Great news for the Hokies, especially on the heels of Jacob Park's Georgia offer.

It's gonna be tough to get him away from Oklahoma but at the same time I could see a kid not wanting to stay that close to home. At the same time, Blacksburg is pretty far away from Norman. At any rate, #goacc.
Except he doesn't have an offer from Oklahoma...
The kid's never once expressed reservations about playing far from home, plus his family has moved states at least twice during his h.s. career, so he's a little more used to moving than perhaps other kids might be. Bama is a much bigger threat than anyone else. Anyone know if he got the much-ballyhooed 'commitable offer' from St. Saban when he was on campus?
Maybe with UGA going after Park, Saban will think about Park too, leaving Cornwell to VT?
I like that he is going to visit VT for two days, and then hit up UT, then make a decision. I know that these kids have till Feb, but if I was highly touted, I would want to decide before my senior year to get it out of the way. I mean, I would take some trips and what not, but would not drag recruiting through a year that should be somewhat fun.
I do think, whatever decision he makes here soon (before end of June), it will help the other dominos start to fall into place.
As an athlete who was highly recruited out of high school, I can let you know how much fun this whole process can be. Coaches calling and texting, facebook messages from scores of fans, and even a few greenbacks from teams I wont mention. I waited up until the last day to sign just so I could have a few more fun trips and get special treatment from everyone. I dont blame these kids for milking this experience since they get fed like kings and paid when they visit unc and ohio state...ops, I let it slip. Im just glad I signed with such a great coach who was able to take my wall ball skills to the next level. Go Pritchard Dungeon Wall Ballers!
At the same time, if we land Park or Cornwell, we've taken care of the QB recruit for 2014.
I agree.
I'm trying to NOT get caught up in the recruiting minutiae; if we land Park or Cornwell, then I'm a happy man.
But......if Park goes UGA and Cornwell 'Bama.....I will be sad.
I would love to have one of the above, and Bucky in the stable with Leal once Logan graduates.....
Tuesday and Wednesday? Hmmmmmm. Me like.
if we want SEC type recruits, we have to recruit like the SEC
(disclaimer: sarcasm)
On a serious note I really hope this visit goes well improves our standing with him. #BEACHFLOW
I find it encouraging that he's spending two days here, too, but what makes me even more encouraged is that we get him late in his decision cycle.....we're fresh in his memory. It can't hurt that he's going to be there on a gorgeous day.
Also have 2015 4* Josh Sweat visiting. The tweet says Smith but he meant Sweat. We already offered him as a part of the Oscar Smith pipeline initiative.
Take him to The Homeplace!!!!
Anyone know how today went with Cornwell? His last 2 tweets offer no insight.
I have no real details but I have heard on other sites he is having a real good time.
I've been lurking for a while but decided to sign up today. Howdy all.
Greetings and salutations!
Seems like things are going well.
He did grow up a Colt's Fan:
The relationship with his future quarterback coach is important to Cornwell, as is the system. Cornwell is a good athlete for his size, but at 6'5 and 225 pounds, he is more of a pro-style passer than a dual-threat. Cornwell said he doesn't care about pro-style v. the spread, but wants a system to get him ready for the NFL.
The NFL is a big influence for Cornwell. He grew up a Colts fan, and attended Colts games for seven consecutive years, and patterns his game after some of the greats.
"I see myself as a combination of Ben Rothlesberger and Tom Brady, but of course Peyton Manning is my favorite."

I wouldn't mind seeing a combination of Ben Rothlesberger and Tom Brady leading the Hokies one day...
Lets just hope Cornwell "enjoys" those 17 year olds while it's still legal.
Thanks, Joe, good to see that.
And rogue_nine9
If the new coaches are confident enough to recruit a pro-style QB, then that means the O Line is expected to make improvements in 2013 and beyond. One of VT's best Offensive Lines is the reason for Druckenmiller's success.
It might be more that Leofller runs a pro style offense so he will get his guys in place trusting that Grimes will get the OL together. If the OL isn't sound it could be a rough year or two. The QBs we are looking at this year and last year (Bucky, Park, Cornwell) are considered pro style but they are all pretty athletic and mobile. Not Tyrod mobile but guys who can buy a little time.
I thought Bucky is dual threat?
Yea trust me as someone who watched him play a few times last year, he's not a pro-style qb. He's very athletic and ran a lot. At least at the games I went to.
So does Logan, but that doesn't make him dual threat. Ben Roethlisberger scrambles effectively but he isn't dual threat either.
You're comparing a high school athlete to a highly touted college quarterback and a superbowl winning quarterback. Bad comparison - this is high school football we're talking about where the fastest kid on the team lines up at qb and runs past everybody.
I watched him play last year (Did you?). Just take my word for it that he's not a pro style quarterback. Maybe he has the skillset to be one one day but as of now, whether the recruiting sites said he was or not, he's an athlete that played quarterback. His throwing motion is ugly and he ran too much (both on designed runs and I'm faster than everybody so I'm just going to run runs).
Edit: Nothing against him at all. I'm glad we have him and I think he has the potential to be good. Just saying, right now he's not a pro style quarterback.
I haven't seen him play so I have to go by what I have read. He is listed as a dual on 247 and a pro on rivals. I'd believe 247 and your witness account more so.
Why does the fact that they are highly touted college qb's or SB winning qb's mean their skillsets and style of play can't be similar to a high schooler? You could compare a 5 yr olds attributes to Peyton Manning if you wanted to. That doesn't mean they have the same talent. But hey, you saw him play live so you must know everything about him.
I'm not saying I'm right, I'm not saying your wrong. What I'm saying is he does not appear to be the typical dual threat qb you see in college (Denard Robinson, Eric Crouch, Collin Klein) to me.
I'm not sure we can call Denard a "dual threat" because he can't really throw.
Did u see the guy in the orange hat look up from his camera like, "WTF? Really?" Lol
"Why does the fact that they are highly touted college qb's or SB winning qb's mean their skillsets and style of play can't be similar to a high schooler?" Thank you for proving my point. Bucky's skillset/style is not similar to theirs because he was a run first athlete playing qb in highschool and Ben/LT3 are quarterbacks that are athletic playing at the highest levels (the differing levels matter: in highschool - athletes win. In the highest levels - actual qb skills win).
All I'm saying is his mindset was run first (like Robinson, Crouch, and Klein's) and that style doesn't define a pro style quarterback to me. I don't know what rivals uses as their criteria but personally I don't think he's a pro style quarterback. And I asked an honest question, I don't know why the smart response was necessary. Never said I know everything about him, I said I watched him play complete games (not highlight tapes) so I think I have a better understanding of what type of player he is than those of you that haven't. Nothing personal, just being honest.
Check out my analysis of the first game of his senior season that I posted to TKP http://www.thekeyplay.com/comment/11519#comment-11519. Notice these things that are trends with dual-threat quarterbacks:
-six touchdowns (FIVE RUSHING & one passing)
-only five passes really went down field
-I think the biggest take away from what I saw was how fluid and agile he was for a 6’5 kid (in terms of his running ability)
-I loved what I saw out of him running; fast and quick with good moves for a tall kid. And I liked what I saw out of him passing
-Bucky is going to be more of a cut and get upfield type of mobile quarterback. He ran a lot, some on designed runs, some on keeps, and some on scrambles. He didn’t look downfield as he scrambled as I wish he had, but that will come with coaching and a better understanding of the game. Most of his runs looked really good; They were mostly big gains, where he made people miss and showed off some of his speed, quickness, and vision.
Take my word for it or don't. You'll see one day if he becomes our starter. No offense in any of this, just good debate. Go Hokies.
Edit: After reading through our comments again, I think the misunderstanding was whether or not an athletic qb can be pro style. I didn't mean to imply that. I know that an athletic qb can be pro style, but an athletic qb who has a run first mindset is not pro style. From the top I should have just said his mindset is run first and I think that would have gotten my point across more effectively.
I have often compared LT3 to Roethlisberger myself and caught flak for it. What folks don't understand in my comparison was their mobility. Big Ben is hard to bring down until his bum ankles finally caught up with him, but he had the ability to buy time with his feet while keep scanning downfield. This is where I see LT3. In fact, Mel "Fancy Hair" Kiper said the same thing. What sets LT3 behind in Big Ben is the ability to read coverage and anticipating breaks. That comes with proper coaching, seasoning, and learning. I have often argued for Thomas to go pro so he could sit behind a well-established starter and learn the rope. Of course, the hiring of Loeffler altered my perception a bit, but I maintain that LT3 is very similar to Big Ben in term of playing style and mobility.
Edit: Tried to link a table from Pro-footballReference.com and it didn't show up.
Ever think you might be offending Logan Thomas (There is only one LT btw) by comparing him to Roethlisberger? ;)
We're strictly talking about playing styles. Not *ahem* personal.... "activities"
From your game analysis:
"A play or two later, he broke to the outside and as the linebacker closed in on him and the sideline, he squared up, planted his foot then spun back to the sideline leaving the defender grabbing air! His final (and best) completion was the well-thrown touchdown to his receiver running a post."
Your description of this play reminded me of Tyrod in the Orange Bowl:
I just feel bad for Boykin here. Yeah, Wilson made a great play, but it was unnecessary considering Boykin's position. Luckily, Boykin had the awareness not to go for the ball as well, otherwise that may not have been a completion. The important part of that play was Tyrod's awareness, but it wouldn't have been looked at as such a great play if Boykin had been the one to catch it because he had positioning to make an easy catch.
In that instance, Wilson had to catch the ball, he is running looking at the QB in scramble mode. He doesn't know who is behind him because the routes have been abandoned. If he can me the catch, he has to there.
I agree that he had to make the catch based on the fact that he was watching Tyrod scramble and everyone is just trying to get open. I just feel bad for Boykin who got robbed essentially.
Nothing about about Raven's superbowl ring eye-balling him from the D-side
I bet they ate at Preston's because I biked right past Aaron Moorehead (who owns that Colts ring) talking to a family (I assume the Cornwells) in the parking lot at the Inn at about 9:30 this morning. Small world.
"Small World"? Or just "Blacksburg"?
Blacksburg is a small town, so... both?
If I ever bike past Moorehead, my reaction will likely be one of two things. 1: stop immediately and ask for an autograph/picture/to see his ring or 2: crash, while staring.
Every time I see a picture of Moorehead, I have to remind myself that he isn't Vince Vaughn. I hope Cornwell liked
Wedding Crashers.
I think the same thing every time I see him in the halls. He is so damn tall though, that would make a lot of people stare.
I don't see a resemblance myself, but maybe its a thing where you have to see him in person.
His name does sometimes remind me of this skit at about 2:14:
