Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

Well, this is happening now. Poster Tailgate QB first mentioned series in the forums two days ago, and it's official now via The Register-Herald.

"It's down the road a little bit, but it's the first time they could squeeze us into their schedule," said Luck, who played in the series four times, splitting those four meetings from 1978 through 1981. "But it becomes more important given the geography of the Big 12. Getting a school like Virginia Tech means a lot."

"It's two great universities that have had some great competition," agreed Beamer, who's 12-7 against the Mountaineers. "We've always had great respect for them, and I think they feel the same way about us. Where we're located, it's the right thing to do. We'll take fans to Morgantown, and they'll bring fans to Blacksburg."

It's time to polish up the Black Diamond Trophy and head to Morgantown on September 18, 2021.

I'm glad this series is happening again, in the future I'd like it to become a more regular thing. Losing is as much a part of an intense rivalry as winning. Yes, it's fun to beat the 'Hoos every year, but 9-straight wins has made the Commonwealth Cup more an anual coronation than contest. The Techmo Bowl had early promise, but Beamer Co. has handled Paul Johnson more often than not in recent years. The game against West Virginia is what's been missing from our schedule since we left the Big East. Even though the Hokies have gotten the better of the 'Eers in recent time, the series has been a tight 17-16 in favor of WVU from 1973 through 2005.

There have been thrilling wins...

...and bitter losses.

Note: If you watch that entire game, you love pain.

It's about time this series was renewed because the games were too damn fun, atmospheres too damn passionate to remain on the sidelines.

Comments

The excited part is in reference to winning the Black Diamond Trophy. The scared part is in reference to traveling to Morgantown.

As someone who wasn't a Hokie until I started at VT 3 years ago, I only know about this rivalry from you lovely folks. That said, I can't wait for it to start back up, just so I can experience it. Nothing beats a good hate-filled rivalry, especially when it's competitive, as Joe pointed out. I have no idea where our program will be in 8 years, but I know I'll be there in Morgantown to watch them kick ass

This may be THE most hate-filled rivalry in the entire country. Seriously, be very careful if you travel to Morganhole. You'll notice that all of our players on the bench will have their helmets on the entire game, for good reason.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

Amen to this - we need to get over this "they have the worst fans", etc. I went to the 2003 game when I was a senior and watched our #2 Hokies get wailed on and listened to a barrage of torment but I never felt "unsafe". I have to many games in Morgantown and 2003 was by far the worst as far as fan sportsmanship - but this still doesn't come close to the majority of SEC rivalries.

If you want to talk about shitty fan behavior and sportsmanship go to a Alabama/Auburn game.

Beat WVU

That's the problem with Mo-town. Depending on where you are you get a different experience. Most of the WVU students aren't bad, its the non-students that are horrible. Last time we played in Mo-town my buddy got jumped in the bathroom while taking a piss, he turned around and got cold cocked. My wife's entire family outside of her (she's a Hokie) went to WVU so I'm excited to see the games again.

If you are going, travel in packs, its the only way to defend yourself against drunk, toothless, hillbillies!

I will be 32 years old when we travel to Morgantown.

Holy shit.

So you'll be me basically. Nice.

After 30, there's three things that start to go... Eyesight, hearing ... And I forget the third one

I wish it were happening in the more near future because I'd like to see Bud's defense matched against Holgo's O. Neither coach may be on their respective staff when this series rolls around.

DoubleA batteries don't feel good. Screw Morganhole, just be in Blacksburg.

...you know...

This is a couple years old, but it's one of the funniest things I've read in regards to WVU:

"I just can't see it putting a stop to people's desire to burn," Kookan said. "It might hide things to burn, but I feel that if I see someone burning something, I want to be a part of that."

I was in Morgantown this year, stopped in on my motorcycle trip. I was definitely worried about riding around as I have hokie patches on my vest. Got out of there though.

I'm still surprised no one has brought up wvu fans pooping in opposing teams bands seats. There was a video of it.

I feel like by the time we play, it will be different.

I am glad this series is happening again. If we as a fan base have problems with a series with WVU because of how their fans act in Morgantown then simple solution: Dont go to the game in Morgantown. It's only one away game.

@VTimHokie85

I live in WV, and as an avid Hokie fan, you can only imagine the verbal abuse I have received my entire life. When the news first broke that this rivalry was being renewed, a WVU fan from my area said that Tech will most likely get scared again, and end the rivalry in 2022. I proceeded to tell him that Tech is not scared of a team that they beat the last two times they played, not to mention Tech slaughtered WVU the last time up in Morgantown. Not much of a reply after that.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

I was lucky enough to be a Junior in 1999, and witness the miracle in Morgantown personally. It was me and 3 friends that made the trip. We were bombarded relentlessly for around 3 hours with anything and everything thrown at us ranging from cans, to chicken bones, to what appeared to be some sort of small recently deceased mammal. Though in hind sight the latter may have been something they eat there. There are no lower class fans than WVU's. With all that said though, the rivalry was amazing. I still wear my VT gear any and every time i visit anywhere north of Charleston.

I wear my VT gear to school everyday as well. And it probably was an animal that was supposed to be eaten. One of the towns have an annual road kill cook off festival.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

I proudly wore my VT gear to the WV state fair last year. And I will do it again this year. I ain't skeered of those Eers!
