Can't believe the coach with the most wins in D1 (active) retiring doesn't get more run. Guess you need to be mired in a scandal to get some run on ESPN: like the Vest, JoPa, or Petrino. A guy who did in the right way and never cut corners get a blip on the ESPN cycle.
But hey...JT Barrett got a DUI, so let's run with that.
Amen.
Meh, I think it's also due to the fact we have been a subpar football team as of late. Between that and having zero national titles, it's a little less compelling to a general audience.
I mean, ESPN cut live to Jerry Kill's retirement press conference...
Kill also retired. Beamer is still coaching
This is the way Beamer would and does want it though.
Sadly the lack of attention paid by ESPN to Beamer's retirement has more to do with VT's prestige being somewhat lessened of late than with the man himself. If Saban was retiring they'd be talking about it 24/7.
If Beamer had won 3 NC's in 4 years and posted ~7 years straight finishing in the top 10, ESPN would be talking about it 24/7.
That's what I was getting at.
I really wanted to catch as much sports talk as I could today because it was a compelling sports weekend. World Series drama, good NFL, good college football and of course Frank Beamer's retirement. I didn't catch too much ESPN but here are my grievances from what I saw:
1) This Morning when Mike and Mike talked to Danny Kanell, Beamer was not discussed. They talked about 2 things, JT Barrett's suspension and the Miami-Duke finish. Mike Greenberg even said, "we have 2 big college football topics today, Barrett and the Miami finish"
2) College Football Live talks for 20 minutes before they get to Frank Beamer where they spend a minute and a half talking about him. They talked about, of course, JT Barrett and Miami-Duke. Host Chris Cotter also gave the "we have 2 big college football stories" line.
3) While the Beamer Press conference is going on, SportsCenter shows Jets-Raiders highlights. However, you could see on the sidebar "Coming Up: Nick Saban Press Conference"
4) The day Spurrier announced his retirement, that is all ESPN talked about. That's it. It led TV shows and was rewarded with much attention.
I get that it was a loaded weekend. But if the active wins leader in FBS announces he's retiring, you have to give it more love than this. He's the modern day Bo Schembechler and (from what I saw) was paid no attention. Or maybe I'm just in my feelings unnecessarily. Maybe Miami-Duke deserves 30 for 30 documentaries and passing mentions of Beamer are all I could expect. If I'm being unreasonable, let me know.
Spurrier also retired immediately, not announcing something that would occur at season's end. That in itself was shocking.
I think this is the reason it hasn't gotten a lot of attention. He's still got a month left to coach, two if we go to a bowl. I think the closer it gets to his final game, the more and more the coverage will grow. It wouldn't surprise me if they make the UVA game a prime time game just for him.
Surprising, ESPN the channel didn't cover much, but they wrote like 4 or 5 articles instantly on their website. I know Maisel and a couple of others wrote multiple topics on it.
That's true. There was a ton of good stuff online about Beamer's retirement from different perspectives. Having said that, even online (and I know this was just a mistake but) I have a hard time getting past this

Not only the mistake, but the fact they made the mistake on the article, on the tweet and how long it took them to correct it.
LACK OF RESPECT! GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER, ESPN!
Hearing Vick talk tears me the f-k up.
ESPN = WTFW (What ever the fuck we want)
Can we sign on Vick for QBs coach and assign him the 757 for recruiting?
I'm glad he came out and talked to the players earlier in the year.
It would not surprise me for the UNC game to be primetime. It will be the biggest news story for the ACC that weekend. No big games for them. Also would not surprise me to see Gameday there out of respect for Beamer and how much that crew likes him.
I'm dead after playing the Mike Vick "you-know" drinking game.
He said it, you know, 16 times in his first response.
Cracks me up.
doesn't bother me 1 bit eSECpn decided not to show this. If they did they would have found a way to spin it as Whit is making Beamer step down or Beamer's health was a deciding factor.
Instead Beamer got to do it his way and in front of the people that matter the most.. his wife, his grand kids, his coaches, his players, and HOKIENATION
