I thought O leary was still coaching just resigned as athletic director

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Who cares?! We got ours, hee, hee! Yea, Fuente!!!! This Bud's for you...

The older I get, the better I was...Go Hokies!!!

Its going to be a bad year to try and find a new coach, we cannot compete with da $$$ of either usc's or under armor and we cannot compete with the dusty rings in Florida...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

I think USCw may have their coach in house already.

The last time we all thought that they kicked Orgeron to the curb and hired Sark.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I don't see why you don't think we can't compete with South Carolina, a program that had no football history until Spurrier? Plus there are plenty of quality candidates out there

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

1.) I don't think we have much overlap with the candidates for Miami or USCw. If there is, it's going to be people on the fringe of either one or both schools.

2.) If we're not looking this year, it'll be next year, and there's probably an equal number of job openings every year. Basically, you can't hold off a coaching search just because you think the playing field might be easier next year.

1.) I don't think we have much overlap with the candidates for Miami or USCw. If there is, it's going to be people on the fringe of either one or both schools.

This. No one that is going to be interviewing at USCw also has a stop in Blacksburg on their interview list. They need a proven commodity or will open their coffers and overpay for a hot OC name to appease their boosters after Sark.

The Dude Abides

Better to be in the mix this year with some of the up & coming HC candidates that are going to be moving up this year. Next year they may all be locked up as HC's

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

Next year there will be a new batch of up and coming HC candidates. Many will fail, some will succeed (in both years).

Not saying we should wait just saying there is always a new batch of hot candidates.

How much of it really comes down to money? Would a coach take, say a million dollars more to coach a program that has no fan base, and no campus stadium over a program that fills the seats and has an energetic fan base?

If we're HC shopping (which we should be right now) then I don't see The U as competition. Our main competitor will be UVA, which, if they are smart, they are shopping right now too.

If this is the year of firings/retirings, then Bud Foster might be the best option. However, I have a sick feeling in my gut that he will follow the ranks of Spaziani.

Ok everyone throws around Miami not having an on campus stadium. I have to ask why does it matter for Miami? Have they ever had an on campus stadium? With an on campus stadium you MIGHT gain 5,000 more people in the seats a game. The Miami metro area has enough people that if they really had a fan base that would fill an on campus stadium they would have enough to get half of sun life filled.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I agree, the U is such a strong brand that it doesn't need the stuff that other programs outside of top tier would need. I mean you have the beach, numerous NCs, and a hotbed of talent in your backyard, an on-campus stadium to clinch the deal isn't really necessary at that point.

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

No income tax.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I've never lived in a no income tax state, but isn't that made up with higher real estate and sales taxes? It's not like Florida doesn't need the money, they just reallocated it so that it seems like a good deal.

I know when you compare Virginia to ....say...Connecticut, Virginia is basically a "no real estate tax" state.

Sort of. But the lack of state and local income tax on a very high head coach income (perhaps 50x the avg income in Florida) easily offsets the relatively modest increase in real estate and sales tax rates/taxes paid.

The weather isn't the only reason why so many highly paid athletes reside in Florida.

Higher real estate and sales taxes, and "tourist taxes" (Often a bed tax in coastal and entertainment areas.)

One of the things mentioned in the first part of "The U" was how much it meant to the people/neighborhoods around the old orange bowl that the University played there near their neighborhood. Some of their best players from the heyday came from those neighborhoods. So one conclusion that can be drawn was that some of the most ardent fans of the "U" felt betrayed when the university up and left for a different part of Miami. A more upscale part of the city I might add. Then there is all the memories attached to the old Orange Bowl. All those victories and what not. Basically, the "U" incurred the wrath of the football gods by bulldozing a huge chunk of their (The "U") mojo.

Go Hokies!

James Madison had over 300 applicants when that job came available. I beleive VT will have a huge amount of appliacants apply because it is one of the best spots to be within the coaching world.

How many of those were actual coaches with a shot at at least getting an interview? Not just fans, guys with delusions of grandeur and students at JMU?

I agree, probably 295 are not qualified. My point is and I have many friends in the coaching world both college and high school is that from a coaches perspective the job in Blacksburg is a gem of a job.

Good news.. Miami is going to go after a "U" type person.. My guess is Butch Davis.

My top three candidates for Miami. Davis, Schinao and surprise pick, Holgersen

Holgorsen

Whaaaat? Why?

I think they should hire Lane Kiffin. Would go from 0 back to da U $wagggg right quick.

Oh man that train wreck would be amazing to watch! Lane Kiffin to Miami!

Bama fans are probably rejoicing

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Holgorsen would be no better than Golden. I think it's between Davis, Schiano, and maybe Cristobal as a sleeper (don't see him getting it though).

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

Miami darkhorse: Petrino.

Richt is a U guy, wouldn't be surprised for them to go after him if he isn't with Georgia anymore after this season.

I'd say the odds of Miami hiring Butch Davis are very low.

Here is an excellent article from SB Nation on Miami's coaching search. Godfrey and Elliot are spot on here. As it stands right now, VT would be the best coaching gig in the ACC should it come open. Hell, the more I think about it, the more I feel like UVA is a better job than Miami.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Not sure how much steam is here, but could you see Butch leaving UT? or Charlie Strong? Even if one did, that opens up another job.

edit: wrong Butch.

Different Butch, and according to #SOURCES (Charlie Strong), Charlie Strong isn't interested in the Miami gig (although it's not like he could say he's interested anyways).

If Miami gets a strong recruiter/coach, with a competent staff we are in big trouble!

Look on the bright side. If we get a strong recruiter/coach, Miami Everyone is in trouble!

Jerry Kill just retired for health reasons, effective immediately. Go ahead and add Minnesota to the list.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Ugggh, sucks for him. He's a good coach, but once his seizures started, his career was over. He was never going to be able to be hired at another school, even though he knows football.

That's really disappointing, I was hoping he had a good 5-10 years in him at Minney.

You think he might take an office job though? Non coaching coordinator with staffs expanding so much nowadays having a smart guy in the office can't hurt.

I don't know the specifics about his medical condition, just always admired his football acumen.

He's a good dude who knows his stuff. Never good to lose one of those.

He has epilepsy and has fought back from Stage 4 kidney cancer (9 years cancer free now). Gritty stuff.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

The only surprise I had reading about that was that it hadn't already happened before now.

But does anyone else get a brief second of sadness/panic when you see a headline about Coach Kill....and you see Kill and Seizure before fully reading it?

Sports Illustrated and ESPN both have speculated that Tech is one of the best jobs available (if it becomes open). Definitely more attractive than Miami due to facilities, fan support, ability to win in a weak division (but same as Miami) and not competing directly for recruits with UF and FSU. SI had it only below the USC.w job.....add to the above a dynamic young AD to work for and we will get a great coach, mark it down.

I also hear more and more radio shows panning the Miami job.

Le Betard mentioned yesterday that Kirby Holcutt left Miami as AD to be AD at Texas Tech. That tells you about all you need to know.

I don't think Miami is much competition for VT, they will almost certainly go with someone with connections to the program (Chudzinski?) or some other big name that will interest their non-student fans (Schiano?). Whether its a better job than VT is pretty much moot.

My only worry is that according to radio, Miami has said they are going to open the pursestrings for the new coach. But that could also mean just paying him 1.5-2 mil. We don't know what Golden was making.

Sounds like everyone is willing to open the purse strings for a great coach. And why wouldn't they? Football is a cash cow.

The arms race is in full swing.

With all the current coaching openings and potential of more soon I can see some borderline teams like Purdue and Indiana wait to fire their coaches.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Indiana has a good coach, they should wait it out a year or so. They are making progress. It's Indiana Football scaled progress, but it's there.

Haazzzeeelll sucks, Purdue shouldn't think twice about letting him go. The Northern Illinois coach (Carey?) and PJ Fleck would be good fits. Maybe Brohm. There are a ton of good G5 coaches, but I wouldn't mind seeing some of the FCS coaches get shots as well.

Yeah, Indiana fans need to worry about Wilson leaving, not him getting fired.

Purdue announced that Hazell WILL be back next season.

Probably just riding out the contract like UVA with London.

Jerry Kill's Press conference was intense.

Good for him. He's making the best life decision he can make, even though it sounds like he's not thrilled about it.

Best guess for current situation regarding CFB and 2016...
Whit and CFB have had "the talk". CFB knows he has no more choices. Probably Bud has had the talk as well and that conversation likely left more options open for him like "you can stay if... the next guy says you can" otherwise we pay you and do all we can to help you find a new home because you have been a badass for a long time and only this year sucked.
CFB looked glum knowing he had no choice other than to go how he likes...THIS YEAR. How he chooses to announce it, tell his kids, tell his recruits, tell the fans Whit doesn't care. That's coaches decision and we will support you however you want to do that or however you would like to celebrate your career over the remainder of the games in 2015. But you may not come back and I need to be talking and flying around to our prospective new coaches right now to continue the tradition of winning you have established here. Questions? Good talk.

Best guess.

out of that list, if I were a coach, my first choice (other than VT, obviously) would be Hawaii...cause not matter what happens on the field, I'd still be living in Hawaii.

Unfortunately, the university is in Honolulu.

don't mean you gotta live in Honolulu. Maybe live in Halawa, or Pearl City and commute the 20 minutes over

Why? LSU boosters, the ones pushing to fire Miles and who will pay his buyout, don't want a rising star, they want an established star coach.

http://www.nola.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2015/11/les_miles_tenure_at_lsu...

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is the main target for many foundation members. Other names tossed around include Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, TCU head coach Gary Patterson and even former NFL coach Jon Gruden.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Of course Jon Gruden's name has been tossed around. His name has come up in every coaching search since he joined Monday Night Football.

True but if they hire away a big name then the school who they hired a coach away from will be in the hunt for a new HC (in that example FSU). Either way another team will probably be looking for a new coach and more than likely it will be from another reputable program.

Using /s is for cowards.

If LSU fires Miles, and they go after an established coach (like Jimbo Fisher), this will set off a domino effect of vacancies. Say Jimbo is hired away from FSU, and the FSU job becomes open. That job would definitely take away some of the best targets out there.

Apparently, we already have a deal done with someone though, so this series of events may not even matter. It's looking more and more like Chip Kelly will be back in the college ranks somewhere at season's end too. I'm willing to bet USCw will hold out as long as possible and wait on him.

I'm interested in Miles for VT. Not over Richt or Herman, but over Morris (who seems the most likely choice now).

I was interested in MIles until I realized how old he is (62). I don't want to have to hear constant retirement speculation and be going through this again in 5 years.

That's a young 62 though. Cutcliffe is 61 and he feels 5+ years older than Miles.

But it's a valid point. I'm expecting no matter who we have, 5 years may be all we get out of them.

I'd prefer to go younger, but I also wouldn't question a hire like Miles.

One thing is for sure, though. Whit has some options this year.

I feel the opposite. Of those four, I think my order is Herman, Morris, Miles, Richt.

Hey man, you've got Paul Rhodes listed under Iowa, think you mean Iowa state.

Anyone want to start a "leg pool" to guess the next head coach fired? The biggest name/school to fire their coach? And total number of FBS coaches who will be fired this year?

Starting to hear there's a growing chance that Chip Kelly could be headed to coach the Miami Hurricanes next year

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

If true, sad that he would take the 4th best job available in college football. Heard Mike Greenberg saying Kelly would be either at USCw or Miami next year. USC I will grant you, but I don't see what makes Miami more attractive than VT or USCe. Can't fill up the stadium, little fan support to begin with, limited resources, terrible facilities, and a long row to tow with beating out UF and FSU for South Florida talent.

You put Chip Kelly in South Beach, it won't matter how many fans don't attend their games, he'll dominate that recruiting ground and they'll quickly have one of, if not the top offense in the country, capable of hanging 70 on anyone anywhere.

I don't see how they can afford to pay him what he'd command, but if they can land him, they're going to be very good very fast.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I just think if he is really going back to college football, he's going to listen to better jobs first. If USCw wants him, I doubt he has to look much further.

There's a lot of disagreement amongst the media about how good/bad the Miami job is. You could argue it's the second best job. You could also argue it's the fourth best. 2-4 are really going to be decided by what the candidate wants.

I agree, it is very subjective. For me, the deal breaker comes down to the fan support and stadium. Miami may have past titles they can hang their hat on, great recruiting area, the flashy South Florida lifestyle, etc. But VT and USCe both have a much stronger fan base and way better atmosphere. So if all else is considered equal between these three jobs, then you factor in fan support/stadium location and atmosphere, that is where I put Miami below VT and USCe.

I just can't imagine if Chip had all three as options and was interested, he would elect to play in a 3/4s empty stadium 25 miles away from campus. But I could be wrong. As you say, it depends on the candidate's perspective. Maybe he just wants the South Beach lifestyle. But from what I've read about Chip, he's a very private/reserved person and has a very small group of personal friends in the northeast.

For me, the deal breaker comes down to the fan support and stadium.

I think most coaches would agree that Miami's recruiting base tremendously outweighs the fan support issue. Plus - Miami as a city is all about the 'hot' thing. If Miami starts winning, the bandwagon fans will show up in droves.

Yep, and the Miami recruiting base acts as a feeder to the Miami program, though some arguably shady deals under the table throughout the region. You get the right guy in there, and it will be incredibly easy to win a lot of games in a short time period. A guy like Chip Kelly going to Miami would have them be the next Alabama in very short order.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

So if there is mutual interest between Kelly and Miami, and this doomsday situation for VT could happen, could we realistically make a run at Chip Kelly? I would think he would be a top ideal coaching candidate, and it would be prudent to do everything we can to keep him from going to Miami. Either that, or we would have to counter with an equally home run-caliber hire.

I think that VT has their coach locked up already, and it's either Herman, Morris or Fuente (rumors I hear say Morris but who the hell knows).

The whole coaching search this season is a game. Agents are floating names to gauge interest and leverage salary negotiations. Donors enjoy the game because they feel 'in the know' and think their opinion matters (which is the case for 1% of them). The good AD's have it figured out, the bad ones will not.

I think our best chance is to lock up a new coach as early as possible, and start 'damage control' - assemble/finalize a staff and re-recruit current players and recruits. The sooner we have our team and staff finalized, the sooner we can start making changes. If Morris/Herman/Fuente/Bud/Whoever right the ship quickly and swiftly, start recruiting correctly and start developing players, we will be able to go toe-to-toe with Miami, just like we did when we were in the Big East.

I'm starting to feel like it's Morris as well. Herman would be my first choice, but if we land Morris and he can get Jeff Scott from Clemson as his OC, that would be a pretty potent combination as far as coaching and recruiting is concerned. Keeping Bud would be great as well. I worry he is going to bolt back to Texas as soon as a big job opens up there, but I guess that is the nature of the beast these days.

Except Miami can't pay the money to upgrade football faclties and stadium like Bama can. At its heart Miami is still a small school with a small alumni base and a small but vocal donor support. All those NFL players giving their opinion rarely give money with it.

Except Miami can't pay the money to upgrade football faclties and stadium like Bama can

Miami doesn't have to, as their name sells itself, especially in that region. In fact, part of their selling point is that they don't have to do so, as they put all those players in the NFL by basing it on nothing more than allowing them to be themselves on the field.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This, this, this, a thousand times this. If Chip goes there and starts winning, the stadium will be packed. Would be a good idea to steal back Randy Shannon to be DC there as well, I think

With all the athletes in South Florida he could recruit, this would be very bad for us.

that would suck for us

Onward and upward

Ill take the opposite...

1.) London stays - hes got a hefty buyout and only one more year on his contract and theyve been winning
2.) Miles talked with LSU officials and he'll retire in '16 apparently, so I honestly would be surprised if they fired him, but the way this year is playing out I think adds momentum to pulling the trigger rather than not. That being said, my tentative vote is Miles stays.
3.) Mark Richt stays at UGA
4.) Charlie Strong leaves Texas
5.) Kyle Whittingham takes the USC job

You are probably right on Miles, I read he has a 16 million dollar buyout if fired before Jan, and 12.5 after Jan 1st. Those are BIG numbers, especially when you calculate in they are probably going to have to buy out the new coaches contract as well.

Sidebar...I found this link from an old post, the tenures of the ACC coaches (from right after Golden got fired)

VT - Beamer 29
GT - Johnson 8
Duke - Cutcliffe 8
Clemson - Swinney 7 (plus interim time)
FSU - Fisher 6
UVA - London 6
UNC - Fedora 4
Syracuse - Shafer 3
NC State - Doeren 3
BC - Addazio 3
Louisville - Petrino 2 current, 6 total
Wake - Clawson 2
Pitt - Narduzzi 1
Miami - no one

And what that list will look like next year: EDIT, updated 12/5/15
GT - Johnson 9
Duke - Cutcliffe 9
Clemson - Swinney 8 (plus interim time)
FSU - Fisher 7
UNC - Fedora 5
NC State - Doeren 4
BC - Addazio 4
Louisville - Petrino 3 current, 7 total
Wake - Clawson 3
Pitt - Narduzzi 2
VT - Fuente 1
Miami - Richt 1
UVA - Mendenhall 1
Syracuse - Babers 1

CPJ will be the longest tenured ACC Coach. (He was hired a week before Cutcliffe.)

So, just 10 coaches left to remove for VT to return to the top of this list!

Narduzzi might be the third best coach in the ACC.

UVA - London 7

Fingers crossed.

I really don't know how they keep him, but the financials of firing him present some issues...$2.5 million to not coach...you'd have to think they'd fire him, but I'm wondering if they have an LSU type booster bunch that would pony up the cash to buy him out...the Mike Sanford talk makes sense especially considering he's young enough to where his asking price won't be as high, I hope they don't because honestly, I think he might actually be a good coach, he's at least a good OC.

SI.com reporting London has been dismissed. Beat writers picking up on it, so better chance this report is accurate.

OFFICIAL: resigned, not dismissed.

RIP, Timecop, and thanks for the memories.

38-0, bro!

Also, Schiano to loluva seems like it would be another Groh, which is just fine with me.

He resigned!!!!! He is just sticking it to VT one more time! No buyout, no keeping him on one more year.

I'd imagine he's still getting a nice golden parachute for "resigning"

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Oh, he's getting paid. See my comment in the other thread.

"Exit light..."

Yea just did, but it should still safe LOLUVA some money. I just hope they screw this hire up also.

Yeah, I think their whole claim of "our candidates will be involved in postseason play" is just a PR move to try to distract from the Fuente to VT narrative. If the reports are true (Fuente+Foster at VT), UVA is in danger of getting buried for a long time to come.

"Exit light..."

Confused, when did Timecop ever stick VT with anything? Unless you mean the copious timeouts at his disposal.

I remember him sticking VT with a lower-rated recruiting class than I expected a time or two, for no good reason that I can think of other than to squander those young men's college playing time.

3 coaches out today already.

Make that 5 jobs open today. UVA, UGA, RUTGERS, TOLEDO, MEMPHIS

It makes me laugh that Flood was quoted yesterday saying he was expecting to keep his job. Both he and Hermann were fired with extreme* prejudice* today because their program is a full-blow-tire-fire* mode. What a mess*. Glad the Big Ten wanted their TV market.

* because I like characterizing it this way

According to Twitter, Memphis has offered their opening to their DC Barry Odom.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

Makes sense for them. He wasn't coming with Fuente, and they'll keep some consistency.

Doom is the DC at Missouri. The reports out there about him and the Memphis job are all over the map.

What many consider the top job opening is now filled, USCw named Clay Helton the interim head coach as the new Head Coach.

That's interesting. Leave's Richt available to either UVa or Miami, and he's at UVa today...

Personally, I'd love to see Richt get into commentating. I think he would be light years ahead of Mac Brown. I'm tired of hearing every single running play called some type of sweep.

Onward and upward

I wish they'd trade, and let Mack Brown go to UVa as coach, leaving Richt as a game commentator.

After hearing about who other schools have hired, I feel more and more excited about us hiring Justin Fuente. He could easily be the best hire of the year!
