Battle of possible future Hokie coaches

Memphis (Fuente) and Houston (Herman) going at it. Memphis currently up 13-0. Thoughts?

The Cougs are going to have to fire up that offense pretty soon here if Herman wants to be in Blacksburg next year

Every second counts

Don't care how good the Memphis QB is, Fuente can coach and he could potentially be a monster hire.

Him turning Memphis around reminds me of McElwain at Colorado State.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Yeah and he'd have Lawson to work with

We'd do well to get either of these guys.

Every second counts

Fuente is looking like THE hire to make. Turning Memphis into a something is impressive but I wonder how he views VT. Is he looking to get somewhere else in a few more years? I think Morris would stay at VT for a long time. Not sure about Herman.

TBH, I don't think VT should be looking for another 29 year hire right now. I'm ok with us being a 5-year stop for a great coach IF he gets us back to 10+ win seasons and late-season Playoff conversations.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

totally agree with that. But if you had a choice between 2 coaches that are deemed same level would you choose the guy that you suspect is looking to jump in 5 or the guy that you think would be happy to make it a go permanently?

Silly me, I thought this thread was going to be about Chad Morris vs Ken Niumatalolo

Whit has an "Excite the fan base" problem. He knows offense is a big component of that. Even when the triple option is good, it's not going to excite the fan base. GT will tell you that.

Morris just ran a jet sweep, Hokie nation won't have that!!!

Fuente seems to me the best choice.....acc is a good place to be for a coach making the jump to a power 5.....less obstacles to overcome to make it to conference championship and maybe playoffs if lucky......to many big dogs in SEC...seems like a logical next step if i were fuente

Memphis' recruiting is really weak and he relies heavily on JUCOs. Would be interesting to see how Fuente would translate here. He's way down my list of choices, not that Whit is asking my advice...

Houston looks to me to have better athletes on both sides of the ball. Granted Memphis does have what appears to be a really good QB and big advantage in that department. However, Memphis really seems to be out scheming them and getting a lot out of their players on offense and defense. Will be fun to watch the second half. See if Herman can get his team turned around.

I like Fuente.

Good video.

Yes, he seems like a good choice.

It looks like Herman's Cougars have made some halftime adjustments, and now they're within six of Memphis

Houston 35 Memphis 34 with a 1:09 to go. Been a good final 5 mins.

Wasn't Major Applewhite at WVU?

Texas as a player then Texas, Rice, Bama and Cuse as a coach/GA.

You're thinking of Major Harris

Missed field goal! Houston wins!

That was a highly entertaining game. Both teams appeared to play tough, good football. I would be happy with either of these coaches.

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

People are down on the Buckeyes, but lots of teams scoring in the 20s this week.

I'll be happy with either, but damn if Herman isn't going to be the hottest hire in CFB.

USCw needs a celeb. Even though Herman is a Cali boy, I don't see them picking him.

USCe is a direct competitor with us, but it think we are a slightly better job. Little bit closer for Hermans Midwest connections as well.

Miami will hire a Miami guy.

Mizzou is a tainted job right now. That will be tough to fill. Look for a MAC coach there. Campbell? Fleck?

If UGA becomes open, they will go after bigger names (Patterson, Freeze, Swinney, Kelly) or Smart. And that would also open up Richt.

If Auburn or LSU open up, Herman may very well be a candidate and he should choose them over us. LSU, in particular, will pursue the bigger names that UGA will target. That would also open up Malzahn or Miles.

I would want to interview Herman, Fuente, Harsin, Morris, Smart and Foster. I think VT can get who they want.

For you and others who think I never agree with a coaching list, your wrong, I don't see a truly bad name on that list.

I still have concerns with Smart. I think he's Muschamp 2.0

Muschamp is a nutcase. Smart isn't.

Big difference.

There's a joke in there somewhere...

Would you be happier with Bryan Harsin than you would be with Larry Fedora?

Fedora isn't on my list.....yet..., but hes close. I'm impressed with what he has done at unc. I think of him as Morris with 8 years more experience (Morris is also last on my list).

I didn't list Richt for an interview because I would give him the job if he wants it. You probably disagree with that.

It depends, would this be Richt fired from UGA or leaving on his own? Would depend on how that played out. If he doesn't have some meltdown at the end then I'm ok with him.

Oh, presumably fired. He's not going to leave UVA for vt. If he did, I would question his judgment.

I don't think it will play out though. I expect him to be fired and for him to retire or take a few years off. He's got a lot more going on than coaching.

He's not going to leave UVA for vt

Strange Freudian slip?

If LSU is stupid enough to fire Les Miles, we should do whatever it takes to get him in Blacksburg. He would be far and away the best candidate out there and would turn us around almost immediately.

Why do you say? In my opinion he is a less good dabo swinney, meaning he only really brings passion to the sidelines and is mostly known for outrageous fake field goals and eating grass. He has been propped up for years by excellent DC john chavis, who left this year for A&M. He's in football recruiting hotbed, can pay his assistants astronomically (hi Jeff grimes), and has a rabid fan base and supporting facilities. He loses too many games despite having 5 stars all over the field, and justifies bowl losses by saying his guys did not have anything to play for or were looking ahead to the NFL. Honestly, I'm not all that impressed.

He is a great recruiter and his players play hard for him. He would take over Virginia again in terms of recruiting the second he was fired. We would have consistent top 10-15 classes under him right off the bat.

If Buzz was a home run hire, Miles would be a grand slam out of the park hire.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Auburn has had some serious struggles this year, but I don't see that position opening. This is not a repeat of 2012 where Chizik lost the team and had bad rumors flying everywhere. This is a talented QB coming in and absolutely sh*tting the bed in the worst possible way and Gus having to retool the offense to something more pocket-pass oriented with Sean White and having HIM get hurt and turning back to a timid Jeremy Johnson. That's all with an absolute dearth of talent at WR (and like two dozen WR drops the last 3-4 weeks). 90% of the Auburn fanbase is confident Malzahn will be able to turn it around. One could argue Gus should have a better WR core, being an offensive minded HC at a good SEC job, but the reality is he doesn't. He does have 4 viable running backs.

Anyway, LSU isn't coming open and Auburn isn't coming open. Not this year. Maybe next, but I doubt it.

Agreed, I would throw aTm and Texas in this category as well. Jobs that are better than VT but likely won't come open. And if they do, they add legitimate coaching choices to our pool.

1. Herman
2. Bud
3. Fuente
4. Morris

Don't want anyone else unless it's Chip Kelly or Jon Gruden

FWIW, Houston won the game with their BACK UP QB! Herman has quite a record with backups! Coincidence or good coaching?

Does pizza count as pie?!

I didn't realize that. That's a pretty good observation. I'm hoping it's good coaching...but..who knows. I think Herman is going to end up being a really good coach wherever he lands. I hope he takes the reins in BBurg but I'm not holding my breath. I'll be following his career either way because I think he's gonna be great.
