For those not in the know about the minute details of our fine institution's history.
In 1898 VAMC graduated a young man who had been the Captain of E Battery, Editor of the Bugle, and earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
That man was Julian Ashby Burruss. Years later in 1908-1918 he was the first President and a key founder of the "State Normal and Industrial School for Women" which would eventually become JMU.
In 1919 he answered the call to return home to VPI, where he would lead the school through the major post WW1 expansion, and amongst other things establish the Hokie Stone and Collegiate Gothic standard for the campus, of course now typified in Burruss Hall.

Interestingly enough, JMU has their own Burruss Hall which is covered in a Hokie Stone esque pattern
Didn't you also tell me at some point that you'd found documentation/anecdotes that showed him to be a hall of fame level asshole, the likes of which most of us can only dream of becoming?
He was always held to be cold and aloof. But he lasted from 1920 to 1946 and thus under his tenure everything from the band getting our name, to Tech Triumph being written, to women being admitted occurred.
In 1942 though the Corps did stage protests due to the shameful quality of the mess and dining halls, causing the Governor himself to visit and investigate.
