoreboard and saw it was 1st and 10 and asked us how the f*ck the score was 1-10. Our season tickets were in the North Endzone and it was one of the best game experiences i have been a part of. So much fun!

I was a Junior ME student. A buddy of mine and I decided to skip classes that day and tap a keg in the commuter lot at 8:00 am. As our friends got out of class they all migrated to us throughout the day. Our tailgate started with the 2 of us and ended up with several dozen by the afternoon.

Once the game started is was one of the most fun, crazy atmospheres I've been a part of (second only to Miami of that year). We stayed until the end and loved every second of it. Keven Jones going bonkers, a botched kick-off recovered by VT and an A&M team that clearly had no idea what they were in for when they visited little ol' Blacksburg.

Random memories - I always remember wearing a "waterproof" jacket and still got soaked to the bone in it. IIRC it was supposed to be an orange effect game that night. My new orange effect shirt died all the other layers I wore underneath orange.

That was my first VT game that I went to. I was a senior in High School and had applied to Tech without ever seeing the campus. I went to the game and by the time the game was over I had made my decision. The amount of people there and the intensity of the crowd was awesome.

This was my first Thursday night game I attended. I was in 6th grade and school was closed for the next two days because of Isabel. I went with my father, one of his buddies, and my brother. My family lived in Richmond so I remember my dad explaining to my mom that, really, we were getting away from the worst of the storm so it made sense to go. I don't remember a lot of the game except getting soaked and loving every moment of it. The fans were always so loud back then and the team always responded to that. I miss those days.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Was my freshman year. We spent numerous hours leading up to the game taking shots of Bowmans in WAJ. Was ni the NEZ and remember falling/sliding all over the place. I couldnt talk for a few days after that game and if I recall correctly, I burst blood vessels in my eyes somehow and my english prof sent me to the clinic after seeing me because he thought i was dying.

That game was a blast. It was my sophomore year and my fraternity had seats in the NEZ. I actually managed stay dry from the waist up. My dad had just retired from Army and had given me some of his gear, which included a never worn jacket from his rain gear. My feet did alright too in some waterproof hiking boots.

My fraternity generally tailgated in the commuter lot for most games and we had a nice tailgate planned initially. We thought about cancelling it, but 5 of us got together and said F that. Starting around noon, It basically consisted of the 5 of us sitting under tarp strung between two pickups drinking a crap ton of cheap beer and eating Doritos. I ended up making the sprint from the back of the lot to the Burger King in the Johnston student center to get us some hot food. Later in the afternoon we got on the phone to some more people and the tailgate eventually grew to 20 - 25 people by out 5PM, all huddled under this one tarp.

Obviously the atmosphere in Lane was off the charts and I'm pretty sure I didn't have a normal voice for this next week or so from the nonstop yelling. The only thing I really remember from the game itself, was one my brothers giving his jacket to a very attractive freshman girl another one of our brothers knew from HS. The girl showed up in just a hoodie. He was obviously try to score some points with the girl. The girl ends up leaving mid way through the 3rd quarter with his jacket. For the rest of game whenever there was a break in the on the field action he proceeded to on go on expletive heavy rants about this girl. He ended up finding out that the girl lived in AJ which caused the rants to start containing things about exactly how close AJ is to Lane.

Despite the nosedive that season took, the A&M and Miami games certainly made it season to remember.

so...did he get his jacket back?

Actually, didn't we play during a hurricane in 2009 against Miami at Lane Stadium?!?

No, that was just a rainy day in Blacksburg.

It was my junior year and I lived in a house on Harrell Street with a bunch of friends, so every week we had pretty big tailgates for the games. I do remember that in addition to kegs, we had a Mr. Beer home brewing barrel that we filled with a few handles of vodka and mixers for kamikazes. It ended up with one of my friend's dads doing face first slip and slides in his poncho in the mud on the hill by our house. Probably one of the tailgates I remember best.

The game itself was cold and wet, but the energy level in Lane was palpable. I don't remember much beyond that, but the mindset of going into that game and knowing we were going to smack Texas A&M in the mouth is something I definitely miss.

The A&M game was my freshman year. It was my first hokie game I'd ever attended. Some friends in East AJ convinced me to pain up with them so I wore flip flops, athletic shorts and latex house paint. The paint didn't last very long. We stood way up in the east stands on the 50 yard line and lasted the whole game, aided by a steady stream of some of the guys' girlfriends fetching hot chocolate from the concession stands. We didn't leave til the MVs stopped playing superman. Then it was straight to the showers in AJ. We cranked up the hot water in all the stalls and just sat there in the steam til all the feeling returned. After all that I still had to trudge back across campus to my room in Thomas.

Freshman year, 3rd Tech game ever.
First Thursday night game
Sat in NEZ right behind the band
Skipped 8am Chemistry with Glanville the next morning.
Guess who gave an attendance quiz?!

Yeah, but just go see Glanville during office hours, and you were guaranteed a minimum of a C in that class.

Did that. Got a C.

Skipped 8am Chemistry with Glanville the next morning.
Guess who gave an attendance quiz?!

That's a Boooooooooo!

oh shite you just brought back memories of that guy. Had the regular chem 8 am class in mcbryde with him. He was always talking about how he was in the rocky horror picture show fan club, and we should come see him perform at the lyric. That or how he would make a mistake on his overhead notes, write bbbboooooo on it, then crumble it up and start over, no matter where the mistake was. Only teacher I ever had who posted his TA's outside the door and wouldnt let you in late, because he was taking a damn attendance quiz for a class with 100+ students in it. One of my classmates went to his office hours one time to ask him a question about an upcoming exam, and after my friend said he had a couple questions, glanville looked at him and said" Everyone has questions, the problem is that no one has the bloody answers!". Supposedly there was a bottle of stoli on the desk next to him at the time....... lol

I was in that class. No idea if I made it to that particular lecture or not.

Best memory from that class was waking up at 8:25 one day in late October when we had a test. I jumped out of my bed in Thomas hall, threw on a t-shirt, shorts, and flip flops, grabbed a pencil, and sprinted down the street to McBryde. Got there around 8:30 and had to do the walk of shame up to the front of McBryde 100 to ask for a copy of the test. Still finished by the end of class and I think I swung a C on that puppy.

I can honestly say I don't remember anything from that whole class. I had to re-learn basic chemistry by the time thermo came around...

Our group of friends had the bright idea to paint up for that game. Ernest Willford was our #1 receiver that year and we decided to spell out Wilford 19 on our chests. We were on the front row of the NEZ (behind the MVs). Stood out there screaming the whole game. We were super glad to be in the NEZ because it blocked most of the wind and the people in the East Stands looked pretty miserable.

Of course because of the wind and rain we ran the ball on just about every play. But Randall did hit Willford for a first down in the 4th quarter and ESPN cut to a shot of us celebrating. My parents were riding the storm out in Richmond without power. But they got a call from my aunt, who had recognized me on tv, and wanted to know what the heck I was doing out in the cold and rain without a shirt on.

Also a great weekend for me as I met my now-wife who was a student at CNU who had to evacuate out of Newport News. So she came up to Blacksburg to stay with her sister and went to the game, the rest is history.

We had a group painted up standing a couple rows behind you. We spelled out "ISABEL".
I still have a pair of shorts that the top half are maroon from the rain making all the paint run off.

I'll find the photo off my old computer and put it up at some point.

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

I have followed this board for over a year now, but this is my first post and I feel it's a great topic for my first. I was in my third year working in the ODU Athletic Dept. (also my Alma Mater but we didn't have football then and I started rooting for VT in high school as I went to Deep Creek HS and we had a bunch of players play at VT during my HS/College days). My birthday was the Wednesday before and I already had taken off work to go to a DMB concert in Raleigh. With Isabel coming ODU had cancelled everything through the weekend, so I decided to stay at my friends house in Danville after the show and until the storm finished whipping up on the 757. We had tickets to the game and were supposed to meet up with my former boss from ODU who was an alumnus of VT track and field now living up near VT. We called my old boss early that morning and he said we wasn't going and we were crazy to go. We were still going and left the house mid day. My friend and I are on 81 about 5 miles from the VT exit and my old boss calls and asks where we are. I tell him we are about to get off 81 and he tells us to hurry up he is tired of waiting at the McDonalds right up the road and he is ready to "mobile" tailgate in his car. We are pumped that he is now on board. We meet up and pile in his SUV and head to campus. We park at the library and tailgate in the back of his car for a bit and my friend and I construct make shift weather gear out of a bunch of lawn sized trash bags. My old boss being much wiser had full on rain gear. We start walking towards stadium and my former boss (who is a black man) looks at my friend and me and says "you realize other than me the only black folk who are going to be in the stadium are the players and coaches on the field". He is convinced there is going to be nobody there. We get closer to the stadium and it's getting louder and louder and we walk in and it's already about 85% full and my boss looks at us and says "you white folk just ain't right". We proceed to have a great time in the lower south end zone and the Hokies got the big W. The field held up great and I didn't even get that wet. Maybe I should have become an engineer as my design held up. My old boss and I always bring up that story when we see each other. Fun times

It's the first live sporting event I watched over the internet since that was the only way my family could watch it since we were living in Valparaiso, Indiana at the time. I don't remember how though, ESPN 360 wouldn't come out for another 2 years. Also if anyone wants to fell old I was only 10 years old when that happened.

I remember it being less of a hurricane than was predicted, but still a lot of rain. It was also very dark and menacing in the stadium.

I was able to bring in a full 1/5 of bourbon that I wrapped up in my poncho. Because I couldn't conceal the bourbon and wear the poncho at the same time, I decided it was better to get wet than risk losing the bourbon. So I became nearly hypothermic around half time and had to go and buy a whole knew outfit from the souvenir shop under the stadium.

Me and a couple of friends were in the top row of the east end. Lane was rocking. Even during hurricane, there were only bout a 1000-1500 empty seats. Sad to see that our announced sellouts these days have less turnout.
Remember before the game, an AtM female fan and a group of us got into a good natured foul mouthing competition. Also on the way over to the campus on bus, aa gal decided to give her guy a good blow job. Crazy day..

I remember the tailgate more than the football game.

We had strung together a series of tents, connected by tarps, in Lot 8 by the Steamthingie. But there wasn't enough room for all of us and the beer pong table. So the beer pong table was half-inside/half-outside the tarp. Since the winner got to stay on the table, the winner's side was under the tarp. Had been tailgating since 9-ish, and the rain came around 2pm, IIRC. As a result, the game was a bit of a haze, but I do remember the poncho being somewhat useless by the 3rd quarter. My Nokia phone with the VT faceplate did not survive that day.

Had a few folks from the 12thFan A&M board come by, and I vaguely remember contributing to the delinquency of a young TSL poster named "Techstudent", who now runs that other board.

Good times.

One of my favorite games ever. I was ten at the time. What a game to remember. #AllMaroonEverything

One of my all-time favorites. A group of maybe 20 of us were supposed to take a bus down from NoVA that morning. I don't remember if the organizer called it off or if the bus driver bailed, but either way we got word around 9AM that there would be no bus. I called my buddy and told him to get to my house ASAP. I threw a change of clothes and the cooler in the truck and we hit the road. We stopped by my sister's place on the way (alphabet stores weren't open yet) and swiped a fifth of captain morgan. Once we hit traffic we bailed on 81 and took the back way through Catawba, hauling ass down sketchy and occasionally flooded back roads while blasting "Rock you like a hurricane". We arrived at the tailgate with an empty bottle of captain morgan and no idea where we going to stay that night. Don't remember much of the tailgate but the game was fantastic. Despite being soaked through we were feeling no pain... well, at least not until the next day. We ended up at Big Al's afterwards buying drinks for some aTm fans that made the trip and had a blast. Luckily a buddy that lived in the 'burg let us crash in his basement so we didn't end up having to sleep in the truck. Maybe not the smartest thing I ever did, but damn did we have a good time!

We were out to sea in September for a 3 week underway (USS Theodore Roosevelt). Were supposed to pull in to Florida or some island in the Caribbean or someplace; my wife was in NOVA enjoying the Dave Matthews tickets I'd gotten us for her birthday (our underway schedule had changed; looking it up, 9/13 at Nissan Pavilion). After heading south to escape the storm, which promptly hit our homes (families), captain was like "Good news, we're still getting our port call!" We were like "screw you, a hurricane just hit Norfolk." Long story short, we went to Virginia instead of Florida.

I can't remember if I watched a replay or if I saw it live on TV (or whether we had pulled in yet or not), but I was impressed with both the team's performance and the fact that they played the game in the first place. Wife was okay, she was still out of town.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

What amazed me was how well that field performed. It had zero standing water.
