Just thought I'd close the loop by announcing James Harland Haden was born (here in Nashville) Sat at 10:42am. Mom and baby are doing great, and we've been home a couple of days now.
On Sat, we got settled into our hospital room in time for me to watch the 4th quarter and the OT periods. Heartbreaking loss, for sure. But, I took it all much better on a day when I saw with fresh perspective re: what truly matters most.

I am adopting a position I read elsewhere. I too believe this is (should be) Frank's last year as HC. I choose to celebrate it. Acknowledge the amazing things this great man has done for every Hokie and root this team on to a bowl win finale.
I second this. I too think it is time for a change and that with the right coach we can get things rolling again but man it is going to take a while looking at the sideline and seeing someone other than Frank. Like you said, I'm just going to hope the best for the rest of the year and hopefully he can go out with another winning season.
He's done a ton (and that's sugar coating it) for VT and his career here has been a freaking awesome ride for the most part.

Do you have any access to cash? You can probably scalp a pretty cheap ticket to the game.
I know how much sucks -- I've been there. Did they get your credit cards and ID? If they did, you need to spend some time canceling those. If it's just cash and tickets, it still sucks, but you can recover fairly easily.
EDIT: If you know your seat numbers, I wonder if you could get a replacement? Maybe someone else here knows if that's possible. If I had to guess, I'd assume that's a lost cause.

OT-Was anyone else aware that Baylor lets the student section on the field to lead the team out of the tunnel? I just heard them say it on the broadcast. That sounds pretty cool from a student's perspective but at the same time it seems like it would be a hassle to organize.
I did know some of the students go into the tunnel and have to run the length of the field to get to their seats. But I didn't know they're leading the team out of the tunnel, no.
I'm just going to believe that we wore out Miami's O-line last week. Kaaya got beat up the entire first half and has been knocked out of the game.
I just want to see how much McMillian can take. Run the kid 25 times. Between the tackles, around the edge, catching passes. Jet sweeps. He is probably our most explosive weapon.

I must be missing something because all I've seen is boneheaded punt "return" after punt return and completely blown coverage every time he's been in on defense.
Only positive play I've seen from him all year was his pick against ECU and he followed that up by getting picked on and shredded for huge gains the rest of the game.

He has good athletic ability but he's a terrible football player.

I'll leave with this: Is there another team that has such a dropoff from 1st to 2nd stringers at so many key positions that they are forced to play kids that are either too hurt to be truly effective (Dadi with his bum hands unable to wrap up for tackles), or are simply not good at their position. Moto is constantly either running himself out of a play, or gluing himself to a blocker. God how I miss seeing our Mike run through a gap and make a stop at the point of impact.
We have either a significant problem with coaching these kids up, including the 2nd stringers, or with recruiting.
I am just at a loss that Foster's D could look so lost out there. Yeah it's a close game -- but if Sirk was more consistent we'd be down 2 td's at this point at a minimum.

He gives you another run option, and is accurate enough at that distance.
He can take punishment if necessary. Not worth getting Brewer hurt in that situation.
Lots of ways to rationalize that call. End of the day it doesn't pass the smell test. Brewer has a much greater command of the offense and you have guys like hodges and Malleck who are matchup advantages.
I'm OK with it.
Motley is capable of running the whole playbook there, and we need Brewer for 95-yard drives, not a two-point attempt.
For me that one is 50-50.
I don't know that Motley ever had the whole playbook, but unless you have a home run play there, Brewer does it better. It's one play for points. You play with your best chance of succeeding.

This game was very similar in finish to the 2013 Maryland game at Lane. This L hurt a lot more though.
That one made me sick. That was my last home game as a student. Seeing Edsall and his goons celebrate on the field was probably one of the most sickening feelings I've ever had at a sporting event. I'm sure if I was a student today, this would have been just almost as bad (I don't think it would have been as bad because back in 2013, I actually thought we were decent and had a good chance of winning every game).
Maryland was a far worse loss to me. They were a bad team, and we lost badly to them. We took a good Duke team to 4OT and lost on the damn 2 pt conversion.
That's how you take a big shit on the field. I do get entertained by this team. I get entertained by the consistent inconsistency.
Lot's of fingers to point. To me this is on the coaches 1) terrible play calling 2) not using our personnel right. Mcm is our best player and it took the coaches 4.5 games to realize it.

Middle linebacker play is on Bud Foster. He has gotten complacent and doesn't recruit hard anymore.
I don't know that Foster has stopped trying. Im not certain him and his staff (outside of Gray) have ever known how to recruit. I don't think it's a laziness/complacency issue for the defensive staff.

I agree that Lawson needs to see the field some. But Brewer played his tail off and to think he doesn't deserve to be on the field nearly every snap is a disservice to that kid and his effort. Offense isn't the issue. As you said, the defense is flat out bad and predictable. We don't have the personnel to run a defense with no deep safety half the time. Our linebacker play is the worst we've seen in at least 15-20 years and that makes everything harder on everyone else on the defense.

They are ranked. We played them to 4 OTs That unfortunately is about the best we can expect. BC, GA.Tech, and UVA are the only logical bets to keep the bowl streak alive and that is realistically all we a capable of at this time
