Attention Windows 7 Users: Bad Windows 7 Update

I work in the software support office for the college of engineering. This morning a lot of people came in with computers that had updated themselves with update KB3097877. Once this update is installed, you can't log in, the login screen flashes, and there seems to be a 50/50 chance at system restore fixing the issue.

If you're running Windows 7, I would suggest you either turn off updates for now or uncheck and hide KB3097877.

EDIT: Looks like it's just if you have a touchscreen.

Attention Windows 7 users: it's time to move on.

As a side note op do you work in SWAT?

Yes.

Nice! Worked there the four years I was at Tech.

And then there's Windows 10....
The last automatic mandatory update resulted in the Start button and browser to become unresponsive and I had to reinstall at a former recovery point, which is amazing for a technophobic old guy like me.

For me, the worst part about Win 10 (upgraded from Win 7) is how it goes to sleep after 3 mins (when not running apps in the foreground), no matter how I tweak all the settings I can find. I've looked at every forum topic I can find, and no dice. Other than that, it is a pretty great operating system.

Edit:
***Update has seem to have resolved the issue; I'm really enjoying Windows 10 overall***

So far I love Windows 10. I have an Asus Transformer, and Windows 10 is an amazing OS for hybrid devices like that. My old HP laptop is a little buggy running 10, but it was also a little buggy running Windows 8, and is actually less buggy since the update to 10. I have the same unresponsive Start button/Cortana issue, but only when it's been running for a while (days), and then a reboot always fixes the issue.

I think like most OSes, Windows 10 works best on devices on which it was the first install. I'm convinced upgrading always brings bugs along with it. (Still, my Transformer was updated from 8, and I've had basically no issues at all on that device.)

When I worked in SWAT at VT we weren't allowed to do upgrade installs. We always did clean installs and if the person upgraded on their own we wiped the computer and started over.

I actually like doing clean installs now on all of my computers and do it every couple of months to keep things fresh.

Precisely haha

That's a recurring problem for me, the Start menu and taskbar freezing completely.

Did you upgrade to 10 or did it come preinstalled? I upgraded both my computers, one from 8.1 and the other from 7. The one that I upgraded from 7 is the one that always has the problem, so I'm planning to do a clean install some time soon and see if that helps.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Clean install is the way to go. Just make sure you write down all the programs you've installed and backup your data.

I have two HDDs installed. I keep all my documents, music, and pictures on the secondary disk, so they shouldn't be affected in any way.

Also, I keep all my installation files in a separate folder on the primary drive that I'm going to move over to the secondary. The big ones (Office, web browsers, etc.) will be put back first.

This will actually be my first time doing a clean install solely because I want to, not because I have to.

That's the way to go! Installing because you want to is a great feeling. You get to make your computer feel like new again and know there's no leftover junk slowing things down.

Are we going to gripe about OSes with a 7 in the name? Because I'm sticking with CentOS 6 solely because the lack of 32-bit support in 7 means I can't run Wine without doing a lot more fiddling than I care to do.

CentOS 6 was pretty solid; I used that back at VT to run some stuff in their visualization lab, but it's never been my favorite. Debian and Fedora were always OK for me, hated RedHat when forced to use it, and my go-to is Ubuntu. It seems to do everything I need quite well.

Nope.

I'm in cyber Intel, but I'm on leave. So whatever this guy says, maybe do it. Hope this helps.

FYI, here is a reddit thread with different suggestions on fixing it if you have been affected: https://np.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/3scyef/windows_7_ultimate_cant_login_at_all/
Short answer is if you have a touchscreen monitor unplug the usb cable that provides the touch functionality and reboot. If you are on a tablet or laptop you will have to either remote into the machine to uninstall the patch or boot into safe mode and uninstall it through the command line. Directions for both are in the above link.

But wait, I thought the issue was just for touchscreens...

Thanks for posting this. The install was set to automatically update last night when I shut down my computer, but I saw this thread before I left work. I was able to turn off the automatic update and left it pending.

Would had been a bad day at work today if that update installed last night.
