College Gameday has decided that a team in the state of Virginia is worthy of a visit.

Wow.... It's come down to this now huh? If JMU was a FBS team, we'd be in serious trouble they would probably own the state at this point.
For someone that doesn't really follow JMU, do they have FBS aspirations? Seems like they have the fan support and would be a good fit for the C-USA.
To quote Terrance and Philip: "WELL F*K MY A$$ AND CALL ME A B*CH!!!" (not literally though)
The sad thing is as soon as I read the title of this thread I said JMU. The sadder thing is I think JMU would give us a ton of trouble this year if not be able to beat us...
I read it that they were coming to UVA, and was trying to remember what other top team they brought in for another a$$beating.
The FBS matchups are pretty terrible next week, so it's a good time to make the annual FCS trip.
Not that big a deal.
They always seem to visit an FBS school once a season. I think they visited one of the HBCUs a couple of years back.
*after Google-Fu* Yep, they visited FAMU last season.
Yea they have to do at least one token FCS location every year. But seriously f**k jmu I hope Richmond wins by a blowout.
Good for them. I like that ESPN does this and I am glad that they chose a VA school.
The one thing that sucks will be the number of times they bring up the JMU upset that never happened. But other than that, it's a great chance for JMU to showcase their university and athletics.
Isn't this the first time they've come to the commonwealth and it's not in Blacksburg?
I was going to ask if they'd ever gone to Charlottesville.
They have, but it was this past January for basketball. So it doesn't really count.
Good for them, not a big deal imo..... we have bigger things to worry about.
It's okay for other people to have nice things, no reason to be salty over it.
Except for UVA, if they ever get a good football program there I will get salty as hell.
JMU is probably the best team in Virginia right now. I'm pretty sure our D wouldn't stop that offense.
There are quite a few story lines here... the 2nd coming of Vad Lee, the ridiculous numbers that offense is putting up, 2nd year for Coach Withers, and a few other things.
So yeah, with the terrible FBS slate this makes a ton of sense for ESPN. Not a big deal.
And BTW, if you are bothered by this at all, don't watch... I'm sure every JMU student will be wearing their shirts with the final score of the VT-JMU game from a few years ago (I see them every day on campus) and that means that ESPN will be bringing a ton of negative attention to where VT is right now.
If they are still savoring that win from 5 years ago, their program is not as far along as I thought.
If we ever got a big win we probably would too
Sweet...another week where we will be the laughing stock of college football.
I can see the headlines on Gameday: 'reliving JMU's best wins. Number 1: Virginia Tech'.
sigh...
At least there is some good college football being played somewhere in this state
To spread the love around, Richmond is actually undefeated, outside of their FBS game against Maryland.
I'm happy for JMU. They have a beautiful campus/stadium and a great fanbase.
A colleague, JMU grad, went out on maternity leave a couple weeks ago. I get a text the day the kid was born, the second text after the announcement:
"Hey, I just got some time off & just figured out our football team has a better record than UVA & Tech combined."
I may have wished that goddam kid had a tail.
I don't care. It has zero to do with Virginia tech...
It's not exactly like Virginia collegiate athletics have been doing well regardless anyway.
JMU beat us 5 years ago
And then we went undefeated in ACC play.
Well the season hadn't started yet.
I don't know how other people will feel about this, but I think we should open every season playing JMU as our FCS opponent. Opening on an FCS opponent gives the team a chance at a semi-exhibition game rather than being thrown into a big-time game before they're ready. JMU is a better attraction than Furman. There is a little school rivalry there, mainly that JMU people won't stop talking about the one time they beat us and continuously say that their school is better, their girls are hotter, their food is better, their campus is prettier, and their parties are better. I'd like to pound them into the ground year after year to put them in their place.
wasn't this the thought behind our eternal series with ECU? an easy tune-up game we'd win every time?
This is a pretty arrogant mindset, honestly. To think that just because JMU is FCS and VT is FBS that we'll "pound them into the ground year after year"
be careful; if Whit doesn't make the right hire this year (as in, if he waits too long or doesn't hire the right guy) VT could easily become the doormat of the ACC. I don't think there is any football team out there that I truly believe our team could pummel year after year. Not unless something changes for the better...and quickly
For the record (and Ben, I know you were just stating what the JMU'er say):
1. Their campus is not prettier.
2. Their girls are more numerous.
3. Their parties are better because of #2.
4. Their food is better?!?! Surely you must be joking
Yes to all but #3.
Despite having a higher percentage of women on campus, JMU house parties aren't that great and they have one bar worth mentioning (Jack Browns).
Harrisonburg sucks.
Grew up in Harrisonburg and parents still live there.
JMU parties did indeed suck. Too many Jersey bros getting way too drunk off way too few beers. I have to admit their bars and restaurants are getting much better though. That said I'd go to Tech over JMU again in a heartbeat.
Also grew up around Harrisonburg, this is pretty true. Still a place to have a good time
Bold strategy by ESPN to broadcast from an open and active hellmouth. I'm sure the dilapidated buildings and trailer parks will look beautiful on HD. Hope the students find some local high school kids to proofread their signs for them since JMU is the place for kids who don't read good and want to learn to do other stuff good too.
There's really no need for that. JMU has a beautiful campus and they have some of the best programs in the state within the university.
Don't bash a school just because you don't like them.
I went to W&M. Why in the hell can't I bash a rival?
You can bash a rival. Feel free.
But keep it to sports. There's no reason to say something like that, especially when it isn't true
I'm not sure I'd own up to that. (I keed, I keed)
Seriously though, one of my greatest hopes for this season was to see LOLUVa go winless. As such, W&M and Syracuse are on my crap list. Both games were totally within reach, but they fell just a little short. I'm sure it all hinged on making 4-5 plays
Beautiful campus that is split by an interstate?
I'm with you (partially) with not bashing them, but that campus is not appealing at all.
JMU might have an interstate splitting their campus but there are still some very beautiful parts to the campus. It's certainly more appealing than most of the other campuses in the state...
I have no real beef with JMU. Had plenty of friends who went there, as did my girlfriend.
That being said, there's two reasons why JMU is getting College Gameday:
A) Lee Fitting went to JMU
B)
Best comment on the Reddit thread - "This is the closest UVA will come to hosting GameDay."
In football, anyway.
JMU is one of the few Virginia Teams with a national championship in Football.
Just saying...
It's the minor leagues. Nobody really cares about those titles.
While I understand what you're trying to say about it being a lower division, I disagree with you about no one caring about those titles. They meant a lot to me while I was at Appalachian State.
It's still enough for my wife who went to Richmond to occasionally throw it out in conversation to hold it over my head.
The scene looks pretty good out there today. Are JMU fans really passionate about football? I know some FCS schools are like Montana and App State (when they were still FCS), but I didn't really think about how much JMU puts into it. I also read a blog post by a JMU fan saying that he was excited Gameday was going, but he didn't feel like JMU really 'deserved' it.
JMU is passionate about turning up for events. They aren't wild about football in particular, but they have crazy school pride
They need more originality in their signs. I've seen three referencing Richmond's dislike of frosted pop tarts.
