Word over on 247 is that we'll be wearing all black unis against Carolina. Wonder if they're bringing back the pro combats or if we'll be getting a whole new kit. Thoughts?

Heard we might be wearing those for the NC State game, but after the season not going as planned it was obviously scrapped. While I don't doubt that's what you saw, I can't see us going with new/black unis for Frank's last home game. I'd be more inclined to think it'll be maroon helmet, maroon shirt, and white pants with "Beamer" on the back of every jersey. Whenever we see those black jerseys, this Saturday or next year, I'm sure they'll look great.
These are the uniforms we decided not to wear for the NC State game; evidently Beamer is a little superstitious and decided to wear the Navy helmets for that game. The only time my "source" was wrong (down to the color of the socks) was the NC State game and they explained the situation the next time I saw them. But if Beamer has revealed the jerseys to the team, then I don't think there is any going back now.
I am not sure what the decals might be, my #sauces haven't seen the decals for the helmets as of this morning, but that is the last part of the process as players will wear the helmets this week for practice and then they will put the decals on. They have seen the unfinished helmets though, and they say there is some orange flake in the paint that really sets them off.
Everyone seems to be really excited for the new jerseys... in the locker room at least.
Edit: These were revealed yesterday at a team meeting. Evidently Beamer just shocked the entire team - pretty positive reaction from the team. Players say there is a # on one side and the VT decal on the other side - not sure if it will be individual numbers or all 25s.
There are numbers on one side, that can only mean one thing.
Well obviously my intuition was wrong... Good on Frank for surprising the players with it. Just goes to show that all the way to the end, players remained his first priority.
All black? I mean, I know this is Beamer's last in Lane, but is it really appropriate to treat this like a funeral?
Yeah, a funeral for the Tarheels
ZING
LOVE IT
Oh God, please let this be our new regular uni for the rebrand.
Why would we go to a default black uniform? And it's basically the exact same design with the shoulder stripes as what we have now, just black with orange stripes. I would think the rebrand would be something drastically different.
I realize the lighting is bad, but I'm pretty sure that's actually maroon. I wasn't sure at first, but looking at the definitely black cleats and how they're a different color than the socks and pants, it looks like a dark maroon. That could just be the orange and ?black? and lighting playing tricks on my eyes though.
Unless there's some sort of optical illusion with the orange trim, it looks like the stripe between the orange is maroon. Two shades of maroon would be strange. It is hard to tell from the photo, though. Guess we will find out soon enough.
It's black. The guy right next to the uniform is wearing maroon. There is a stark difference.
looks like the black socks on the mannequin don't match the uniform either.
I'm with you on this - it looks like a really really dark maroon uniform, probably to give the idea that it is black.
It's Black... but the stripe in between the orange ones is maroon.
Are we now having a TKP version of whether the dress (uniform) is blue (maroon) or black?
Lighting isn't great. What exactly is it?
They look like a really dark maroon to me. For my reference point, I used the black cleats.
Nah def black. You can see the maroon stripe between the orange stripes
I can't figure out what the helmet decal is.
Its a 25.
Which for everyone else was Beamer's Jersey number
Got it. Have a leg.
HATE HATE HATE.
Loved the pro-combats, not a fan of these at all. Doesn't look like Virginia Tech
That orange is not burnt
looks like ass, the maroon stripe is lost.
Kicks the old pro-combat black's ass.
I must be the only person that liked the pro-combat uniform.
Actually, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that didn't like them. To each their own, I guess. If we all liked the same things this would be a boring world.
I love it but...couldn't the number on the helmet be a bit confusing for refs? It is so clear and close to the numbers. I still think that Sam Rogers should be able to wear number 25 on Saturday too.
As if the refs weren't easily confused already...
truth.
Hell yeah! Great Monday morning news! I've been hoping for black unis for awhile. Also, nice touch with Frank's college number being on the helmet.
Riley! My avatar!
Is your phone in Comic Sans??
Looking like this actually has some legs.
Also, no numbers on jerseys.
Just different pictures of Frank.
No, only this picture. (cropped of course)
Kinda looks like Frank got arrested haha
Don't like camo unis, don't like black unis. This old Hokie would love to see us stick to our school colors. They look great and you know who's playing when you see them. I know, I know...kids today.....
It's Frank's last home game. If he likes what we wear could everyone please just shut up about what they don't like for just this ONE time.
*Gets off of lawn*
Well, excuuuuuuuuse me!
Not sure how I feel about the funeral vibes...if it's what Coach wants, though, I say go with it. Make the man happy.
Meh, I hate Oregon for the uniform wars they have started. Our colors are orange and maroon, that is what we should be wearing
I'm not a different color hater because I really liked the 2010 Pro Combat uniforms but this is a step down from them. Looks sloppy.
I have to agree, unfortunately. After looking at it last night and again this morning, I don't really care for it. The maroon stripes in the middle don't look good on black. And white stripes on the helmet don't fit with the rest of the uniform. Too many stripes, might as well just put a big stripe down the middle of the jersey.
Anyway, I'm not going to complain too much. This is going to be a very emotional game, and if the team and Frank approve, that works. But, I hope the rebrand for next year injects some life into our worn out striped uniform design.
Kind of in the same boat. The pro combat unis were so sweet... These, not so much.
Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more, the only thing I liked about the pro combat unis was the flat black helmet. Other than that, they had too much going on. The grey for the cadets, the numbers that went from orange to maroon (that went so dark that you couldn't read them against the black), the digital look, just all too much. All of that didn't translate and didn't look good on TV.
I also like how they did the colors on this uniform, too many times when a team does a "black out" they almost seem to forget to incorporate the school colors into the uniform. Either that or they make the helmet so bad that it is next to impossible to identify the team. Hopefully, they don't make the same mistake with our helmets (although no matter the logo, the o&m stripe should be a dead giveaway).
Here's some examples of bad blackout helmets.
I want whoever at Nike that designs Missouri's unis to do ours. They have some sweet stuff. Lots of subtle tiger stripes )p(could see in Hokies stone), with yellow color blocks (our orange)...but not old school. No idea how they would incorporate the oversized logos (maybe more VT than cartoon bird). Anyway...I can dream.
If only we had a high ranking official in the athletic department that had spent tie previously at Missouri that could make that connection...
I think this another good way for the guys to get riled up for the game.
Frank has 2/3 games left.. go all out and get the players to play as crazy as they can.
Oh dear goodness. I feel bad for UNC for what is about to go down on Saturday.... I mean, this has potential to be the loudest game ever if the crowd wants to give a memorable atmosphere to Frank
Not a fan. Think the maroon gets lost in the orange, but oh well. Hopefully the boys get hyped up and bring it against UNC for Frank. But whatever, this game isn't about the uniform it's about Frank. Hopefully they do all wear "Beamer" on the back of the jersey.
That would be cool.
Not sure how I feel about the unis as far as design is concerned, but if Frank likes them and the guys feel good suiting up in them, I'm on board. This game will have a huge emotional component to it, and if a custom uni is part of that, so be it.
All I know is that UNC is going to walk into a buzzsaw as far as the crowd is concerned. I'm fully expecting the best crowd I've ever been part of. Screw the fact that it's noon. I expect to walk away from the stadium, win or lose, without a voice and with my ears humming. We're going to give it our all. So are our boys on the field.
I don't like them. They look lazy to me. I would rather have had the unis that we wore against Boise St than these.
Really?
The maroon is too dark and blends with the black so that you can't really see the stripe on the helmet and made the numbers really hard to read on TV (I don't know how they looked at the game, wasn't there). So what you ended up with was a black uni with orange edging on the shoulders, orange sleeves and half an orange number. You also had an orange stripe down the pants. At least this uniform is basically sticking to our overall uniform design and incorporates more of our colors.
I did like the flat black helmets, but that's about it.
The best thing about those unis was the players wearing them T-Mobile and RMFW.
Maybe if we look like Oklahoma State we will play like Oklahoma State? I don't see the point in having a black uniform just for the sake of having one.
Except they don't wear black anymore...they were gray more often than not (which IMHO is badazz!).
Google search of Oklahoma State Football gives a plethora of pictures of black uniforms with one or two grey ones sprinkled in.
Be careful googling as your reference. When you google Virginia Tech uniforms you get our biggest mistakes near the top of the list (orange camo, foghorn leghorns, turkey tracks, etc.).
My point was OKSU isn't featuring black much any more (which is one of their official colors). In their last 5 games they have worn black once (all black against TCU). Other 4 were gray-white-orange, white-orange-white, white-white-white, gray-white-gray. They even wear gray stripes (rather than black) as accent on their white and orange jerseys.
The majority of those were away games so your point is weak. They have Baylor and Oklahoma at home left and I would bet that both involve a good deal of black.
I think his point regarding google is that it doesn't always give you a fair consensus on what uniforms a team utilizes.
Of the five home games they have played so far, the only time they wore all black was against TCU. The closest they came in the other 4 home games was KSU where they wore black jerseys, black pants, and white helmets. We will see what they where for Baylor and OU, but "a good deal of black" and all black are not the same thing. Besides, they don't have the shoulder stripes, either. Do they somehow own all black with orange accents because they have played one game in that combo?
Exit light. Enter night.
That being said, Nike needs to come up with something for the future that gives us an identity. The first thing that came to mind when I saw this was Oregon State.
We do have an identity. Its maroon.
We look like everyone else with the stripes. Except ours are shorter.
When you complain about not having a unique enough look you get the Louisville or the Miami treatment and end up with uniforms that look like garbage.
I think that, at this point, Frank has a lot of say on the uniform choices and if Frank didn't want these for his last home game then they wouldn't be wearing them. I feel like CFB likes the uniform changes more then we do as fans. Plus why not add a little wrinkle to probably the wildest environment a 12pm kickoff has ever seen on ESPN.
It's worth mentioning that Nike has been planning on doing blackout uniforms for what they consider their top programs this year. Among the schools who took them up on it is Ohio State and Boise. Looks like you can now add us to the list.
is it just me or does the Helmet number not match the jersey number?
Guessing all the helmets will say "25" to honor Frank.
So I guess I'm one of the only people that likes these
Fellow uniform liker checking in. There are dozens of us.
Just like Windows Phone users?
No, I'm on your side. Been wanting black unis for awhile now. The tribute to Frank on the lids is another nice touch.
OT: didn't want to start a whole new thread for this but tickets prices for the UNC game have fallen a lot, so if you are still looking for tickets this would be a good time.
I'll just leave this here:
Friendly reminder that uniforms don't win/lose games. Would have been nice to see us wear maroon, but oh well.
Only oddity is that I presume there is no away version of this uni? So no black lids at UVa.
I think the uniforms are for the players. On a day that is supposed to be all about Beamer, Beamer does Beamer things and provides something cool for the players to show its not all about him. Typical Beamer, always doing things for others.
Not a fan of black unis in general (they're so 2010), but these are about the worst I've seen.
That uni looks like ass. Sorry, but there's nothing wrong with Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange. I wish we would stop with the uniform musical chairs. All we need are two uniforms and that's it.
If we were to do anything for Frank's last day it should be a throwback uni similar to the style that Beamer wore.
FTFY
I'm willing to bet that this uniform wouldn't be rolled out without Frank's blessing. If he's okay with it then I'm okay with it. Stop complaining about the damn uniforms and just enjoy watching Franks last couple of games.
That's pretty much been our standard uniform for the last five years.
From the original press release when the white out uniforms were first introduced:
And that was the era that Frank played in. Since the university retired the T over V logo, that uniform design is the closest we can get to a throwback.
Official: black unis for Saturday, retro road look for season finale against UVA.
http://www.hokiesports.com/football/recaps/20151116aaa.html
Gonna miss that man.
Excited about the throwback helmet for the UVA game.
Retro road look against UVA?!
Ah, shucks. Not that one. So from 1987. Can't find a picture from that exact year, but I'm guessing it will look something like this:
It's probably going to be this:
They're OK.
I really really liked Syracuse's unis against Clemson this past weekend. Very classic. I want something like that, all maroon/white with orange accents.
at first i was all like, meh, not a fan of black if you're not Ok St or Oregon St, etc...then i saw all the hate for the unis in this thread and was all like, i need to defend this poor uniform! this uniform looks great for a black uniform. Frank wants the kids to wear it. that's all i need. i'm good.
This confirms Metallica will be at the game for Enter Sandman. you know...cause Sandman is from the BLACK album. Plus I saw their tour bus in downtown DC this morning...which is why traffic was so bad.
A "W" looks good with anything we wear.
I like.
Exit light, enter night... Enter the Hokies!

NightNoonI don't like them, nor do I get why we'd use these uniforms for a noon game that also just so happens to be Frank's last game.
But it doesn't matter. Just win.
Read here - Frank did it for the team.
Information about the Uniform Choices.
That's fine.
I still think they look like shit.
what ever happened to that whole "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" thing?
seriously. this adds nothing to the conversation.
Its a message board thread about the uniforms for Saturday.
Last I checked, we're not required to agree with or like all decisions made by the athletic department.
sure, I agree with that. But instead of posting a brain numbing comment like "I still think they look like shit." you could try to add some substance to your opinion by giving reasons why you don't like them. Simply saying you like or dislike something adds nothing to the conversation. Saying it in such an aggressive and nasty way using profanity just makes you look like a tool. I don't have an issue with you disliking the uniforms but at least put a little more thought and effort into posting that opinion instead of spouting senseless profanity.
Don't forget that college football isn't about uniforms. It's not about money or winning football games. It's about helping young men grow and mature and setting them up for success both on and off the field. Beamer is one of the only coaches left who really seems to get that. We shouldn't be discussing uniform combinations. We should be celebrating the end of an era. An era led by a man whose understanding of what is important to college athletics transcends modern college football. We should be thankful for the man and we should be celebrating his exit triumphantly. Cursing the uniforms detracts from that.
Man, if you really have that big of an issue with someone saying 'shit' I don't really know what to tell you. I do find it interesting that you seem worked up enough to write that post because I used a curse word but have no problem calling me a tool.
I don't really care enough to fully respond to your post because, again, its a thread about uniforms but I have no idea how/why you spun this into some kind of disrespect to Frank Beamer.
Frank did it for the players, which is awesome. That doesn't mean that I have to like what the uniforms look like.I just don't think Virginia Tech should do black uniforms. Or whiteouts for that matter. Our colors are maroon and orange and we've done way too many stupid things with our uniforms (foghorn leghorn, getting rid of the retro T over V etc.). Plus, I think the the black and maroon look weird together.
you could have stopped with this before editing your comment. That would have been fine.
It's not the word 'shit' I have an issue with. It's the way you said the uniforms look like shit. Last time I checked, some players and recruits (or player's parents) frequent this site. If the kids are psyched about the uniforms it looks bad when you say that what they think looks cool looks like shit.
I also didn't call you a tool. I said that commenting in the fashion you did makes you look like one. Different.
again, you could have just stopped with
See, that wasn't so hard. That's all you had to do from the get-go. That's not so bad. I happen to agree with you on this point. I think we should stick to our current official colors. But I'm neither hip nor remotely influential on our uniform designs. If the kids like them who am I to protest?
stop, hammertime
Because it's the last chance to use those uniforms. We're kind of out of games already.
Okay, those newer pictures are looking better.
At first, I wasn't liking the orange numbers directly on the black, as it was looking too much like the Chicago Bears throwbacks that just make my eyes hurt.
But the clearer pictures make the orange pop. Still not sold on the stripes, though.
Agreed. They definitely look better in the higher resolution images. But I just don't understand the shoulder and pants stripes. The maroon on black is really strange, and it doesn't match the white/orange triple stripe on the helmet. If you're going to use stripes, at least make them consistent all over the uniform. Maybe some white outlines of the numbers would help the look pop a bit more too. Not my favorite, but looking better in these new pictures today.
I think I'm in the majority when I say I don't like these black uniforms. I think they could have done a better job. I did like the black ones against Boise State and still keep searching for a replica online. However, this is for the guys and if they like it and get pumped up to hit UNC and send Beamer out the right way, then I'm all for it.
Now I have a dilemma. Since Coach Beamer announced his retirement I've been planning on wearing my Beamerball shirt to the game. Now I find out it's a blackout game. My Beamerball shirt is white. Do I support the team/players and join the blackout, or support Frank and be "that guy that didn't get the memo" and wear white to a blackout game? Decisions, decisions...
You could save the Beamerball shirt for the UVA game. Cuz I know you're going to that one. Everybody else is!!
