Good and Bad Recruiting News?

So several sources are reporting the Jacob Park has indeed committed to UGA

Then we have everybody's favorite recruiting recruit, CJ Reavis saying the following.

Has Park's commitment led to another QB making his decision? Cornwell is still thought to be a Bama lean, so I doubt its him. I guess we'll find out in the next 24 hours. Commence the speculation!

5:45 UPDATE:
ANNNNND Cornwell commits to Bama. We've really struck out on some recruits this year. Good thing we have Bucky coming in this fall.

This is really disheartening. Park came out months ago and said he always wanted to go to Tech, now this. One more person I can unfollow on Twitter...

So what is CJ talking about? My ears are open. Even if nothing comes of it, I still already love CJ.

It looks like depth is going to be a concern for the foreseeable future. Unless they get somebody else in this class, we're going to have to keep Motley, Parker, or McMillian as a QB so we can redshirt whoever we get in 2015. I think all three would be better suited at a different position, especially in Loeffler's system.

Bummer of a week!

At this point, I'd say it's got to be somebody on D. Maybe Brown?

That would be great, but highly doubtful. It may not even be a recruit. Maybe Holland Fisher has qualified academically or something.

Guessing Reavis helped Exum record a new rap track and that's the news.

cj reavis would not be fired up about a 2013 recruit qualifying,,, thats expected. With that said... nnadi is gunna commit soon

Damn. Looks like #buckyball will have to really step up in the future. I think we have the right staff to coach him up.

The SEC is too seductive these days.

Wow. Lost Hand, and both Park and Cornwell.

This recruiting season is turning BRUTAL. Tech was in a really, really fantastic spot to get a couple of big name recruits and things just didn't break their way. Hopefully Loeffler turns this Offensive ship around this season. Not sure I can take another 12 months like this.

I think the perception of VT not being a very solid offensive team over the course of more than a decade has played a part in us not landing some of these big names.

...We need to recruit another TE/QB!

How much is the perception of a VT QB "having to carry the entire offense" hurting us? Do you think these recruits are looking around and seeing better supporting casts in other places? Off line, RBs and WRs?

This sucks...come on CJ,,,

Sean

With all due respect to CJ, I really hope the good news is not him stating "I'm now guaranteed to be the highest rated recruit of this class!"

All joking aside, I love the kid. But this little recruiting "run" we are on is brutal.

-Justin Fuente, probably

what a crappy crappy week, i really thought these new coaches would secure us at least one of these guys. i know there are so many more factors that play in but weve gotta get this on track and try to land some other decent guys on our target board

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

It just goes to show us that the offseason changes are going to take some time to change VT's overall perception on the recruiting trail.

Winning solves all problems.

So the bad news is that we lost out on not one but TWO highly recruited QB's and the good news is simply that we have good news coming soon. THAT'S THE GOOD NEWS? For crying out loud this is a horrible post and I loath everything about it. And perhaps recruits don't like other recruits busting the bubble for they're commitment announcement. I would rather CJ say something AFTER the other players commit instead of wrecking they're fun.

If you can't dazzle em' with intelligence just baffle em' with bullshit.

I'll try and title the post better next time?

@Fightin_Gobbler

The title wasn't what I had an issue with it was the substance of the post that is pissin' me off. I don't understand why we keep losing out on these high profile players. How many RB's have we put in the NFL in this decade alone yet I don't see us bringing in any 4 or 5 star RB's. Or anything better than a 3 star OL prospect. Dabo isn't really the best coach I've ever seen but he is smart enough to surround himself with assistant coaches who know how to win. And while I am more than happy Steinspring isn't the OC any longer. The best we could do is get an OC from a failing SEC school who was getting the boot anyway? Why didn't we go after an OC from someplace like Boise or NIU and actually try to put points on the board? This problem is far reaching and all encompassing from the HC wanting to "kill the clock" vs SCORE POINTS to the lack of OL talent.

If you can't dazzle em' with intelligence just baffle em' with bullshit.

Give the new coaches a chance. They were just hired in January. You can't expect them to turn around our recruiting, which has been lackluster for the past decade, in such a short time. Most of us, myself included, thought there'd be a quick fix with these five star recruits' sudden interest and we got a serious reality check last week in regard to where our program is viewed by that level of recruit. It's going to take time to change the perception and it will start on the field.

Take a deep breath and chill :)

When's the last time one the the running backs we put the NFL actually produced? Wilson looks to have a bright future, Ru's fell to the injury bug, but Jones and Suggs were busts.

We're, with 99.9% certainty, getting all under the radar offensive line recruits this cycle. That's what happens when you bring in a new coach in January. Grimes hasn't been able to develop the relationships.

Florida hired Brent Pease from Boise and that worked out for them (LOL).

Hokies lobbied and hollered for change, got it, but failed to realize there'd be growing pains.

Jones had the injury bug something awful. I thought the same was true of Suggs though less publicized, but I could be off there.

The second lose was added later, at the time, there was only one lose and reavis posting. You never know what CJ has...could be anything. Maybe the recruit doesn't have twitter...

This week....(sigh)

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Look for vt to offer andrew ford soon .. And cj may be talkiing about shawn payne

He points out that it isn't Shawn Payne in a later tweet. Plus I don't think Payne would be hyped up as great news.

I asked French what he thought about Ford, "The best live arm of any quarterback that the Hokies have recruited this cycle." I feel much better if we offer him. He may have a paltry offer sheet (at the moment) because it seems like he was a second or third option for a lot of schools, but he earned and Elite 11 invite and a 3-star / 4-star.

Agreed. I started reading about Ford a week or so ago when Park got offered by UGA and I had this weird feeling something bad might happen. I really like what I see and read about Ford, and the Elite 11 invite validates some of the rumblings about his "under the radar" quasi-hype. And for what its worth, he attends the same High School as Adam Breneman, who was one of (if not the) top TE recruit in the nation last cycle and is at PSU.

Can you elaborate on that "best live arm" statement a bit? After just now watching some of his film, it seems to me like he doesn't exactly have a cannon and I didn't even see him throw a deep out on any of his highlights. Just doesn't seem like he's able to put the zip on the ball that is required to be successful at this level. That said, he throws touch passes extremely well and looks pretty accurate too.

I watched his junior film highlights over on 247 and thought his arm was comparable to Park's and showed some good pop. BCS-ready from day one? Of course not, but they rarely are. He throws a nice down-the-field seam route, which is indicative of an ability to climb the pocket, throw over LBs and under safeties. Deep ball looks nice, too. Doesn't seem to radar-lock on one receiver, either, though it's obviously a highlight tape, not a low-light tape, so take that for what it's worth. Overall, looks like he can play and would do well in the kind of system Loeffler is trying to install for us. Hope he gives us a look.

I noticed a lot of that too (Especially the seam route. Can you say "Loeffler likes to use his tight ends?") I guess that with Tyrod, Logan, and focus on guys like Bucky and Cornwell, I've been spoiled/come to expect and prefer guys with a howitzer attached to their shoulder.

Can't recall a worse week in recruiting this is really discouraging

"were not gonna back down from anybody" - shane beamer

The only recruit that would be considered "big news" and actually seems ready to commit is Nnadi. I would be absolutely SHOCKED if Brown committed to us soon. The more I think about it, the more I think it's not recruiting related.

It's pretty simple when it comes to recruiting. The equation looks like this
: #Beatbama=bigtime recruits coming in

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

Amen to that.

Precisely. I'm going to the Georgia Dome to see the game and I've been telling everyone who asks me, "Why? We're gonna lose." that I'm going to support my team and that it should be fun either way. Now, I see this game becoming more and more important for off-the-field reasons. We need to prove to OUR recruits, fans and donors that this program is going somewhere as well as improving the national perception of VT. Even if we lose, this needs to be a game. I think the coaches can work with that. It's not too difficult to sit a recruit down and say, "Look how close we were to beating Alabama, even with all that talent they've got stockpiled down there. You could help take us to that next level and be a legend here at VT." If we win, gravy. And prepare for the bandwagon/fairweather fans to start showing up in droves. Here's to a strong showing in Atlanta.

I will be in Atlanta wearing a Cam Newton Auburn shirt for this game. If we can't win, I want to piss off as many of those degenerate fans as possible. I know every program has its lousy fans, but never have I encountered such widespread arrogant, uneducated and obnoxious fans as the University of Alabama. When we played Auburn in New Orleans I had a great experience. I can chronicle countless negative episodes with Bama. Not looking forward to this game to be honest but have already committed to going.

I don't know what a hokie is, but God is one of them."
-Lee Corso

I went to auburn my freshman year so I can attest that they're terrible. They had a shirt "I wear this since I went to auburn, you wear your bama shirt since you went to walmart." I would argue that Miami fans are worse. At least bama fans show up to the games

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Well, that's also partly because they don't sell much UVA stuff in Walmart.

So I don't know who the player is, but I've heard from a reliable source that someone has committed and he will make people VERY happy

You don't just post something like that and then give up after 30 minutes. You gotta think... you got a pet. You got a responsibility. You get off your ass and you find that fucking recruit!

You're an evil person. I have half a mind to downvote you for that....

OK, people, don't ACTUALLY downvote him for that.

Oh no not a down vote!!!!!! My weekend's ruined. But yeah it is recruiting related and I honestly don't know who it is. My GUESS would be Nnadi or Street. Both of them would have me pretty hype. The news is supposed to come out today, though. If it doesn't, don't kill the (shitty) messenger.

I for one appreciate you sharing what you heard. If the name I heard is true, we'll all be happy.

Was it Ford?

Nope

It's Andrew Ford. *Edit: This is a wild ass guess based solely on him camping with us and JC
Schurburt having us at 100% to get him.

Yeah but 247 just started the predictions on Andrew, mainly because we lost DC5 & JP10, so they assume we are going after Ford. I think he doesn't even have an offer yet.

Let the record show: I was (somehow) right (for once) in a prediction. Next prediction: 17 VT- 16 BAMA

Soooooooooooooo CJ.................. Where's this good news???
l

Did CJ ever say the good news was about recruiting? I mean, there are lots of things that would make hokienation happy, not all of which are related to recruiting.

That being said, a boost in recruiting would be nice...

I got a strange feeling that it might be Jalyn Holmes, not from an article, just from recent tweets between he and CJ, I mean this could make sense maybe CJ was tellin him come on man stay home in VA and lets win a nat champ. idk just a guess. But man that would be awesome!!

5 MINS HOKIE NATION

Andrew Ford commits!!!

And were on the board for a qb in the class of 2014 now no fret hokies, see we got one. welcome to hokienation Andrew!

for whats its worth espn has them listed as their fastest pock passing qb with a 4.55 40 if that's official time that's not too bad and he can still beat people with his feet too.

Yeah, if that's official that's really fast for a pocket QB.

So we're sure this is the good news cj was talkin about?

"were not gonna back down from anybody" - shane beamer

I got a feeling Tracing McMillan is not happy about this.

Perhaps, but the coaches were honest with him. He'll get a shot at QB, otherwise they believe he's a good enough athlete to play a bunch of other positions.

I just checked out his Twitter. He actually seems cool with it all.

I had the same thought when I saw that tweet, but after everything involving our public pursuit of #beachflow, Park, etc do you think he began to assume he was the guy by default? Competition breeds excellence.

So I was thinking about this over the weekend and as shitty as last week was, when was the last time we were in the running for the #1 recruit and 2 of the highest rated QBs? It really sucks that we didn't land them, but in years past we rarely would've made it to top 5 status with recruits like this.

It doesn't hurt that Ford committed. Now onto the Nandi and/or Brown and some big ass country fed man-children for the O-line

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

I agree - though it was disappointing not to land any of the three (Cornwell, Park or Hand), I was surprised at the doom & gloom on the site.

I don't ever remember the Hokies pursuing so many elite talents & for us to suddenly land just one would have been a huge leap. Remember, even elite programs strike out on elite talent... it's just that they're more used to seeing 5-stars commit, so when one doesn't it's not that big of a deal. Give this staff time to develop an identity on the field and more than one recruiting cycle, I would expect we will see results in the next few years. So we may not have landed a big-name recruit this go around, but as long as we're getting quality players & developing them to perform we shouldn't wallow in misery.

Plus, still being in the mix for some other high-profile recruits is reason for optimism - the world won't end because a few guys decided they want to play elsewhere.
