VT/WVU Home and Home Rumored for '20 and '21

A buddy of mine has a friend in the WVU athletic dept - he says the series will be announced as early as this week. The source says Beamer is meeting Oliver Luck at the Greenbrier this week and announcing the games.

This is hearsay, but a credible source. I hope it's true and can't wait to beat them again - a much better rivalry than UVA.

Great move by VT. Hopefully the rivalry has died down enough so we don't have to worry about flying batteries!

It's WVU...you always have to worry about flying batteries. Agreed on it being a great move by VT football-wise though.

I'm all for playing WVU again (I mean, we've got a freakin' trophy for the matchup), but honestly I would prefer it be a pair of neutral site games. I have no interest in seeing our fans or players head into Morgantown and deal with that garbage. I loved it when WVU came to Lane, but never felt comfortable watching the boys play in up in Mo-Vegas.

this would be the only way id ever leave lane to see that game. the 2004 game was incredible, but i had a friend go to the game in 2005 and she got hit in the head with a full beer can which cause her to have to get stitches. what kind of guy throws a beer can at a girl's head....well a wvu fan clearly. but a neutral site game would be kinda cool to go to if it was at the right place

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Maybe a WVU "girl" threw the beer?

The Blacksburg F.D. better be at full strength that weekend

WVU will always be our biggest rival to me. But with that said I have not interest in playing them. No fan base or team should have to deal with such horrific fans. They can live in Big12 irrelevance.

Rip his freaking head off!

So we're going to play both Michigan and WVU in the same years? I wouldn't mind, but I doubt it. 2018 & 2019 would make more sense, but We'll probably be playing ND one of those years. Maybe home vs ND in 2018, at WVU in 2019, and home vs WVU & at Michigan in 2020?

Playoff is gonna make SOS a big big deal...

How about WVU @ home in 2018 and away 3 years before never?

WVU played JMU at FedEx last season and traveled well, especially considering it was for a D1AA opponent. This would seem like a logical neutral site and solid money grab for both schools since it's likely tickets would sell out if it were in DC.

However, I agree with those in highly opposing a home and away with them. Awful awful home fans, I don't even feel safe watching us play at WVU from my couch, let alone in the stands.

NO! NO! NO! NO MORE NEUTRAL SITE GAMES AT FEDEX FIELD!!!

At least until they replace that god awful field. I've seen better football fields at middle schools.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

I could care less about the facilities. Mine and many others here chief complaint is the fact we always lose games in a heartbreaking fashion there.

Not to mention spending a fortune to see it live...

Call me disinterested. Until their fan base grows up, which will never happen, then Nancy Reagan's 3 precious words should apply: JUST SAY NO!

Much rather play an SEC team, or PSU, or even a Pac-10 team. Not them again. The rivalry is dead, RIP. VT can schedule a lot of other teams that are more nationally relevant and would help with SOS. Stop trying to save a few bucks on transportation costs by bussing the team up to Morgantown. Not a road trip worth taking, would rather go South or Midwest or West coast. Rant over, Go Hokies!

PSU @ FedEx (or home-away-neutral).
Tennessee (home-home, that Bristol game will never happen)
KY, sure, why not. USCe. UGA.
Texas A&M, let's do that one again.

But no WVU. I have no desire to rekindle that rivalry.

The Bristol game actually *can't* happen now. They built a large jumbo-tron type thing in the center of the grassy area. No room for football now.

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

I'd sell my first kid to start a rivalry game with A&M. Such similar schools/ fan bases.

Agreed, especially with Kyle Field being overhauled to become one of the best college football stadiums! Also, it would be neat to have the games be the military appreciation games with both Corps of Cadets.

How much? I need help painting my house.

I'd rather do a WVU home/home than a fedex game....but I'd rather do a home/home with UT, UK, SC, or GA than WVU. I think that those teams fall into our recruiting territory, and could raise our profile in those areas.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Would be hard pressed to think with Michigan series those same years that VT would schedule WVU unless it was a situation of Michigan home and WVU away then vice versa. Could be for toughen up schedule for playoffs.

WVU is a rivalry game that I'd like to see continue and I was there at the 2005 game. Their crowd definitely gets very rowdy though and I think it would be a good FedEx game. I think it's the sort of game that builds toughness in a team.

We should do both schools in the same year and add in Cal and Delaware. Orange and Maroon vs. blue and gold x 4

Tailgate QB, you may have scooped everyone on this announcement. If so, well done.

Still unconfirmed but the latest I'm hearing is the official announcement may be made tomorrow - '20 and '21 are most likely the dates, but there is a possibility of some schedule shuffling to move the games to '16 and '17.

Beat WVU

Since the VT series ended, WVU has hosted teams such as Auburn, Miss St, LSU, Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas St, etc without incident. Nothing wrong with a heated rivalry. I would love to play Hokies again.

We've had nothing but outstanding comments from visiting teams from the Big 12, with many calling it the best road game experience they've ever had. The gameday culture is changing in Morgantown for the better.

I hope so. Since I've never been there I can't speak from experience, but I've heard it was pretty bad back in the day. I do remember, however, one of the last games being paused because the refs had to tell the audio booth to stop pumping crowd noise through the PA while we had the ball.

All the best to our new WVU members.

i concur, welcome fellas. i wish we had more fans of other schools coming around to chat, as long as they keep it respectful of course. i'm actually surprised no bammers have found their way onto the boards.

I seem to recall there was one Bammer on that was very respectful and had some great insight...if I have time I'll find the thread and post.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS "It just made sense."

That was the sentiment of both WVU athletic director Oliver Luck and Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer upon announcing the renewal of a football series between the two schools, who will once again battle for the Black Diamond Trophy.

It's going to take some time for the two old rivals to meet again the first game will be played in Morgantown on Sept. 18, 2021 and the return game will be played in Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 24, 2022 but both representatives are looking forward to renewing the series, which WVU leads 28-22-1.

"It's down the road a little bit, but it's the first time they could squeeze us into their schedule," said Luck, who played in the series four times, splitting those four meetings from 1978 through 1981. "But it becomes more important given the geography of the Big 12. Getting a school like Virginia Tech means a lot."

"It's two great universities that have had some great competition," agreed Beamer, who's 12-7 against the Mountaineers. "We've always had great respect for them, and I think they feel the same way about us. Where we're located, it's the right thing to do. We'll take fans to Morgantown, and they'll bring fans to Blacksburg."

The schools played every year from 1973 through 2005, 13 of those meetings as Big East Conference foes from 1991 through 2003, but the series stopped after back-to-back Hokie wins in 2004 and 2005 as Virginia Tech joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.

It's Happening

BOOM!!!!!!!!

Beat WVU

2021 will be an interesting schedule with Michigan, WVU, and Richmond on the schedule. Who knows where any of those teams will be at that point.
