Cody Journell looking to get picked up as a free agent

He posted this on his facebook page asking everyone to share it. I guess he changed his mind on trying to get to the NFL. Does he get some looks, or is there just too much baggage with him?

I'm just going to be nice and say I hope he got his life together. The last few times I saw him downtown he was.....a mess to put it lightly. That said I wish him well. Hokie Nation and all.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Let's hope he has kicked his bad habits.

I'll see myself out.

You know where it would have been a great place to show off that leg and make field goals THE SUGAR BOWL

Of course not. Not like you have a good reason or anything. /s

Just Andy Bitter

Except the backup made like 4 in regulation.

Kickoff out of bounds, Beamer went for it on 4th instead of long field goal, missed FG in OT.

But you couldn't have asked for more from the guy being put on the spot on that stage.

edit: yeah I know this is about CJ and not "the backup", but who knows what might have happened.

Meyer did GREAT for a guy thrown under the bus by his teammate, and that's what Cody did let down his teammate.

Wasn't Meyer third string and the second string got sent home for missing curfew the night before? He let his teammate down just as much as Cody did if you ask me.

“I like the donuts.” -Bud Foster

In all fairness, that game was not lost because of kicking issues. The main issue was stupid offense, and a busted defensive play where the DB's took each other out and gave up a TD. Missing that kick at the end hurt, but we should have been up by 2 or 3 TD's on McChicken by then.

The fake punt didn't help.

The damn PAC shit refs didn't help.

Not to mention on that Michigan touchdown where Whitley just missed the interception, we only had 10 players on the field. If you watch that video, it's hard to count players pre-snap since you can't see the whole field, but if you slow it down when the ball is thrown, you'll notice there are 6 defensive players on the offensive side of the 50, then 2 players near the defensive 35-yard line, and 2 players near the WR at the 20-yard line. During the replay, Todd Blackledge mentions our coaches were "trying to call timeout because of the formation"-- that was only half true, we were trying to call timeout but it was because we realized we were short a player.

I counted 11 guys directly post-snap. But they definitely weren't lined up correctly.

Edit: Was looking at the 1st down play. My fault. Just proves we had multiple plays where the defense was out of position.

Look again-- there are only 10, which is why Exum & Hosley are confused on how to match-up. It might be easier to look at the clip starting at 3:51. You'll see a left CB (9 - Hill), an edge rusher standing on the left end (95 - McCray), 3 down linemen (98 - D Hopkins, 92 - Maddy, 66 - Wilson), an edge rusher standing on the right end (17 - Fuller), a MLB (58 - Tyler), and a deep safety (15 - Whitley). That's 8 players. When the play starts and pans right, you'll see 2 more players (1 - Exum & 20 - Hosley) closer to the right sideline, which makes 10 total.

You're absolutely correct. I "rewound" too far and was watching the first down play right after the roughing the kicker call.

IS that Emory and Henry Field?

Edit:Yep it is

if Greg Hardy can sign an NFL contract, why not Cody? hopefully he stays off the weed!

I don't think you blame the weed. Plenty of people are able to smoke pot and still manage to have happy and productive lives. It's the choices he made, the folks he hung out with, and the general idiocy of youth that did him in. I believe in second chances, and in his case he's on his second hand's worth of fingers of chances, but still, I hope he pulls it together and grows up. There is/was talent there.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I'll be honest, I thought this post was going to say "Cody Journell looking to get picked up from jail".

I think we can stop here. This closes this thread down.

The Dude Abides

I'm rooting for him. I obviously don't know this for a fact, but if I had to guess, Cody is one of the only kids from Giles County to ever make it out on a D1 scholarship to a school like VT, and he just didn't have a hometown mentor because there had never been kids in that position before.

Regardless, I think he realizes that his football life isn't immortal and he is seeing that window closing. His film does look impressive as well. Hopefully he gets a chance.

Sorry but I really don't think a hometown mentor is a requirement to not be in constant trouble, especially considering the situations that many athletes come from. As others have said, i hope he's got his life together but I don't feel sorry for him or think he got an unfair deal here.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The problem with Cody is he had a bunch of things swept under the rug in high school so he had a misconception that his actions had no consequences.

That's the problem with being a star athlete in high school... Things get swept under the rug.

the problem is the kicker was the star athlete in highschool.

With an offense that didn't throw passes or even have a QB. That's only a slight exaggeration. That wing T offense bugged me like GTs 1920s chop block based offense does.

All you gotta do is line up 10 corn fed bulldozers and snap it to the kid with the freakish speed and watch him run. Works great if you have the personnel.

Isn't that Giles County to the 10th power?

South HIll?

Honestly, I'd be more impressed if he took a bong rip in between kicks!

I hope he's finally got his act together, and that he makes the grade.

Glad to see most people have moved on. Cody's a good guy. He just likes to party and have a good time too. It's pathetic that some people still shit talk when he posts stuff to instagram and other social media.

He just likes to party and have a good time

and storm into apartments with a pellet gun over stolen weed. and clear out a BDubs with pepper spray. and get permanently kicked off the team after numerous chances.

My point is it's hard to judge someone you don't know other than by their actions and Cody's actions certainly caused him to lose the benefit of the doubt for being a good guy. I wouldn't support anyone who continued to trash talk him for no reason but I also don't blame people for not feeling sorry for the guy.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Yeah can't disagree with you on that. I was more speaking from personal experience; he's always been cool when I've hung out with him. I think his problem is (hopefully was) the company he keeps and his recklessness.

He just likes to party and have a good time

And, also, help screw us over in the Sugar Bowl.

If there was ever a game for us to earn the nickname "chokies", it was that. Michigan broke a record for least amount of yards for a winning team in a BCS bowl game. Kicking was far from the problem especially when our backup played so well.

Be polite. (c)hokies is a curse word.

Good for him. I hope he makes it.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

I hope he makes it.

I see what you did there.

So it seems that CJ has continued his career in Germany as a kicker/punter and a wide out...

Using /s is for cowards.

He has had his screw ups, but I am hopeful that he has turned his life around and still doing what he likes.

Good for him. Didn't know they had football in Germany.

I didn't know that until my Vikings drafted their (apparent) football super lord.

heard this guys stories on ESPN radio Sunday before the draft. Guy never played football in his life before playing for Germany and seems to be some freak athlete. Could be a nice surprise in the draft.

if he gets the "why" figured out (not easy), the "what" should fall into place

Having the flexibility to play multiple positions probably helped him get one of these slots because the German Football League limits the number of American, Canadian, Mexican, and Japanese players a team can have. Team can have 10 total, 6 are allowed to dress but only 2 can be on the field at any one time. This is a big improvement as it used to be that they could have only 2 on the team period.

Good point. I had forgotten about those regulations until you mentioned it. Had a few guys from my unit that played in the German league when I was stationed there. Leg for you sir.

I presume spectators are permitted to consume handsome amount of tasty German beer at these events??

Given German sports culture as it relates to fussball, one can assume not only that drinking is permitted, but practically required.

American, Canadian, Mexican, and Japanese

That's quite an odd combination of nationalities to limit in a German football league. Really, Japanese?

A little known rule is you can't have Italians, Germans, and Japanese on the same team. Germans, Austrians, and Turks are also a bad idea...
