go for it
I was going to write some stuff here but I'm afraid I'll use too many expletives for my point to come across.
edit: Honestly there's nothing else I can add that hasn't been said already, so I'll just leave this:

no more apologism. Beamer and this team are simply not good, don't have the talent, and aren't going anywhere but down. I love you Beams but he's gotta understand he's undermining everything he built by staying here past his time. If this keeps up, it will become the norm, and there's no escaping ACC Mediocrity. Let's kill it fellas, and try to start over.
Pathetic. 100 yards of offense. Good luck beating ANYBODY with that output. By far the worst Tech team I have watched in recent memory.
I want to hear a legitimate argument for Beamer sticking around that isn't built on homerism, sentimental value, or what he did over 10 years ago.
EDIT: And "things could be even worse without him" doesn't count. A team should try to win, not try not to lose.
I think he's gone at the end of the year.
St this point he has to be. Putting Motley back out there when he's clearly hurt is inexcusable. That is on Frank. Period. That's an on the spot fireable offense.
I mean I could go into the half empty stadium, the pathetic offense, the miserable defense... but at the end of the day he was risking the long term health of his kid because... why? No, that's the final straw, he must go at the end of the year.
Absolutely agree. He was jeopardizing Motley's health, not just his playing career. God only knows what condition that shoulder is in.
Just playing Devil's advocate here...but we praised Brewer last year when he played hurt through the UVA game last year. Sort of seems like the same situation, just a different outcome.
But I'm going to go ahead and eat my words from last week. Beamer and crew must go. We are being out coached, out recruited, and out played every single week now.
Difference is that he was pulled in that game and wanted to go back in. Motley was never pulled.
It's time to Fire Frank Beamer. He looks lost, we make every team we play look like a top 20 team. we are 2-3 with our only wins vs Furman and Purdue ( the Wake Forest of the Big 10). I hope none of the VT homers take offense and can take the blinders off. We need Whit to make a change and get both Beamers out.
You don't 'fire' someone like Beamer, you sit him down at the end of the year and explain how the program would be better with someone else as head coach
Firing him would be a disaster. Look at Texas right now. Whit needs to sit down with him and make him realize that it is best for him and VT to move on.
THis is the kind of explanation I was expecting. He makes $2 million a year. I know we don't have "great talent" but we have way better talent than ECU and Pitt. We are so predictable on offense, it's so tough to actually watch VT play. We are going to get smoked by BC and UNC. We look awful, Beamer is gone at the end of the season. You can't have a talk with Beamer and expect an actual change in on field play.
Hate to break it to you but we don't have better talent than Pitt. And ECU's receivers were more talented than our secondary.
Yeah recruiting has been that bad...
Texas made the mistake of letting Mack Brown stay too long...Charlie Strong has to start 17 true freshman this year. I dont think Charlie will last either because of the expectations but thats what happens when you let a coach stick around too long.
How does Frank look lost is all he coaches is special teams which actually looked ok. Its the fact that he lets his son play with out RB rotation like they are his play toys in the sand box and never show any kind of emotion towards any of his staff to show he is active in the product on the field. Damn sit in the stands with the rest of us if all you are gonna do is watch.
Just beat UVA, just beat UVA... that is all I ask now. Not spending any more money on any VT football gear. My heart still goes out to the players who play their heart out but. Coaches you are the ones to blame. I hope the empty stands speak volumes to Whit and really have a hard sit down with Beamer.
No no!!! Winning against UVA only gives people hope around here in HOKIE land and for some reason makes people forget all the other shit stains across our schedule.
No!! I hate this take and my fingers are fighting but I would rather see UVA beat us this year then see one more year of this shit show on our sidelines.
I would rather see UVA beat us
No. No. No. VT can bottom out without this.
Then get ready for another hype video of how we beat UVA again and forget all the other awful shit we do "magic" from the VT Football media groups. "Beamer has beat UVA soooo many times, he is sooo good, look at this streak" Done with this.
Stadium not even half full and Burnop is saying how we have such great fans and the lose of the Norfolk fans really hurt us not showing up due to the rain. COME ONE DUDE. It rained yes but the writing is on the wall.
you think its beating UVA that is keeping fans loyal?
My experience is more like "I know we nearly missed a bowl again, but at LEAST we DIDN'T lose to UVA". Maybe your friends don't know football or generally are ignorant? Or you are?
Also, in all honesty, UVA is a dumbster fire. Why are we taking pride that we beat a piss poor team, rival or not, I definitely do think we should be bragging a UVA win.
Does it really feel like good when we beat UVA anymore or is it more like putting a band-aid on a broken leg.
Beating UVA is a bit presumptuous at this point. We don't beat many teams these days
You have to keep some challenges and optimism in there.
Two weeks ago, it was the ACC Championship.
I will still buy gear, it's still my school and will always be home. The football team being bad doesn't change any of that.
Agreed. I don't buy VT tshirts and sweaters because I expect wins. I wear VT stuff because I'm proud of the school and community that educated me.
Agree, beat the Hoos. But, the players have to take much of the blame as well. In the first qtr and 3rd qtr, our LBs overplayed and didn't fill the gaps giving up big yards. Bud did fix that after. Meanwhile the offensive lineman whiffed on blocks all day, especially against delayed blitzes. The only phase that looks good consistently is special teams. They did the job again today. bTW Frank coaches them.
Shane needs to go, period. He has not realized that the best talent needs to be on the field and it's not JC. He's a strong player, but, simply physically too small to break anything. But, Shane stays with him at the start and puts us in a hole with 3 & outs. Shane needs to go.
Frank also coaches the rest of the team...
No venting required. Just numb to the experience. Ready for something fresh.
I kind of feel the same actually. I didn't get mad or upset at all today, it's really not worth getting high blood pressure over.
Absolutely. Definitely more important things in life to get worked up about. You know, like things we have some control over. It's obvious to me as a fan that what we think matters little.
Quit getting mad 2 years ago. My wife even comments that she couldn't believe I wasnt getting upset as bad as Tech was playing. Just not the same anymore......need an overhaul, Whit will get us a good one. The Coastal us do weak it won't take much to turn things around.
Neither did I. I didn't care at all and I hate that.
After the past 4 seasons you learn to accept mediocrity
Do we think that Foster could be a good head coach? Or is he like a Lane Kiffin and only able to coordinate?
Well, all I do know...is that Bud Foster will have intensity. And the team will mirror that. So yeah, maybe he will be. He's kept us in afloat for years. We owe him a chance to lead this team.
Plus I think it would nice to see what Gray or Wiles would do with the defense as the D-Coord. BUT, we not at that point yet. Today was just an exhibition conference game...lol
No we don't. That's the mentality that has kept Beamer around this long. If Foster really had eyes to be head coach he would have gone out and become one already. He deserves an interview from Whit and nothing more
No on Foster. Bud can't / doesn't recruit. We need someone at the top who is dynamic. Bud is not that guy. Also, not sure how he would handle all the PR fluff that head coaches are required to do. Bud's not into fluff.
If our new coach wants to keep Bud as defensive coordinator, fine, but other than that, I'm not on board.
I wouldn't mind a coach that's not into fluff.
It's time.
It's long past time! This cannot continue. All I have heard for the last 4 yrs is" wait till next year" This coaching staff needs to go , while this team still has a few supporters left . This is the culmination of Beamer's good ol boy network, lack of recruiting, nepotism & poor coaching.
It's time. Love ya Frank, but it's best for VT and you to move on.
The coaching staff better own this one in postgame. That was pretty atrocious on their end. Pissing away all our timeouts way early. Keeping Motley in the game. Not even attempting a run game. General offensive playcalling. All the penalties. At the very least, I think the Loeffler experiment is over.
Prepared for my downvotes. But if there is a single Beamer on the sidelines next year not one more cent of my hard earn money will go to anything remotely related to VT or VT athletics.
Foster isn't out of the blame either. Piss poor preparation on another Mobile QB. Your one of the highest Assistant Coaches on the staff DO YOUR JOB!
Shane, just go away, far far away and don't comeback to VT ever again. Daddy can't wipe your ass forever like he did for Newsome, Stinespring, and all his boys till he was made to make changes.
All I heard was "wait till 2015, bringing back Hokie Football" Well I waited and suffered but no this in on you the coaches. This performance is on you and you lost my support!
QB had one 26 yard run, both were quiet after that
9 Yards rushing, fucking shane Beamer is God awful. Keep Mcmillian in the game. He needs to be our #1. He would break a 10 yard run then get pulled for undersized senior who doesn't deserve to start just because he's a senior.
Just how prepared for down votes did you get?!
Im rarely negative so I wasn't sure. I would be lying if I wasn't grabbing ankles.
I am in agreement, unless we see the change that Beamer is talking about. But if we win any less than 6 of the next 7, I think I am in agreement. Today was the day that got Beamer fired at the end of the season.
Beamer doesn't make the offensive play calls, but, his son does make the RB decisions. We are really missing Billy Hite. He recognized talent. Lefty still thinks he has the offensive line and talent he wishes he had, insteand of adjusting to what he has.
Correct, he does not make offensive play calls. But when you see that things aren't working, then change them.
Plus, if we were to look at some data of Billy Hite's tenure and the RB coach and Shane Beamer, the data would speak for itself. But, of course there are other factors that would make that look non-accurate. Still, you know what I'm getting at, shit ain't workin.
Why are our players going around to the fans and getting warm reception from some fans, they should have their asses in the locker room getting it handed to them.
I think that is where the players families sit.
Are the offensive coaches even talking to each other? Everything they do looks like a mess. They can say stuff like lack of execution post game, but even if that's the case, something is not being done right at practice. I really hope things improve when Brewer comes back, otherwise I don't think this program has much to look forward to this season.
Also, what was the deal with leaving Motley in there at the end instead of Lawson? Make any excuse you want about having a limited package and no experience or whatever, but anybody with eyes could see that Motley was hurt and had no shot to make a play at the end.
not only that, Lawson has been your backup for 3 weeks, so why is still only available for a 'limited package'??
Exactly. Motley is injury prone, that is known, yet you still don't prep Lawson after Brewer goes down?
I have no words for the ineptitude of the staff.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We needed a spark, and the offensive staff couldn't sack up and try to create one.
Plus we already burned his redshirt. Might as well play the shit out of Lawson.
Something about our offense or personnel puzzles us. Shocker
Maybe they didn't put him in because the offense is complex and he didn't grasp it yet. But, if the offense is that complicated, then why does it seem so simple to stop?
Now that's a good question!
VT sports does not get another cent from me until Whit cleans house on the football team, that was beyond fucking pathetic. And keeping motley in after he was obviously injured was criminal, loeffler and Beamer should be brought up on charges.
9 yards rushing. 100 total yards. Cold and afraid. Weak and timid. Zone read with fullback in two-minute offense. Defense pushed around up front. Players laughing at the end of the game. I feel like the term "sissy" isn't politically correct, but my vocab is failing me otherwise.
Wait who was laughing at the end of the game?
Saw #61 Chung laughing at something a Pitt player said.
I don't really have a problem with that. These are still kids in their early 20's at most. As someone who can find a bit of humor in pretty much any situation, I can understand the desire to smile even at the worst of times (and losing a football game is not even on the list of the worst of times).
i bet you wouldn't see someone on Saban's offensive line joking around after a performance like today's
This is the end of the Frank Beamer era.
At this point, anyone who thinks that Loeffler was even a decent hire is crazy. He has been nothing but a dumpster fire for this program. While Stinespring's offenses were by no means good, we at least had the ability to run between the tackles and were very limited in big mistakes like turnovers. I would take that any day of the week against what we have now.
With Loeffler there is no power running game, there are only sweeps and screens. The offensive line is Swiss cheese. Shane can't figure out who to play at RB. While the defense has certainly been worthy of criticism this year, when you hold an opponent to 276 yards and 17 points, you ought to win the game.
It is time for a culture change at Virginia Tech, and I think we need to clean the entire house this off-season.
Repeat after me: "I miss our Stinespring offense." That's how far we've fallen.
9 yards of rushing. Fire all offensive coaches!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stinespring's offense was as precise as fine tuned as a Swiss train wreck.
Today somebody needed to step up and swap out a slowed down McGlock, take out injured Motley, and quick switching out RBs. I think Loeffler needs to have some balls and make a couple easy decisions, but I don't think he's a worse option than Stiney.
No one is as bad as BS!
I'm not willing to blame Loeffler for the O-Line.
He inherited a dumpster fire there, and got burned when Jeff Grimes left after a year.
I agree about the bad situation he inherited, but he's had enough time to show that his offense is capable of being effectively consistently. When Lefty was introduced, he said that it was his priority to establish a power running game. 3 years later, he still hasn't done that.
He still doesn't have the personnel.
Swapping out the O-line coach after one year really killed his chances.
Even so, he should know his line is not up to par. Run some bootlegs, roll out Motley to give him more time. If you just tell him to sit in the pocket, he is just going to get blasted like he did today.
You have to play to the strengths of your team, and we seem to be playing into the weaknesses.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Why did we keep dropping Motley back?
For god's sake yes. We weren't even keeping a TE around to even chip a DE. They were pinning their ears back and wrecking Motley every play. But for whatever reason, we were complacent in leaving him in the pocket to get F**king destroyed.
This. A thousand times this.
Motley is a more mobile QB, why not roll him out and give him some easier throws moving away from pressure. When they sent him out for three straight drop backs resulting in two sacks, a drop and an apparent worsening of his injury sustained earlier in the game I felt bad for the kid. He was not put in a position to succeed and that is a management failure. On top of that, after he got destroyed on the last play of the game NOT ONE O-LINE PLAYER WENT TO SCRAPE HIM OFF THE FIELD!
You have got to be kidding me. Stadium stairs until their feet bleed for that bullshit. Absolutely disgusting and disheartening.
There are only two thoughts I have about Loeffler that are not negative.
1) Inherited a lot of bad. Charlie Strong did, too. Takes time. This might not be enough time, even if my patience has worn thin. All of our best offensive players are sophomores.
2) I've always heard that the offense will go the way Beamer wants it to go. I don't know this is fact, but I could imagine that Loeffler isn't being given the full reigns, especially with a Shane dragging the tailbacks down.
Side note, we have a big, athletic quarterback who can barely throw. He ran a wishbone in high school. We have a ton of running backs that can't get tough yards. Tell me again why we aren't running options like the Bryan Randall days?
Lefty is attempting to install a very complex NFL-style passing attack, and he simply does not have the personnel to do so. He puts a TON of pressure on his QBs with this offense, he has even said as much in the past. I don't think his offense is a good fit in college unless you have an elite OL, QB, and skill position talent. I agree that our personnel would suggest utilizing a different approach, but we're trying to force a square peg into a round hole. Playcalling is too conservative and predictable too.
Honestly i don't buy this whole "complex NFL offense" thing anymore. You could count on a sweep and qb draw basically every drive today. It might be complex for us somehow, but for other teams to defend it is quite easy.
This type of offense is not going to be successful unless you have an elite OL that can pass block and a very poised QB who can quickly read defenses and pick you apart through the air. I don't think we have either of those right now.
We've pretty much haven't had either of those in recent memory except maybe a senior Tyrod, so this was a horrendous hire if that's what it takes for him to be successful. We might want to try scheming for the team we have instead of trying to force something that isn't there for the 4th straight year.
Agree wholeheartedly. There are only a few teams in college football that recruit at a high enough level on offense to pull off what Loeffler wants to do. Is it a coincidence that he is a Michigan man? He's used to pro-style schemes and loads of talent on offense. We can't consistently recruit elite offensive talent to the level of Michigan back in the day.
Yeah. I still Like Lefty. He can recruit his nuts off and is an elite QB coach. Are there better OCs? Maybe... probably. But he's a hell of an asset if he can recruit like he has been with this staff and under the specter of Frank's sunset sail... Recruiting has been a dumpster fire at times but Lefty's one of the standouts.
I also think he's putting the offense on the field that his boss want put on the field.
So in other words, he's a yes man.
Ever worked directly for a CEO?
Eh i think his recruiting is pretty overblown too. Of the the 4 guys he's recruited here, none have really done much. Brewer (although i believe he would have been worlds better this year) was pretty bad last year. Ford transferred. Durkin got moved to TE. They apparently don't have enough confidence in Lawson to put him over a QB who's arm is hanging off at the end of a game. Not very awe-inspiring
That's an over-simplification if I've ever seen one.
This justification is hilarious to me. Answer me this one question: What offense or offensive coordinator in the nation would have a poor offense with elite QB play, elite skill position play and an elite offensive line? The fact he requires those all those things to have an effective offense speaks volumes of his competency as an offensive coordinator.
McMillian is the best performing RB we have - objectively this cannot be argued with, unless he is a liability in pass protection I don't see a valid reason for him to not get the majority of snaps at tailback. So incredibly frustrating to see McMillian make a great play, line up in position and then look over and trot off the field for another RB to come in. Unless he is gassed or not a fit for the next play he shouldn't come out. The same should go for any RB that is getting hot during a game and producing. If it's Edmunds or Colemen that's fine too. But none of those guys are getting any better splitting 20 carries three ways.
Plus, and I may be wrong, but it seems like McMillian is one of the only RBs to have productive receiving yards too. That's a nice wrinkle for a QB and OC to have in their toolkit. Coleman isn't beating anyone on a grab. Motley looked really comfortable throwing short passes to McMillian who could then freelance in space. So naturally we go away from that. Granted that was the Furman game but still...
Frustrating.
I want Dan Henning back.
I listened to Beamer's pregame speech. There was no fire whatsoever. It showed on the field today. We will be very lucky to make a bowl game. Things are bad and getting worse. The writing ia on the wall. I'm glad we have Whit as our AD. He will have some big decisions to make in a couple months. Might be time to clean house. I mean, Duke is the best team in the Fucking coastal and we are just happy to beat division 2 schools. I have lost all confidence in this staff. A down year or two is one thing but this is 4 straight seasons of digression....
Agreed. Absolutely zero fire from Beamer. Zero anything to be honest. He looked like a bewildered old man who had no idea what just happened. I love Coach Beamer to death and he's a class act, but the time has come. The ship has sailed. Defense again came through for us, but the offense sucked out there (again). Loeffler is a joke of an offensive coordinator. We'll be lucky if we make a bowl games guys...this is beyond bad.
How do you have a "stable of running backs" and not establish a power running game? Defense actually did their part to keep us in the game but we screwed the pooch on offense. You even get a FG block for a momentum change and have nothing to show for it. I hang this one on Loeffler more today than any of other coaches. We look and act like chumps out there.
How sad to see this happen yet again. We are not good. And who knows when we will be good? Nine yards of rushing. Seriously??
considering the personnel losses on that size of the ball, i think the defense did their job today. can't fault them for the loss.
Sunday AM follow-up:
I guess McFarling sees things much the same as I:
http://www.roanoke.com/sports/columns_and_blogs/columns/aaron_mcfarling/...
(Sorry for the long link-- still getting used to tablet!)
I'll be interested to see the changes. Was actually envious of Pitt lining up in I-formation and shoving it down our throats. Remember when we used to do that?
Beamer is smart enough to know that this is his last year, and he doesn't get to pick the next coach.
I don't know about his last year, but he's smart enough to know that certain shit isn't working.
FUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Correct
Is this a direct quote from the press box?
My only hope is that Beamer ends his career with his 13th consecutive victory against UVA
I think you mean the 12th.
Yes indeed.
...what happened to us, man
Let's go after Charlie Strong! ...He went to Texas for money, but he can win here. Don't reject it - take a sec to mull it over.
No. We don't need another loser, even if they do come at a discounted price. Spend the damn money or flush the program.
Strong is a good coach.
I think he'd be a good call.
What are you basing this on? He had a couple decent seasons with Teddy Bridgewater. Otherwise, he was mediocre at Lville in a conference almost as bad as the ACC.
During his four-year stint at Louisville, he led the Cardinals to a 37–15 record and reached a bowl game each season, including the 2013 Sugar Bowl.
You're going to bash him because of the conference he was in? He was in the SEC before that.
He was only an assistant in the SEC. I'm not "knocking" him. I'm just pointing out that before he had Bridgewater, he was 14-12 in a piss-poor conference.
Won as many BCS games as Beamer...
I was thinking the same thing, but I really think that his Texas team should be better than what they are now. TCU is a great team, but there is no reason for being blanked for almost the entire game while losing by 50.
Maybe. But I think we can do better. Worst case in our coaching search is Steve Addazio.
I like Charlie Strong. Think he could be a good fit with his recruiting ties on the East Coast, no nonsense approach. I keep hearing the name Rich Rod and if I had to pick between him and Charlie Strong, I'm on team Charlie.
If he gets fired from Texas maybe. But there's no way a guy leaves the most sought after coaching job in the country for Blacksburg.
We didn't run the ball, we were sweeping.
And some Pitt fellow was there waiting to clean up. Don't get the predictability.
100 yards of offense? I've seen VT do that to other teams, but I've never looked at a box score and seen the century mark for VTs offense before. Wow.
Losing Fuller and Brewer was like a game of operation. They removed our heart and left a fat, naked, hole filled team in its place.
That's because that hasn't happened to our offense since Beamer's FIRST GAME. That's inexcusable.
I'm tellin' you guys, if you look at other schools offense's, they look crisp, motivated, and focused. We sometimes looks like we're playing football in a jell-o mold. And also indecisive.
We should have been able to build on our past successes. Other schools who sucked for years, have surpassed us.
Beamer's apathy is becoming more and more visible to me.....sigh. It's time.
If he didn't have the fire to see this through, he should have left.
It seems to me he's trying to establish a line of succession. He can't stick around for everyone else.
Tech blows
At least I did not go to Texas, holy crap they are getting curb stomped!
what do you think our record would be if we had their schedule? might be winless (north texas is no gimme for this crew)
Beamer all but said "Young guys are going to play and get experience after watching other guys get beat time after time."
i.e. Lawson?
I miss the good ol' I-formation.
You know, the way Pitt lined up when they called a run play?
Yeah, I miss that. It looks like it still works sometimes.
But the pistol is so trendy!! /s
We don't even run THAT anymore. Everything is shotgun.
And don't forget the motion. Loeffler can't run a play without guys running 20 yard sprints sideways.
Lefty gas to buy time with trickery sweep BS to account for our O line laying down faster than the speed of light
Was our offensive line intentionally trying to do an impression of a f**king accordion? Motley is not the man to win a football game.
That's what I am checking this up to. That, and a coach who needs to smile into a camera as he respectfully steps down. Talk about a massive disappointment.
Was this a preseason game too?
Change is good.
I thought that was greed?
I feel for Motley.
It's difficult for any QB to survive with no line. Running Backs as well. They've got no holes.
Jeff Grimes is a genius who jumped a sinking ship. Just sayin.
Might as well add Aaron Moorehead in there as well
Yea, he played that pretty well.
The question is why he couldn't fix it, since the O-line is a big part of the problem.
I'm a large man, so going out on a limb probably isn't wise. But I'm going to assume that he felt he couldn't fix it for two reasons. Beamer. ACC vs SEC.
I believe we only took on Loeffler to get Grimes, that's why he was the running game coordinator.
I couldn't watch this game, it was blacked out on ESPN3/Watch ESPN for me.
From the way it sounded, we let up 10 points on Pitt's first two drives, then one more touchdown at the beginning of the third. Bud has always been susceptible to unexpected strategies. Once he adjusted in each half, no more points were scored. It sounded like Motuapuaka was heavily involved, Facyson had an impact, and Alexander was in on a lot of plays. This started to
looksound like a regular defense. This isn't worrying me too much. The offense, however, sounded like full-blooded ostrich cock.
I'M GLAD THE EXHIBITION SEASON DID US SO MUCH GOOD, FRANK.
Motu was the same old Motu other than 2 plays where he forced the fumbles. The vast majority of the game he was invisible and finding a way to get blocked rather than attacking the ball carriers.
Ehhhh, I thought he was better than that. I was more discouraged by the Dline. Where the hell has Dadi been this year?
Overrunning the QB in most cases.
I think our opponents are doing a really damn good job of sealing inside leverage with their tackles/TEs and forcing our DEs wide and deep, thus allowing plays up the middle because our ability to stuff the box has been flaky this year. Last year the QB or backs had nowhere to go up the middle, allowing Dadi and Ken to make their way around for a sack/TFL.
Motu did have a TFL or two, I think. Dadi too, unless I'm misremembering. DTs looked quite good.
Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with that reference. What is an ostrich cock (in this context)?
It's a boner I guess.
Substitute 'dumpster fire' or 'unmitigated disaster' if you'd like. That was my intent.
Excellent. Thanks! I'll be using that one.
The defense looked like shit. They had trouble stopping the run all day and without some timely drops by the Pitt receivers we aren't really in the game. Our lack of LB ability is glaring and our weakness at corner without Fuller is showing.
And the offense is on Frank. This is the 3rd playcaller he has had in 5 years and it still sucks. Loeffler was his last chance. It failed. Time is up, Frank
I wouldn't be surprised to hear him say the UVa game is the only one that matters anyway at this point...
To think, most of us were optimistic about this team being headed in the right direction prior to the season starting.
Nine rushing yards. Nine. yards. QB draws and jet sweeps have become the new screen pass. The Scot Loeffler hire has been a complete and total failure. Our offense is more predictable than Frank Beamer's post game speeches: "Well give credit to this Pitt team. They came in here and really got after it. Pat Narduzzi is a great coach, I have a lot of respect for him and what he's all about. You know, this is a young team and we missed a few opportunities out there that hurt us. We'll go back and look at the film and turn this thing around. There's still a lot of games to be played". Bullshit. I have the utmost love and respect for Frank. He has great character, runs a clean program and is Virginia Tech football, but enough is enough. Ultimately the head man has to be held accountable. Wins and losses don't lie. The coaches are out-schemed by the opposition every week. The talent we do have is mismanaged and/or underutilized. I will continue to watch and support my team until the day I'm in the ground but the program is mired in mediocrity and on life support. Whit has a tough decision but he needs to make it, I pray sooner than later. Our fans are the best in college sports and we deserve better. I miss the passion and pride that once defined our football program. Holding faith that Whit has his ducks in a row and will make the right decision at the right time.
Motley to his offensive line
He could have been a contender, instead of a bum.
Last drive looked like that scene in the Longest Yard where the O-line purposely let Adam Sandler's character get sacked over and over
Now that you mention that, the whole game looked like that.
Great reference. :(
I may not know a lot about football but wouldnt a tradition screen pass with our piss poor offense line help keep the LB honest after a while when they keep getting caught going full board down hill. What the hell are we doing with ALL ACC BUCKY DAMN HODGES, he isnt a hood ornament.
Or just let then in all game and kill what ever they hit. Great adjustment Dumbasses
Normally yes.
But Tech is the least successful RB Screen team I have ever seen. Ever. And I'm not being hyperbolic, I honestly have never seen a team with such a terrible record of running successful screens to their running backs as Tech has had the past three years. It defies logic and statistics. You'd think occasionally they'd have success. But no.
Are you meaning to say "team" instead of "RB screen team"?
Then screw the RB Screen. The TE release screen behind the MLB gap is very favorible for a 5 to 7 man rush in this case. We love pistol so all Motley has to do is take to snap all the pressure then dump off to a TE in the area the LB's depth. No thought other than using the other teams momentum against. Ford and our WR's streaking down feild to pull back the DB's help as well.
So true. He would have a one on one vs. a 5'9 DB and motley throws into triple coverage to ford.
That was a GOOOOOOOOOD shit I needed to take. Lmao!
Hype train more like just let me get home and far away from this shit train!
I think you mean:
Get a rope, we don't want to lose a $400 hand-cart
if you could photoshop Grimes and Moorehead into this, it would be absolutely perfect
Pretty sure it is the 5th Fullers part for his failure to deliver yet again on foerensics.... ;)
It makes no sense to play Pitt. I want them off the schedule just like ECU. Or I'll take a win if that isn't possible.
They're.......... in our division, so we have to?
My point actually being that I don't care who we play. Rather than complain about them, beat them. We might be grateful that the ECU's of the world will consider us a worthy opponent.
Gotcha, yes.
Anecdote warning:
I went and saw Eric Clapton years ago when he played in Chapel Hill.
As an amateur musician, I have listened to and studied Clapton's playing for years. So when he was touring and had a show near me, I had to go. I spent the weeks before going back through his extensive catalogue.
I was stoked as the date approached.
The concert sucked.
He was flat, the sound was horrible and the crowd left deeply disappointed.
I'm feeling the same way after watching the team play this season.
I'm actually kinda shocked. Seeing him is on my bucket list. Was he really that bad?
Same story with Bob Dylan for me...Last live concert I went to
how old was bob though haha? also was it before his late 90s revival or after?
That's why I never tried to get a ticket to the upcoming Paul McCartney concert up here.
I saw him about a million years ago, when he was geezing.
He was pretty good then.
What's the name of that song, "Going Through the Motions?" We can blame Eric Clapton then. This loss is all his fault, and Bob Dylan's a little.
Well, you can't blame that one on the refs. I thought the offense was terrible today, and the play calling, too. I know it was a limited playbook, but damn the jets sweeps weren't' working but one time maybe. We had no answer for the Pitt D and #5. Our D had it's bad moments (especially opening drive in 3rd), but were better than last week overall.
NINE YARDS RUSHING THE BALL. HOW IS ANYTHING ELSE CONSIDERED A POSITIVE!!!!!
Because nothing else other than the sack count was worse than that?
I thought it was 21 Jump Street. Not 21 jet "SWEEPS"
Loeffler would make an outstanding housekeeper in Casa Del Brady!!!
Remember when Lane Stadium was feared? Of all our failures, the death of that advantage and fan experience is as disappointing as anything.
Now I'M the one who fears it.
Remember during the 2013 season when they had the "Legends of Lane" series on Hokievision? When we lost to UMD, I was thinking, more like Legends of Lame!
Fuck this shit.
Sorry. Another round of my (2) fireball, bourbon, and beer just kicked in.
Go Tech (players)! Go (away) Tech coaches!
Looks like Frank took the old saying "leave it the way you found it" a little too seriously with the team
I'm not as pissed about this as I was about ECU. Shane and Scot ain't nothing but a couple of port o buddy derptards. Derp derp derp.
I have backed Beamer all the way back to the lean years; back when he was given an ultimatum and all of a sudden we were in bowl games. I continued to back him a few years back when he finally realized some changes needed to be made in the OC. Sound familiar. FSU fans felt the same way about Bowden - loved him, but that did not keep the program from slipping. Same with Penn State. It hurts to say it but after several years now of "hoping" to get in a bowl, it appears to me history is repeating itself at Tech. EVEN THE DEFENSE is not feared like it use to be. I am not sure I can bring myself to say a change must be made but I hope Coach Beamer will bring himself to recognize that his program is not improving and some changes are needed - even if it means removing himself. He is a fine man and he put Tech on the map. I just don't want to be taken off the map. Horrible performance all the way around today.
I really thought Frank would get next season. Without a massive turnaround in this season I think there will be a bunch of new faces on the VT sideline at Bristol
Same here. I thought next year would be his farewell tour. But not anymore. I don't see us winning more than 4 games this year and there's no way Whit will let that carry on.
Frankly, I want to see what Whit does in this type situation.
Beamer needs to live up to his word.
I hope it doesn't come to an ultimatum. I love CFB for what he has done in Blacksburg. He put us on the map. I want to see him go out on his own terms. I just hope he has sense enough to realize that this should be his last rodeo. Don't pull a Bobby Bowden, please. I want to see Frank at the games after he his no longer coach.
He has already pulled a bobby Bowden....
Not in the sense that he can still step down on his own terms. Like I said, I love Frank Beamer. But it would be foolish to want him to stay as the HC. He needs to step down and do it quickly or I have a feeling Whit will present him an ultimatum.
Looking at our remaining schedule, I am having a hard time finding 4 wins without being a huge homer.
We are watching the culmination of the slow decline of this program over the last few years. I love Frank, but at this rate we are going to end this season with no bowl, losing donors and fan support, and not much in terms of talent development or recruiting prospects to look forward to. And that's if this ends up being his last. From what I have seen another year of this would be the nightmare scenario in terms of is getting back to relevance anytime soon.
What high end head coaching candidate wants to walk into that?
What's sad is that we have beasts like Ford and Bucky, then good young talent like McMillan who are not able to reach their potential due to poor play calling.
These boys deserve better than this team and the staff.
It's weird because I'm usually super pissed after losses. But today. Meh. I'm way more disappointed with the coaching staff. Holy shit. "Let's keep Motley in the pocket with no TEs to protect him, because the offensive line is doing so good today." /s..... I don't think you could have asked more from the D. they gave up 17 points. If we only give up 17, I expect to win. But not after today. Damn pathetic play calling and coaching.
What are the positives today? Bud did adjust some when I thought he wouldn't. Alexander will be good. Chuck Clarke had his moments. Fascyon started to wake up. The D-Line also had some stellar moments. The O, well, help me out other than Motley is tough and despite the playcalling tried admirably..
11-13 in non-exhibition games since 2012.
Whit is announcing construction plans this afternoon to make changes to Beamer Way...
...it will only be 100 yards long and run east to west.
If today was an indication, should only be 9 yards.
funny.
Then sad
Then funny.
Remember when we used to not have vent threads?
No.
Our problems really surfaced with the
retirement of Coach Cavanaugh. He was the head recruiter and had our LBs playing at a high level.
We have recruited well the past couple seasons. It was the 3 or 4 before the last 3 or so that are really hurting us now.
Recruiting well?
The recruiting hasn't been awful like it was during the Newsome era, but the staff is still consistently whiffing on its fist, second, and even third choices... even when there's an 'in.'
Yeah, but Cav was scared of the Internet. He earned that reassignment.
Can we have a TKP press person ask Shane this week why he never lets a back get in a rhythm? And if he skirts the question, ask him again.
he might just punch you with a glove on a stick
Offense was just inexcusable today. I mean if we had the offense that we had in a monsoon last week we would have murdered Pitt. D did there part and played well for the most part but a few plays got them. However they had no support from the offense. Any time the defense came up with a big stop or a turnover the offense decided to go backwards. I mean nothing. Just embarrassing. 100 yds on one of the worst rushing defenses????
We always do this and I said it in another thread before the game that since they have a shit run d means they will come in and look like they have a top 10 run d. Only we make teams look better than they are. Shane just needs to go. Tired of jet sweeps.
Btw GT is running all over UNC.
Thanks for everything Frank. I hope you can still be involved in the athletic department. It will be interesting to see who Whit will hire as new HC this winter.
So...who thinks we're going to a bowl game this year?
Yeah I do. Remember, NCSU just lost to louisville at home. Miami just lost to Cincy. Bc has no qb.
We will beat NCSU. We will go to a bowl game.
You want a real kicker? Indiana is having their way with Ohio State by just pounding the ball up the middle
Well, with the way our defense has been playing lately, maybe OSU's offense really wasn't that good after all. There's still a lot of time left for them to find their way against IU, but it's really mind boggling how much they are struggling to get some rhythm on offense these last few games. They are winning on just talent alone right now; they better get in gear when they start playing the tougher teams on their schedule.
I didn't get a chance to actually watch the game since I was preoccupied. I'm glad I did after reading all the texts , looking at the box score, and recaps not too long ago I would have been extremely angry and pissed off.
I bought into the hype in the preseason. I thought year three was going to be the one where the team finally turns around. Loeffler has his people, had time to implement a system, and we had the productive freshmen back. And nope. Didn't happen.
Beamer hasn't adjusted and from what I've heard there is no drive to this team anymore and that's been trending the past few seasons. That's on the coach. He needs to step down because it's not that we're just running in place we're going backwards.
I didn't get to watch the game due to some family obligations and frankly, I'm glad I spent my time more constructively.
There really is no defending Scott Loeffler anymore
He's fucking garbage. This is is what...third year?
I don't want to hear shit about "oh. He just needs the players that HE recruits"
Bullshit. Scott is a bullshit, shitty, fucking OC and play caller. Get him out of Blacksburg.
He's garbage.
Pure unadulterated garbage.
And he was hand picked by Frank....
Scott may be bad, but the real problem is our head coach
You guys have no idea how heart breaking this was for me to write.
But he just need players that HE recruits..../s
I think that's a bit harsh.
I don't know what the issue was today, but VT seemed to have nothing at all that would work.
I was a little upset on the play calling especially towards the end of the game. What happened to the five and ten yard corner patterns? We went deep on first down, ran the fullback on second down and went deep on third down again. There was enough time to run some under routes and move down the field slowly. Also those short under routes don't have Motley waiting around to air the ball out when the OL was getting owned.
Harsh? SL didn't exactly come into VT a winner. Just ask any auburn fan.
I'm pretty upset, but I guess it could always be worse. A player from Texas retweeted a tweet about transferring during halftime when they were getting stomped. http://deadspin.com/texas-player-tweets-about-transferring-during-halfti...
So, was this another exhibition game, or....? Love you Beamer, it's been a great ride, but like I've been saying for the past 3 years, it's time for you to go (and please don't forget to take Shane with you). I sat nearly 4 hours in the rain watching this crap. Waste of my Saturday.
How was that for you and the other 35K that was there? Pretty poor turnout for our first "real" game of the year.
The west stands were MAYBE at 25%. Lucky it didn't really rain after kickoff.
I was actually embarrassed when they were talking up our entrance and then panned to the north end zone when we were coming out. Might have been 40% full, which show how much the student body thinks of this program right now.
I've always known north to be the students that don't give a shit about the team or game, just the experience. Those fans aren't going to a rainy noon game.
Yeah. I've noticed that as well. I always sit in the East Stands and most people were pretty interested in the game. No one around me today sat down during any point of the game and were cheering basically the whole game despite the terrible showing.
I was there in North. Wanted to punch these 4 or 5 students in front of me who were fucking balling up pages from their programs and chucking them at random people. Shocker: they left after the first quarter when they didn't have any more programs to throw. Fuck those guys.
But there were people in NEZ that cared, I can assure you of that.
EDIT: If this looks like I'm being whiny/defensive/whatever, that's not how it was meant. I was extremely disappointed with the turnout. There were literally 10 people in my section. But those 10 all stood throughout the game and cheered their hearts out.
But, seriously, fuck the guys that were throwing paper balls.
From where I was in the West, it looked like the West stands had more people than the East. NEZ and SEZ were empty.
It was pretty pathetic. Our season tickets (which we may or may not be purchasing next year) are in the SEZ and we were about midways up and there were no people behind us. Probably the least amount of people I've ever seen at a game. And if I'm not mistaken, I think I even heard the crowd boo at multiple points. I'm windburnt and wet and pretty unhappy. Hopefully this margarita at El Gran Rodeo can fix all my problems.
Edit: Yeah, the student section was absolutely pitiful today. It wasn't full and most were sitting.
Man, I'm sorry to hear about your shitty experience. But thanks for representing
Yeah our students can shut up about not getting a great deal ticket wise after today. Pathetic showing for kids who can walk across the street and enter the stadium for free. We looked like a basketball school today
I'm not sure what kind of deal would convince the masses to watch the product we are currently putting out on the field, especially if there is any excuse available like today's weather.
I think by students, you mean freshmen. I have to catch a bus over to campus and then walk to Lane (in this case, today had to walk over from Torg). Most upperclassmen have the same problem too, as we don't live close enough to campus for it to be a "quick walk across the street." Weather certainly played a factor with people wanting to come to the game too, but my point was that not everybody lives that close to the stadium.
Eh, I think the longest "commute" by a student attending Blacksburg campus is still shorter than the average alumni commute.
I don't mean to downplay the effort required for anyone to attend, but I think it's not asking much for students who want to be there, to be there. Operative word there is "want".
The real issue at play is the product on the field. And that lies at the feet of the coaching staff.
Taking the bright side, Ford looked like he was playing to make the NFL today. He was blocking at a pro level and beat his guy deep several times
Too bad we only threw it to him twice.....
You are forgetting the ball Motley threw into triple coverage were we grateful when it fell to the ground.
This must be what it feels like to be a UVA fan.....
No UVA has accepted their team sucks. We keep on to hope that things will get better "NEXT YEAR"
I'm running out of hope :((((((
As for the game itself, I'm not upset. This is what I've come to expect from our program, Maybe THAT should upset me, but here we are
Was on another VT site and people were calling for Whit to be fired too. I want Frank gone, but it is ridiculous to call for Whit to be fired already when all he did was get a big time basketball coach and appears to be set to go after a big time football coach too.
Do people on here really think Whit should be fired?
Those people sound grossly misinformed. Whit is the best thing in the Athletic Department right now.
Whit had no problem doing a swift reboot of the basketball program. Getting rid of an icon like Frank is always going to be tough for an AD but I trust him to realize this can't go on another year and do what's necessary.
But will he act before it's too late?
God I pray he does.
I'm sorry but if you're calling for Whit to be fired then you're a moron. He's done nothing but good things for this program. This is what, year 2 for him?? Maybe Sands should be removed to?? Perhaps we should kick out half of the students who don't show up to the games or throw paper airplanes like 10 year olds at games. Frankly I'd much rather see them go than Whit. And who would these people like to replace Whit with??? Please let me know their top candidates for AD. Retarded. I expect Whit to make an awesome hire to replace Frank whenever that happens.
PS I know you didn't say you think whit should be removed and my passion is directed at you. Just the thought of those people who wish it.
Agreed. I wouldn't want any other AD than Whit at the moment for the situation that we are in.
but really thats a really stupid comment by them
Hey I think the RB rotation got 25 yards today!
9.
The last two games demonstrate how soft this team has become. That comes from the top down. Whit needs to shake thing up.
Now to watch some physical football being played in the rain and dream of the future.
Our team is so bad I'm sitting here watching the Bama game thinking to myself that I wouldn't mind the Kiffin offense.
Ugh
Clearly the answer to keep rotating backbacks
FUCKING MOTHERFUCKER FUCK
I went to this game. I sat in the stands, cold, wet, and probably due to lack of better judgment, somewhat hopeful.
Burn it down. The defense actually came to play but this team is overall soft. Loeffler is a useless OC, and Beamer doesn't have it anymore. You cannot be upset with the attendance today when the team is providing this type of experience. Frank and co. are running this program into the ground now.
Bud and his guys did well I thought. Everything else was a mess. Motley isn't good enough, even if he had any semblance of blocking. Shane has failed as a coach and his running backs are reflecting that. You could SEE the frustration in Isiah Ford's face near the end of the game. We won't get recruits like him anymore with this staff.
Frank Beamer needs to step away (he should have already). As grateful as I was we finally got rid of Newsome, Frank replaced him with his RB counterpart, Shane Beamer. I'm sure Shane is s great person but he is an awful coach.
Loeffler is a heck of a QB coach, but is out of his element at OC. Bud Foster is supposed to be the bright spot on this staff, but he is facing the consequences for not paying attention to recruiting until it was too late.
We need new blood in this football program, I'd like for Bud to stay on as coordinator, but getting a new head coach is more important than him staying at this point.
I'll never stop cheering for the Hokies, but it is more than disheartening to see how far this program has fallen. We used to be very good on the verge of great, and now we are average on the verge of awful.
Thought it would be appropriate to post this here
That goat video is perfect for this occasion
Strike that comment. Mixture of mostly alcohol, anger, apathy and unmerciful humor.
Come on, man
Am I missing context on why there are so many downvotes here? This doesn't seem any worse than our hatin' on threads.
Stupid, pointless noise that he has previously been asked not to post.
Nah, he's mostly correct. It was me just screwing around but kinda overdoing it in my state of pure inebriation. I struck it.
I don't know exactly what the plan of action should be following today. But any movement shouldn't, and probably won't, be a reaction to today's loss.
I hope, at the very least, Whit has some conversations with coach Beamer and begins to outline a strategy that will honor him for his amazing work here at VT and in the world of college football.
I also hope that conversation involves a strategy to move this program into the future so that VT will not be in a complete and total 'rebuild' situation when Beamer does leave/retire.
It's difficult to think about how it wasn't that long ago that we expected to see a great hard hitting D, a disciplined squad and a mean O-line when we watched VT football. Now we see a very undisciplined, somewhat soft and very confused looking squad (on both sides of the ball). As much as it pains me to watch this train wreck that is VT football, it pains me even more to think of how the 'big whistle' must feel as he stands on the sideline and watches the same thing.
Go Hokies!
It's getting to the point where I care less about Frank's feelings and more on the long term viability of the football program.
We are at a spot right now where we legitimately might severely damage our ability to quickly rebound after the change. The longer this goes on the further we venture from Bowden and closer to what Mack Brown did to Texas. That happens here and we may never recover.
I don't think we need to wait for the end of the season to hire our next HC. We need to announce a new coach and give them time to bring in some recruits this year. Let's not get behind another year in the recruiting game. Love FB and all he's done and stands for but its over. Thanks for the memories!!
I agree.
It's time.
You don't get a "victory lap" in football coaching unless you have some victories.
Wasn't this the year that Loeffler and Searels would have this offense clicking?
I think Loeffler has shown improvement, hell, I don't know how much of this is really on Beamer Jr, I think this whole tale of woe comes down to the O-line.
Technically it was Loeffler and Grimes. And the better half of that package left
I was willing to give Loeffler a pass for the first two seasons. He did, after all, come into a pretty big mess. It's mind boggling, however, just how inept our running game is considering we've spent 3 years trying, supposedly, to improve that part of this offense
good to know i can commiserate with my fellow Hokies here. so many emotions have run through my head after watching our disappointing game that i feel kinda numb right now.
i love everything Coach Beamer and company have done for the program throughout the years but as a former business student, when something's not working to its full potential like its supposed to, you go out and fix it. i hope AD Whitcock "fixes" our football program very soon.
So the post game vent is "A THING" now? How sad. I have nothing more to add to this discussion. Never thought we would end up here
I'm sure a lot of us didn't.
Call it a "vent thread", or call it "therapy".
But I don't see it going away soon.
