Take it for what you will, I heard it on Huddle Pass this morning, they reported a reputable inside #sauce listed the top 3 on the current short list for the Virginia Tech job:
Also listed Tom Herman is heavily rumored to be named the next USC-e Head Coach.
#Sauce reiterated to Huddle Pass that, its the current short list, and lists could adapt to the ever changing carousel landscape.
Take it for what you will but, Sean Glennon and Cory Holt on Huddle Pass do have connections with the program that I do not.

It's looking more and more like we're getting Herman, and that makes me happy
You mean Fuente? All the reports point to him not Herman.
"Don't believe anything you read" ~ Whit Babcock
Two days ago RichRod is "out of the running" and Fedora is a "strong candidate" from some #sauces and now we have additional #marinades with their own information, with RichRod at #2 and Fedora nowhere to be found. I get that stuff moves quickly and the list will be fluid, but jeez.
Just proves that no one knows anything of value at this point. Wake me up when there's a press conference.
True, we're new to this, we don't know how to act.
Who knows how much this list changes come December when Hot Seats become Confirmed Openings.
Since we are still in the middle of the season, and all the #marinades are coming from people that aren't the coach(es) in question or Whit, I'd say any list will have any number or names/candidates on it at any point in time. Many of which will be just flat out "want" of the originator of the rumor/list.
The "leaks" could also be coming from some agent of the coach in question to try to get the current university to increase overall pay or to give a post season bonus.
That's how I feel about recruiting - excitement about a commitment!... that ends in decommitment, transfer, dismissal, or underwhelming on-field performance. I'll get excited when I see an actual accomplishment.
I am ok with #1 and #3, #2 is a number 2 from everything I have seen and heard about him and I don't think he would be a good Hokie.
If the Texas job opens up, Herman will bolt for Austin in a second if they offer him the job.
Most coaches we hire would
"Most coaches
we hirewould"FTFY
Why does everyone say this? He is a cali guy. Wouldn't he be more likely to just take the USC job (if offered) this year since it is open?
That whole "if offered" part is the hang up. Southern Cal thinks too highly of themselves to hire a guy with one year of HC experience, regardless of his other qualifications.
He already coaches at Houston and has Texas recruiting ties now so the Texas job makes a lot of sense
I would say Chad Morris would more than Herman, but I could definitely see that.
Hmm- Rich Rod i thought was out of the running completely?
All in favor of an anti-RichRod hashtag:

I think you are 1 letter off there
I want Herman or Fuente if we won't give Bud a shot at HC. I really hope he stays if we get one of those young guys.
It would be nice to see Foster coaching the D next year if we get a new HC. I just don't see it happening, though. I think the days of Foster roaming the sidelines in Blacksburg are coming to an end :(
Yeah, we have no idea what will happen unfortunately. However, I agree with you that I doubt it's likely he stays on as DC for a younger new guy.
shocking how many people have inside sources right now that have conflicting information
I mean, if you want any sort of #sauces, the closest I've gotten is a like on Twitter from Whit's wife regarding a tweet someone sent me saying that they doubt Whit is hiring RichRod. That's the best I've got.EDIT: Ignore every bit of that. I'm an idiot and it's just someone else with the last name Babcock who lives in the Roanoke area, not Whit's wife. Though she might be family of his based upon content of her tweets.
Ill take it. Anything to throw Rich Rod hiring into the nearest pool of toxic waste the better.
Whit's wife, for reference: https://twitter.com/kwbab3_kelly
Yup, I realized that. It's actually Whit's sister who liked the tweet. So it probably means nothing at all.
Whit was at her house babysitting. Lacking something to do after putting the kids to bed, he started playing with the sister's phone... saw the message, liked it. So it seems this may be a big clue in our hunt for the new coach.
How many times is a new coach announced -- pro or college -- and it's somebody that really wasn't on anybody's radar? Perhaps more often than not.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next VT coach is somebody that hasn't been properly vetted by columnists and the peanut gallery on message boards.
The issue with that is there are not that many FBS level HC candidates out there. Someone will have listed the future HC at some point.
Disagree. The problem with that thinking is that you're assuming that bloggers and message board "experts" with "sources" have properly identified all of the viable candidates -- without any real expertise, inside knowledge, interviews, etc.
This offseason is no different than any other -- except there are going to be more open jobs and more available coaches than ever (many of whom we don't even know about yet). And as always, choices will come out of left field. There is no reason to think VT couldn't be one of them.
How many bloggers/message board experts with sources had Buzz Williams on their VT short list before it was announced? Or Tommy Tuberville at Cincy? Very few.
Here you go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NCAA_Division_I_FBS_footba...
Consider this list, plus Bud, to all be possibilities (with varying degrees of viability). Now that they have been mentioned, they can be said to be "on the radar," and no one can act surprised if we hire any of them.
You forgot the NFL coaches!
And you never know...Butch Davis is on the market...
At this point I trust insider information as far as I can throw it, and information is abstract so it's impossible to throw.
#deep
well with your bad knee you shouldn't be throwing anything.
I get the logic; former Virginia Tech players must know what's going on. However, I'm inclined to believe what they are saying isn't anything more than regurgitating other reports. They are not part of Whit's inner circle, few are. Most, if not all, of the prominent staff in the athletic department from when they played has either retired or moved on. Finally, at this point, I doubt Frank Beamer or his staff have been clued in.
This is my thoughts, I entertained the thought that these were "sources" until I saw that it was Glennon and Holt. I imagine they have some phone numbers to people in the Ath Dept, but seeing how much has changed in terms of personnel since their playing days, I can't imagine they know much more than any reporter with press credentials.
I don't think it is implausible one bit that they actually do have a source or two. Having worked in the athletic dept myself, during the time these two played for us, I would say that their source is someone still on the football staff, whether it be a coach, GA, strength coach, trainer, team doctors, team nutritionists, tutors, Video coordinators... while you're right about the turnover, it has been largely at the top of the VT Athletic Dept, the Football team has a ton of people still working for the program that these two would know and/or have a relationship with. Let's also not forget, there has been a lot of speculation around Bud and other coaches remaining on board or not remaining a part of the program, these types of decisions specifically will decide the fate of a large amount of employees who are tied specifically to Coach Beamer's regime. Anyone of these support staff people would be wondering what is coming next for their own careers, in fact I personally know some of them are. If you think for one second they are not clamoring for information about who the next coach will be even more so than us, you couldn't be more wrong. In my mind, Coach Foster is the lynchpin, I am positive Whit has spoken with him about the future and while he might be playing it close to the vest because it is in his best interest, many others inside that building other than Whit have an idea of where this is heading and who is on his list, probably more than media members. IMO.
Very possible, and I don't disagree, but again, how in the know are these folks? I would say they are in the dark just like everyone else.
My hunch is by the time legit information trickles down to lower level athletic department employees, a decision has already been made.
We heard mention of a search committee that featured Shane and Bud, right? If that's the case, names could be leaked out of there. But it might be "names the committee is considering" and not names that Whit has already decided on.
I agree. But what's to say that a decision hasn't already been made?
FWIW, I believe that very very few people outside of Whit Babcock and the next coach know much of anything, or will know much of anything, until after our season is over.
I get the sense that Whit is playing this one as close to the vest as he can. There are going to be leaks. That's expected. But I'm sure Whit has expressed to his new coach the utmost importance in keeping things quiet out of respect for Beamer. I'm sure both parties will try to keep things as quiet as possible for as long as possible. It's still only November. There is a good chance a hire hasn't been made yet. There's also an outside chance that a deal is all but done. Only time will tell.
I can tell you from experience, some of the "lower level athletic department employees" can be major gate keepers of information. Take a guy like Bruce Garnes for example, no one I know in that building is more connected and he is essentially an EA. I think you would be shocked at how much of a small intimate office setting the VT athletic department is. It is a major business office in which you literally see the CEO (Whit Babcock) on a daily basis, he isn't tucked away in some super exclusive executive wing of some campus sized corporation building. Word travels very fast and loose among the employees in Jamerson and Merryman.
To me the real question is how current the information is that these sources have, it might not be accurate now, ya know what I mean?
If I remember right, Sean Glennon was never really that accurate anyway!!
oof
Someone get Glennon to a burn center.
My eyes are raining...too funny!
But isn't Cory Holt listed as the 4th string backup on this year's roster?? He's like a 10th year redshirt senior I thought...
WTF........

by the time we actually hear something creditable I will be found rolling back and forth on my kitchen floor...

#nosauces Chip Kelly
Attraction to the Shiny New Toy Syndrome is alive and well in Hokie Nation right now.
It will not be Rich Rod. Whit knows that choice would incense the alumni and cost him money.
Did someone say incense

That movie was pure gold for dialogue and acting.
What movie is that?
In Bruges. Currently on Netflix!
sure...likely story /s
I agree, I really dont see it either, plus Im team #antiRichRod so I dont want to believe it, but Whit worked with him for five+ years so I understand how his name keeps coming up.
I was worried about the Rich Rod rumors early on. The more I've thought about it, the less I've worried. Whit hiring Rich Rod because they worked together several years ago would be the kind of lazy Gary Darnell hire that we are (deservedly) skittish about, but shouldn't be any more. That just doesn't seem like Whit's style to me.
nothing has ever made me want Christmas to get here faster more than constant #sauces threads on TKP
Clark, that's the gift that keeps on giving the whole year.
I just pre-ordered the blu-ray 25th Anniversary edition from Amazon.
Best Christmas movie of all time!
Christmas day at my house. Wife upstairs watching Christmas Story while I'm downstairs putting all the kids toys together watching Christmas Vacation on loop.

You'll get a leg from me every time you reference this. My all-time favorite Christmas movie, and one of my all-time favorites ever. I watch every Christmas Eve at a minimum.
"Halleluiah, holy shit! Where's the Tylenol honey?"
But hokie football may be done by Christmas this year and that just makes me sad
Been that way for a while which makes us all sad... at least we have buzzketball to fall back on for entertainment uhh well kind of
Man I used to think that Whit was masterminding all of the rumors to gauge the responses of the fanbase and potential coaches but honestly he really doesn't have to. Us crazy fans just do it for him.
Its going to be a tough couple of weeks for Whit, even after naming the head coach. Weve gone through some strange phases:
18. Profit?
I thought #18 was hating RichRod
^^^ skips turn heads to #11
Was told yesterday by a CONCRETE #source inside the athletic dept that Chad Morris has the job. Bud will stay on as D Coordinator.
Sorry, the Hokie stone is dolemite limestone, not concrete. I think you might have just tripped on the sidewalk outside Merryman.
Always give an upvote to Dolemite references
Huh, I wonder when Sam Rogers shaved off his mustache.
he has to do it three times a day. This picture caught him after breakfast
don't do this. Either you're right and then I have to wait for confirmation or you're wrong and you're setting me up to have my hopes dashed.
Should this be true, though:

Why were you talking to the wall?
He only thought it was the wall.
It was the sidewalk. Somebody tilted the earth while he was at TOTS.
I hate it when they do that.
Well I was told from a STEEL #source that Bill Belichick has the job.
Well I was told from a STEEL #source that
Bill BelichickMike Tomlin has the job.this was the much more clever response. Leg
Adamantium #marinades have informed me that Bear Bryant has been raised from the dead, exchanged his houndstooth hat for Beamer's sombrero and will be announced after we wallop UVA.
My sources are actually telling me that zombie Bear is no longer in the running. Whit seems to be really high on zombie Vince Lombardi though.
What about ManBearPig?
Listen, this coaching search is super cereal.
Adamantium #marinades --> Wolverine --> Michigan --> RichRod.
Well shit! We're through the looking glass here people.
Like my wife, this would not suck
there's a joke to be made here, but I'm not sure it's worth the downvotes...
I'd love it, but it looks like the hiring school will be on the hook for $6 mil.
http://www.todaysu.com/aac-today/smu-mustangs/chad-morris-isnt-leaving-s...
That buyout number is not right, whoever wrote that article just took his contracted salary and assumed that a buyout is equal to future pay in contract. This of course is very rarely (if not ever) the case.
From the article:
Umm, I'm not doubting the author (looks to be a student) knows how to do math. I am doubting the author knows how contracts work. Because, that's not how a buy-out clause works.
I would certainly hope 3 x 2 = 6 is some quick math, at least for the author's sake.
How come Herman is being linked to the USC-e job more than the VT job. Is it because Herman is seen as someone who wants to go off to a higher profile job and USCe is seen as a stepping stone for that?
Because nobody actually knows what they're talking about and #SEC
As of now, I think I have Herman and Fuente as my 1a and 1b. Herman just looks like a guy who has the potential to be outstanding. Ohio State's offense has not really looked the same since he left, and he is recruiting some big time players to Houston. Limited head coaching experience, but he's undefeated in that regard so far. I think he would be an excellent hire.
If we can't get Herman, Fuente is my next choice. More head coaching experience, and what he has done at Memphis is nothing short of miraculous. Seems like a high-character guy. Knows how to build a team and get the most out of his players, and he is also a great offensive mind having groomed Dalton at TCU and now turning Lynch into a 1st round draft prospect. My ONLY concern with Fuente is recruiting. He hasn't really been seen a proven top-notch recruiter, as Memphis has relied mostly on 2-3 star guys and JUCOs. But, he has supremely overachieved with the talent at Memphis, so maybe he could really bring in the top recruits at a place like VT. A concern, but I think the net positive makes him a top candidate.
I would get behind Morris, but I put him behind the first two guys. He's definitely a great offensive mind and can recruit with the best of them, but Clemson looks like they are doing just fine without him. As I mentioned, compare that with OSU after Herman left - looks like he took their offense with him. I also would worry he would bolt back to Texas if given the opportunity for a bigger job. I wouldn't be upset with this hire, but it would tell me we struck out on Herman and Fuente.
And just no to RichRod. I think we can do way better.
As for Fedora, I think it's most likely a ploy to get an extension/raise from UNC by his agent. If he is genuinely interested, my reaction is kind of "meh." Has underachieved at UNC until this year, now that he has a ton of upperclassman talent and a SR QB (who I'm still not really sold on). Took him this long to realize you need to play defense and actually hired someone. He may be looking to jump ship if the NCAA is coming down on UNC. Would definitely be a power play to poach him from an intra-division rival. However, I would politely pass.
I do not get the whole "Clemson is doing fine without him" argument. Does that mean he is not a good coach? Teams can have success after a coordinator leaves.
No, I definitely think he's a great coach. I'm just saying their offense wasn't impacted in nearly the same way as OSU's this year with Herman leaving. OSU has basically out-talented the competition most of this year. They have looked pretty inept on offense at times, especially with Jones at QB. Herman brought that offense to another level and made Jones look a lot better than I think he is.
I still think Morris would be a very good hire. The one thing I would really like about Morris is the potential for him to poach away Jeff Scott from Clemson. Talk about an all-star offensive/recruiting cast.
Their offense wasn't impacted because they are still running his offense, albeit without him to make calls. Their offense is full of talent, like Deshaun Watson, that were recruited by Morris. Clemson's offense is 100% the result of Chad Morris and the appeal of his offense to recruits.
Oregon went to on to win the PAC-12 and play in the National Championship two years after Chip Kelly left. So, by that reasoning, I guess Chip Kelly isn't a very good NCAA coach.
Yea with Chip Kelly's recruits. Now look at them.... kinda fallen off a bit one might say
Yes! Yes! I want Chip Kelly at VT! Pant, pant, pant...
the lack of logic in this thread makes me think its all clowning
for chrissake... guys like Kelly get a ton of reps to their backups... OHST had three QBs in one season play at high levels
if the program falls down after one guy leaves it... pretty much everyone else was dependent on that one guy?
seriously?
we need a guy who if he leaves, we get to watch the whole thing crumble? is this really the criteria?
just means you got clowned into reading what seemed to be a thoughtful and insightful post
like getting done with a negotiation... then your opponent gives you a big prize
Michigan ran RichRod's offense the year after he left with Hoke at the helm too. That clearly wasn't because Michigan was going to be fine without RichRod.
i'm fine with either Fuente or Morris if they keep Foster; i couldn't care less about RichRod. as for Fedora, still trying to figure him out...
Yeah...I'll just leave this here for everyone to choose their favorite flavor.
Anyone think Chizik is going to be a head coach again next year?
Could very well happen. He might even be head coach at UNC. If we don't snag Fedora, I could see USCe or USCw potentially taking a gamble on him. They don't play defense in the Pac12 anyway.
Agree. If we hire Fedora, I doubt Chizik is coming with.
I'm gonna go ahead and say it...and damn me all you want for it but didn't Herman's offense kind of struggle until they really hit stride in the playoffs? I mean couldn't Ohio state theoretically pull the same card this year? I seem to remember a pretty bad Penn state team giving them a lot of trouble. Same with navy and well....us haha
I remember Herman catching a lot of flak on 11W and even some mocking here when we beat them last year - "Genius Mensa member can't figure out that he should run some short passes into the middle of the field!"
I wouldn't say they struggled all year, J.T. Barrett was shattering Ohio State and B1G records. Every good offense has bad games sometimes, like that Penn State game or when we outschemed and outplayed them last year. Even the great Oregon offenses had tough games.
You are all wrong, except the guys that say it's never whom it seems it will be.
Last Monday, Babcock inked the HC of the Ottawa RedBlacks of the Canadian Football League to a 5 year.
