Ross Martin of CarolinaBlue.com reported Hokies' verbal commitment and Winston Salem, NC (Mount Tabor) product Divine Deablo will take an official visit to North Carolina this weekend. The Tar Heels host Miami on Saturday. Deablo committed to the Hokies over the Tar Heels on July 27th.

This one would/will hurt more than Patterson, hopefully we can keep him on board. Can't blame him at all for at least investigating what others have to offer.
Why would it hurt more than Patterson? They're essentially equal recruits, but Patterson breaks us into Bayside which is huge

offers are more influence by team need, location and positional value. service ratings, while not perfect, are more reliable.
But aren't service ratings often influenced by number (and quality) of offers?
not really. look at a site like rankbyoffers.com and compare it to 247.
We're comparing two WR of similar size from the same region here. Quality of offers is absolutely a valid way to compare them. One of them impressed the coaches from elite programs. The other didn't. That doesn't mean that Deablo will light the world on fire and Patterson will fizzle, but odds are that DD will be a better college player than PP.

The thing about solely looking at offers is that you have no idea whether or not they're commit-able, or if they even exist. schools aren't able to confirm or deny if they sent an offer. some schools like tennessee send out offers to anyone with a pulse. we know virginia tech isn't one of those schools. so you get a guy like tim settle who gets an offer from virtually every school in the country. thats great because at one point he was a top 10 prospect. then he gets out of shape and schools start losing interest. his rating drops from a top 10 5* grade to a top 150 mid grade 4* (except for ESPN which is lazy as hell). the offers don't go away now, so it looks like hes better than he actually is if you rely on offers
That was in response to your statement that recruiting site ranking are more reliable than offer lists. Of course offer lists have their own issues with accuracy and completeness, and it takes a bit of work to stay up to date with developments like Settle's star fading a bit. But guaranteed his offer list shrank as much or more than his recruiting rankings. His final 5 was evidence of that.
But the point is that the professionals whose jobs rely on acquiring talented players for their teams are the ones who issue the offers. Journalists whose jobs rely on hyping the next hot thing are the ones who give out recruiting rankings.

because DD is a much better prospect? They both have multiple P5 offers, but Deablo's list is more impressive.
They both have offers from VT, UNC, Duke, UVA, WF, ECU, PSU, and Tennessee..
but Deablo also has offers from Clemson, OSU, Notre Dame, Florida, Louisville, NCSU, USC-E, and WVU while Patterson also has offers from Navy, Vandy, SDSU, and Illinois
I agree that Deablo looks like a better player, but what's it matter now? Neither are committed here.

People get hung up on that word too often. Anything prior to NSD isn't a commitment.
It's hard to blame any future player for reconsidering their options after Frank's announcement. I hope we bring in a new coach that will instill faith in the recruits and keep a lot on board. Until then I have no issue with each of them re-evaluating until they know who the coach will be.
I honestly don't blame any recruit that wants to open things back up after the coach they made a connection with might not be there anymore. We are just going to have to weather the storm this recruiting cycle. It will probably be one of the worst in a long time.
So pretty much everyone he agreed to come and play for likely won't be here by the end of the year, let alone signing day, and you want to question his commitment?

I agree with you. That's why I disagree with the system of Verbal Commitments. It means "consider your scholarship slot filled, assuming my adolescent mind doesn't change between now and Feb of next year. Also, I'll see these other schools to evaluate the options that my 'commitment' was supposed to eliminate. That's cool, right? Yeah, I thought so."
I developed special software in my brain, specifically for the Recruiting Forum, that auto-replaces the words "verbal commitment" with "verbal non-commitment" on my screen. Problem solved. There is a glitch though, in that every time the software sees the word "stars," I black out.
At this point I would imagine all our commits are reevaluating their decision, and rightfully so.
Not to say these threads are in any way bad -- obviously discuss whatever you like -- but I'll be a lot more interested in the 2016 class after we see who the new coaches are.
Yep, schools like Florida and Michigan had terrible classes last year by their standards because of coaching change, it's just the nature of the beast.
And look how they are doing.....recruits may leave but a good hire will also bring in other recruits to counter losses. It's not like we are going to go without all our scholarships filled. We'll get people.
Exactly. Honestly I'm more concerned on how the new coach does with the 2017 class than the 2016 class at this point.
I'm more concerned with the 2020 class than either the '16 or '17 class. That will really tell whether there has been any substantive improvement.
The only thing i'd tack on is that Florida and Michigan are much deeper teams. Those two schools in particular attract top talent even when a mumbling bum is their head coach, which is insane to me.
I'm not too surprised with the turnaround at either school. I think we'll be a longer re-build, with the lack of depth we have now. I hope we can at least maintain cordial relationships with all of our commits until we decide on a new head coach and let them iron out the details when the time comes.
I haven't watched a second of this kids tape, no idea what kind of player he is. I want to inform the innocent bystanders around me during a tech game, that thee divine devil just caught that streaking touchdown pass.
Its also not like we're breaking up a top 10 recruiting class or anything like that. Some of our commits are good prospects no doubt, but we've already swung and missed on a lot of our top targets and some of the ones still left (like Dickerson and Holloway) seem to have been trending away from us for a while now anyways.
I actually think this may help us keep Landon, he seems like a smart kid who understood Frank wasn't going to be around much longer. A new coach can sell him on sticking around for at least 3-5 years
Well, no biggie- guess is that the new coach will either reel these guys back in or his staff will jump on a couple more very good prospects. Especially given that the new coach should be a high level recruiter and well aware of the WR depth issues.
Agree and no matter who the coach is, we still have huge WR need and immediate playing time to offer. The good news is that we'll know who our coach is as soon as the regular season is over and that gives a couple months for the new guy to reconnect with commitments and targets.

Yes. But at least we can be pretty safe in assuming that UNC would never do anything as untoward hiring as hookers to entertain recruits...it is a public ivy after all.
