Starting QB against the Pack?

Not knowing the extent of Motley's injury makes this hard to speculate but who do you think will start Friday? It seems like Motley has lost the O-line and maybe the locker room after he was not helped up off the field, and Brewer is still rehabbing so he is not a likely possibility. So who is next, Lawson or Durkin? I would say baptism by fire for Lawson, since he has been touted as our QB of the future and we have already burned his redshirt I say get the kid in there and lets see what he has got. If nothing else he is large and can take a few lumps that the o-line seems to feel our qb's need this season...

Motley is the QB. When Brewer is healthy, he will return.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

Motley starts. But I have a feeling we're going to start seeing a lot more of Lawson rotated in this week. Brewer takes over for Motley when he's ready.

Won't Brewer be back before then?

Things can not get much worse play Lawson. Too soon for Brewer & Motley seems hurt and needs to recover. Loffler needs to get Lawson proficient with 10 plays and play him, as you said his redshirt is gone.

Whenever fans say things can't get much worse...that usually means they can.

This offense had 9 net rushing yards & gained less than 100 yds with 8 qb sacks & to many qb hurries to count. How can things get worse , without injuries?

georgebd

8 yards, 9 sacks.

Trust me- it could get worse. Lawson wasn't running away from those pressures any more than Motley was. If Lawson was quicker with his reads and more accurate, he would already be playing.

Greatly respect your observations & analysis , however I will just let the record of 2/8 during the last 10 games at lane against p5 teams speak for itself. ( one of these wins was against doormat UVA)

georgebd

How does that record speak to Lawson starting? If he isn't ready then all it will do is ensure that record moves to 2-9.

Would you like Prys with that?

Well based on that record, its a lot more likely that moves to 2-9 regardless of whose starting so why not give it a shot?

Agree. Lawson is clearly not the best option, maybe not even second best and everyone wants him to play because he was a high rated recruit. You dont just throw a freshman to the wolves on a team that is not very good just because he can play a little bit, especially if it has been evident that he is not ready to take the full load. It was a mistake to burn his shirt anyway, see Vick vs Curry

There are a bunch of numbers lower than 28pts & 13 pts...and a bunch of numbers higher than losing by 7 and 4.

Just ask Texas...

Still, in the grand scheme a loss is still a loss , whether by 7 or 35 . Would not put much credence in the " loss by only 4 to Pitt" as I recall they ran out the clock inside our 30 yd line. And any objective observer seeing the way this team was playing knew this game was over at the start of the 2 nd half. A 6/6 record is just a 6/6 record no matter how it is accomplished. I am not into moral victories.

georgebd

Over at the start of the 2nd half? I bet your a blast to watch games with.

I also remember us trying to convert a 4th and long inside our own 30 instead of punting the ball away like we would have done if the last series was taking place earlier in the game when Pitt wouldn't be in a position to take a knee and run out the clock.

I think that many of us are already expecting 6-6 at best, and less than that wouldn't exactly be shocking or much worse overall.

Personally, I'm expecting 9-3

Yeah.... Sun Bowl. Just sayin'.

Durkin at QB, Peoples at FB, and Sam Rogers at RB. Run the I Formation down their throat and knock the piss out of who ever is in their way, OLine and all.

My thinking behind this: Oline sucks so quick 2 punch push RB already has ball, Still can do read option, Sam or Durkin can throw the ball. Running downhill and most importantly, clock management. even if we dont score everytime, we drain the clock and let our #PunterSwag pin them deep.

All this hinges on someone locking Shane in the restroom before the game! Or telling him the game is actually Saturday at Noon!!

This is the best idea I have heard all day, especially the locking shane in the bathroom part. Only think I would add would be to lock Loeffler in there with him...

I'd rather see them lock Loeffler in the bathroom and put Frank in the press box to call the plays. I assume he could call offensive plays. He is a football genius, right? As for Shane, leave him on the sidelines to celebrate with the players after touchdowns should we get any. But don't let him have anything to do with decisions because God forbid we hurt anyone's feelings.

Lock Shane, Lefty, and maybe Searles in the bathroom after last week. Wander around the athletic complex until we find an old, dusty copy of the Rickey Bustle playbook. Let Frank, Stiney, or maybe even Max Warner call some plays. Heavy dose of I-Formation running and option plays.

I think "Which combination of coaches would you lock in the bathroom on Friday?" could be a thread of its own.

I say lock them in the bathroom after I've offloaded the prior night's hashbrowns that were covered in chili, as well as a couple of Taco Bell burritos.

After I've egressed the bathroom of course.

Searles wasn't even coaching last week, Stiney took over. Just lock Shane out.

This one of three packages I wanted to see at beginning of the season...I've been unimpressed with the usage of our true "packages" even if the playcalling is about as good as we could hope with RB-merry-go-round in town. The other two? 3TEs-FB-RB Pro set...can go 4 wide, or smash-mouth. 2TEs-2WRs-Motley Pro set, with one receiver to the wide side, and both TEs, motion other WR into back-field at snap and run the read-option and throw-pass option.

I want to see Lawson. I would not be adverse to continuing with Motley. I don't expect to see Brewer yet.

I think even if Brewer is cleared, he really shouldn't play in this game. The guy hasn't taken a hit since the one that knocked him out against OSU. I'm all aboard the Lawson train, good or bad.

I think with the way the O-line is right now, there's no way that Brewer could get through four quarters without taking a huge, huge hit.

I thought it was mentioned by the commentators during the Pitt game that Brewer has a meeting with the doc today to determine his return date. Not sure he'll be ready yet, though. I think Motley starts as I haven't seen anything about his injury status.

My only issue is, If this line got Brewer hurt by the call of a wrong shift at the line during a pre-snap. And now Motley was beat down last weekend. How does bringing in a young inexperienced QB behind this O-line make it better? Some QBs have been ruined from being put in situations like these. Is this supposed to teach Lawson how to dip, duck and dodge??? Heck, how is Brewer supposed to come back and trust this same line to protect him when making throws after all, this is the same group that got him hurt once again? Our O-line shouldn't be opening up for a DL or LB to tee off on our QB. That should never happen!!!!!!

Our OC needs to protect the QB better with quick drops and safe plays. yeah, it's predictable and a bit boring but with a true freshman taking snaps (assuming this is what happens) it's the best way to go (if we don't want to get another QB hurt, that is). if he feels running a more complex scheme, all the better. hope the D wins the game for us, though it's probably unlikely.

I agree quick drops would help the QB or any QB when being rushed liked that, but that's not what protects a QB... A fully-functional Offensive Line is what protects a QB. A coordinator can help a QB out by giving him easier throws to make, but not protecting him, that has to come from upfront. When playing a young or raw QB with bad line play can really stunt a QB's growth especially a QB that's trying to learn to throw from the pocket. It develops trust issues with the line. To be honest could anyone that's on the team, or anyone stand in the pocket and go through there progressions knowing your head is going to be taken off in a matter of 3 seconds after you've just got the ball in your hands from SHOTGUN? Yea I'd start holding onto the ball and bracing for contact myself or locking onto a wide out as well.

Not to mention I don't think Motley had time to take 2 steps before he had guys on him against Pitt. Quick drops don't help when the dlinemen are still faster to get to you.

Sam Rogers. He plays so well that he stays the starter and wins the Heisman.

Given our putrid showing we got permission to deploy the Sambot this way. May he have mercy on them.

I'm going out on a ledge and saying it will be Brewer. That dudes a dude. He will want to play in most likely his last prime-time night college game opportunity. I'm sure his mind is focused on plays. We know he's kept his throwing motion sharp. The only question is his durability with healed injury underneath the pads. He was the starter for obvious reason and he has been cleared by medical staff. If I were him, the risk of re-injury does not drop significantly between now and the end of the season (speculation) and the future is now for his season.

He's no good to me dead.

I agree. At 0-1 in conf play, a win Friday can salvage the season and give his final year of eligibility a lot more significance. I'm all for not rushing players back, but if he is cleared and sharp enough, he will play. He really doesn't have a lot to lose. After the State game, the season could very well be half way over if we don't make the ACCCG or a bowl, so why would he wait?
