looks like Hokie women's soccer broke into the top 10 and is in the company of four other ACC schools (FSU, UVA, Notre Dame and UNC): Link

Just beat the #12 neers. Always love to beat them and them being ranked is the cherry

That's really awesome. I love VT making strides in all sports.

The girls soccer program has been doing pretty well the last couple of years. Hopefully this is sustained. The boys program let a great coach get away and hasn't done as well since.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

"Get Away"?
He cheated, and got our Mens Soccer team on NCAA suspension for recruiting professional nationals. This is our first year off of the suspension for the recruiting violation for Mens Soccer.

Well, that's a tad harsh. There were some minor violations for paying some fees for foreign recruits, which they later reimbursed.

But Oliver Weiss was clearly a good soccer coach, who made some judgment errors.

Still, you can't let that kind of thing slide.

I agree, Weiss was a VERY good coach who knew his stuff. VT was a national contender under his watch. The men's team is making a steady comeback, and the women's team is a national powerhouse. I need to go watch them both sometime before the season ends. Can't beat free soccer. GO HOKIES!!!

Figured I'd update here instead of starting a new thread:

The women's soccer team is again ranked #9 in the country after dipping down to #12 during mid-September. They downed #22 Duke 4-2 in Durham on Sunday, the first game of a three game road trip. They play at Wake Forest tomorrow and at #7 Clemson on Sunday. Then they return home for a 3 game homestand against Miami, FSU (televised on ESPN3), and Pitt before finishing the regular season at Notre Dame (again on ESPN3).

The ladies now sit at 11-1-1 on the season, 3-1 in the ACC with the lone loss coming to #3 UNC.

Very nice and even better that this will be on ESPN3 so I check out the team in action.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Awesome!

Between the Women's Soccer team and the Wrestling team, Virginia Tech has the chance to win our first team national championship in the near future. I encourage everyone who can to attend their games and matches. Other than the wrestling matches at the Moss Arts Center, all of them are free.

Women's Soccer takes on #1 Florida State in a few minutes on ESPN3

Edit: Going into extra time 0-0

Edit: Going into second extra time now.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

OVERTIME!!!!

I'll take a 0-0 draw against the defending national champs and a team we're 0-15-1 against all time. Fun game to watch. I'm looking forward to catching some tournament games in a couple weeks.

It's not a loss, I'll take it!

They just tied but thoroughly outplayed FSU. Refeering was attrocious.

was it officiated by this legend? for those who don't know...(err, nearly all of you) he once showed a yellow card three times to the same player before he finally sent him off:

Seemed to me like it was this guy....

Can't tell if this is sarcastic or not, but Graham Poll was one of the greatest English referees of all time. Yeah he made a pretty bad mistake, but he still was one of the elite officials in years gone by. As a soccer official certified by FIFA, I can tell you that it is fairly easy to write down the wrong number for a yellow/red if you get in too much of a rush. No excuse for it, but it can happen...

I agree the reffing was bad, but I think gameflow made our girls look far more competitive than they really were. By no means did we "thoroughly outplay" them. Remember, they had 5 shots on goal compared to our 0 going into OT. If Florida State had slowed things down and played smart, tactical soccer, I think they'd win. But it seems like our girls have a great conditioning program going, so the fast and loose gameplay seemed to really benefit them, and made things far more fun to watch.

I don't shots on goal is always a clear indicator of which team played better. A lot of those shots were soft, routine saves. I can't find the stat but it seems like we had far more chances than they did in their zone and just couldn't quite convert. Towards the end of the second half and a majority of OT, I thought there was no way we were leaving without a goal.

agreed SOG can be really misleading. if you take a shot from 40 yards out it counts but if you play a low cross in to the six and the players foot is an inch away it doesnt show up on the stat sheet aside from a missed cross. Higher soccer analytics and stats are starting to come into play like "chances created" etc, but its definitely no football yet. My points is I'd take that cross over a 40 yard shot any day of the week as a coach you can dominate a team without winning SOG stat

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I'll agree with both these points. My original point was that for most of the game, I wouldn't have said we were thoroughly outplaying them. I thought it was a pretty evenly matched game, and I'm content with the tie. I'd have liked to have seen one of the close shots go in during OT, but hanging with the #1 team and forcing a draw certainly doesn't hurt us. Now we just need them to beat UVA this weekend.

Just fell 1-0 to Penn St in the NCAA tournament to end the season
