There has been an exchange on Twitter between Coach Buzz and a VT student about the possibility of holding an open scrimmage for students. There were some bets made but it appears that they settled on November 4th at 6:00 PM in Cassell. I'm not sure if it will be open to the general public but Buzz stressed that he wanted to see 200 fans there. I had not seen any mention of it on here so I just wanted to post a separate topic. I'll embed some of the tweets below.
@TeamCoachBuzz Coach, as a treat to students & fans, can we have a scrimmage before the season starts? I can't wait to see the boys play.— Tyler Britt (@tylerbrittt) October 20, 2015
No problem. Organize it. Give me 2 dates to choose from. Bring all ur friends,200 minimum, & I will greet you @ door https://t.co/NDhKzn80ov— Buzz Williams (@TeamCoachBuzz) October 20, 2015
@TeamCoachBuzz If I don't show up with 200 friends, I'll dress up as a UVA fan and you can humiliate me at half time of the 1st home game.— Tyler Britt (@tylerbrittt) October 21, 2015
Awful idea: #hokies NEVER embarrass #hokies. If >200, u & 9 others volunteer @micahsbackpack the month of Jan. Deal? https://t.co/KctjPyY9J7— Buzz Williams (@TeamCoachBuzz) October 21, 2015
Wed,Nov 4th @ 6:00 in Cassell. We're not good enough to give away an entire practice to scrimmage,so we will do both https://t.co/1G3NpJy6rm— Buzz Williams (@TeamCoachBuzz) October 21, 2015
Updated to add quote from Buzz on who can attend:
All #Hokies are welcome, but non-students must bring an item for @micahsbackpack.

That's awesome, it's cool to see Buzz's fan engagement. I really wish I still lived near Blacksburg. I'd be all over this.
Same here this is a really cool opportunity for the fans and the players too.
Wait, so if there are more than 200 folks, then Britt and 9 others volunteer...that seems backwards
Yea I think it was supposed to be less than 200 but I think they should still volunteer regardless. It's pretty cool of Coach Buzz to actually answer back and work with him to arrange an open scrimmage for the students.
I really like this move by Buzz, reminds me the kind of fan involvement Greenberg used to do, but one step further
Also, it would be awesome if we could get someone from TKP to report on the scrimmage. I'm really interested to hear how the team is shaping up.
I mean, I'm not part of TKP but I'm happy to go and post something about it
That would be awesome. Honestly, that's why the forums and capability for people to share their thoughts are here. I love reading reports from people who attend scrimmages, practices, games, etc... for any Tech sport.
I'll make sure and try to make the trip. It'll be fun to see the team. I just wrote an article for our school newspaper about the upcoming season.
I'll go with you, I'm really excited for the season. When was your article published, or was it published yet?
Hasn't been published yet. I think they're printing next week.
So through Twitter I found out that all are welcome to attend and people are encouraged to bring a donation for Micah's Backpack (link to site here). Will also embed tweet in original post.
Buzz has been such a great fit here in Blacksburg. I really enjoy his enthusiasm about basketball and life. He's great with the students and the entire fanbase and I hope he succeeds and sticks around for a good long while.
...and I hope he wins some games. Sooner the better.
It's so disheartening to see all the preseason ACC predictions have us 14th or 15th in a 15 team league. That's frustrating. I know its projected to be an up year in the ACC, but it just looks like this team is much, much better than that.
I'm sure it will look that way until they start to win some ACC games.
I prefer that to rosy predictions and a let-down. Maybe it will give them a helpful chip on their shoulder.
I think my favorite tweet is that second to last where Buzz is open and honest that just become they are scrimmaging doesn't mean the guys get out of practice as well because they aren't good enough to give away a practice!!
Bravo Coach for being open and honest about your team and your attitude towards the season. Makes me respect you as one hell of a man that is truly leading by example and turning boys into men. He is a great example of what a leader should look like at any level in life.
This is still happening right?
Yes, from my understanding of the tweets, my conversation with one of the players, and this Facebook page it is an open practice and intrasquad scrimmage beginning at 6 pm on Wednesday.
Yes
If you're wondering what to get for Micah's backpack they tweeted this
Also their website lists these items (http://micahsbackpack.org/how-can-you-help/)
Spagettios or Ravioli
14.75 oz can or 7.5 oz microwaveable cup Chicken Noodle Soup
10.75 oz can Peanut Butter
(18 oz) 100% Juicebox
Oatmeal (Box with Individual Packages)
Tuna 5 oz
Macaroni and Cheese Singles 2.05 oz
Fruit Chews
Granola Bars
Microwaveable Popcorn
Just a reminder that this event is taking place tonight.
I wish I still lived in Blacksburg. Is anyone planning on writing up a quick report/summary of observations on the scrimmage?
I think dannycaughit17 was planning on doing a summary, and I am willing to help, but it might not be available until the weekend.
Mark Umansky and I will be there tonight for TKP as well.
Try to not write something that will make everyone cry. We are running out of tears.
Maybe Mark can write and I'll take pictures. But then again, that might make us all cry too.
I am fine with shedding tears of joy
Fantastic to see this from Buzz. This guy just flat out gets it.
Gotta love the Buzz.
This is huge. Almost every good basketball school has this, and it looks much more kickass on television then a half empty visitor section behind the opposing bench.
This needs to happen.
Yes. When he said that I was very very happy.
Vines and such videos please! Also anyone care to estimate attendance?
300-500 would be my guess
Buzz said about 350 students
