Seriously, it netted positive results so I'll take it. However, the decision making makes absolutely no sense. The penalty gave them the ball 7 yards further up field than they started.
Outside of that it was a really solid half of football. The offense was very successful against a really good defense even though they left some points on the board. The defense is doing what they should be doing against a bad offense. Good to see the Hokies taking care of business!

A few head-scratchers, but up 20-0 at half is fantastic. Happiest I've been watching VT football in...a long time.

Don't get me wrong. I want nothing more than to shut down BC. But their offense is badddd.
But the flip side is their D is good, and our offense is getting it done. The infuriating thing to me is this how our team could look if the D had held up this season.
I don't think the D was going to be any better regardless. I know missing Fuller hurts tremendously, but this unit as a whole was extremely overrated from all the preseason hype and expectations. We're too small up front, very weak at linebacker, and can't consistently get pressure with our front four. Injuries in the secondary and a ton of youth and inexperience aren't helping either.
We've seen plenty of inconsistency with the offense too. While they do look better on the whole this year, it did take us until the NC State game to scrap the RB rotation and go with our best back. Offensive line was abysmal against Pitt. Having Brewer all season would've helped, but I'm not of the mindset that we would be 7-1 or anything had he not been out. Still too many inconsistencies and holes on this team.
I just hope we can keep up this momentum from the first half and rally to keep the bowl streak alive.
We are playing great in all 3 facets of the game but why oh why does the coaching staff think we can roll timeouts over to the 2nd half? They took 2 of them to the locker room, should have called one near midfield, that wasted 4 seconds which would have given us a chance to throw one or two more passes into the end zone. Did we add Mike London to the staff as Head of Time Management?

Actually, it would have only been 2 seconds - the clock stopped at 21 seconds to move the chains. I kinda felt the same way, that they should have called timeout, but i don't think we get another play. If Cam doesn't get out of bounds, we would have had to burn the second time out, which would have been the last timeout and we would have kicked with 8 seconds on the clock instead of 6.
So far today:
VT 20 points scored (BC averaged 11.8 points PER GAME before today)
Granted only 13 by the offense, but still beating the average.
VT 235 total yards (BC avg. 217 PER GAME)
VT 69 rushing yards (BC avg. 62.1 PER GAME)
It's not like we're the only ones that get to count defensive scores. Their 11.8 ppg includes any defensive scores given up.

To be fair, as long as he doesn't muff it and gets a decent return every once in a while I'm ok with it. Losing a couple of yards is nothing compared to turning it over on a punt
He has made some REALLY bad decisions this year. If he has no blocking, he needs to learn to fair catch.
Anyone can return a punt when there is a perfect wall. Electric returners can make the first 1 or 2 miss and Stroman just runs away from them

It would really help if Greg Stroman stopped running backwards when returning punts. I know here's trying to create space and make a play, but it usually ends up as negative yardage... And fellow Hokie, despite the great job by the VT "O" in this game, they usually need all the positive yardage position they can get.

This right here is why we NEED a culture change. We've seen what our offense can do when allowed to run rampant, but as soon as we go up multiple scores, we turtle. That's a decision that comes from the very top and sets the tone for the whole program.

Right there with you. We almost couldn't lean on our D to seal a win against what will be the worst offense we face this year. And yet I can't help but think we're going to see the same strategy down the stretch again.
It's CFB's total MO. And none of his assistants or the current AD have the balls to tell him he's wrong and MAKE HIM alter that strategy.
Because it's not their place to. Ultimate responsibility for the outcomes of the games rests with Frank. That's all that matters in evaluating this season and any future he has with the team. But the AD is an administrator, not a coach. And the assistants are paid to do their jobs. Everything, for better or worse, ultimately falls to Frank.
At this point towards the end of Frank's career I would have zero problem chewing him out about his methods. It ain't like he's gonna be here next season anyways.
There's nothing productive or constructive that can happen from Whit "chewing out" Frank. Nothing. If he's on his way out, there's no reason to do something stupid to poison the relationship. If he's sticking around, there's not point in doing something stupid to poison the relationship.
If chewing out Frank in some way causes or FORCES him to use the CORRECT strategy in NOT pulling off the pedal until halfway through the 4th qtr, I would call that pretty damn constructive.
Look, the game was conservative. That's been VT football since Frank took over. That's not going to change and Whit's not going to do anything about it. You seem to have this notion that someone yelling at Frank is going to actually make a difference. This isn't an angry parent with a toddler. It's not how real life works. Shouting matches end up causing discord and disaster. Whit's sole responsibility at this time is to usher Frank out appropriately and bring in a new HC. Whit isn't perfect, but I feel like your criticism of him isn't fair at the moment. He definitely had the "balls" to try and turn around the basketball program as fast as possible and is going to try and the do the same with football. We are in good hands with him at the helm.

By my count, there were 5 PIs by our defense this game.
It would have been nice to not go conservative, MAYBE put up a few more points, and then give Lawson a few plays.
In all honesty, I seriously doubt we see Lawson again this year. None of our games are going to be comfortable enough to throw him in. Burning his redshirt was predicated upon a much different sequence of events this year. Now that the season and bowl streak are in question, and it seems clear that likely none of our games are going to be decided by more than two scores in our favor, Lawson is staying on the sidelines. If somehow we're up 49-0 on UVA (I can dream, right?) then he'll roll in there for a bit. But the next few games are going to be dogfights.
A lot of hate about the second half coaching, but seriously BC could only win if we gave it to them. If there was ever a time to turtle, today was it when we built a multiple score lead against a defense as good as BC.
Enjoy the incompetence while you can. You may be searching for a way to cope without seeing the inconsistency next season.

I'm not miserable. On the contrary I am very pleased the team managed to stick it to Addazio and those "fans" up in BC. It is however perfectly okay to be pissed off at Frank's conservative playcalling which led to sort of an underperformance.

Only Clemson gave BC a worse loss this year by 17. BC may not be very good but nearly every one of their games is close. The second half was boring but kudos to the team for essentially putting the game away by halftime and create a relative stress free win for once.

I am happy we have a rb that can get the first downs to close a game. It was my closed at that point but was nt offense s fault . Can you think of any other back on the roster that could put up over 100 on bc today. Offense is clearly moving in right dir. Not there but def better.
BC has a seriously good run defense and a seriously bad pass defense. No surprise that they climbed back into it once we went run happy in the second half.
But hey, that's the offense we want, right?
I want an offense that can hurt you vertically .. But is based on a strong run game.. We don't have all the pieces yet but we def got the rb.. I am happy for the win and minus a few mistakes here or there it felt a lot more like the old tech .. We aren't there but it was nice not having to hold my breath all game.. I think frank and company did a good job against a solid opponent. And I know everyone will say bc offense stinks but they tryed the running qb plan and we contained it for the first time this year
