Hey, Miami...
It's funny, but probably not the classiest moment in college sports.
Not at all.
A turkey leg for you sir
Man, we had some skill on that b-ball team.
Number of fans in the stadium? Blimps in the sky? 2015 record over the Hokies :(
Nobody there to tell him he can't.
The Little Donut had the tools to be a great player in college. Even if he was a bit undersized, his biggest failing was between the ears. A shame really,
Wearing the white helmets again!

I guess it wasn't the helmets, after all.
Wishing I were in Miami today, but watching from home will have to do. Let's Go...
Hokies!!
via GIPHY
Lee Corso picked us over Miami.
Kiss of death.
Is it just me, or has Lee Corso seemed to have slowed a lot this year? When I've watched a few times this season, he has moments where he is slow, takes long pauses, and often jumbles sentences together.
Well, the guy is 80 years old and had a stroke a few years ago.
His reasoning- He, Spurrier, and and his friend Frank Beamer are all members of the same organization......
AARP!
Already on beer number 2, figure if I can't remember the game it is all good...
For good or for bad, they keep records of game results.
Someone always has to be a Debbie downer...
Anyone know if Brewer is playing today?
Anyone know of a good site that I can watch the game, that works on a government computer?
Can you not log into the direct live feed on the NSA feed?
What directorate are you in? Just left I
Here's to a little punters swag today.
Here's to hoping we don't punt and the kickoffs go for touchbacks.
That actually seems like a LOT of punter swag
just got in and see Piit/GT tied at the half......anybody watch the first half & can tell what's happened?......VT really could use a GT win here
Seemed like both defenses slept during film study. Looks like Pitt didn't know that GT runs the triple option and GT didn't know that Boyd is breaking all of Pitt's receiving records.
THIS
Also this
edit: Brewer seems ready to play today
Isaiah Ford casually doing Isaiah Ford things in warm-ups.
I see the crowd is already there.
Should be Odell Jr. Jr.
Brewer on the field dressed for warm-ups!
I just woke up two hours ago and I'm still hungover. Time to crack open another beer because it's gameday. Go Hokies.
Beamer's wearing the white windbreaker. Here we go.
Not ideal for stopping the run
...and they say we have attendance problems.
That's pathetic
Not surprising when stadium is 25 miles from campus.
Why does that matter to where the alumni and fans live? Hokie fans live mostly in NOVA and Tidewater that travel 5 plus hours to get to the games.
Students live on campus.
So on campus would add 5,000 fans ( that's if half of the undergrads showed up) a drop in the bucket.
Rose Bowl is farther from UCLA's campus and they don't let it look that empty.
I really wish Michigan state - Michigan weren't playing at the same time as us.
Did you guys hear the commentary on Beamer's job status? I have to say, I disagree...
Certainly a bit of a muddled point about coaches deserving to "go out on their own terms" when including Bowden and Brown in that list...
Both those guys won national titles BTW
Or a & m bammer
Motley starting, Brewer cleared and available.
Can't do much about that. Just a good catch
As anyone compare the kickoff touchback rate to previous years? It seems like almost everyone is a touchback.
good hold D, good to see getting pressure a bit
Nice, good D.
Let's see what you got offense.
Please come out fired up
Ugh, Stroman...
Stroman scares me!!!
Good keep by Motley
Get ready for the Jet Sweep!!!
These Miami unis are giving me cancer.
Welp.
smh
wow, come on Monty
Shit
Umm WTF
U gotta be kidding me with that.
Need some stickum.
Dang man
FUCK!!!
I appreciate the crowd panover that featured all 6 Miami fans celebrating.
Can we credit our offense with scoring a TD for at least one of the teams?
Well, poop.
All that hype about Motley's 3 TDs last week sure didn't last very long.
Do we see Brewer today?
Medically cleared, Loeffler confirmed they expect him to play.
We kinda led a touchdown drive.
Dust it off and regroup.
For real? Ugh.
Man, you would think Miami is playing Miami with this broadcast
Nice to see our kickoff returner go.
Would anybody else give a testicle to see Stroman stick his foot in the ground and turn it up field, just once?
Keep doing your thing McMillan
yeah travon!
Up the field
That was some good protection
I think Hosges was out.
He needs to be aware of where he is. Had plenty of room to stay off the sideline.
Still so very happy with the running back change.
Aww, really? We just gave you a touchdown, why can't you give us the throw?
We got lucky with that call there.
Danny Coale just threw his remote threw his TV with the reminder of Sugar Bowl
That was a dumb throw.
Motley don't do that to me!
They misse a face mask on motley when he was tackled.
Soooo Brewer or......
#1 for Miami blasts Ford before the catch. That's PI.
They put a hit on Bucky before the ball came, too.
Why Motley, Why
Motley is struggling today...
I am screaming. This is ridiculous.
If Brewer is healthy, he needs to be in this game 10 minutes ago.
Dude's knee is out of bounds.
obvious PI
That play just kills me. Horrible decision to throw the pass, but while the commentators and officials are looking at the replay for an interception, there's no mention of Hodges and Ford being knocked to the ground while the ball is in the air. Is there a rule I don't know about that says pass interference is legal for bad passes? It's a joke that the announers didn't mention the PI going on with that play.
The commentary guy is killing me. Praising Miami's D for Motley's Derp.
Seemed to me like there were a lot of VT players being tackled before the ball was anywhere close, but what do I know?
Wow I know there is a lot of bodies but Ford was blatantly knocked out of play
How was there no PI in that scrum?
Really poor decision.
..but these refs man
We dodged a bullet there.
Motley dodged a bullet.
These announcers might as well be sucking Miami's dick.
Motley is playing really bad football today.
Ohio State Motley is playing today...
Motley vs. a decent defense, that is.
Motley dropped a pass on the money to Hodges against this good defense. He's made one bad decision and had a ball slip out of his hand. Let's not overstate the case against him.
I think he's had 3 very bad plays out of like... what, less than a dozen total? Including run plays?
I think I'm stating exactly what needs to be.
I have a sad :(
Standing in the pocket too long.
You mean like one second? RT got destroyed on that play
Biggest knock on Motley is his pocket awareness.
which is ashamed, because the protection has been strong
Please tell me #12 suited up...it's time for him to get in there
anybody have a watch espn log in? I dont have cable!
http://www.stream2watch.co/sports/football/virginia-tech-vs-miami-florida-live-stream-october-17
Lets go D
Lost opportunity there. We need to capitalize on those and that play calling inside the 20 was weak. Where was a fade to Bucky??
Are our slow starts a product of the offense being based on movement and deception? We run plays to judge tendencies then adjust and that's the reason for productivity later. I hope that's it anyway.
On pace for more points than last year's game against Da U.
Hansen got blown up on that play
Settle down Big Lu.
Dadi does realize this isn't touch football, right?
I'm very frustrated.
Can't tackle, what the hell
Make the stop
I held my breath on that one
Eh, at least it wasn't a touchdown.
Technically, we dodged a bullet with them only getting a field goal...
Dodged a major bullet. That Off. PI was completely unnecessary and did not have an effect on the play.
Lots of holes in DBU so far, not sure why Motu is in coverage so much because he's not quick enough. Again, lucky with how things are going down. Holding them to a FG there is big. Offense needs to get something going that doesn't involve me worrying about Motley and turnovers.
Every time he touches the football I get worried...
Can we please see some I formation and pound the rock?
Why does it feel like every week the same teams use the same plays to score on us. So Luther Maddy already has a false start, Motley has whiffed the ball, now we just need Tellar with an unsportsmanlike penalty, a bad pass interference call on us, missed kick before the game is over. That is now VT football these days. Same story different weekend.
Missed kicks haven't been that bad this year other than really long ones.
Just give the ball to Tre and get out of his way!
Happy Travon is getting the carries and having success but it makes me shake my head every time like...why did it take the coaches/Shane so long to figure that out?
McMillian came to ball today.
Omg. A WR screen with actual blocking.
Right?!?
McMillan, I love you.
The modified hurry up seems to be making Miami a little confused.
Wait, we're moving smoothly all the sudden? I'm not complaining, but surprised.
Offense...looking...competent?
Travon is killin it
#teamtravon
YES!
Some option? Interesting
Miami seems to prefer throwing on 3rd downs unless the yardage is short. Can we get a pick please!?!
Touchdown Travon McMillan!!! Go Hokies!!!
I LOVE YOU, TRAVON! YOU'RE MY NEW #MCM
#MCM?
Man Crush Monday.
Nice.
HOLY SHIT WHAT A DRIVE!
LOVINthis option offense!
Nice drive. I loved the DB complaining about blocking before the catch on the Ford screens. DB needs to learn the rules when the pass is behind the line of scrimmage.
That's what happens when you don't swap backs out. That was a great drive by everyone.
(Technically, McMillan and Rogers swapped out more than once) But, yea - let's keep it with McMillan and Rogers.
A balanced offensive drive? Who are we anymore?
That was sweeeeet. Was that our offense? It is so nice to see one back running the ball. It took long enough to figure it out.
Never mind, that worked. Great drive, go hokies!
Just turned on game to see the last drive. WOW that was impressive in so many ways! Please give me more of this!!!!
Speed option wut?
Great blocking by the WRs on that drive. I love it
Is it just me, or is Yearby a fucking beast?
WR screens that have WR's blocking? and WE get the first downs?
Y'all Travon had 46 yds rushing in the first qtr...
An early observation is that Motu is missing tackles again. Filling well, but not finishing.
Mot to T-Mac! Gotta love it
Tackling would be a super addition to our defensive scheme.
Where did our pass rush go the last two drives? Calling pass rush, line 1.
I'm surprised how little pressure we are getting on Kaaya considering what I've been reading about Miamis O-line
He is getting rid of the ball quickly for the most part on those slants. We have gotten some pressure but no sacks yet on the longer drops
Slants are killing us. That and we need to get pressure on kaaya
That's the thing right there.
We haven't got any pressure on Brad
Tricking sacksburg shirt.......tiem to light this lid up
Looks like dadi's hand still bothering him pretty bad
The back and forth scoring dos not fill me with hope.
Does more than last years scoring
I agree the offense is better but I want to see the defense step up.
I agree with VTblackout.
Much better than last year.
Motley looks hesitant to tuck and run
Bah Ford. That hold wasn't even necessary to get the 1st
That was a really ticky tacky call though. And a drive killer.
Why didn't Cam dive for that ball!!
Cant let Kaaya pick us apart here
Dude. Way to jinx it.
We've held them to third a lot we just need to hold them on third down. If Motely's fumble is the difference that is going to be very frustrating
Coley is absolutely killing us. I'm missing Kendall badly today.
Its not just coley, its anyone in the slot. Chuck clark is getting beat like a rented mule.
I'm not sure I see much improvement in Motley's field presence/awareness. He's either standing in the pocket too long or when he's flushed he acts like the defense is going to give up on the play.
EDIT: why did Travon not touch the football at all that last series?
Because that would make too much sense.
Ahhh...I knew I was missing something. Rational thinking from our coaching staff. Thanks!
Is it just me or do these announcers love them some Miami.
I'm not hearing anything too upsetting. They are the better team right now anyways.
The way they talk about Miami is irking me. Their tone when they talk about Miami is excited with elevated volume. When they talk about Tech it's very even keeled.
They can't seem to holler about Miami enough. My off color post above sums it up well.
DBU is getting worked today
Whoever is covering the slot receiver (chuck clark most plays) is just getting worked.
It's tough when we're bringing the house on Kaaya and getting absolutely no pressure. Our pass rush is pathetic right now.
Motu just went all Superman on the last couple of plays for us.
His last tackle was huge!
We needed it, too.
These announcers have no life. 25 yard pass for us and they are barely speaking.
Exactly. But when Miami has a good play they're literally yelling.
McGlock at LG and Nigman at LT. No Teller this drive
He got beat pretty bad at least one time if not more.
Teller has been getting smoked on a the few plays I've watched the oline. Probably happening more.
Looked like to me Phillips had the first. Made VT do it the hard way.
Closing out the half with some points, even just a FG, and getting the ball back to start the 3rd qtr with some momentum would be huge.
Looks like Osterloh is up.
Why is it game days my three girls decide it's time to reenact WWE moves!!!
Just have them run some Oklahoma drill. That'll wear them out.
The offensive line is making me uncomfortable.
We got away with a big hold there
Yea that was pretty obvious
Am I being biased or did Ford get pushed down?
Yes
*From 3 hours ago* I'm a typical USAF computer. Gamcast is ok, but hell I'd rather listen to game also. Any other good websites to keep good track of the game?
I wonder what it would be like if motley had time to get a second read???
He had time on that third down and actually had a guy open in the middle of the field, but he was locked in on his right. The protection isn't great, but his vision is poor as well.
3.6 seconds.
It should be gone in that amount of time.
Motley isn't seeing the field well at all.
That really fooled them on the kick off.
Fight, fight, fight! Just kidding, don't...
Is coach Searles down there at Coral Gables, FL or did his back act up again?
He is there, he tweeted out a photo of his daughter meeting him there from her college.
(Is there a reason the site is taking so long to update/refresh). By the way Defense seems to be over the ball.
Dadi with the play straight out of the lebron James playbook
I'm going to nominate Dadi for an Emmy.
JFC
Dadi pulling a "Bielema"...
Unbelievable.
You've got to be shitting me...
Come the F on!! Pay attention.
Fucking penalties. Killing us ever gotdamn week
What the fuck is wrong with this team and the penalties? Sloppy undisciplined bullshit. Unacceptable. Coaches need to get that shit under control!
This team has been undisciplined for years now
We have no depth, because of this we can't discipline players by sitting them, the only thing that really works. If there are no consequences, and no players behind pushing for playing time, then what is the impetus for change?
Way to self destruct D
Love how this defense just fucking quit on 3rd and 20 and the made an extra push on the roughing. Love that Dadi has some fire but he has been somewhat worthless this year
Bud get your guys in the game.
This team is an embarrassment now
They gave up and assumed the half was over. Miami is going to score a TD here.
Called it.
I'm slowly coming to the realization that we don't have any elite players on the d-line. We get no pressure unless we blitz. Elite d-lines do not need blitzes to apply pressure.
Wow, those T.O.s we took are really biting us in the A$$....
Way to go Baron. Totally ridiculous. Playing a decent game and then the guy does that.
Should have gone into the half tied at 13.
Instead, Miami
has a chance toscored.Glad we called time outs when Miami was ready to end the half. We must want the U to keep Golden /s
Calling timeouts was the right call. Without that offsides Miami was sitting deep in their own territory.
Agree 100%. It was another undisciplined offsides, and Kaaya did the smart thing (a la Aaron Rodgers) and took a free shot deep. And their WR mad a nice catch.
It's all on the DL penalties.
I want a better performance from the d line I the second half
Oh, and you've got to be fucking kidding me
That touchdown brought to you by the VT coaching staff.
Bullshit. Calling timeouts is aggressive, the aggressive type of gameplay fans have wanted to see from Frank and Co.
Frank's in a no-win here. No TO's and it's classic, passive Frank and everyone wants to see some fire. Calls the TO's and he's doing something stupid. If we don't jump offsides there, good chance we get the ball with at least :30 close to mid-field.
You don't call time-outs when (1) it's an away game, (2) Miami still has timeouts, (3) the game is tied, AND you spotted the home team 7 points, and (4) you get the ball after the half.
I'm all about bullish, but cerebral is always more important than bullish
And up until that boneheaded offsides, it worked. I didn't agree with the TOs, but to be honest Frank very nearly (and certainly should have) gotten the results he wanted. 3rd and 20, the defense has to be able to make a stop there.
3rd and 20 is a good reason to call a timeout. I do agree with that, so that would be a counter reason. But, after the tackle on first down, there should not have been a timeout. The second timeout was more worthy.
See, you're confusing me with this "everyone" character. Frank lets time run out and I'm happy. In fact, I nearly got up to make some food when the drive started because I expected that to be the course of events.
Nevertheless, the real issue here is how we still have the same discipline issues we had week 1.
We also want to see some actual coaching from Frank Beamer. There was none there to close the half.
The coaches failed miserably there at the end, TOs or no. And they still had one to stop the bleeding did they not?
So what's their excuse for a consistent lack of discipline this season? How about the fact that Travon didn't see the field the drive after he ran all over the U? There is a major problem here and it starts at the top.
that was stupid. I kept screaming to just let the time run out. It was a lose lose, even if we stop them and force a punt Stroman for -12 yards on the PR won't help.
Can someone explain to me Beamer's thought process on taking those timeouts? Miami was content with running the ball and taking the tie to halftime. But we instead stop the clock for them, give them plenty of time to think about it, and basically just gave them a TD before half. Really, really stupid.
I was screaming at my tv when we were calling those.
Beamer is a bad game time coach these days. Why be surprised?
He was taking lessons from TimeCop.
And if Beamer doesn't call the TOs, people will call him too conservative when we have an opportunity to do something. It wasn't stupid, Edmunds gave up a play but it is a risk that was working perfectly for the first few plays of it.
Exactly. Calling the timeouts and a stop gives us the ball around the 50!
You can't take them with you, a terrible penalty and lucky jump ball.
I guess that is one of the five plays Loeffler is always talking about!
I'll only disagree with the "lucky" comment. Their WR made a play. Our DB did not. That simple.
We will agree to disagree. The receiver juggled the ball between his hands, legs, defenders hands, a unicorn, ibis, hokiebird, and finally caught the ball. Lol
I was okay with those calls. It was aggressive, the defense just completely shit the bed,
Fuck this worthless defense. Quitters all of them. This game just ended
A down vote. Did they or did they not all stop playing on that 3rd and 20...and then for the rest of the drive?
VT is not going to win this ballgame
I gave you back a leg because I appreciate your realism...I mean pessimism.
I also plussed you up. You have a right to an opinion.
I'll claim the downvote. To call the entire defense quiters because of one play is the real embarrassment. We are talking about kids who are busting their tails out there and when they expected the penalty, the DL got confused and didn't give the effort we usually see but Edmunds was right with the WR and the guy made a circus catch. Calling them quiters is a fucking joke.
There were several more plays after that one where they could have done...anything.
But instead they got a needless/stupid 15 yard roughing call. And then Frank left a TO up on the board when it was clear he D was in trouble
One play of confusion and the entire defense is full of quiters and we might as well not play the 2nd half...
Stupid posts like this is why I am getting tired of coming to this site during games.
Did Miami score a TD on the play you mentioned?
No, they did not. But the defense got chewed up again after it and made another terrible penalty.
D.B.U.... Never mind..............
Why on earth were we calling those timeouts when Kaaya has been killing us all game!
I think that drive may very well come back to haunt us, depending on how our first drive in the 3rd quarter goes...
Well, that drive builds confidence for the 2nd half.
Defense completely fucked us over on that drive.
We need to drop 11 in coverage. Because our pass rush is less than zero.
The Miami WRs are just better than our DBs. Plain and simlle.
And that's your 2015 Virginia Tech Hokies folks...
That TD IS ON BARON. The coaching staff has got to get a handle on the penalties.
Wow, that was the definition of unacceptable on every level.
Beamer played the aggressive move and called the TOs before the half. Came back and bit us but I like the aggressiveness. Lots of ball left in this game.
I think it was more boneheaded than aggressive. Even if we did get the ball back, what are we realistically going to do with it in 25-35 secs? We get the ball start of the second half. No reason at all to do that, and we gave Kaaya and Miami time to score on us before the half.
Agreed. I was screaming at my tv when we were calling those timeouts. Kaaya has been killing us all game. If they're choosing to not use him then take it as a gift. So frustrating.
You can be sure he won't do that again this year.
You can be sure he won't do that again
thisnext year.Coaches out thinking themselves! This is tiresome!!!
Defeat from the jaws of victory.
Wow. Garbage.
Stupid time out by tech kinda glad Miami made them pay for it Just stupid.
So, are the announcers pulling for Miami,....... or against VT?
All of the above. I may have to find Laaser on the radio via mobile app.
The Kaaya lovefest is nauseating.
DBU
Born 2015 - Died 2015.
We hardly knew ye.
Even with the timeouts, it was 3rd and 20 from the shadow of Miami's goaline. That was pure lazy, undisciplined effort by the defense.
Never call time out when you are on the road and the other team is content with running the clock out. WTF!!!!!!!!!
AND you get the ball at half-time. AND you gave the other team 7 points and tied at half-time.
So Dumb.
There are not words.
There are words, but they're not to be used in polite company.
Oh there are! They just aren't appropriate for the kiddo's ears.
As my wife reminded me as Miami scored....
Those TOs before the half are right up there with that nifty fake punt play by Beamer from the Sugar Bowl. Terrible game management.
It's third and 20 from their own 10. That was a great call. Let them run out 3rd down, punt and see if you can get a cheap field goal before halftime. Zero problems with that. Woody Baron single handedly throwing the game away with 2 moronic penalties is unacceptable.
That's fine but we were calling those TO's before the penalty that pushed them back. I'm fine with it after the penalty but before was just silly.
Except the could have run out the clock if we hadn't called the TOs before the penalty. So there's that as well.
Hindsight is pretty amazing, isn't it?
Both TOs occurred before the penalty.
And what did you know, they got Miami backed up on 3rd and forever and still had a timeout and time on the clock. The TOs worked. The defense didn't execute, but that doesn't mean the TOs didn't work.
I am not the one arguing about the TOs.
I am arguing about our defense forgetting how to play again
False start was on 1st down, taking them to 1st and 15.
If Woody played for me, I'd tell him to take off his pads and get on the plane. His season is over until he can learn to stay onsides. Completely unacceptable. Two boneheaded plays completely turned that game. All day, Tech has shown they're going to do just enough to lose the game. They'll play well at times, but we're not winning this one.
Onsides, and let go of the QB when he throws the ball.
Can't blame the coaches. I've never seen Wiles tell him to do that.
Now that's funny right there.
I've heard this too many times from our coaching staff this year.
Can't blame the coaches for the horrendous undisciplined nature this team has played with for a few seasons now?
That's funny, I thought that was something the coaches were supposed to work on
Respondeat superior
Learn this term, and you will know the Supervisor IS ALWAYS responsible for an employees work (granted, as long as it with in the line of work).
If they are going to call that then they should have called Miami for it on the near interception on our second drive at the goal line.
Why aren't you mentioning Luther? He has been offsides twice. He was the one that was actually offsides on the play where Miami dropped the bomb. Baron is the only player on the d-line that has reliably gotten to the qb all season. The d is C+ at best. I think it's time that we reevaluate expectations for this team.
Luther has been his own brand of infuriating. And yes, at 3-3 and gifting points, it may be time.
Maybe my negativity inspired them.
It's just now time?? Haha
Utter Lack of Discipline and Stupidity:
Time Outs
Quitting on Offsides play
Roughing the passer
VT will have a hard time winning, when they give 14 points to Miami.
14 gifted points... nice.
If the game keeps up I don't think we win. Miami is getting all kinds of pressure on Motely and we aren't even sniffing kaaya with their "horrible" OL
We won't win this one. We will find a way to do just enough to lose.
We already have.
So... the O spots them 7 to start the half, and the D spots them 7 to end it.
This is me right now:
Not the coaches' fault Woody is jumping offsides on 3rd and 20.
^ This
Those TO were aggressive play calling, Miami just had a penalty back themselves deep into their own side, Tech has come close to blocking more kicks than I have seen in a few years. I liked the TO's.
Without the penalties, it would have been fine.
That might make sense if:
1. The VT offense was on a roll and could score quickly. The previous possessions the VT offense didn't get many big plays and seemed to lose the momentum it had in the 1st quarter.
2. There was more than 30 seconds on the clock when VT got the ball back. By the time miami ran 3 plays and the punt was fair caught it would only be about 30 seconds left with the ball maybe around the VT 40 yd line. Again, with that little time you have to be able to score quickly and execute the hurry-up offense perfectly. One bad pass by Motely and it could be a pick 6.
Pittsburgh over Ga Tech. That loss is really going to come back and bite us, even if VT can pull it out over Miami.
If we beat Miami, by the laws of the ACC we must lose to GT.
Anyone see Dadi and Deon Clarke get into it on that last drive?
Whaddupwitdat?
We are undisciplined and unfocused.
Remember when that was Miami?
If we were focused and disciplined this team could be good (not great but good).
Frank needs to change shoes at half...because he lost one in someone's arse.
This is true.
You guys have fun chatting on here. I am out. The constant pessimism in a game that we can easily still win is more frustrating to see than our mistakes on the field. Reading this thread, you would think these 18-22 year old kids couldn't do something right to save your life.
Yeah, that's about how I feel right now.
You are right.
In retrospect, I am very satisfied over our play as a whole.
Well, bye
Look -- anyone who's a fan would be upset with how we allowed 7 cheap points to end that half. And, it is pretty clear to anyone who watched that those 7 points are pretty squarely on an undisciplined DL. I'm not upset at the TO calls by CFB. I am very upset at the many offsides our DL committed that half. Those are drive-sustainers and will get you beat in a game where you are otherwise evenly matched.
Pessimism? I am sorry people are saying things you don't like hearing about our reality right now
But we are not a good football team, from the coaches on down. I am not quite sure how many exhibits you need to prove that
What we witnessed at the end of the half displays the culture that Frank Beamer has allowed to flourish in the past few years.
Gee, that's exactly how I feel about the coaching staff.
One positive is that parking will be easier next week at the Lane! #1999seemssolongago
I miss when the ESPN just played music & showed random pictures of female soccer games during commercial breaks.
Dude.
That sounds like a complaint.
Please stop.
/s
Has the league changed? It's still 10 guys...
Also, based on Quantico commercials, the FBI chooses their female recruits based solely on cup size.
Oh, and fox catcher.
Bad decision... just can't do that.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. We were moving the ball, there was no need to make a throw like that...
Funny. I thought hands to the face (motley) was a penalty. Guess I was wrong.
Dude, McMillian is trippin over his own two blurry feet! Kid gonna be a stud.
What the fuck Motley...
Man, that was just fucking stupid
So... Brewer healthy today?
He has been forcing throws all game and it finally caught up to him. I like the guys heart but he has had happy feet and slow through progressions all game
Oh boy...
Please bench Motley. For all his good plays he is constantly making poor decisions.
We should just run the ball every play...
Get Motley the heck out of there. Put Rogers at QB. I DON't care who. Fed up with this second class football. Running the ball and then throw it away.
Mook, you gotta catch that. Help your team out, please
Little OT: but what is up with our punt returns? We don't rush (which is fine), but stand up and let the coverage team run right past us. Seems like we should either go for the block or sprint back to set up a return. We kinda do neither.
Motley has shown the ability to run the option which I don't think we could do with Brewer...next season, with McMillian just a sophomore, we either need a new playbook or a guy (Lawson?) that could combine Brewer's throwing talents and Motley's running talents.
We're going to have to lean on McMillian to win this game. Guy is playing great. Eighty-eight yards on 11 carries with an 8 ypc average. Showing why he is the starting back now. Motley just isn't seeing the field and doesn't have good pocket presence right now. I guess Brewer wasn't cleared to go again.
better stop running that option with Travon. it's working way too well
On a good note McMillan already has 100 yds rushing
Wow, a Cline spotting!
Give it to McMillan every play.
100 yard rusher!!
?facemask
Wild cat bull crap
So we are running over Miami, let's just keep running and body punch their defense.
This is where Lefty usually gets in trouble...he over thinks it.
I see what you mean.....
Excuse me....
REALLY A SCREEN PLAY! COME ON!!!
Please make a smart decision on this play, Motley... *coughcoughmcmilliancoughcough*
Edit: not like that...
As frustrating as this game has been with us basically giving them 14 points we are only down a td with plenty of game left.
VT is still in this.
Great blocking....Not.
Why are there so many cars in parking lot at SunLife? Looks like the lot is full and about 3,000 people in the stadium.
They all drove their own car.
As well as that of a friend, apparently.
I had the same thought.
Maybe they are all Uber drivers in-waiting.
What is that screen? Make a block Hokies!
Why not just take the makeable field goal?
No guts, no glory, I guess.
...going for it on 4th and 4? I dunno man, Brad's been killing us. I say pin em deep.
Needs more screens
So people get mad when "Field goal Frank" takes the FG instead of going for it and now people are questioning him maybe going for it. Which is it?
I don't think it was a terrible call. I guess it seems that the field goal was more manageable with the additional 5 yards.
Maybe... different people had those thoughts... maybe.
Totally situational. In most instances, I agree with taking the points. In some instances, it does make sense to go for it and we don't. But given Motley's play today, Miami's play today, and Slye's leg, going for it with a pass, on 4th and 4, only down one score, with a quarter and a half left, makes precisely zero sense.
The 5 yards changed thinking, but a bad play call.
I hear ya, but on 4th and FOUR?
Miami really hasn't shown an ability to stop us north/south. So the smart play call is to go east/west. I has confused.
Rogers couldn't get his arms up!!!
PI but terrible play call. Run the damn option with Travon!
Call me pessimistic, but I'm 90% sure we are going to lose.
Given how things have gone for three years now... We don't blame you
How is that not a PI on Miami. It was the same play called on FAYSCON earlier.
Really Fayscon got called for that same thing earlier this game!!
A sack. A sack. A sack. omg!!!
Looking at the thread a number of folks are irritated with the negative comments. I've been guilty myself. Quite honestly been playing better than I expected particularly being away. We just keep beating ourselves. Why can one player like Rogers never get a penalty but others can't even get the count right or wants to show their manhood by silly and costly penalties (Baron).
That's the 2nd clear PI not called on Miami today. The first in the endzone on our first scoring drive where Ford was clearly hit in the endzone. At least our D showed up that series.
WHY DOES GREG STROMAL KEEP GOING BACKWARDS ON PUNT RETURNS!!!
Come on Mato. Hit him anywhere but the legs and he probably fumbles.
You must not be watching the same game, he has fair caught one and the last one he was moving forward and got hit as soon as he touched the ball.
I really wish Stroman would figure that it's not always a good decision to run backwards...
Run the ball...
Stroman is horrible and doesn't deserve to punt return
How is that not a horse Collar?
Why don't we continue to run the ball. Lefty is still hung up on passing plays.
That sucks, but I'll give Motley credit for trying.
McLaughlin is getting beat today
yeah running that TE out is a great 2-18 call
Welp...
I should turn the channel
Good Christ.
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
I give up. This is ridiculous. We suck.
best player on the field din't even touch the ball that series
Motley has to come out. He is STARING down his first read. Put in Brewer, run the ball and thrown good passes.
wow. we have a running back averaging 8 yds a carry and 3 straight passes?
He was closer to being down than Tyrod was in the Boise game when he got hosed with that call, but on my TV it sure looked like there was a solid inch between his knee and the deck.
He looked clearly down to me
Look at that, we're having a dispute about the video evidence. Call shoulda stood.
His knee was down. I hate that it was, but it was... No matter if it's our team or not, I'll call it like it is.
Dammit people, you're ruining my "refs are against us" narrative.
But in all seriousness, I try to be as objective as possible watching our guys. I thought it was close enough to not be "indisputable." But that's why the officials get paid to watch football, and I'm at home on my couch talking to you fine people.
Technically, you are having a dispute. The rest of us agree he was down :)
Let Miami score. Why not?
Please put Lawson in.
Motley needs to sit, it's time
I don't think that was for Malleck. It was underthrown to Hodges
The Savior?
"My only regret is that I have but one leg to give." -Nathan Hale, probably.
This is baffling to me. If he is ready to go in now, he was ready to go in to start the game. The only explanation I can think of is the success we've had on the option but we've haven't utilized it nearly enough for that to be the reason for playing Mot over Brew.
+1. Should not have taken 3 quarters to make this change if he was healthy.
It seems like this was "we really don't want to use him, but if we desperately need him, then we will"
Get Motley off the field. NOW
The r cover has his hand on Brandon's face mask the whole time...and its defensive Pi.
That was offensive PI. The receiver pushed Brandon.
Considering how the game has been called thus far, that was one of the worst calls I've ever seen.
Their WR had 31 by the facemask. Not much contact from our end, just didn't turn to look. Torrian's technique unfairly burned again.
I don't think I can watch any more of Motley at quarterback.
Is McMillian hurt? Did he piss off Shane? Did he quit? Was he abducted by aliens?
Why is he NOT TOUCHING THE BALL EVERY SERIES?
Instead we decided to hang our offense on a player who has turned the ball over three times today and never shown that he fully understands the offense or is capable of running it. I still have a hard time believing Lawson can't step and play at the same level or do better.
3 defenders just watch Walton run right between them.
I hate this.
So much for being in the game. Beating ourselves.
If the defense holds up, they deserve a medal on this one.
YES!
This is VT football
Effin moral victory.
We were just given a gift with that 3
Gotta give the defense credit for that one.
OHHH. That was the break we needed. Unlucky bounce to not get that. Good stand by the D.
Great stuff at the line, then a little luck. WE AIN'T DEAD YET.
/cries
/drinks
Why in the hell have we decided to try to have Motley be the playmaker in the offense today. He doesn't need to throw the ball 30+ times a game (which he is well on pace for). Just give the ball to Travon please
Another thing -- why do our DBs never seem to turn around to look for the ball? Feel like this has been asked before, but there have been countless pass interference calls simply because our guy doesn't turn around.
That's the technique Torrian teaches. French did a column on it. It's deadly when done correctly - read the eyes, put the hand up when the WR makes a move. If not executed perfectly, it's doom. Kind of like our entire defensive strategy.
I think it's the worst technique I've seen. A few times the ball has hit our guy in the back and they get the PI call when if he turned around, it would've been in his hands.
You could have saved some time just telling him it's called "Oh Shit" Technique.
Worked against anOSU last year. That was the first and last time it worked. Killed us against ECU and we would not go away from it.
That's how Torrian coaches em. It's been an abject disaster lately
Seems like they could use it selectively. Just sayin'.
Needs to change. I don't see anything about that being "deadly". The best that can happen is a pass breakup and the worst as we've seen a thousand times is a free 15 yards.
Seems pretty deadly to me...It's killed us time and time again.
brewer!!!!!!!
Keep giving it to McMillan PLEASE!
While he definitely is more experienced and might make smarter decisions, I honestly don't think having Brewer in the game is going to make much of a difference with us down 10 in the 4th quarter. Just keep giving it to McMillian, please.
If he's really healthy, he might pull it out.
Welp, that's what happens there....
Sorry, that was actually on the O-line, I'm just frustrated
Undisciplined. Unfocused. Wish we would stop sh!itting our pants.
Someone needs to make a video of that fumble and put funny music to it.
Benny Hill music would do it.
I think there were a couple of VT players who didn't touch that.
It must be hard to be a Hokie homer these days because this team stinks.
If Miami wasn't just as bad as us with penalties this would be ugly.
What a massive dick move
That was a real cheap shot by the Cane. He should be tossed!
Man if Cam could have bounced that down the sideline he woulda been gone.
Collarbone looks healthy!
Sure tested it there.
Brewer already taking hits for the team
Why the hell are we running Edmunds?
Seniority? Or maybe McMillian is tired from putting the team on his back?
Shane. Beamer.
Not only that, but that set effectively makes it a 3rd and 6. I'm not suggesting we sneak Brewer, but a FB dive would be a better call IMUEFO (In My Uneducated Football Opinion).
DAMN IT three run plays and Travon didn't get it once. Edmunds and Rogers are slow!!
They dont want to run McMillan because he's averaging 6.2 ypc.
Lol every Sam Rogers run looks the same, cuts it right back up the gut. I like it but it's funny.
Where is Travon?
And Edmunds dancing behind the line...
This team has no courage. You hit my injured qb illegally and it's going to fire me up. Not this bunch of pansies.
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. thinking the same thing. That was cheap and done for one reason.
Just like against Pitt where nobody got fired up after Motley got hit well after a whistle to blow the play dead
Why why why not do a sneak or hand to Rogers again
McMillian back under 100 yards on the game...
As much as I'd love to win out and have the cards fall perfectly so that we could get make a bowl game or get to the ACCCG, I honestly think not making it to a bowl game would be more effective in turning this program around. This program is a disaster. I know I'll probably regret saying that later, but I'm mad right now.
I've been saying that for some time. Tired of hearing about our consecutive bowl games - that we hardly deserve being in.
Yea I mean doesn't every other team have a double digit bowl streak!! It's crap, the atheltic dept talks about this streak that everyone has.
I've yet to see anything that makes me think Lofler knows what he's doing. If something works, he goes away from it. If it doesn't, he drains the well dry using it over and over again.
Stinespring used to do the same thing. Guess who sits next to Loeffler in the booth?
A Miami turnover would be good.
Good defensive drive! If the offense doesn't do anything on this drive, it's over.
I'm bummed out that punt went out of bounds. I wanted to see Stroman run backwards some more.
8:50 left. Need to have a little sense of urgency here. Last "drive" we huddled every time and got the line, did that hut thing and looked to sideline for a change.
HOW IN THE FUCKING FUCK IS THAT NOT UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS!?
Or an illegal block as it was 7 yards downfield and he dove right at his knees.
now don't use the whole damn play clock every down
But at least we have the battle of Bristol!!!
We can't wear them out
Wow.
WHAT THE FUCK PICK A QB
Rogers can't block!
You're wrong. Or alcohol is wrong. But someone responsible for this post is definitely wrong.
Not in space my friend. The eye in the sky doesn't lie.
Are you stinking serious?
Wow that play call with Motley was just dumb.
Lmao, got a good laugh outta me
BREWWWWWWWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This better stand.
Oh brewer :)
FOOOOOOOOORD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great catch, Ford!
Just imagine if we had been playing our best quarterback this entire game!!
THAT MY FRIENDS WAS GOOD ON SUNDAYS.
BREWER - FORD!!!!!
It makes sad and frustrated to think of what this season could have been with Brewer healthy.
So Brewer makes a gorgeous throw and we take him out so Motley can lose yards. Bring Brewer back in to throw a TD? Makes perfect sense to me.
I Know Right...!
Brewer getting the guys fired up on the sideline. His leadership is incredibly important right now.
Collarbone. Is. Healthy.
Miami definitely pounding on Brewer.
It's uncalled for, really.
Mayb it'll get this soft O-line mad.
Brewer's been in a couple of plays and he's already getting knocked around.
Didn't realize Ford was leading the conference in TD catches. Awesome.
Happy we scored. However, our coaches are confusing me.
It's a real ball game.
Now we need the defense to make another stand.
OL better start sticking up for Brewer. I am sick of watching the canes get up off of him without any of our hogs around
I think Brewer has a bionic shoulder. Getting nailed on that shoulder. MAN - what could have been.
Motley can obviously do things that Brewer can't do and Brewer can obviously do things that Motley can't do. Making that pass under that kind of pressure is something that Brewer can do and Motley (typically) can't do.
YOU FUCKING KIDDING? THAT WAS HOLDING
This game is making me sick of football in general. That was the definition of holding and nothing at all from the refs. Those obvious PI's on Miami in the first half? No calls. I'm too old and too tired of watching garbage officials.
Where the hell was the Holding call on DADI?
If Miami gets a touchdown this drive, it's over.
Why doesn't Dadi ever get holding calls?
Come on D
MISSED TACKLES GALORE. OH MY GOSH I'M LAUGHING.
Edit: Don't know why I have to be down-voted. You have to laugh to keep from crying with this team.
Evened you out. There are some folks on here today that don't want to accept reality at the moment
Why was Clarke on the ground not chasing the QB
I asked myself the same thing.
I saw that I was yelling at my tv for him to get up
Need another goal line stand.
Pathetic. Clark completely quit on that play.
EDIT: actually pretty typical for this team. As has been noted before - this entire team is soft. With the exception of Brewer and Mook. Mook brings the wood on every tackle.
Yeah. That might cost us an opportunity to win the game. That looked so....sad by him.
I think he was on the ground, and looking for his man, and just lost track of the play.
looked to me like he was sulking for some reason.
You're right and I recognize that. My problem is how slowly got up like it didn't matter. There was no fire to get up, find the football or his man and attack again.
I'm sure he didn't realize it, but he was in the position to make a play.
I'm also certain that Bud will be pointing that out to him.
Our D backs have been smoked all year. I know we miss Fuller but we use to have guys to fill in.
Well shit.
And this one is over.....smh
I watched a great ball game today with a great coach. In case you're wondering, it sure as hell isn't this one. Someone should tell Whit there's a good coach in Memphis. He prob. needs to sharpen his pencil though, ive got a feeling several ADs will have him on the phone soon.
If Brewer is as healthy as he appears to be, really begs the question why Motley was left in there to shit the bed for 3 quarters
oh well.
Man our DBs have gotten SMOKED today...and throughout the season.
Our secondary could not have been more overrated coming into this season. I know the Fuller injury hurt the unit, but all of them just rely on. getting away with face guarding.
Game over. Bye Coastal hopes
nice to see the D step up...
It's over. I hope we lose every other game. Might as well. Too many bad decisions by Motley. A couple bad coaching decisions (time-outs that should've never happened). It's just sad. I'm really sad that I even have to type this.
Even (gasp)...LOLUVA?
Yeah, let's make sure to beat UVA. That can be our bowl game. Start preparing for next year.
Wow these announcers have been so biased for Miami all game and now even come out and say Scott deserves to be a douche and taunt because of the "pressure" Miami is under...wow.
To a Russell Bowl Athletic victory!
If anyone can score now, it's bBrewer.
Well, BUDs defense costs us again. Can't make a stop when it matters. They better not show DBU on the big screen next week. They have not earned that label this year.
No defense for the defense, but 4 turnovers will get after ya!
The D hasn't been good, but the turnovers were devastating. On top of that, this still isn't a good football team.
those int's when we were driving and poised to score were just absolutely insurmountable. Huge, Huge, Huge errors.
No more excuses.
No more moral victories.
A win is a win, and a loss is a loss.
We can't keep making excuses. There needs to be change. There is no way we even win the ACC (the real season). We maybe make the "not so shitty cause we have a good fan base" bowl. There is no reason to keep the current regime. Everyone says the magical year for Beamer is 2016. If that is true, that's only one more year. We won't win a National Championship, Beamer has already made it clear that it's not his goal to do so. He leaves after that year, we have only prolonged rebuilding one more year.
I have not have a good season of football since I've started at Tech. I consider myself a pretty loyal and educated fan. One of the only things that help me get through the week is the hope of watching VT Football not drop a turd on the field. I always get a false sense of hope, to only be let down. I'm tired of being let down. I will continue to watch Tech play, I'll go to every home game I can, I'll continue to be let down. I just hope WB wises up and doesn't play nice, like Shane did for so long, and let FB retire with grace. I'll stand by this even if we win out, somehow win the ACC, and somehow win a BCS bowl. We need change, not only for the team but for the fan base. A change will at least give a new generation hope for 1-3 years, hopefully longer. I need some hope.
If FB goes, my hope is that Bud stays. The biggest issue is that we would lose what looks to be a good recruiting class. Frank goes, so do those players. The vultures would come in and clean us out. So, if we change coaches, expect 5-10 losing seasons.
Agreed:
:/
You take away the gift TD due to Motley's fumble and the TD at the end of 1st half and bam, we would be winning this game. Geez.
Yea moral victories...
(/sarcasm)
Dont do that to yourself. Good football teams dont do those things. We arent a good football team.
(Cough) sarcasm (/cough)
ouch
"We are just 5 plays away"............
Those five plays being the turnovers. I know there were only 4 but. Yeah.
Well
I think it was doomed by the freebie 7 at the very beginning.
Loeffler "those five plays"!
Announcers questioning why CFB didn't start Brewer......it's like they don't even realize he coached in NC in 1999 AND got VT the #BattleofBristol
#10Wins #BowlStreak
#RetirementParty
We were outplayed (and out-coached) by a team that has banners flying over their stadium calling for a regime change.
This exactly. Al Golden has done a terrible
Job at Miami and owns us these days.
So what's the goal now for the season?
I think even making a bowl game at this point is detrimental to the program as it guarantees that this coaching staff returns in my mind.
The team is soft, poorly coached, undisciplined, and that is not a brand new development. The coaching decisions keep going from bad to worse.
Let's just start preparing for next season. I mean, realistically. We can probably beat UVA. Maaaaaybe Boston College if we're lucky. I'm sick of paying money out of my own pocket and supporting this time and having to watch crappy games like this. I mean, I've got plans to go watch us get slaughtered by Duke next week. If I had not have made plans with my friends to go, I totally wouldn't. I'm a Hokie for life, but this program doesn't deserve my time or support right now.
Then stop paying and watching.
apathy is not the answer
I think the first step is to let Whit know.
I'm certain he's going to get the message.
The classic lazy response to WELL deserved frustration and criticism
There was no criticism. And the fact that she's been saying "I hope we lose every game" etc and then complains about paying and watching it. Just stop. We'll be here waiting for you when you come back.
I have a right to complain about paying for season tickets and watching lousy games since 2012. It's not a good experience. I'm not saying that because I want to stop watching (nor will I ever stop watching), I'm saying that because it's not fair that too many devoted fans have to deal with this simply because there are people trying to give this team and its coaches credit, loss after loss. It's time for the AD to step in. And yeah, I am saying that we deserve to lose other games this season. Maybe then changes will be made. That's clearly what it's going to take. I love winning just as much as anyone else, but if we were to win next week, we'd all be celebrating and forgetting how this feels and then go back and lose the next game. I'm just so tired of the mediocrity.
I'm tired of it too but I am not wishing that we lose every other game left in the schedule just to have a coaching change. As others in the comments below have said, even if there's an opening at VT, we probably won't end up with a hot coaching candidate like Memphis HC or PJ Fleck because we're not that attractive of a program anymore. So maybe a little success the rest of the year would be better for a coaching search. I'd rather us end up 8-4 than 3-9.
Ohio State was 6-6 before Urban Meyer. Michigan was 5-7 before Harbaugh (despite the loss earlier, he's doing a great thing there). I know those are not really a good examples to compare to our situation, because they're not, but the concept's there. Like those programs, our program has got a lot of history. I think we could definitely pick up a more attractive coach than Memphis' HC or PJ Fleck, for sure. And yeah, I'd love to have an 8-4 record, but I just don't see that happening. I don't see us beating Duke, BC, GT, UNC, and UVA. If that happens, that's great, but I don't see it. I want this season to make an impact on the future of the program and sloppily winning maybe 2 or 3 more games that we probably won't deserve to win and maybe getting to go to a mediocre bowl game isn't the way to do it for the long haul. That's not going to improve this program.
Our "history" is one national championship run that fell short and a series of 10 win seasons that didn't mean anything in the end because with all that and the conference titles, we still played like garbage in the big games. So really, there isn't much of a history and (even though you acknowledged this in your comment, I'm gonna say it) what history we do have is not as rich as OSU or Michigan.
Edit: Also I didn't say we would go undefeated the rest of the way, I said I'd rather it be that way than lose the rest.
Look at it this way, the more money you give now the more money Whit has to make an all-star hire. Thinking this has been what's getting me through lately.
Unfortunately we have a tough Duke team that is coming off a buy up next. It's gonna be tough to get enough wins for a bowl game this year.
We don't deserve one. Haven't for a couple of years. Going to a bowl use to mean something. Best thing would be to stay home over the holidays. Might get someone's attention.
Ok, so what are some positives from this game? I want to look at the bright side.
Brewer isn't broken anymore.
UVa is still on the schedule.
McMillian, when the coaches involve him in the offense, makes plays. We should've just kept feeding him. Put too much on Motley and he failed to produce.
McMillian looked pretty awesome. I think next year will be big for him.
Mcmillian looked good when we got some push up front and showed the ability to make people miss and get positive yards when the o-line was blown up.
McMillian looked like a beast and had over 109 yds
free 7 at the beginning of the game and bad decisions leading to turnovers throughout

This loss is squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff. Can anyone answer why brewer did not start if he was good enough to go in on the 4th? FOH man. Pathetic game managing yet again. If I hear any frank speak bullshit after this game I will lose my fucking shit. I cannot wait until tech talk live so Beamer can side step more questions. Your move, Whit.
Hard to win when the starting QB is staring down receivers, commits 3 TOs, and hasn't yet learned what a pump fake is.
This team's culture of being soft and giving up, rests squarely on the shoulders of Frank Beamer.
Edit: Add lack of discipline to the pile.
I didn't buy a DBU or Sacksburg shirt, but if I had they'd be outside in my fire pit engulfed in flames.
If you wear them now, people are just going to give you a confused look.
Where's the damn vent thread
The game thread IS the vent thread.
FIRE EVERYONE!!!! /s
I really want Torrian to stay. He is too valuable as a recruiter and he has a great defensive mind. We have such a young secondary that the blame can't be placed on them 100%.
Bud needs to change his scheme, as we cant cover ANY mobile quarterback. If he can change and actually show this in workouts and practice, then he should most definitely stay some more years.
Shane is valuable as a recruiter, not as a rb's coach. Not entirely sure how much of blame from the offense can be placed on him, as Loef ran the ball so few times. Atleast we gave Travor the primary role...
Memphis' head coach is looking like a great potential hire now. We just can't loose the chemistry and recruiting that our assistants have. A mass exodus would be detrimental to the program.
Sorry, but with the quality programs out there currently looking for a head coach, I don't see any way VT gets one of these wanted coaches (like the Memphis coach).
The sad truth is we are a middle of the road (maybe not even) ACC program whose best years are many years behind us.
I don't see VT competing well with the other programs looking for a new coach. That holds true whether it's this year or next.
Its really depressing, but you are probably right. We may need to find a diamond in the rough. Maybe our fanbase and great facilities are enough, its all about how we market and project ourselves into the future. We can either be dragged into the depths of irrelevance, or be catapulted into the realm of champions. I'm praying for the latter.
I'm really not trying to be negative, just a realist -- we have long-since been irrelevant as a program. I watch a lot of ESPN and listen to SiriusXM college football talk, and VT is completely irrelevant and has been the past 3-4 years. We are never discussed, outside of the OSU conversation the last 2 seasons.
It's sucks hard, but we are irrelevant nationally.
Completely agree. Considering the last time we won the ACC was 2010, we cannot expect anyone to hype us up after consistently bad seasons.
Excuse me, but Shane is insanely overrated as a recruiter. Last time I checked he's in charge of the Richmond area and we've whiffed time after time on Richmond guys since Shane has been here. Stinespring is our best recruiter, and that's sad, because he's not even that great.
So Please enlighten me as to why Beamer deserves to coach 1 more year GTFO with that bullshit.
According to the ESPN analysts before the game, people like Beamer and Bowden and Brown deserve to go out on their own terms. Smh.
The way he said it, I don't think he really meant that. He just needed something nice to say in the 30 seconds before going to the game, and didn't have time to get into that discussion.
Can't wait to hear the excuses/reasons. Why would you put Brewer in when you are desperate - knowing the defense is now coming after him. Practically asking him to do miracles in one quarter to make up for 3 shaky quarters. I am beginning to think the coaching staff is at wits end and just trying anything.
I picked a good year to cancel my cable.
The season is officially a bust. At this point we would need both Miami and Pitt to lose three games in conference, in addition to us winning the rest of the way. I don't think either of those happen. There are only two things left to do this season: make a bowl, and beat UVA.
Poor play by most of the team. The QB play was absolutely pitiful, the defense gave up way too many big plays. The defensive line didn't get a push at all this game. The offensive playcalling was baffling. You have McMillian getting 6.2 ypc and he only touches the ball 16 times. He should be getting 25+ carries per game. Subbing Motley in after Brewer showed up just telegraphs the play. It seems we can only run particular plays with particular personnel, which tells the defense exactly what we are doing.
At this point, the season is over. We have no chance of winning the Coastal. We need to start thinking about the future of this program. I think Lawson should be the starter going forward. At least build towards something for next season, because this one has been a failure.
I think we also need to start questioning our Strength and Conditioning program. Our players are getting gassed and pushed around way too much these days. Just look at the size difference between our D-line in 2006 and now in 2015:
2006
DE Orion Martin 6'2" 250lbs
DT Barry Booker 6'4" 280lbs
DT Carlton Powell 6'2" 294 lbs
DE Chris Ellis 6'5" 260 lbs
2015
DE Ken Ekanem 6'3" 248 lbs
DT Luther Maddy: 6'2" 283lbs
DT Corey Marshall: 6'2" 266lbs
DE Dadi Nicholas 6'3" 233lbs
In 2006 our average DE was 6'3.5" and 255lbs; today it's 6'3", but only 240.5 lbs. At the DT position we were 6'3" 287lbs; now the average is 6'2" and 274.5lbs. I understand that we are somewhat sacrificing size for speed, but take into account that Jason Worilds was 6'2" 262lbs when he played here. That's as big as Corey Marshall. Chris Ellis was bigger than Marshall and only slightly lighter. At some point you give up too much size, and I think we have hit that threshold. I am really eager to see what Tim Settle can do here, and honestly think that we should not have redshirted him. I wouldn't have been surprised to see him emerge as a starter at some point this season.
Lawson for sure. Burned his redshirt so better make up for it and get him as many reps as possible before next year. Motley is gutsy but not the future.
Really hate this downward trend for Hokie Football....going to be hard to return to relevance....I really like CFB......but I love my dad, and I still had to take his drivers license last year because he lost his ability to perform
EXTREMELY WELL PUT. This is the exact emaple i will use for the duration of the beamer should go debate (at least through the end of next season). Thank you sir, you are an artist and a master of words.
But also...im sorry for your father.
Tough call dude! I was relieved that my Dad made that decision on his own.
Yup...there that feeling again...the pain of loosing another game where we had plenty of chances to win...that is all on the coaches.
What kills me is our offense showed some great flashes out there to day. Trayvon looked good along with the o-line run blocking. The receivers looked good most of the game and were blocking great on the edges. We were mounting what looked to be great drives with some of the better play calling I have seen in a while just to see them derailed by mental mistakes, penalties, terrible decisions, and spurts of poor play calling. It's one thing to lose because the other team is just better than you but it's a whole other thing to lose like that.
Oh by the way that nice little ESPN stats and info tidbit at the end sufficiently depressed me. First time we have a losing record after 7 games since 1992.
No step forward this week at all just painful to watch...
#takeawayentersandman
That's been the only enjoyable part of Hokies football this year, and they even managed to screw it up once.
fair enough. here's a leg....
but the intensity of Metallica no longer matches the culture of this team. something by streisand seems more appropriate
"The withered leaves collect at my feet and the wing begins to moan.....Memory, all along in the moooonlight....I can dream of the old days. Life was beautiful then"
thus, the problem is not Enter Sandman, the problem is the football team. That's what needs to be adjusted
Dadi is not doing Dadi things. No depth at DE is not helping!
Yeah, where in the hell has Dooley been?
This is the official start of Beamer's swan song. He has been out coached nearly every game this season.
-Coach Loeffler consistently makes a mockery of our offense by avoiding the hot hand and placing WAY too much faith in Motley to do the right thing with the ball. Brewer was ready and should have started. I am confident Brewer could have beaten Ohio State if healthy, not due to Loef's calls, but due to the athleticism and chemistry between Brewer and Bucky, Cam, Isaiah.
-Bud can't adapt to change well either. The game of college football as a whole is moving towards pure-athlete mobile QBs. We have CONSISTENTLY been made fools of by qbs taking advantage of this.
As far as the players go, we still can't tackle in the backfield. I do not think we are soft. We just lack the intensity when we are behind.
-Dadi's yet to get back into form from last season. Maybe his hurt hand really is the cause of all the missed tackles
-we are severely missing Kendall in the secondary.
Kaaya is not a mobile QB at all.
Didn't mean to imply that he or all were. Nor was Cardale, but he ran for 99 on us.
We have a problem with mobile QBs as do most teams. That's why they are dangerous. I just don't know what the mobile QB comment was in reference to this game was.
yea Kaaya wasn't a factor in the running game, I'm just venting my frustrations, however accurate they may be.
I blame this loss on bad decisions and mistakes from Motley, our defense not showing up for big plays and missing too many tackles, and the coaching staff making a ton of wrong calls. But what will Beamer say? Give Miami credit. I'm sick of that. So, so, sick. Please hear us out Whit...
This just in...Loefler says "stop making the plays that lose games".
Beside not putting Brewer in earlier I felt this loss was on the players committing stupid penalties and spotting turnovers for Miami. The coaches and the players need more emotion! And play clean football!
Spotted them the ball on the 3, gave them a TD on a series in which we called a timeout right before the half, end up losing by 10. Awful
Such a sloppy effort today between turnovers and penalties. I really question why Brewer didn't start, but then he was when we needed rescuing from Motley staring down receivers and having no pocket presence for 3 quarters. We got away from running the ball (which we were doing well with Travon) because of ...reasons. This squad is not disciplined and is soft, there is no kind of fight in them and I think that's the most disappointing thing. I'll still watch the games, I'll still wear my maroon and orange, but this season is done. I'm numb right now...booze time stat.
Listening to Beamer's post game is painful!
Oops he said it... Four or five plays, yada yada yada!
You can tell coaching is so much by looking at Mumichigan. Harbaugh comes in and brings a demand and work ethic of his olayers (not that our don't work hard) and does a 180 with Michigan without even having a recruiting class of his own there. Michigan goes from the garbage can to being Michigan of old overnight with him.
I don't know what needs to happen but this was a frustrating loss mainly because of the 14 it's we helped Miami with and then lose by 10. As stated above if we get beat cause they are doing better things then ok. When we get beat cause we make stupid mistakes (including an unforced turnover at the 2) it's very frustrating
To those of you getting upset at negative comments...."lighten up Francis"....we're all Hokies, some of us are just upset at the current state of VT football... Just a fan forum, but I do think the key players here our complaints.... finally settle on one back....CFB said goal is always NC (only after Hokie Nation calls his hand for eternally seeking low lying fruit of ACC Coastal)..... Voice you concerns/praise/etc...I for one enjoy all the comments!
This, once again, was on the coaching staff. You pull Motley, put Brewer in, Brewer throws a 15ish yard pass then gets taken out and they call a terrible QB read play with Motley. Terrible. Also, Miami could not stop McMillian. I repeat, MIAMI COULD NOT STOP MCMILLIAN. Yet, he only had 16 attempts and we continued to throw the ball. This team is undisciplined with all of the pre-snap penalties. They don't show any emotion after positive plays, particularly on defense....I miss the Jimmy Williams', Vince Hall's, Brandon Flowers', and Chris Ellis' of the world. This coaching staff has become too comfortable, and as long as we've got ol' Frank roaming the sidelines like a clueless fucking deer in the head lights we'll always be "pretenders" and never become "contenders". Mr. Babcock, please make some moves.
* too comfortable
Yeah one of the times we stopped them on fourth the guys were just walking around like whatever
gave one away today
How many times was Bucky actually targeted? Not just game, but this whole season. Is he the greatest-most-NFL-ready-decoy in the NCAA or what?
OT but did anyone see the end of the Michigan Michigan st game??? Least we didn't lose like that....today (I know I know ecu years ago but not exactly the same)
Oh no, we stink again!!
Well, at least there's the Cubs to get us through this week. Wait. What? Did I really say that?
This game.....
Great meme, or greatest meme?
Now that a couple of hours has gone by, I can comment. This team is the verge of starting a huge spiral down caused by poor coaching, poor execution and poor play calling. I continue to support the VT program but they are trying my patience with this lack of innovation and motivation. I trust Bab will make the correct decision after the season is over but it is going to get a little more painful as the season progresses. Now, back to the bar for more cocktails. Have a good night all.
I certainly wouldn't want to see them start spiraling down.
Edit: This post written in 2011.
Oh hey guys. I had to stop watching and leave the house before the end of the game. Last thing I saw, we were tied at 13 a piece and they had a long 3rd down right before halftime. What'd I miss?
Nothing.
