And The Hits Keep Coming

A source said it’s unlikely Harris will be able to qualify at Tech because of lingering transcript issues with the NCAA, but that he could end up playing at Florida State.

So no Fisher, no Harris, loss of several big recruits from VA this cycle...it's been a rough few weeks. I think we could all use some good news soon.

I'm so confused, if he has lingering transcript issues, how is it that FSU can allow him to play and we can't?

Because Free $hoes University.

Because FSU will gladly accept eligible JUCO players who were ineligible out of high school and VT hasn't done that for 10+ years.

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

This isn't that big of a surprise, given the drawn-out saga we had already seen. I was basically counting on not having Harris available. It's a shame, but that's life in the college game. I'm with StevenSorrell, though - how can he qualify for FSU but not VT? I thought qualification was determined at the NCAA level, not individual institutions.

"Exit light..."

I've heard that we have some unwritten rule that we won't take players who have to go to JUCO after not qualifying through high school and prep school, which might be why.

I've heard that too, but I have never heard the "why" behind that rule. Is it a CFB thing? Or a VT Athletics thing?

Long time listener...first time poster

I thought it was an ACC thing, which must be untrue if FSU is an option.

Definitely not an ACC thing. One example is Sylvester Williams, who played for UNC the past two years; he was a JUCO transfer.

Didn't Gus Gilchrist decommit from us a few years ago in basketball and they didn't let him play at UMD the next year because it was within the ACC? Why wouldn't that apply here?

Rip his freaking head off!

As far as I know, Harris never signed his LOI, so was never on scholarship here so we can't dictate what he is allowed to do.

"Exit light..."

He didn't sign a NLOI for us and so he's essentially a free agent.

If Harris doesn't end up playing for VT, I believe it is a blessing in disguise. I don't care how much talent this guy might have, if you have THIS MUCH TROUBLE getting yourself even qualified, I have no idea why VT would keep pursuing this guy. All I've ever heard is that this guy is bad news, and I'm frankly happy to be (mostly) rid of this saga.

I haven't heard anything about him, but I'll ask around the PSU folks up here. A lot are very active in their discussion boards, so I'll see if anyone has the low down on him.

Hey, we got a solid QB comment over the last few weeks with Andrew Ford. It aint that bad. We'll all feel better after second summer camp, we always seem to get a good haul after camp, recruiting season is far from over.

Another silver lining. Look at Maddy and Nicoles, they were late 2* commits. We'll get ours on D, even if the recruiting sites don't know them. Our Middle line-backer was a walk-on. Being a Hokie has never been about the glitz and glammer. It has been about hitting hard with a chip on the shoulder. The more recruites we get like that the better.

AMEN!

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

To an extent I agree but to take the next step forward (consistently challenging to be in national title game, soon playoffs) it seems there needs to be a better mix of blue chip and chip on the shoulder prospects.

Couldn't agree more with this statement. I also understand the sentiment that we need better talent to get over the hump. But highly-touted players don't necessarily mean great production on the field. Let's look at all of the 4 & 5 star players from 2004-2008 in VA:

2004: Olu Hall, Kent Hicks, Sean Glennon, Jerod Mayo, Chris Long

2005: Victor Harris, Vic Hall, Deveon Simmons, Elan Lewis, Todd Nolan, Pat Sheil, Stephen Friday

2006: Percy Harvin, Vidal Hazelton, Damon McDaniel, Chris Bell, Jarrell Miller, Alex Stadler, Brent Vinson, Dedrick Epps, Sean Gottschalk, Brandon Minor, John Graves

2007: Tyrod Taylor, Peter Lalich, Jamar Jackson, J'Courtney Williams, Jay Smith, Cris Hill, Blake DeChristopher, Terence Fells-Danzer, Andrew Nuss, Bradley Starks

2008: EJ Manuel, Ryan Williams, Mike Glennon, Quinton Coples, Vinston Painter, Marcus Dowtin, Deion Walker, Kerry Boykins, DJ Coles, Dyrell Roberts, Bobby Massie

Of course there are a couple of guys that I would have wanted to play for VT but most of these guys ended up not being impact players.

Said "who" on most of those kids. Just goes to show their end result...

It's funny you say that because that's what we chanted about Jay Smith in high school. He was supposed to be a one man wrecking crew and my hs shut him down and won 13-0.
Definitely a bunch of what could have beens on this list though.

Yeah, I know what you mean...

Todd Nolen was Tyrod Taylor's favorite target his sophomore season at Hampton, really the guy who helped TT really start to get some serious attention, and was a really good receiver. He went to prep school for a year then bounced around JUCOs for 2 or 3 years, just trying to qualify.

Also, Elan Lewis broke all sorts of VHSL state records at Phoebus before coming to Tech, but he was plagued by injuries and never made an impact on the field.

I just can't stand the thought of LOLUVa landing any more of the Commonwealth's top talent this cycle.

I don't care about any player that wants to go to LOLUVA. There is no reason pertaining to football to want to go to UVA. Terrible coaching, terrible tradition. Even though it's a top-25 academic school, most firms won't take their players seriously for jobs/internships because they know that he (probably) couldn't get into UVA on academic merit (that's probably a dick thing to say, there are some scholarship players that are pretty smart but I'm talking about from a general standpoint).

Simply put, if a player signs with UVA it means he doesn't care about football. Period. I don't want any player who doesn't care about football to ever play for Virginia Tech.

They can continue to produce four-star busts. I'm happy with the two-stars who go to Tech and make the NFL.
