So, I have to ask a favor of all Hokie fans within driving distance of Blacksburg. On Sunday at 1 PM, VT takes on #1 PSU in Cassell. This is a huge huge match, with probably 10+ future all americans and likely 2-3 future National Champions Wrestling.
Admission is FREE!!!
Thats right. Free. In other parts of the country, people would happily pay $20 or $30 to see this dual. We get it for free. After watching our first weekend, we have a real shot to win it. It will be action packed exciting wrestling.
Even if you've never watched wrestling, even if you are intimidated by the sport/the rules, just go. Our fans are great, welcoming and inclusive, and they just want you there to cheer with them. Its a lot of fun to cheer for that pin, and there will be fireworks at this match. It really helps validate the amazing progress Dresser has made and gives whit more support to properly fund one of our best National Championship caliber teams.
Thanks and Go Hokies!

Twitter from the wrestling team:
Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't do this at Moss just to charge admission. My only guess is that they wanted a larger crowd than Moss can hold. This is a huge match and I can't wait.
Yeah, there will hopefully be way more than the 1300 or so moss holds. Plus i dont know if their performances are booked this weekend
I'll be in there
Awesome, Thanks for coming out!
After Tech's steamrolling of a solid Iowa State team on Sunday, this is gonna be one heck of a match. I really can't wait.
Streamroll is right, what a start to the season!
PSU has wrestlers ranked in the top 5 in almost every weight class. We smoked ISU, with some strong Freshman. This should be a great match.
Feature on our new coach Mike Zadick!
I went to the Iowa State match for a bit and it was awesome! I should be there!
Awesome, Thanks for coming out!
I've been looking forward to this match since it was announced. I missed the Ohio State dual against us last year and was really disappointed, but man oh man this match is going to be awesome!!
So reports are coming in PSU is estimating a travelling crowd of 3000. Need all the bodies we can muster to preserve home mat advantage!
good lord. That's a third of the seating capacity.
We should charge them admission lol
3000 fans traveling? I'll believe it when I see it
I remember watching a PSU match on BTN last season and it was a pretty awesome show. They have the lights real dim and had player entrances and such. Definitely gave off a bit of that WWE vibe which always makes for some solid entertainment.
Let's go Boys, we got a solid squad this season, hoping we get an NCAA champion or two.
I hope to be there, we'll see what happens with my schedule but I don't see why not!! GO HOKIES!!!
I actually know one of the assistant coaches pretty well, and I also want to go to support him. He also said he thought I'd love it even though I don't know squat about wrestling haha, should be a heckuva match!
They're pretty intense.
Glad youre coming out!
This should be a really great match. I briefly considered going but 6 hours of driving from Richmond for a 90 minute match is a bit much.
I am glad it has been picked up by ESPN3 though as I will certainly be watching. Go Hokies!
Ah cmon. You know you want some Carol Lee Donuts
I mean you could always stay for the basketball game at 5. The girls could definitely use some more fans.
I live in Richmond. If I didn't have to work on Sunday, I'd be thinking about coming down. And I'm not a wrestling fan. But i'd come to support this awesome team!
Go Hokies!
For those intimidated by being unfamiliar with wrestling rules, Penn state folks just put out their orientation post. Very funny, but with a PSU tint:

Wrestling commercial for sunday!
Bumping so people don't forget. If you are going, show up early as Penn St is rumored to have a crowd of 2500 to 3000 coming, so make sure you get there early to get a good seat. Lots a great matches as Tech has 6 ranked wrestlers (7 if Haught wrestles) and Penn St has wrestlers ranked at every spot but heavyweight and even that kid was a 2 time state champ in Pennsylvania.
For those who cant make it, ESPN3 has it live. Go Hokies!
Coming here to ask that.
So watched about 30 mins: one I don't get the rules at all, two PSU has a crap load of people there.
Really fun match full of some awesome match ups. Didn't win but I think everyone had a great time.
I was there and it was an impressive crowd. Announced attendance was over 5k...5209 IIRC. Maybe 1/3 of the crowd appeared to be PSU supporters to me. Not quite the 2500-3000 that had been rumored, but far more visiting fans than I'd expect for a wrestling meet, to be sure.
Iowa this week set a record attendance for wrestling over 42,000 people saw them wrestle OKST outdoors in the Iowa football stadium. That's more fans than at a LOLUVA game.
There were some really intense matches today. Tech got a couple upsets. Dance and Chisko both defeated the #2 wrestlers in the country in their weight classes. Tech also got upset in a couple matches. I think they said the crowd was 5,097. I would guess 1200 PSU fans.
I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure when they announced the attendance, the first digit was 5 and the last digit was 9, so probably 5079. Either way, a pretty impressive turnout for wrestling.
Is there anyway someone who watched the match and knows about wrestling can do a write up? This team seems like a true contender from everything else that I've seen written about them and it would be awesome to get some more in depth analysis.
Black Shoe Diaries (Penn State blog at SB Nation) has a pretty decent write-up here, albeit from a Penn State perspective. I haven't seen anything from a Tech perspective yet, though.

Instead of doing a write up myself and to keep as little bias as possible flowrestling did live updates of the match. But to be blunt outside of Dance at 125, Chishko at 141, and somewhat McFadden at 165 the guys wrestled very hesitantly and were incredibly lackadaisical on bottom.
Post deleted...meant to reply to Smitty.
And Tidewater peeps going to see the squad try and make it three in a row at the VA duals tomorrow?
Bumping this thread in case someone wants to watch the dual with #15 UNC going on right now. Still a few weight classes left to go. We are up 17-6. I'll post the streaming link below.

Thanks for posting this!
Looking much better tonight with all of the big guys going. Hoping the health holds up and they can make a run for a top 5 finish during the NCAAs.
Speaking of Health, where is Epperly? We miss him a lot in close duals.
Out for "family matters"
I don't know for sure, but I think him and Haught are just banged up. Brascetta is the same way, hence why he didn't go last night. I haven't heard of any major injuries though, so they just kind of let them heal since nothing really matters until the ACC tourney anyway and then the NCAAs of course.
Edit. didn't see the previous post, hope everything turns out okay for him and his family.
Not "banged up"...plumped up. Coach blames his Grand Ma's
That's kind of crazy at this level of competition. I know my high school coach who wrestled at Appy State back in the day used to say weight wasn't really that hard to make in college because you would normally lose 5 to 10 lbs per practice due to how rigorous they were, similar to Iowa's classics from the Gable era.
That's the match. HOKIES WIN 27-13.
Is Jared Haught injured also?
Can't always make it to campus (& Moss) but HokiesXtra has been streaming the Women's bball and they did the Friday/Sat wrestling. I go when I can but its nice to have a streaming source. The one wrestling rule that is hard to understand for me is at times when one has a grip on the other and then the ref seems to say, ok break it up and then gives the guy being held a point for the escape. Somebody?
didn't see it, but sounds like a stalling penalty. if one wrestler is gassed and is stopping action by grabbing the wrist/arms of the other wrestler and preventing them from doing anything.
Sounds like you could be talking about a stalemate, but during a stalemate no one is awarded a point. Another senerio you could be talking about is when the wrestler on top does an illegal hold, such as locking his hands. In that case the ref stops the match and awarded the bottom wrestler a point.
No, I looked it up. Escape: A move you use from the bottom of the referee's position to escape, or get away from your opponent
If it's an escape you were asking about the situation probably started in the top and bottom positions in which the bottom wrestler got an "escape" but the top wrestler never fully lost control, hence the clinched position. The refs will usually swallow their whistles until the action is over, which was probably a stalemate in this situation, to award the 1 point in case of the bottom wrestler getting a reversal. Another situation that could've occurred is a stalling point which comes when one wrestler is initiating the action while the other essentially does nothing to score. Now with the new college out of bounds rules stalling is becoming more common of a call no matter how controversial see the Joey Dance/Nathan Tomasello finals match in Vegas where Joey loses on a bullshit stalling call due to the new rules.
Have to admit, one of the best times I have had at a Virginia Tech sports event, was when the Hokies upset Ohio State last year in the Cassel. Free event and lots of emotion and excitement in the air.
VT wrestles WVU at 7 tonight on ESPN3. Everyone tune in! Key matchups will be at 125 and 197.
You should just make a new thread instead of using one that has the wrong date in the title.
True. I would've liked to, but it's a lose-lose situation. Then there would've been others who thought it didn't deserve its own thread
Edit: it was also bumped a couple weeks ago to notify people of a match so I figured I'd go along with it
People are always welcome to bring attention to current Hokie sporting events, especially if there are interesting match-ups or other significance. Our wrestling program is on the rise and is nationally relevant, so please, if you have something to contribute, do! Start a discussion. Tell those of us who know little about the sport what we're missing. Even a short preview or commentary would be excellent.
And if anyone gives you grief, they'll have words with me.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I just didn't have time to write much.
Update: the Hokies are rolling so far
125 #3 Joey Dance took care of business vs #13 Zeke Moisey 9-5. Moisey was NCAA runner up last year
133 Gustafson scores a major decision 9-1.
141 Redshirt freshman #10 Chisko puts on a takedown clinic and wins big 20-6
149 Sal Mastriani has had a disappointing season thus far, but he absolutely dominated winning by tech fall 17-1
157 #4 Nick Brascetta won by major decision over #16. 19-6. I was worried about this one because of how long Brascetta has been out due to injury.
165 True freshman #11 Dave McFadden wins 9-2.
174 #3 Zach Epperly won 9-3. It was good to see him back.
184 Austin Gabel wins 3-1 with a last second takedown. This was the first match tech trailed in. He was down 1-0 in the first period.
197 Jared Haught is not wrestling tonight so Tech sent out freshman Dylan Cook to face off against the #7 ranked wrestler. Cook lost 8-2. This gave WVU their first win of the night.
285 On senior night with the match wrapped up Dresser sent out senior Dan Garwood, rather than the stud #2 Ty Walz. Garwood wins 7-5. Nice to see the senior go out with a win.
Hokies win 32-3
It 100% deserves its own thread with the hot takes you are providing!
