Frank Beamer is retiring as head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies at the end of the 2015 seasons after nearly 30 years; but he is not walking away from Virginia Tech. He is likely going to be "special assistant to the athletic director".

That title makes me think Dwight Schrute, Assistant (to the) Regional Manager

not likely. already a done deal
Yeah, I believe this has been in his contract for some time.
Dunno what that means but god that's the least he deserves. He's done more for this athletic program than in any one man in VT history hands down.
Yep. CFB retiring is saving the university a lot of money that we can use to maintain the program. Beamer will live the rest of his life being a VT asset on terms he will enjoy and be very comfortable.
Classy guy, that Frank. Hokie Nation is being well served by him even after he steps down. The Beamer Way....
Hmmm, same title as Kevin Jones...I wonder which will be more special?
Both will be special doing different functions benefiting the athletic department.
All Assistants to the Athletic Director are special, but some Assistants to the Athletic Director are more special than others.
This is already in his contract. He'll serve in this capacity for at least the next eight years.
The best would be CFB going to events around the country for Hokie Clubs and alumni clubs to get new members and raise money.
