CBS Sports Bowl Prediction

Well I don't know how updated the bowl projections are by Jerry Palm at CBS sports but here is the link:

CBS SPORTS BOWL Projections

VT is projected to go to the Independence bowl against Texas State (who?)

Independence Bowl Dec. 26 Shreveport, La. SEC vs. ACC Texas State+ vs. Virginia Tech

if it's SEC vs ACC should that be Texas A&M?

Onward and upward

Looks like they are predicting that between the Playoff and the NY6 the SEC wont be able to fill their bowl slate hence TxSt from the Sun Belt.

He's got Texas A&M in the Outback Bowl with Texas St. as a "replacement team".

There's a "+" sign, which means Texas State is a replacement team for an $EC team.

Anyone else think that is kind of fitting? Frank's first bowl was the Independence bowl in 1993

I just passed a minor milestone, too!

Also, I'd like to go to a bowl but it'll probably be the Horri-Bowl

To be honest, if we can win the games necessary to get there I would be happy at any bowl.

If the good guys can find 3 wins out of the remaining 4, I can see a lower tier bowl loving a shot at VT with the narrative of Frank's possible last game just for fan interest.

Don't underestimate the power of this coming true. Remember when FSU got the Gator Bowl bid in Bowden's last year?

So...we're going to a bowl game against Murray State?

Kinda Surprised to see TxState predicted to go to a bowl at all too.

They are sitting at 2-4 and 1-1 in Sun Belt play so far. And are actually coached by Dennis Franchione, the coach at TAMU when VT beat them both games. His precious 6-6 and 7-5 seasons with the Bobcats also did not garner bowl bids.

three new bowls approved for this year, bringing total to 42.

At least Texas is a state. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Boise.

And Ball.

but their field is blue...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Independence would be great. Back to where it started for Frank. It would be cool to get Indiana there to play us.

The bowl streak is alive friends!

No matter the record, we always have automatic eligibility for this year's bowl game:

Let's Go

Don't you be knocking free weeknight football!

I wish there were MORE bowls, There is no such thing as enough college football in December.

We're....we're gonna play the Armadillos?

Sadly, the stripes on their jerseys look better than ours.

I think CFB will REALLY key on their kicker (Kathy Ireland) in this epic tilt

I think the defense would actually be inspired enough to let them get in field goal range every drive then stop them...

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but VT has to win 3 of the next four games to be bowl eligible.

It's not a given by any means.

Maybe not enough teams are eligible and we can get a waiver?

That would be sort of sad, wouldn't it?

Then again, I'd probably be in favor of that so they get another month of practice.

Speaking of head coaching searches, could Virginia Tech's date at the Independence Bowl be the last game for Frank Beamer? And could it serve as an audition for Rich Rodriguez to take over in Blacksburg? Yes, it certainly could.

Bleacher Report is predicting an Independence Bowl matchup against Arizona

God I wish this Rich Rod talk would go away.

Agree completely! Would be a terrible hire!

I don't understand why this would be a terrible hire?

The "upside" to playing Texas State? Rob Schneider on the call for the Armadillos and Sinbad really hasn't had any good work since 1993.

"and a BIIIIIIIG sack by Manu Manu the Slender"

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

With our luck Stonehands would turn into Pillowhands and light us up for about 250 yards receiving.

If you play it, they will win.

With all due respect, the upside would be Kathy Ireland in football pants.

If VT can't get past BC this weekend I have very very low hopes that we'll make a bowl game. This weekends game is critically important to keeping at least 1 streak alive.

BC has a historically bad offense. Their defense is elite so this figures to be a low scoring affair. I have to believe that our offense really only needs to score once or twice to win the game. If we can't win a 13-7 type of match-up we're not going to stand a chance against GT and UNC. UVA is a toss-up at this point, IMO.

Our defense has been a leaky sieve all year long. If we can't stop a team as bad as BC is offensively how can we legitimately expect to stop teams with competent offenses like UNC and GT? Our offense is less inconsistent than our defense this year, which is weird all by itself, but I don't think we can comfortably rely on our offense to out-score teams that are bound to get points of their own. We may very well end up at 3-9 or 4-8. Those are extremely likely marks for this team at this stage. That's seriously unfortunate because I do believe this team is talented enough to beat all 4 teams that remain. I just don't think the chemistry is there. The defense lacks leadership and it seems all of the players, as talented as they are, tend to be streaky. Even players who are supposed to be stalwarts for us, like Hodges, struggle to play at a high level for entire games (see several dropped passes vs Duke).

Regardless of whether we go 4-0 or 0-4 (or anything in between) to finish out the season I'll be there screaming my lungs out for our team and supporting them any way I can. I don't have high hopes but I still love my Hokies regardless of record.

Go Hokies!

the last game against a "really really good, no really I mean it good" defense, we were able to put 24 on the board in regulation and another 19 points in 4 OTs. I'm gonna go ahead and say we can put up enough points against BC

Love,

Your ever hopeful hokie fan

fair point. My point isn't as much about our offense being able to score enough to win as it is our defense being able to stop BC enough to win.

Sure our offense did enough to win last week. The defense didn't and we lost. We SHOULD be able to beat BC. Our offense SHOULD only need to score twice (hopefully they score more) but I'm worried to death the defense will falter and gift BC's pedestrian offense a couple scores of their own. If we lose to BC I don't think we have the horses to beat either UNC or GT. Even if we beat BC by a small margin I'll be very concerned about stopping the UNC and GT offenses enough to get the win.

If we come into Chestnut hill and drop 28+ points on BC and hold them to 10-17 then I'll feel pretty good about beating at least one of UNC/GT and I'd like our chances against UVa. Does anybody really think that VT's offense, out of anybody, is going to score more than 13 points on BCs defense?

Onward and upward

Boston College hasn't yielded more than 9 offensive points to a single team they've played Not named Clemson. The only teams who have scored more than 9 points did so with the help of defensive and special teams scores. FSU had a fumble return for a TD and won 14-0. Northern Illinois returned a kick-off 86 yards for a score in a 14-17 losing effort.

The other 4 teams they've played combined for 15 points. I don't know how many of those were set up by defensive stands from their opponents but I'd wager that BCs offense is part of the reason their defense gave up some of those 15 points.

Clemson is a legitimately good team that may very well contend for a national championship this year. It makes sense that they were able to overwhelm BC. Nobody else has. Our offense is arguably better this year than it has been in recent years, especially with Brewer back at the helm. I don't think our offense is championship caliber, though, and our defense isn't likely to put us in favorable scoring positions like Clemson's did.

Our improved offense may be able to score some points on BC, but I wouldn't count on it. If our defense gives up 2 scores we could be looking at yet another embarrassing loss to a pretty bad 3-4 team.

I get what you're saying, I really do. However, within 48 hours of kick off (almost) I refuse to believe we will lose until the clock runs down and the bad guys have a higher number next to their name on the scoreboard.

I refuse to believe we will lose

I'm neither saying that I believe we'll lose nor trying to convince you or anyone else that we will lose. I'm just saying that IF we can't beat BC soundly this weekend I'm going to have a very grim outlook on the remainder of our season. If we shutout BC I'll feel better about our defense. If BC is able to score more than 14 points on our defense I have to believe UNC and GT will be able to pile on points in bunches and I'm just not confident that our offense will be able to keep up with those teams. As improved as our offense is, I just don't trust it to help us win shootouts.
