Va. - University of Virginia director of athletics Craig Littlepage announced today the resignation of head football coach Mike London, effective immediately.
Littlepage met with London this morning to discuss the future of the Virginia football program. At that time, Littlepage and London decided a change in leadership was in the best interests of the program. Littlepage has not specified a time frame for concluding the search, citing the fact that many of the possible candidates will be involved in postseason play. Littlepage will not make further comments until the search has concluded.
No more Timecop.

Lmao! Just posted this up on my fakebook pg last night. #TRUTH #12-0
NOT YOU!
Littlepage: There's no "U" in "TEAM", coach.
London: Yeah there is, it's right at the front: You-Vee-Ay. See?
Does this mean he forfeited his buyout? Or, maybe a number was separately negotiated. If so, it would be the first/last good thing he has done for their football program.
End of the article linked above:
I wish I could get paid so much to fail so miserably...I really hope my boss is reading this thread.
FTFY
How much did he make per win while at LOLUVA?
My very rough calculations have it at just around $590K/win.
Assumed salaries of 2010 = $1.7M, 2011 = $1.8M, 2012 = $1.9M, 2013 = $2.0M, 2014 = $2.63M (he got a raise after going 2-10..), 2015 = $3.2M and a $2.7M buyout).
27 total wins
Now calculate Beamer's...
Over the same period of time 2010-Present, Beamer is at just under $300K/win. So essentially half the price. I am sure that the value increases significantly through the 2000s and 1990s as we were winning 10+ games most years and paying him significantly less.
In all honesty that was a classy move by London, lets just hope they loluva the hire and get the wrong guy.....again!!!!
I'm pretty sure it was less a 'classy move,' than it was a 'jump before being pushed move.'
If that announced buyout was less than he would have received had he been pushed, I'll concede that part. But otherwise, we all know - as much as we'd love for him to stay - he was Dead Man Walking yesterday.
What coach in the post season would leave to coach at loluva? I can only assume he is talking about high school or 1aa.
they really want the OC from Notre Dame...no head coach in the right mind would make the lateral move to UVa
Lateral?
They sure seem to think they have a lot of candidates: http://www.streakingthelawn.com/2015/11/29/9724378/virginia-football-coa...
Usually after we beat UVA, I tend to glance at The Sabre to see the meltdowns. With Mike London resigning, it was a gold mine of amusement. Seriously, someone thought they could maybe get Art Briles or Gary Patterson. Now they are talking Mack Brown (please, oh please, take him. It'd be so UVA to get a has-been and we'd no longer have to hear Mack say everything is a "speed sweep" on TV) among others. The thing about this situation is that it was the best move for Mike London and the worst move UVA could afford to have happen. Now, Mike London can be picked up by Memphis or some other small school and UVA has to compete with all the other programs with openings after the big dogs have already fed on the best candidates. Glad we picked up Fuente when we did.
The chances of them getting left in the cold holding their dicks is much greater than landing a quality head coach. They're very likely going to be dumpster diving, picking up the cold leftovers that nobody else wanted. With Georgia, Miami, USCe, USCw, Mizzou, Syracuse, and Maryland all open, its going to be tough for them to pick up anyone who could conceivably be considered a Tier 1 or Tier 2 coach this offseason. Good chance they'll be battling it out with Rutgers and possibly Indiana for the best of the Tier 3 guys. Yes, UVa has money. That's all they have. Their fan support is awful, their facilities are meh, their administrative support is bad, and they haven't beaten their in state rival in 12 years, and it doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. And even worse, their in state rival just hired one of the best young coaches in the game while keeping arguably the best defensive coach in the game.
Even in the bad ACC Coastal, this is a job set up for failure.
Loeffler to UVA? anyone?
That's what happened on NCAA football to me. Then Bud went to USCw.

This week in UVa schadenfreude
Funny you mention Mack Brown, I had heard a rumor a few weeks back that he was trying to work the back channels to getting the LOLUVA job
Me too. I've seen him associated with the UVA job before the UVA job was even open. It would be typical of UVA to hire him so that the administration could feign interest in fielding a competitive team.
That would be the most LhOoL thing ever. Hiring Mack Brown would solidify their stagnant status for the long haul.
Mark May advocated that UGA hire Brown. I had to rewind TiVo to make sure I heard it correct.
Saw this about Mack and loluva
They think there's a chance they go after Rhett Lashlee after Auburn's year? Seriously? I think he'll make a great HC someday, but the dude is barely 30 and has been a D-1 OC for a total of 4 years. No way he's leaving Malzhan right now.
The rest of the list is absurd. Chad Morris won't go to UVA. I could see Matt Rhule, but I think someone else picks him up (Mizzou maybe?). Tom Herman won't go to UVA when he would be a top candidate juuuuuust about anywhere.
The list just seemed to throw a bunch of BS at the wall. One interesting name is PJ Fleck though.
Or Jeff Brohm
I almost burst out laughing at work at the speed sweep comment
This caught my eye:
Guess they didn't watch the FSU-UF game. Or any UF game this year. Their offense is bad, as in 92nd in the country (scoring) and 104th (total) bad.
so..like worse than VT's offense bad? yikes!
Surprised they didn't mention Bob Diaco, UCONN's coach. He won 2 games there his first year, 6 this year. Was a very good DC at Notre Dame prior to taking the UCONN job. I think he was the secondary coach at UVA under Groh, if memory serves.
They could do worse than Diaco. He's solid, has roots, has worked at academically self-important programs.
I've said since early in the season that Al Golden will be in Charlottesville next year
that would be great!
Guitarman beat me to the financial deal part.
Could it be beneficial to VT to consider extending some kind of recruiting role to Time Cop? I know HC to recruiting assistant would be a pretty big demotion but the guy was a terrible HC.
Some G5 team or FCS will make him an assistant in a heartbeat. Just to recruit kids from the 757.
All you need is 757
He was a successful HC at UofR.
With another coach's players.
Just like his first two years at UVA.
UVA has a problem with excitement and interest. If they want to add sizzle to their program, they could go after Lane Kiffin.
Who they go after, and who they get are two different things.
Go from a cop to a punk. That makes sense.
Moving forward, do they have any good recruits?
This is truly a sad day. Any time your in state rival loses their head coach who is winless against you, it removes an advantage you have. Whether or not LOLUVA actually does something to try to negate the disadvantage they've been at ever since Welsh left...
We'll miss you, Time Cop. This is truly a loss for Virginia Tech football.
Time to fire up the campaign! #AlGroh4UVA...Again
So long as they keep Craig Littlepage and Jon Oliver running the show at the top, we don't have much to fear from loluva football. The school and fan base, as a whole, will also need a dramatic shift in culture. They do not strike anyone as a "football school." Their fans don't tailgate well, and even get upset when visitors decide to toss the pigskin around their lots.
I didn't even know Oliver was running the football program at UVa. But here he is with his Cavs hat.
A pretentious tool with a completely unwarranted attitude of superiority?
Wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Those characteristics certainly make for the worst kind of hoo, don't they?
Those characteristics certainly make for
the worst kind ofa hoo, don't they?FIFY
THIS!
Oliver knows football, it's just not called football in this country. Explains a lot, actually. UVa is a football (soccer) school, I'll give them that.
It seems to me like the past few years London has been setup for failure be it the schedule, staffing, or the Littlepage factor. I wonder if any quality coach will want to go into that kind of environment?
It seems to me like the past few years, London has been the coach of LOLUVA. Same difference. ;)
I've hurled more than my share of insults London's way. As is fitting for the coach of our rival.
Now that he is gone though, I must say that I never doubted that he is a good person. I wish him well in his future pursuits.
Agreed. I've had a lot of fun at his expense, but that's all it was. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, high character, and trustworthy. He'll land on his feet somewhere.
He'll land on his feet somewhere.
TimeCat
Well, he certainly always pussy-footed around issues regarding the game clock.
He was there for six seasons. Seems like to me he should have been there for three more.
Guess UVA let the cat out of the bag a little too early then, huh?
+1 potential for post of the year here.
Good thing we got Fuente early, otherwise he could have ended up a Hoo.
Amirite? /s
No.
So long as the new UVa coach is not Matt Rhule, Pep Hamilton, Dino Barbers nor Oregon OC Frost, I'm good with it. The real danger is Matt Rhule. If either UMd or UVa hire him, my fear is that it could really hurt our recruiting. The guy is already familiar with the Mid Atlantic Region and has a reputation as a good recruiter.
Well UCF hired Babers and it looks like Syracuse might hire Frost so we got those 2 down
First Groh, the London, who is the next coach for the Hokies end of regular season scrimmage?
Official report out of Charlottesville is that London gets to keep all of his timeouts with his resignation package.
I believe the LOLUVA brain trust is upping their search parameters to a chief of police

this go 'round.
I hear that the Albemarle police chief is retiring. Means he would be available for a new job.
Forced resignation after losing to the worst VT team in over a decade.
Is this year one of the worst for coaches to retire/get fired or does it just seem that way because our coach is leaving?
I think there is an extraordinary amount of upheaval this year
Shame, Thought he was doing a wonderful job.
From our perspective, he was great.
He was as good for a VT fan as Tony Romo has been for a Redskins fan
Analogy doesn't work. Romo is 11-9 against the Skins.
But the rest of the NFL is significantly better against the skins than that.
Only 13 of 31 active teams are better all-time against the Skins than that. Remember, they used to be a power before the Clinton administration.
(Sorry, I really am that guy when it comes to stats.)
All time, sure. But since Romo started? The Skins have been pretty consistently terrible in that time.
This is what I was getting at
That's fair then.
Remember how people were saying early on that there will be more openings than qualified candidates available and some schools were destined to drown in the process?
Looks like we know where that list starts
Rich Rod to UVA.
Well at least we'd have a defense that would be very adept at stopping him...
and he wouldn't have the right talent to run his offense for a number of years anyway
Got this picture from TSL. Let's have some fun, shall we?

"You can never resign from being my b*tch."
Slept at a Holiday Inn Express did you...fake punts, they'll get after ya!
"I retired because I had a good career. Emphasis on good"
Well, that was a fun run for both of us. I enjoyed my view a tad better than you did, amirite?
"Tough luck, man. You can't win 'em all. Actually, in your case, you can't win any of them."
"And that right there is the definition of getting after ya."
"See this here Gatorade bath? Happens after a win. But I got after ya too much for you to have any idea what I'm talking about."
Well, that escalated quickly. Went from "London never beat Beamer" to "London never beat VT."
Mike London gets to lord it over Golden and Edsall that he didn't get fired, he just resigned.
Mike London also leaves with a 4-2 record against Golden.
EDIT: 4-1. Golden was fired before Miami played LOLUVA this year.
losing record against Mike London? Yeah I'd fire him mid season, too
UVA thinks Richt will be their new coach....
I hope they get Randy Edsall. I hear he's available.
After all the negative recruiting they did on Frank for being old, this would interesting to watch.
But why would he want to start over like that? Talk about penthouse to outhouse
Great, he can underachieve there with even less talent.
Looks like UMD is making a push for Richt. Could be an issue on the recruiting trail.
That would be great. I mean UMd is a financial disaster already, which is why they bolted for the B1G to take the cash grab to not go under, so as soon as they get somewhat financially stable, hiring Richt would be one of the most irresponsible things they could imaginably do.
Which is why they're going to do it
All this coaching news, I need a timeout!!!!
So when was the last time that LOLUVA and Tech both had rookie football coaches?
1974 - Jimmy Sharpe at VT and Sonny Randle at UVA.
ugh Sonny Randle....I HATE that guy. Always goes out of his way to troll VT on sports talk radio (or he did, I havent lived in Richmond for over a year)
Edit: 1. I was wrong. 2. VTGuitarMan beat me to it (of course)
According to Winsipedia
I hate you
Back then VMI was more of a peer than UVa. Now? Roles have reversed
Nooooo.... VMI is still more of a peer than UVa.
I'm not really worried as long as we continue to beat them yearly and they continue to have <6 wins to never make a bowl, I'll be happy.
Although, I'd prefer them not to get Mark Richt or Tom Herman because I honestly couldn't see them getting anyone better than them two.
I'd much rather have UVA be at least fairly good, even if it meant us losing to them once a decade...
Will get downvoted for this, and that's cool. I hate UVA, but London always seemed like a good guy. Off the football field, and certainly never near or against VT, I hope good things come by him. He never had a lot of the bad stuff associated with him that come by some coaches, and I can respect it.
I have nothing personal against him and wish him well....but I'll miss having him to make fun of.
asked a friend from UVA who he thought was gonna be their next head coach and he actually believed les miles and dan mullen would come. I just stopped him there
LOL!...in typical Spaulding fashion:

"I'll have Les Miles, Dan Mullen, Chip Kelly..."
You'll get nothing and like it!
I hear Sarkisian is available.
Your signature applies perfectly here
Truly the happiest of accidents.
I also hear he's fond of Zima...could be a great match
I think he's a fan of PineSol if he gets desperate enough.
You know, I think that London could have been successful at another school. I think that it's the environment and support (or lack there of) that contributed to his lack of success. Plus I would love to watch him go somewhere else and be successful just to rub it into loluva's face!
Coming out of Richmond, I liked him. I was pissed when UVA got him.
But watching him the last six years....well, the Timecop bit wasn't really that much of a joke. I really started to doubt his skills as a coach. That said, I think he's a good person, and wouldn't mind seeing him succeed somewhere else. I just wouldn't hire him as a head coach.
It's the Holiday season. I'm sure this guy could use some help...

I hear he's applying for the UVa HC job. I hope it comes down to him and Al Golden.
still holding out hope that this is a typo and they meant to say "Mike London re-signs..."
Mike London was a fantastic crowd control officer at UVA. He managed to disperse any large gathering around the stadium quickly and prevented many from happening in the first place. He should get a promotion to full campus security officer now.
He was never able to stop a large contingent of VT fans from gathering every other year in Charlottesville to watch the annual Commonwealth Cup event. He was much better at controlling the UVa fans' participation.
No reason to listen to anyone wearing loluva gear.
This is not making me feel very good
First, we freak out during our coaching search at every candidate out there. Now we're doing the same for others. Did you not learn that multiple people get associated with each position when we had a new candidate each day? People, let the carousel work its way through the openings and go from there.
I like the anticipation. This is a very very slow time of the year for me at work. I'm bored
That's Richt's nice way of saying go eff yourself loluva and twerps
Probably just practicing his interview skills. It's been a while for him, you know.
I've had the 'privilege' of meeting Mike London and all rivalry aside, he's a really good guy. He gave me a Beamer vibe actually in how he seemed to care about what you said and was pretty down to earth. I wish him the best wherever he goes as long as it's not against us.
