I'm not necessarily talking about the RR haters or RR lovers, but Hokie Nation as a whole. There are so many of us who want nothing to do with Rich Rod but he's definitely a candidate for the VT job. So let's say we wake up one day and Rich Rod is now the head man for the Hokies. How long would it take the Nation to rally around him?
It'd be one thing if we just didn't think he was a good coach. In that case he could just go 10-0 and we'd all be on board. But so many Hokies just don't like him as a person. It's pretty hard when so many people in our fanbase think he'd be a bad representation for the program. I don't think wins fix that.
So I'm wondering how long it would take the Anti-RichRod club to wrap their arms around him. One thing I've noticed about succeeding a legend is that if the fanbase isn't all-in on you, it's not gonna work. I don't want RichRod, but if he became our coach I'd probably say, "Welp, he's our guy now. We gotta rally around him." I'd feel like I'd have to at least give him a chance.
So what do you think?

Comments
The day he gets fired. But more than likely he will send a GA to the AD with a letter like he did at WVU to say he is running away from another job.
I really hope he gets hired, just so I can see your reaction
Disgust and then supporting the players on the team. Like it will be for any hire, other than RR and Kiffin I would either support or reserve judgment for any other hire until some time had based or I learned more about them. RR and Kiffin will never earn respect because of how they have treated players, AD's, fans and schools in the past.
I 100% agree! RR's past worries me greatly, especially how he bailed on his past teams (even though one was WV) and some of the player criticisms in his departure from Michigan. He's not exactly known for running a squeaky clean program, and his conference record is ghastly since leaving the Big Least (22-34 in 3 yrs at Mich. and 4 yrs. at 'Zona). During this period he has had NCAA infractions and only a single season with an over .500 conference record (7-2 PAC-12). This is not a coach I want replacing CFB!!!
I keep hearing this argument, and don't buy it. Unless he has the moral fiber of Bobby Petrino.
While I've never been a football coach, I was a band director, I was at a small high school and was loved I felt. I had support and my kids would have walked through walls. I got offered a "great job" and took it. I left with tears in my eyes and dollars in my pocket. It was a great pay bump, and went to a huge school with resources I would have never gotten at school A.
I left after 2 years, it was eating my soul. I went back to a smaller school, and eventually left teaching all together.
Morale of the story, I doubt Rich Rod is ignorant, I don't think he would make the same mistake twice.
How many coaches would turn down the Michigan job? Very few I Imagine.
For me at least it's not that he left its how he did it. Sending a GA to the AD with a letter, a ten minute meeting with his WVU players, not coaching the bowl game, calling recruits you want at Michigan before letting the AD at WVU know you are leaving.
This a million times. And if he treats his alma mater like that, imagine how he would possibly treat other teams.
I'll
burncross that bridge when I come to it.You'll burn crosses on bridges?
Heathen.
Probably beating Tennessee would go a long way for most people.
Yup... I will accept any coach who beats them.
This is one of my favorite videos on the internet. I always send it to my Bama friends when the Tennessee game rolls around every October
Just pissed myself. Glad I have a diaper on!
There will be a segment of fans who will be unhappy regardless of who is hired because that new coach won't be Frank. Those fans probably won't warm up to a new coach for a long time.
I agree but those Hokies would warm up to the new coach a lot quicker than they would to Rich Rod
There were people who went nuts over cutting down a few trees to build a practice facility.
You post a lot of non sequiturs, but this one might be the most non sequituriest.
Yep. Those people will need to move on.
Kind of reminds me of when Brett Farve left GB. The new fans weren't huge fans of AR, but it is amazing how they feel about him now.
Change isn't a bad thing. I love Frank, but it had to end sometime and the new coach will need support.
Change is always hard. Just like when Tech starts putting in a new building and you find yourself pissed off and lamenting the fact that they keep tearing up all the green space. Then after they get the landscaping done and the grass comes back, you get used to it and eventually it just becomes the status quo.
RR would be more like a chemistry building where someone screwed up the plumbing. It leaks toxic waste and it doesn't start getting tolerable until you tear the sucker down and ship all the contaminated dirt to somewhere in New Jersey.
Or when they change the name of a building. It's still ChemP to me dammit!
Wait, they've given a name to ChemP, but still haven't figured out what to call New Res East?
The ChemP name is a cop out. "Hahn Hall North" and then Hahn became "Hahn Hall South." Therefore, I still call it ChemP.
Hell, it's still the New Engineering Building to me
you mean durham? Or Goodwin? That one's been used a few times
Signature Engineering Building (Goodwin). We call it da Sig.
I seriously didn't know they ever named it...but then again I graduated back in 2002 so why would I?
As a 07 chemistry grad, I appreciate the simplicity of ChemP and its what I called the building last time I was on campus. Man I miss those times.
Best. Analogy. Ever.
This is how I feel. Every time I go back and something new is up, I just think about how much I want to be an undergrad again.
That would be one hell of a hire for Rutgers.
Why you gotta be mean to NJ? What NJ do to you? You know what...
I think what he's saying is that after RR leaves Blacksburg he'll be coaching at Rutgers.
3-pete natty's would get me to consider being on board with RR
Reasonable.
At minimum.....eight pete.
ha ha j/k
perhaps a dominating ACCCG win and season.....doesn't have to be national championship but has to show that VT is legit and didn't "squeak" by any teams.
I will say that if RichRod winning would be enough for the Hokie fanbase to (generally) unite around Rich Rodriguez, then that would mean "RR is a bad representation of our program" crowd is much smaller than I thought it was.
what choice do they have? Heck, if VT hires RR I'll piss and moan about it for the rest of the off-season but come game time in week 1 I'll be standing in the bleachers watching intently and anxiously to see what we have in our football team. His leash will be incredibly short. First loss will have me going on "I-told-you-so" rants. After about the 3rd loss I'll really be givin' ya'll hell.
I don't really like RR but the real reason that I don't want him here is because I just don't think he's really that great of a coach. He had a handful of good seasons against mediocre competition 10 years ago. He surprised some people last year and turned in a pretty good looking season but tore it all down again when he failed to build on that this year. I honestly don't see how anything would be any different in Blacksburg. In fact, with how divided this fan base seems to be regarding him, I think VT as a program would struggle even more than I'm afraid of due to lack of fan support.
I'm just giving this scenario...If someone doesn't like RR as a guy and that's the #1 reason they don't like him, I would think those people would want to see how he behaves himself. How he acts, how interacts with the community, etc.
If he's winning ball games and he's exhibiting the same qualities that made those people not like him in the first place then he's still the same guy they hate. They hate him because they think he's a jerk....then he's still the same jerk and he's going 11-1 but they like him now?...it must not have actually bothered them that he's a jerk.
well...everyone likes their own @$$hole but they hate everyone else's. Right now RR is Arizona's @$$hole so people hate him. If/When he becomes VT's @$$hole people will probably come around because at that point he'll be our @$$hole
Yeah, that would be my takeaway. It's like the thread we have here about "would you accept Urban Meyer if he wanted to coach here?"
I thought, "of course, who wouldn't want Urban Meyer?" and then I read many of the posts saying they wouldn't want him as coach.
yeah I'd take Urban. Not RR. All things being equal, Urban is going to beat RR 9/10 on the field. My biggest beef with RR is that he's just not nearly good enough to justify his other shortcomings that people hate him for.
The Schwartz is strong with this one..
How long it takes hokie fans to warm to Rich Rod. Well, I think Saban will be ice skating around his summer home.
Forever? Forever ever? Forever ever.
Forever never seems that long until you're grown...
Consider me in the anti-RichRod camp, but as I said back on another thread, I will give him the opportunity to change my mind about him. I think he is an average coach with a bad reputation and personality. If he wins on the field, treats our players and recruits well, and proves himself to be a good citizen among the team, the University, and the fans, I will change my stance. I would give him the first season to evaluate his personality, and at least 2-3 years to evaluate his coaching and recruiting abilities. Can't speak for the rest of the fan base, but that's just me.
Despite any consternation about the head guy, I will always 100% support whoever takes the field in uniform for our team. No question.
pretty much
an ACC championship
And in the playoff once every 5 years - or thereabouts.
I wouldn't.
I'd embrace him the day he stepped on campus. I fucking love VT football and if
SabanSatan himself was the coach, I'd still watch. I would just seriously question the AD's decision making and hope that he knows WAY MORE THAN ME. He probably does. Most people....a 9 or 10 win season.
When the cows come home.... No but seriously just give me some consecutive wins. I wouldn't mind RR but that's just me.
My high school offensive line coach used to say, "Never is a long f-cking time."
Huh, mine just used to chew me out and spit his concoction of chew, dip, and bubble gum in my face in the process. Ah nostalgia.....
Ive been reading about all the coaching candidates.I just dont believe RichRod would be a splash hire (Long run or Short run). Yea yea he has connections in the area we recruit in. I know he has worked under Whit. (How'd that workout Whit!?!?). I just dont believe RichRod would be our guy. However on a positve side, Im reeeaaallly intrigued by two of the possible candidates. First and foremost Id like to express interest in Chad Morris, Im sure my fellow Tkpers would agree that anybody who goes 3~0 against bud and D bring them on board. Secondly what i read on Mr. Tom Herman, He will thrive off of his drive alone. Its definately something we can appreciate being apart of this program.
9 win seasons and 4-5 of the top 10 recruits in VA. I fully understand that isn't a reasonable standard for a coach, but RR just... bothers me to imagine in maroon and orange
Criteria for accepting RichRod:
1. RichRod needs to wipe that fucking smirk/sneer off his face. Seems like it's always there, and it makes him seem like a snake oil selling jackass.
2. Totally change his personality to fit our family culture.
3. Just win baby.
When RichRod does those three things (my money is on him failing to even do number 1), then he will be acceptable.
I did a google image search to put a photo in my post, this was the first result, and then I saw that he's got THE SAME DAMN LOOK IN BASICALLY EVERY PICTURE, so it was probably unnecessary to include one.
Just say No to Rich Rod!!!
Must be thinking about how he's going to throw his QB under the bus at the post-game presser.
Someone alert Frank - I finally found the person that farted!
I don't mean to be inflammatory, but enough with these posts: what if this coach, that coach, etc. etc. makes me want to barf. It's just me but I really don't intend to visit any more of these sites until it's all done. And, yeah, I know it's fun, and an exciting time, whatever. Been there, done that.
Wait what? So you don't want a discussion board to discuss potential new HC? Something most of Hokienation has never been through and VT has never been through in the Internet age.
Hehe! You make sense, but enough for me until it's done. I'm wondering more about a bowl trip or not.
That's the wonderful thing about the human being... it has the mental capacity to concern itself with more than one issue at once.
I think you meant to be inflammatory. I picked up on it right around "barf".
The only time this guy had any success was in a Big East in which the best teams at the time (VT, Miami, BC) all bolted for the ACC. Everything since then has been average at best. The only way I'm could stomach this is if they can keep Bud and the defensive staff around.
Close to the rest of my life
People don't really change. Their perspectives may change. Circumstances they find themselves in my change, but inherently people do not change past maturity. RR is what he is. To me, he is not a viable candidate.
What in the world do you think "we" are if not our perspectives?
I would say an emphatic "NO" simply based on the fact alone he was tainted by that sh*thole town in Worst Va. Just by that fact alone Alum07 shouldn't be supportive of him coming here. There ain't NO WAY we're gonna get stuck and slapped with Worst VaU shitty, sloppy seconds leftovers. Just f-k no.
I wonder if he is the Seth Greenberg of football. Likely to get good results, but with an abrasive personality.
Unless my position on RichRod isn't abundantly clear by now - I will embrace him the day he signs his first Top 10 recruiting class.
Accepting RR as head coach would be harder than making a U-turn with this truck...
This thread just keeps on popping up. Why on earth is it still a thing...
It needs to disappear almost as much as RR as a candidate needs to disappear.
About as long as it takes to include the word "firing", though I hope it does not take this type of disaster to unite us.
This disaster would not unite Hokie Nation. That is certain.
I meant to imply we would be united on the "firing" part after his supporters see what he would actually do to the program.
OK, sorry I missed your point. Leg!
I refuse to believe that Whit would consider making a move that would create such an incredible level of frustration in the fan base and an incredibly short leash in terms of fan support.
Would go against every other decision he has made since coming to VT. For that reason I am going to stop giving this possibility the time of day and assume that Rich Rod is not an option at VT.
I would rather swim naked across the most piranha infested portion of the Amazon River with a steak tied to my genitals than see RR named head coach.
In short: I'm with French.
No gif's, please.
I didn't know French did that. I thought he ate those steaks he was buying...boy was I wrong. And here I was thinking French just loved him some steaks.
Huh, no idea French went fishing for piranha. Thought he was more of a drum guy. At least it sounds like he's found a new bait that should work really well. Can't wait for the OT thread about that experience!
Winning would solve all problems.
If Frank had gone 8/9 wins last few years, we wouldnt be having this convo.
I'd accept him now. Guy can coach and in other Hokie circles he is not nearly as despised as he is on this board. Guy at work played for RR at WVU (beat VT 2x's) and he loves the man. Said most of the WVU players talk about him much the same VT players talk about Bud...he is intense but he knows his stuff. I say bring him to VT and lets get this team going!
Only 4 seasons with 10 or more wins. 4 soon to be 5 seasons with less than 8 wins. 4-5 in bowl games.
The bowl wins are probably about on par with what we've been used to....maybe a better win %.
I'm not really trying to change anyone's mind, the question was how long would it take to come on board with RR and I said for me it is now.....I'm sure that he has kicked cats and pushed old ladies down at the mall and other assorted crimes against humanity that people on this board are far better informed than I am....and I only know one person that happens to have a relationship with the guy, so that is just my $.02
all of his personality traits and past track record notwithstanding, the man isn't as great a coach as you seem to think. He's not a bad coach, but VT can do a whole lot better
If we need any longer than 3 seconds to embrace our new HC, Whit did it wrong. Now's the time for everyone to hop back on the bandwagon and get some momentum going into 2016. When else will the excitement and buzz around the program be at this level? This is the guy who follows the guy. It's Whit's first football hiring at a football school. He's crushed everything he's done so far everywhere he's been. He absolutely needs to get this one right, and right from day one. Whit needs to hire a guy who's good both short- and long-term. Get people pouring money into the Hokie Club and buying season tickets, get a top-notch staff assembled, get recruits on board and go win a whole bunch of games.
So for my own understanding, can you please tell me how the others listed as potential "head coach" material have better records than RR? Seems that most of the people listed have either very short head coaching careers or are coordinators.
the other candidates are riskier, yes, but the results that they have produced are on track to exceed RRs. RR has had 4 good-great seasons in 27 years of coaching. 3 of those came a decade ago against pretty mediocre competition. If you don't consider last year's blip in the last decade RR has been seriously ineffective as a coach. I don't have a lot of confidence that he'll come in to VT and build a consistently competitive program here.
I'd much rather take a shot on one of the younger guys who knows he still has to prove himself and will work and fight tooth and nail to put out the highest quality football he can. That motivation and work ethic alone puts them higher on my list than RR.
27 seasons? I see that he has been head coach for 14yrs as HC (WVU, UM, UA). Are you including Glenville and Salem? I would rather look at D1 for comparison sake and in those jobs he has a .615 win %.
there's this fantastic feature on this site. It's called the reply button It looks like this " reply >>" Please click it on the comment to which you'd like to reply. Not doing so invalidates a bunch of other cool features that Joe has worked hard to incorporate in this site.

Everyone seems to be convinced this is what will happen if Rich Rod comes to town:
When hell freezes over!
