Im sitting here looking at the game for the fourth time, trying to understand what the He!! Our problem is. Then it hits me! I see no on the field leadership. As players you have all you need to succeed in a game. Coaches can give you the game plan and its up to you players to execute between the white lines. I see all this Coach Beamer this and that but honestly this is on the players. Heart and effort cant be taught. Either you are a dog or not. Either the taste of defeat makes you sick or youre ok with it. I dont see 11 hats to the ball, i dont see swagger. I see a bunch of large babies playing a mans game!! Domination and the desire to be dominant is within ones self. Ive seen big time players make big time plays in big time games( DO WE HAVE ANY). Who is our leader. Who is the alpha on this team. Where is your heart! Where is your fire! Be accountable..... Go hard or go home!!! Stop letting coaches take the blame for your lack of effort. Paper tigers is what we are. No one fears us!! Why? We can lose, but we shoukd leave orange and maroon on helmets and VT tatts on butts. Man up. Go to the nearest restroom and check and see if you are a warrior or not. Im tired of good players who are fine with being mediocre. Have a meeting shut all the doors and find out whos ready to go to war!!!! I hope i dont see a bunch of over dressed cub scouts this saturday. Play for the Brand!! Leave your legacy every play. Who will fight for every yard, inch by inch if necessary. Who will unite a group of warriors whos very name will invoke fear!!! We are VT but you define what that mean between the lines. Be fast, be physical, be nasty and by all means be VT!!!

I have been thinking this all week. Our players really looked despondent against miami.... Coaches coach the players sure... But at some point the players have to realize that it's their team at the end of the day. They decide what their legacy will be at Tech. We had 10 win seasons with more vanilla game plans... Those guys played their nuts off and had fun doing it.
This week would probably be a good week for the seniors to call a "players only" meeting and have a call to arms. Stand up and play angry, passionate, with heart!

I get what you're saying and I agree, but if we recruited a bunch of soft players who don't want to win, play hard, or be leaders, whose fault is that? I know we have talent, but if the players don't care anymore, that's a direct reflection of the staff that brought them here and coaches them. I think we need a culture change, and fast.

I know it's been talked about to death, but legitimately who is going to fire these guys up and get them to play hard? We're not seeing it happen. If seniors should step up and take responsiblity, why aren't we seeing it? I don't think they're going to read this website and suddenly get motivated. I understand we need to see more effort and drive, but where is that going to come from?

He plays defensive back....number 6, I think. He's the guy. He's the one to bring back the energy level, the swagger, the confidence, the refusal to allow the guy across from him beat him even once. He might not be in position yet to be vocal about it or to call anyone out, but he can definitely lead by example.

All joking aside, I 100% agree with you. I only caught a bit of the game but we certainly didn't look like VT of old. Dadi and Sam both look to be leaders on this team, and both give max effort (best I can tell). I think we have the leaders but it doesn't look like the message is getting received.
The Offensive side of the ball has on field leaders. Sam, Brewer, Malleck.
The Defense, not so much.

Bottom line is that the game is Football where aggression is ok. Intensity must be matched, exceeded actually. Ive seen to many plays where ipposing players werent down and we didnt help them get down a tad quicker. Too many gentleman and not enough dogs. Many should play golf. No one was remotely pissed when the Miami DT put the late hit on Brewer's collarbone to get him out of the game!!!! Where i come from, Kaaya would have paid for that. The tone would have been matched!!! I dont see an alpha male in the bunch. Too many tails between the legs. Funny thing is their kids will look back on their film and say " Daddy was ok, but he wasnt a Dog". We got slap around and down right bullied and know one stood up. Has nothing to do with coaching but everything to do with the heart of youngmen!!!! Beamer cant make kids tough. Either they have or not!!!! We need more LIONS and less candy. Ive seen defenses hold in games when the O was slow and vise versa. I wouldnt share a fox hole with too many of them right now. Pathetic effort and no kill is what i see. Walking around during plays and rolling on the ground looking at the opposing team make plays. Bunch of weak minding individuals that need to man up and be a fierce team. Until then they will continue to ask "May I beat you, block you or hit you". Soft as cotten!
There was a time in the not too distant past, where the defense had 6 - 7 Alpha dogs. They tried to outplay each other to be the lead Alpha dog. Opposing Offenses suffered greatly.

Yeah, we do appear to have a lot kids that are lambs and not lions at heart. The thing is, we all have a lion in us somewhere. It's just finding the inspiration to wake it up can be hard.
Looks like Beamer is still searching for that leader. Looks like he depends on Maddy and Malleck a lot as they have been captains for most games this season. This week I noticed they shook it up and went with Ekanem and Ford as captain. Chuck Clark and Sam Rogers have seen a lot of games as captain even as non-seniors like Malleck had last year. Looks like Beamer trying to shake things up with Isaiah Ford as a guy who everyone seems to look at to go out and make a play.
Problem is, you don't get picked to be the Alpha Dog, you either are one or you're not...and we don't seem to have many.
