Let's Talk Bowl Games

With 5 wins and LOLUVA still to play, it's safe to say we have bowl eligibility wrapped up. My question, do you think Frank's last game is enticing enough to the higher up bowls? I don't think there will be any trouble selling it out, would probably get a little ratings bump on the TV.

Honestly unsure what the order is, but you gotta think that either the Music City/Belk Bowl would be very interested in that.

Please God no. Shreveport, Louisiana is about the most unattractive destination I can think of for a bowl trip.

yes but sentimental value!?!

Probably just the part about Frank's bowl game streak.

I can't embed the tweet, but Belk Bowl just recently asked how they could help out with #GameDay4Frank and I responded by saying that they could have us in the bowl. If we do make it a bowl game, fans are definitely going to travel well. It adds a lot if incentives, for sure. I would love to make a trip to Nashville or Charlotte.

Awesome! Charlotte's 3 hours from Bristol. Nashville is 4 and a half. Detroit is 9... Don't know that I could make the trip up there! But it's good to see their social media's teams getting involved and that they're seeing that our fans are passionate. I just want the streak to continue so that I can keep saying that I'm "bowl-streak years old".

Your first sentence has me filled with all kinds of bad juju.

"Exit light..."

The possibility of a team playing for nothing against a team playing for everything is always a scary matchup. UVA aside, I haven't seen anything that gives me confidence that we can roll over anyone left on our schedule.

Agreed. Please edit that. UVA is decent. And it would be the worse way for Beamer to go out, which is just scary to think about.

Its all set up for something like that to happen

A true hokie fan never back tracks on a uva diss.

Let's not. Not yet at least.

Hmm. Bowl game in Nashville. I might be able to swing that if it happens. Or Charlotte. Something to start planning for.

I'll take any bowl that I preordered. : Charlotte, Jacksonville, Nashville, DC, NYC, Orlando and Atlanta.

They sell them through Hokie Tickets. I can preorder any bowl as a season ticket holder.

Got it. Being close to Charlotte I'd like to hedge a bet on going to Frank's last game. I don't want to go all in on Belk Bowl tickets if they don't go. I got dirt cheap Orange Bowl tickets in 2011 and tried to sell them but couldn't. Learned my lesson on that one.

The way I looked at it was this. It cost me like 10 dollars to "pre order" tickets to certain bowl games. I realize I might pay more but with a game in Charlotte I bet I'll pay less than the open market for Beamers last game.

Let's let the bowl game be a happy surprise, if it happens.

EDIT: OK, now it happened. Let the bowl game talk continue.

Going to the Belk Bowl would be nice....and it means we do get to Charlotte this season after all.

LET'S TALK BOWL GAMES

How bout we talk UNC first?

Well if that's the case then lets only talk about Coach Beamer through remainder of the year and his staff and no about other rumors and lose focus due to speculation of future decisions.

It's all just something to talk about.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Looked at the order of bowl selection (http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/82568/game-times-for-acc-bowl-tie-ins)

Russell Athletic Bowl gets the first selection of ACC teams (or Notre Dame) after playoff committee and NY6 bowls. Likely they pick Notre Dame if they don't get a playoff or NY6 pool, second choice likely FSU.

Next choice is pool 1 of ACC bowls

Pool 1 = Belk, Pinstripe , Sun (Please no!)... and Music City OR Tax Slayer Bowl (ACC only gets 1 of them)

After that there are the Pool 2 bowls

Pool 2 = Quick Lane, Military, Independence, St. Peterburg

My optimistic assumptions are:

  • Clemson is in playoffs, Notre Dame gets a NY6, FSU goes Russell.
  • VT gets to 7-5, winning last 2(#GameDay4Frank!!!!!!!). Pitt beats Louisville so that UL is 7-5 as well. NC State ends up at 7-5 losing to FSU and UNC. Miami loses to both UNC and Pitt to go 7-5. Think VT with Beamer's last game as a sell out makes VT the most attractive 7-5 team
  • Then that leaves Duke, UNC, and Pitt as having better records than VT, see them being selected for 3 of the pool 1 bowls with one of the Pool 1 bowls being left over for VT.
  • VT has never played in the Pinstripe or Belk Bowls, those would be the ones I'd root for VT to go to.

But with the "pools" bowls don't have to pick best record first correct?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

That's correct but think ACC would still have the idea of merit in there. Would be surprising to see Pitt, Duke, or UNC get past pool 1 without a complete implosion w/ 1 of them. Hard to see a 6-6 VT team in pool 1 in my opinion.

If I'm on a bowl committee I'm also weighing fan support possibly more heavily than record. Do you think that even 1,000 Duke football fans would make the trip to NY, Texas, or anywhere outside of NC? Does Duke football even have 1,000 fans? They cant even half fill their high school sized stadium. UNC and Pitt have slightly better fan support but none of those teams would bring even 1/2 the fans as VT, especially with it being Beamer's last game.

Within the Tier 2 pool, a bowl can select whoever they want. An 8-4 Duke team would not need to be picked over a 7-5 VT team for the Belk bowl. I think.

They don't have to necessarily pick the best record, but I think they have to pick someone within 1 win of the best record among available teams. i.e., they could pick a 6-win team over a 7-win team, but not over a team with 8.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Thinking about it more if I was the Taxslayer Bowl I'd be all over a VT game if VT gets to 7-5. Taxslayer bowl had the last game for Bobby Bowden and think it would be a great tie in for them if they had the last game for Frank Beamer.

It's been 10 years since VT was last in the Gator bowl but VT had quite the history appearing there 5 times during the bowl streak which is the most of any bowl.

The game also being on January 2nd makes it attract more attention to the program. Also helps with recruiting that the game is in Florida against an SEC team.

Imagine if the next coach is Justin Fuente and the bowl matchup is VT vs Ole Miss.

Good lord. Why. Can you edit that first sentence out please. Football gods are a real thing. Did you not watch the Michigan State-Nebraska game?

how about we go ahead and win another freaking game first...we got all the help we could get from a terrible team to squeak out a close win last night. UNC and LOLUVA are better teams than GT. That's right GT is worse than LOLUVA...let that sink in for a minute. Nothing is guaranteed. I'm not talking about bowls until VT has 6 wins.

Onward and upward

If we win out I think we will be in the Tax Slayer (Gator) bowl. If we go 6-6 then I think it will be the Belk Bowl. The Pinstripe bowl would also be a possibly if the Belk takes NC State (UNC opened the year there so they would likely be out).

Let me see if I can make sense of this.

Clemson will either be in the Playoff or the Peach Bowl if they lose a game in the regular season. If Clemson only loses the ACC-CG, they probably still would be a "Selection Committee Bowl Game At Large Selection." UNC/Pitt would be in the Peach and Clemson would be in the Fiesta.

We want Notre Dame to lose no more than 1 game. If they lose 0 games, they are possibly in the Playoff. If they lose one game, they are a "SCBGALS" and probably are in the Peach or Fiesta. We don't want ND to lose 2 games, then they fall into the ACC Bowl Pecking Order. We don't want that.

The next best team goes to Orlando for the RAB. That will almost certainly be FSU if ND is a SCBGALS.

The next is Tier 2 of the next 4 teams for the Belk, Pinstripe, Sun and Gator (or Music City). I believe those 4 teams are determined by overall record. VT needs to be 7-5 for this to be a relevant conversation, so let's assume UNC loses to VT and Clemson in the ACC-CG.

UNC 10-3
Duke (Currently 6-3, plays v. Pitt, @ UVA, WF). Seems like 8-4 is a likely scenario for them.
Pitt (Currently 6-3, plays @Duke, v.Lville, v.Miami) Seems 8-4 or maybe 7-5 is likely.
Miami (Currently 6-3, plays @UNC, v. GT, @Pitt) Seems 7-5 is likely
Lville (Currently 5-4, plays UVA, @Pitt, @Kentucky) Seems 7-5 is likely
NCSU (Currently 6-3, plays @FSU, SU, UNC) Seems 7-5 is likely

So, if ND loses 1 or none games; if UNC loses to Clemson in ACC-CG, VT would need to win out and make sure that no more than 3 of the 6 teams listed above get above 7 wins. That would put VT in the Tier 2 and end up in a good bowl (as long as it isn't the Sun). I would personally love any of them.

I think that's how it works, but it's a new system so I may not have a good grasp on it yet.

Jumping on the bandwagon of people begging you to edit that first sentence. I hate admitting it, but beating UNC is going to be a long shot and UVA is anything but a mat for this struggling VT team to walk over this year. The bad karma is killing me

Fox Sports Prediction

This one has us going to the Pinstripe, doesn't make sense regionally. But it is a 3-6 bowl game, Belk bowl is 3-8 which makes more sense. Other rankings are available as well. BELK has wanted us, so Music City for a little bit so let's see what happens.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

If we actually win our, we'd slide in somewhere from 6-8 in the conference. Either really makes sense at that point. Realistically, I'd say 8th is more likely.

You would think the Pinstripe would prefer Pitt or L'ville with those old Big East ties.

But I would love the Pinstripe, probably the bowl I'm most likely to attend.

Rivalry games are never a lock. I'd like to see us in a cool bowl game. New Era Pinstripe Bowl? All the other bowls that others have suggested are pretty cool though.

I don't know if I'd consider UNC to be a rivalry game.

Also: Does the picture show up? I'm currently riding in a car on my way back to Blacksburg and mobile is weird.

Win out and we end up in the Belk. Lose to UNC, and Beat Crappy UVA we end up in Independence,

As much as I hate to talk about this until it is not a done deal. Besides the traffic situation, the Military Bowl worked really well in traveling... just saying.

Man, if we can somehow get into the Music City bowl...I would love to spend a few days in Nashville around the holidays, hit up some honky tonks and see some live music, do some whiskey tasting, and watch Tech take on an SEC team in Frank's last game.

As a biased NJ native, I'm rooting for the Pinstripe Bowl. I just think it'd be cool to watch the Hokies play in Yankee stadium.

Before we start talking bowl games, let's focus on beating UNC and/or LOLVUA. The Cavs have a very good chance (just threw up in my mouth a little...) of making this game competitive this time around, so we most certainly do NOT have bowl eligibility all but wrapped up.

Basically (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) ND is out of the playoff picture and can be taken by another NY6 bowl (entirely possible). If Clemson beats UNC, they go to the CFP and probably UNC to NY6, which gives us a clean path to Belk. If UNC beats Clemson, all hell breaks loose. Hopefully at least one of either UNC or Clemson goes to NY6, because if not, then Clemson (12-1), UNC (12-1), FSU (10-2), Pitt (8-4), and Miami (8-4) are in front of us and that fills all 5 of the tier one bowls since by selection rule our 6-6 record can only jump a 7-5 team, not anyone 8-4 or better.

And our butts end up in Shreveport or something.

Belk Bowl reps are probably crossing their fingers for a Clemson win, because inviting VT is easy money. Will sell out in a heartbeat. Could you imagine the draw of a VT-Auburn Belk Bowl?

"Exit light..."

Bigger question: can we defeat Aub in in the Belk Bowl?

If there's one thing I've learned from this team this year, it's that predicting outcomes is a foolish proposition.

"Exit light..."

Auburn... the colors... blue and orange... the hate is growing exponentially!!

-Semper Primus

Doubtful. Auburn has improved the last half of the season and it showed against Alabama. Their offense relies on deception through the running game and then while you are looking in the backfield they will hit you over the top with the pass. Their defense has improved from earlier in the season.

If VT has any chance to win and not merely keep it close the offense MUST show up for the entire game and consistently SCORE POINTS. None of this take a quarter or half off and then show up at the end.

I think there is a tiny chance that all of those teams are left out of a NY6 bowl with a UNC win, especially Clemson. I think it is pretty much a lock that we are a Tier 1 bowl game.

I have a simple wish...we go where we can play a beatable opponent. Please, Santa?

The older I get, the better I was...Go Hokies!!!
