Would Chip Kelly be a Good Fit at Virginia Tech? Could Virginia Tech Land Chip Kelly?

so gobbler country had the latest coaching rumor, which was Chip Kelly pushed out at Philly and potential Hokie coach.

I still think Beamer has until 2016 at least. Not sure how Kelly would fit in culture wise. Someone did point out that Beamer and Kelly lack of NC is one of the only things they have in common.

Thoughts?

Honestly, Virginia Tech doesn't have enough money to land Kelly. The man last had Nike writing blank checks for his recruiting budget, running camps in his back yard, and making sure he had everything he wanted in facilities.

We have the buildings and money to land a good P5 coach who will win lots of games, but Chip's price tag I suspect will be a bit too high for us.

Didn't Chip Kelly skip out of Oregon just ahead of the NCAA infraction committee coming to town?

Why would Oregon fire Mark Helfrich?

True, I was thinking that he gets demoted back to OC but there is no chance that happens nor Chip goes back there now that I think of it. I doubt the Eagles fire him after the year though, unless they completely tank the season.

Although the pictures may appear puzzling out of context, they're actually screen captures from a harmless moment in 1967 when Fred Rogers led some youngsters through the familiar children's song "Where Is Thumbkin?," which is traditionally accompanied by participants' holding up the corresponding fingers as they are each named in the song

It's run in reverse. It was some counting song, and he ends up putting his hands behind his back.

If we are going to fantasize about unlikely home run hires, is there any reason we shouldn't consider Mike Tomlin? I feel like we should at least give him a look.

I don't think it's a stupid conversation. At some point we're going to have to discuss candidates to replace Frank Beamer, and we should do it respectfully and intelligently. Not everyone may want to talk about it right now, and I agree it's more offseason fodder than something to talk about in the middle of September, but everyone should just ignore the discourse if they don't want to add to it.

This was more in line with the first couple comments on this thread, before the title was changed. Still, seems like literally any time another coach struggles at a bigger organization or succeeds at a smaller one, we're right back here. It isn't even July anymore.

I just thought it was funny. Thanks.

I'm not sure how I feel about Chip Kelly. Yes, the guy had a great run at Oregon and is an offensive innovator for the college game. But let's be honest: his offenses, more times than not, came up short in the big game. Sure, he put up a lot of points against mediocre to decent competition, but when he ran up against elite defensive talent, that offense usually sputtered (LSU, Stanford, Auburn, OSU). I'm sure Chip would be on Whit's short list of dream candidates for the job, but would we even be able to afford him? Possibly, but I'm sure a lot of other teams with huge budgets would come calling as well.

I honestly think this 2015 VT team is the best team we have had since 2010/2011. I know it's early, and I need to see us win a few more games, but I'm starting to see Lefty's offense pay off. If we can run the table or at least have a 9-10 win season this year, with all the young talent coming back next year, Beamer would be a fool not to return for at least one more year with a chance at a big run in 2016. Would Kelly even be available in 2017 or beyond? If he can't turn Philadelphia around this year, I think he's out of a job at the end of this season. Not only is his supposed strength (offense) putrid so far, but he has completely gutted all the offensive talent Philly had amassed. If he can't make something happen, I think it's completely unforgivable to get rid of guys like Shady, Maclin, Jackson, etc., and the Eagles will probably pull the plug. If that's the case, I don't see the timeframe aligning for him to even be a possibility for us.

Hypothetical: If Chip Kelly's Ducks played in the ACC (everything else being the same just different opponents) would they still be 13-0 or 12-1 every year? If Bud were the DC (with his scheme and players firmly in place), would that get them over the hump for a national title?

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

I agree that a Chip Kelly offense paired with a Bud Foster defense could be outstanding. And I will concede that any offense will usually struggle against elite defenses. Do I think a Chip Kelly offense in the ACC would be great? Yes. But would Bud be willing to stay on as DC? And would Kelly want to retain him? Kelly has shown that he wants to do things his way, and he expects total buy-in by the entire program and players. I'm not sure he and Bud could coexist, but I could be wrong. Who knows.

Hypothetical: If Chip Kelly's Ducks played in the ACC (everything else being the same just different opponents) would they still be 13-0 or 12-1 every year?

Probably, but they would still have that one game a year that bit them in the ass, costing them a title. Some years, it's which ever game keeps them out of the conference title game; some years it's in the conference game; and other years, they can get all the way to the national title game and lose.

It would make the game even faster maybe. 3 and outs for D and fast scoring O. Blur of motion.

He's a perfect fit then. We also come up short in big games

It's funny because I actually said this as a joke to one of my friends over the summer. Tech goes 2-10 and Philly goes 0-16, we end up with Chip Kelly. Dwayne Lawson in a Chip Kelly offense with Bucky(possibly), Ford, Phillips, Cline, Durkin, Edmunds and McMillian. Now that's a scary offense.

"These people are losing their minds" - Mike Patrick

Wow gobbler county has really gone downhill lately.

I'm not sure if you can/would discuss this openly but has SB Nation approached you?

I like a lot of SB Nation's work and GC is a complete embarrassment. I don't know what resources they provide and what strings come attached with being affiliated with them, but curious if TKP replacing GC would ever be a possibility.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

They passively approached me a few years ago, and I was never approached again. Many of my favorite college football writers, specifically Spencer Hall, Ryan Nnani and Bill C., write for the SBN mothership, but the team blogs are extremely hit or miss. I don't think it's in TKP's best interest to join their network.

SBNation has the best college football coverage. Bill Connelly is terrific. Spencer Hall and EDSBS have been a favorite for many years.

lately

lolz.

Right now, my focus as a fan is on this season. Looking to the future is great, but I'm excited about the foundation Lefty is building, and I expect to see the fruits of his and players' labor this season. What I would love to see is a successful offense under Lefty, Bud stays at Tech, and the next head coach is one that manages from a high level and lets his coordinators have a lot of control and flexibility to what they're hired to do. Maybe that next head coach is Bud, and Torrian gets the bump to DC, maybe the next head coach is someone else. But with where we are right now, I certainly hope the next head coach doesn't flip the program on its head trying to do something totally different. That is almost certainly what Chip Kelly would do. Would we win, maybe, but Hokie donors and benefactors will want a smoother transition than he would provide.

Let's focus on this season and ECU!! Besides I feel confident that Beamer coaches next season no matter what. No way he misses Bristol.

And no way he misses ND.

Interview Chad Morris.

He'd be on my short list. VT would be a major move up for him, could prolly get him for much less than RichRod.

(note - my phone auto corrected RichRod to EighT of.)

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

Not sure how many of you remember, but back when we were looking for Bill Dooley's replacement, Gary Stevens, the Miami OC, was publically campaigning for a VT interview. Never got one, and then Beamer was hired.

It always puzzled me that the OC from the best program in the nation didn't even warrant an interview. Then, many years later, when Beamer was looking at UNC, rumors about Gary Darnell, the W. Michigan head coach, being Weaver's choice for Beamer's replacement ran rampant.

At that point I finally realized that OCs look to who they know, not who's the best available. Same way that Beamer liked to promote from within and hire ex-players. So RichRod, at least in my head, is pretty much a done deal.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

The writer who posted the Chip Kelly story mentioned in it that he still firmly believes it's Rich Rod and that there is speculation that it's a done deal.

I hate reading stuff like this. How can any coach be a done deal when: Frank is still here, coaching jobs have to be open in Virginia, Rich Rod is getting everything he asks for currently and a decent majority of the fan base (money) doesn't want him.

coaching jobs have to be open in Virginia

"Have" to be. An AD could easily make a backroom deal with a candidate and then just open the job for a week or something as a formality.

That AD would run afoul of potentially breaking Virginia law, alienating donors and fans and making coaches angry who didn't get a shot.

a.) There are plenty of state jobs where the agency has a specific person in mind and tailors the job description and interview process for that person.

b.) Has it been proven that the coaching staff falls under the category of state employee? When the Richmond Times-Dispatch puts up the database of all state salaries, none of the VT coaches show up, because none of their paychecks come from state funds. (Unlike Mike London, who gets $300K from the state.)

Yep, fun fact: all VT coaches (when I last checked the database) have the job title of "professional lecturer" and draw a salary from the university. Most of their compensation is from the Athletic Dept, but the school does indeed pay a baseline salary.

"Exit light..."

Ah, that's why I never found them. I was looking under the wrong job title, and if they get under $50K from the state, their name doesn't appear.

Beamer's base salary from the school was $272k in 2011 (just from a quick search of the Collegiate Times salary database).

There are ways around this. Legitimate ones. The University can do what they call an "emergency hire" for a position of immediate need. That position is not subject to the same regulations. The position can open later, with a public announcement, and there are criteria for the person who was hired as the "emergency" filler to retain the position or they can keep it by virtue of being a candidate in the full search.

"Exit light..."

Actually, they can just have the job open for a week. Every job I've applied to with the state has been open for exactly a week.

State jobs ad for at least 2 weeks usually but can be less. It's not normally an optimal recruitment if only open 1 week.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

You can have an understood agreement in place while still doing this. Trust me, its been done, its how my wife got her job. She was already working in a role that was paying part time, and the overall manager wanted to bring her full time. They created a job, interviewed multiple people, and everything. Her interview process was literally walking in the door, saying hi, and walking out. The next week she had the job offer she knew she was getting months earlier.

There are ways to handle this process even if the decision has already been made and to still keep it legal.

Signed -

You're Not Good Enough For My Daughter!!! VT Dad

Almost exactly what Nick Saban told Lane Kiffin...

do i think it would be a canidate yes.. would it fit probably not.. I see Chip Kelly jumping from job to job..

it'd be awesome if it happened. if chip can keep his job through 2016-17 season, maybe the timing would be right. whit has shown he'll spend money. it's not probable, but it's possible. but there'd probably be some other school out there that would outbid VT.

and yes, chip + bud with 85 scholarship players, it'd be a devastating combo.

I'm torn on this

He knows offense very well. And he showed in Oregon that when he gets his players, his offense puts up ridiculous numbers. But that said, there's the whole "Chip Kelly is racist" aura around him right now, valid or not, and I'm not sure I want that coming to Blacksburg. That, and his defenses have tended to leave a lot to be desired.

That said, he would be a homerun hire, and would make us a national power quickly.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

His skills would be put to the test in Blacksburg, especially in terms of running a program and recruiting without essentially having unlimited money from Nike.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

There's also the distinct possibility the Nike money (not Oregon levels, but a decent amount) follows him to wherever he goes so that program can be another version or Oregon, allowing Nike to extend its brand influence on the game.

Imagine if a Nike backed Chip Kelly team played Nike backed Oregon in the Playoffs. It would be a boondoggle for them.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I still think there would be an enormous gap between what Nike would put towards Oregon because of the obvious Phil Knight connection and what they'd give to a school who happens to employ their former coach...even despite his success at UO.

That being said, if they were going to try and extend their brand influence I would guess it would be at Penn State, where Nike's soon to be CEO went.

Been there, couldn't do that.

Joe thanks for making the title clearer. I struggled there.

Also, I was just throwing out what another site wrote about. I know it's the beginning of the season, and I personally think Beamer isn't going anywhere before 2016, and if all goes well, maybe longer. But it was an interesting thought, and based on the previous Rich Rod discussion, figured it would be good to talk about. I for one would rather have Kelly over Rich Rod as long as he doesn't bring infractions with him.

The other question would be does Lefty stay OC if Kelly (or any of these hypothetical HC) Comes in. I bet there are many schools that would snatch him if he was ousted.

If ANY "name" HC comes in, they most likely will bring 75% of their own guys with them. They are going to put their system in place and will have guys that can do that; not have to educate the current staff on how he's going to do things.

Chip Kelly (or Rich Rod) means Lefty is 90% out. There's a slim chance he could hang on, but I doubt it.

A new coach would almost certainly want his own staff. The only exception, perhaps unique to VT, would be our defensive unit. I could see a new HC wanting Bud to stay, and likely Torrian, as well. Not sure about the rest. I love Wiles and Brown for what they've done for VT, and this is the kind of turnover we wouldn't be accustomed to, but professional deference only goes so far with a new HC, I would have to think. Bud and Torrian are the best at their respective positions. The rest would have to be a judgment call by the new HC.

"Exit light..."

How do you think Bud would feel staying on board and then having the majority of his assistants cut loose to be replaced by people of the new HC's choosing? I'm not seeing it.

Every second counts

The possibility of any of this would be remote. Just think that if Beamer steps down, Wiles may retire and Brown is probably the most expendable among the assistants if a new HC wants to make changes. The entire premise is that Bud is the best in the business and (1) the HC wants him - duh and (2) Bud is cool with staying where he is - possibly far-fetched but it could happen. All of this is predicated upon a deal basically being cut so that Bud stays with consent of the new HC, and the new HC comes in with the approval of Bud. Could it happen? Maybe. Will it? Wouldn't consider it especially plausible.

"Exit light..."

Agreed. I think a lot of people are giving the possibility of that scenario happening a much, much larger chance than they should.

Every second counts

Why do we think RichRod would leave Zona to begin with? He has that program rolling right now and are arguably more relevant than VT at the moment.

EDIT: Meant to put this reply under the RichRod discussion above.

The same reason Peterson moved to Washington from Boise. Or any coach moves to any "down program". Our program has a higher ceiling. Since hes the coach that made them relevant, I'm sure he believes he could do the same again.

That's a much more extreme example. The gap between Boise/Washington is much larger than Arizona/VT. Boise isn't even Power 5, which is becoming increasingly important.

Every second counts

Our program has a higher ceiling.

This is debatable. Tucson is a sports town and it's all about UofA. In that way it is very much like a Blacksburg, except that it is a large city with donors that have seriously DEEP pockets. It has long been speculated in Tucson, given the money they have there that the university could easily build the program into relevance.

Since he's the coach that made them relevant, I'm sure he believes he could do the same again.

RichRod has done a great job there no doubt, but really at the time of his hiring UofA was the one taking the chance on a coach every had dismissed. They gave him the keys to the kingdom and then have constantly improved that kingdom and added to the coffers. The investment they are putting into football and basketball was led by the Administration and AD. (Actually you could say that it has been led by some "concerned" boosters)

RichRod has done an excellent job there but he was made relevant before he made UofA relevant.

And all of this still fails to consider the sheer amount of money UofA is putting up to ensure he stays there. He has a 6 million dollar bonus to stay for next 8 years, and that amount appreciates. By the end of the 8 years it is thought the value will be closer to 9 or 10 million. that is on top of his base salary and contractual bonuses for getting to bowls, etc. And from my #sauces there they are looking for new ways to increase incentives. There is simply no way in hell VT can swing that kind of money. No way.

RichRod is RichRod so... yeah, maybe he will leave a sure thing to come to VT but I just cannot imagine why anyone would leave a situation where the city, university and donors are literally giving you more than you ever asked for while having the on-field success that he is having. That just doesn't make sense to me. But... you know, RichRod so he could be stupid a second time.

So just to pose the question out of curiosity, let's say you had two options in front of you:

A) Hire a new HC and Bud Foster leaves but we are guaranteed a national championship
B) We hand the reigns to Foster and continue with hopefully slowly building the program and hoping to break through

So again, A guarantees a championship (hypothetically) but loses Foster. B makes Foster HC and gives no guarantees

Taylor... looking desperately...now throws it DEEP..HAS A MAN OPEN! CAUGHT! DANNY COALE! ALL THE WAY! OUT OF BOUNDS, at the three...

Take the championship. How is that even a question? As long as we don't incredibly fuck over Bud on the way out, there is no dilemma here

Honestly I have to admit I'd struggle with it myself. I like the idea of feeling like we "earned it" as a program vs feeling like we somewhat sold out by bringing in a big name

Look at it this way. With very few exceptions, the longest that a player is going to influence the program, playing for VT, is 4 years. It's nice to be sentimental, but as the players change so do coaches. The NC trophy is the goal, not a lifetime achievement award.

To play devil's advocate, wouldn't that be something for us to hold on to though? You say as players change so do coaches but that's not really true in our case. Sure we've swapped around position coaches but our cornerstones are Beamer and Foster and that is the type of thing that few, if any, other schools can claim. Maybe it is sentimentality but I'm just not sure which way I'd go given the choice. Say you bring in Chip Kelly and you win a championship in two years. Two years later Florida offers him more money and he leaves us with a Fosterless team and a bunch of recruits that were specific to his system, possibly setting us back. Was it still worth it? (And the answer might be absolutely yes, just playing DA)

I won't claim that I would be upset with a national championship though and everything that could do for the program.

At every other school, the head coach has changed. They don't change every 4 years, but they have changed.
Like I said, we are unique, and maybe in a way we are spoiled. But I believe it's become more complacent than anything.

Frank has been HC since 1987. During that time, (depending how you count some of them,) 18 different schools have won the NC. Every one of them has changed coaches between 1987 and now. And they have a title. Holding on to a coach is nice, and I believe Frank has done an outstanding job keeping the program above board (unlike many that have come and gone at other schools since 1987.) But, if a coach moves on after an NC, I'm ok with that...I'll have MY NC as an alumnus of VT.

HOWEVER, what you believe is that a coach would come into VT, win a title and then want to leave! Why would he. With Whit, the ACC, Blacksburg, the culture around VT as Hokie Nation, I would say there are only a handful of jobs that would trump the VT job AFTER winning an NC.

Then it seems you want Foster and Beamer to win a championship more than Virginia Tech

Wouldn't that make it that much easier to bring in another big name or high ceiling coach to replace Kelly? The pieces would definitely be in place, recent trophy included.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Yes.

This question is a no-brainer. Of course you bring in the coach that gives you the best chance at a national championship.

A..
that will open more doors (recruiting, nike, UA, overall hype) and help build the VT brand that Whit and the athletic department seem to be working towards.

I understand the want to be loyal to those that have been loyal to VT. However, just as it was before Bud was DC, there will be others. I will take the NC every time. Nothing against Bud, but the crystal trophy has to show up sometime. He may or may not be there.

We are in a unique situation in the NCAA football landscape with Frank remaining the head coach as long as he has. (and isn't done yet...) I was at VT when we DIDN'T make a bowl game. Some on the this board weren't even alive then.

Definitely a fair point and I don't think I would hate the decision either way.

I know Frank is an Idol. I saw the birth of it from 1992 til now. I wrote this a few years ago, and provides some sentiment on Beamer. Frank's our man

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Am I the only one that doesn't know what "lack of NC" means? Can someone enlighten me?

"Tyrod did it, Mikey!"

I think he means National Championship. Oregon is/was the only other non-traditional power school (besides Virignia Tech) to play in a BCS title game.

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

This. Those are the only two teams to ever play for a BCS championship (or in the playoffs) that had not previously won a poll championship. AKA only BCS games with Oregon or VT have been chances for a school's first national championship.
