Not that I thought Whit would put us in that equation, but would have been interesting if USCw took Sumlin or someone at a school who then had the power to try to take some of our top targets.

Is there any benefit in announcing this before the UVA game though? Depending on when they announce it that could also eliminate some coaches that would have games on championship weekend.
Coaches have left before bowl games (like Chip Kelly) others have announced but coached through the bowl game(like Urban Meyer)
I believe Brian Kelly left Cinci (without talking to his team) for ND prior to their bowl game.

You could just use Mack Brown before UNC curb stomped the hell out of us in the 1998 Gator Bowl under Carl Torbush. That ended up working out well, though, because it got Carl promoted, which sent them into a tailspin that got them Bunting and Butch.

Don't think it will be any of those...but one name no one has mentioned, is Bronco Mendenhall.
If you want someone out of left field that hasn't been mentioned before, how about Gregg Williams? His son played here, he has NFL experience as both a coordinator and head coach, runs a complex attacking scheme on defense, during his NFL suspension was at all of VTs games and offered advice/tips to players besides Chase as well.
I don't think he'll be the coach, but he is a possibility that I hadn't seen mentioned before.
If we were looking for a defensive minded head coach we would have already named BUD as HC. I don't see them bringing in a defensive person ahead of Bud, that would be a slap in the face IMO.
If people have trouble stomaching how Rich Rod runs a football program, I wonder what they would have to say about Williams' head hunting system

Part of me would love to see Whit pull a massive troll job, and keep the new coach under wraps, then at the press conference, have a chair marked, "Reserved for R. Rodriguez." The press conference starts and he motions to a guy in the back, and says "This is my friend, Randy Rodriguez. I met him at Home Depot this weekend and he's a super guy, so I invited him to be here today. The next head coach is going to be [insert not Rich Rod's name here]."

But in seriousness, I think it's very different when you name an interim head coach and then give him the job a short time later. There probably wasn't even much of a coaching search.
USCw could very well do this exact same thing too.

That was internal elevation of interim coach to full coach. At this time we could go internal or external, hence why we will be the first to announce a new coach.
I think Whit also knows the work needed in keeping stability and limiting the impact a coaching search has on recruiting. I think the name will be revealed 3 days after the UVA game officially for recruiting purposes and keep the attention on Frank as long as possible. Mid week announcement mean two days for media coverage then sink into the backpage articles and to fan sites after the weekend.
ehh... I think the announcement (if we really do already have the agreement in place) will be made the Monday after the UVa game. Allow Sunday for the stories of Frank's last game to play out, and then go immediately into the next era on Monday. Don't let VT stay in the news for too long in regards to reminiscing about the past, and change the focus towards the future as quick as you can.
Bowl will be announced on Sunday/Monday. Do you hold a PC to discuss the Bowl at the same time as the new HC? I'm not sure how Whit will handle that.
You don't need a press conference for a bowl, you generally handle that through a press release, coordinated with the bowl itself.
Plus, the bowl won't be announced until the following Sunday. There's still the championship games to get through on December 5.
I think it'll be like Frank's retirement announcement. Officially on Monday, but it'll get out on Sunday.
Plenty of examples of a coach being announced as the head coach of a new school before leaving for that school. Not every coach is Rich Rod and runs away from their team.

Filling the vacancy and announcing the hire are 2 different things. It may be finalized soon or already but we may not get an announcement at that same time.
If we have the agreement in place, unless the coach has a team vying for a title, you make the announcement immediately and get him on the fundraising and recruiting trail for your school. There really is nothing to gain by delaying that announcement.
Yep, remember the Buzz announcement came quickly as well. I think that Whit won't wait very long to announce it to the public.

This might imply Rittenberg knows a deal a has been reached, at least unofficially.
That's my thinking as well. This is a pretty bold statement to make to not have some information from a reliable source to base it on. I mean when ESPN is calling us the #2 opening out there, to say we're filling it almost immediately after the season is essentially saying we've already got our guy.
also factor in that espn people seem to be spending a good amount of time in blacksburg it would make sense that some stuff is coming out.

On my VT espn feed there's a story that's teased as "The sense in the coaching community is that Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock has zeroed in on a favorite, and that it's probably Memphis' Justin Fuente." But I don't have ESPN Insider so the article cuts off before it gets that far.

It's literally only two more short paragraphs, with little real analysis other than Fuente doesn't want an SEC job because of recruiting, and Tech isn't an SEC job, ergo Fuente will go to Tech. It's just more of the same blowhard bullshit speculation.
