Gary Pinkel is resigning from his post as Missouri Tigers football coach for health reasons.

Pinkel was diagnosed in May 2015 with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the school said on its website.

He will coach the rest of the season through Dec. 31 unless a new coach is found.

Difficult news to hear. Best wishes to Coach Pinkel and his family.

Best wishes as he battles this cancer

That sucks, I thought he was a pretty good guy. Best of luck to him. Mizzou athletics and administration has some serious rebuilding to do. Good thing we got Sandsman and Whit first.

This makes his stance even more impressive. He protected his team probably knowing that he was going to leave.

As for coaching vacancy, this position is one that I could see Bud salivating over.

Gotta wonder if the stress of that situation didn't affect his decision.

Winningest coach in Toledo history and Mizzou history. 5 top 20 seasons in his last 9 years. For a guy who was a college football head coach for 25 years, it never seemed like he got the credit he deserved...I wish him the best.

Sidenote: Mizzou's AD Mack Rhoades was the guy who hired Tom Herman to Houston. I'm sure Herman's gonna get a good look from Rhoades in this current head coaching search.

Good point on Herman. He's my top choice at the moment but with all these openings I'm not sure we'd get him even if we wanted to. Mizzou is in the much weaker SEC East division so that is an attractive place to be IMO. He could do pretty well in conference and get that inflated perception by virtue of being in the SEC. By cruising through the East division undefeated he still could have a shot at the playoffs even with a loss in the SEC Championship game. The SEC is the only league in the country that boasts that luxury.

I think you are going to see Mizz head towards the bottom of the East.

you could be right. If they get Herman, though, I would think they'd stay, at worst, in the middle of that division. I mean, the SEC East boasts the likes of Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and a Spurrier-less SCAR. Surely Herman could have Mizzu topping those 3 teams at least.

I can't see him settling for that job. Between current openings, soon to be openings and the 5-10 NFL head coaching jobs that will open that will draw in more current head coaches I see him getting a better job.

my original point, which I guess you're probably in agreement with (maybe?), is that Tom Herman is not likely to be in Blacksburg come January. And that makes me sad because he was comfortably at the top of my wishlist

I think it all depends on when the "big" jobs open. Whit could already be talking to his agent he has a jump on a lot of places,

Oh you're right on the money with that. We're not even sure how Herman ranks on Whit's list, though. He might not even be a serious contender. Just because he's the top choice for a lot of us message board fans doesn't mean he is for Whit. BUUUT, if Whit is pursuing him, I think VT is becoming a tougher sell with more jobs opening up.
